I had an appointment with Katelyn last night. I've had my fair share of misses. This was my best experience with a stylist that I can recall!!! I'm happy to say Katelyn really gave me great service. She is very relaxing, very present. She communicates and listens really really well. I'm wearing a beautiful mane of silky tresses that had winter snarls eating my ends. And I've grown out my hair for 4 years. Lots of gray, silver, and some gold and ashy blonde woven into my hair now. It's mostly my hair. It's been looking dull and the tangles were ruining my ease of daily hair life. She cut off the exact amount needed before shampoo and I was relaxed at the sink. Water temp was perfect, neck didn't hurt. My hair is so soft and my color, without any treatment, already looks way better to me!! My final rave of appreciation for Katelyn's skills is that she followed me on everything I discussed. She explained the logic behind the simple cut now (growing bangs out) and going for the layers I'm looking for later. A+++! And she understood the touch of color, or more complex color ideas and we were in sync on what's next. The Consultation was really the best I can recall. Simply the best hair salon and Stylist I have been to since I arrived in Virginia two years ago. I had tried a new salon the day before I found ONYX and got my hair cut by a sweet but inexperienced hair stylist. She hacked my hair up and and darkened it a lot. I was very upset and emailed Kate the Master Stylist at Onyx and she saw me right away. I could not believe that Kate fixed my hair and in less than 15 minutes! She dry cut it and blended the chopped up mess that I came in with and I left with beautiful hair!! I highly recommend Kate and Onyx to anyone that wants and expects a fantastic hair style. They gave me to the new girl barely out of school. She missed an appointment that she herself booked. Then next time I went in I gave her a picture of what I wanted which she didn't know how to cut. She asked for help and the senior hairdresser told her how to do it. But never came back to check. She cut the back uneven and the left holes in my back of my head which was a short pixie cut. I have had to grow my hair out for 3 months to be able to recut my hair the way I want. I understand that everyone needs to learn by hands on but the senior hair dresser should have check back and never allowed me to leave looking bad. The Jr hairdresser never let me check the back and I was in a hurry plus you never want to upset them and have it made worse by the senior hairdresser. Please support your Jr hairdresser better so people don't end up with bald spots. read more

I went to Onyx for 10 years for hair coloring with good results. I loved Meridith, Ariel and Tracy....but they all left Onyx. Hena did my color sevaral times, but the last 2 times, she missed sections of gray completely. So, I booked my next appointment with Kaitlyn. Hena was in the shop that day and no doubt wondered why I did not book with her. Hena and Kaitlyn were behind the counter mixing my color. I showed Kaitlyn the section Hena had missed and she just said she would take care of it....like it was no issue. The color Kaitlyn used was at least 2 shades darker than my hair. I should have come back for correction, but at this point, I feared they would just mess it up more. i found Tracey's new location and have gone to her ever since. It took 3 sessions to get the dark color out, at my expense. I e-mailed Kate about this, but never got a response or any question about why I cancelled my future appointments and never came back..Not much concern for a 10 year customer. Cathy Bostic read more

This was my first time coming to this salon and it won't be my last! Even with the COVID precautions you felt very welcomed and my hair stylist name was Kate and she was awesome! Did not care for this place at all. Very trendy, if you aren't a *cool kid* I would not suggest going here. I asked for someone who knew about curly hair and was sent with someone who was supposed to be very good. She may have been very good if she had been paying attention to me at all. I told her that I didn't want bangs, what did she do? She turned my chair around and before I knew what happened she had cut super short bangs. When I go to a salon I feel like I should be the only one the stylist is paying attention to. I did not care for the fact that this stylist chatted with other employees and even left me sitting several times to go work on someone elses hair. Another thing, I don't understand how they can dab some product in you hair, pin the super short bangs (that I didn't want) down with a bobby pin and stick you under the dryer and then charge you for a style. read more

Just an update. I am on day 5 of ruined hair and it has now begun to turn green on the top and is white and blonde on the bottom. Earlier today the Salon's Facebook page decided to post a picture from the stylist's phone of before and after pictures of my hair which read "Jenni gave her client some great new hair" with a heart emoji following. This is all after the salon and the stylist was made fully aware of how upset I was and how much they had damaged my hair. I had also posted a bad review on their Facebook the day prior, so it really seemed like the picture was put there to mock my terrible experience. I am new to the area and was referred to Kate at Onyx by a friend of mine. I couldnt be happier that she did. i have been in for a cut and then for color, and i am over the moon excited about them both. I came in with a color concept in mind and Kate more than delivered. She is fantastic! I love my hair once again, and will continue to return as long as i am in this area. The salon is clean and very modern, the staff is professional and courteous, and the services offered are excellent. I asked for peacock highlights and told the stylist how much I could spend. Asked her if it was possible for that price. She agreed. The highlights came out blue and magenta, and she increased the price by $40!!!! I paid it because I was afraid the manager would make her pay it instead, but don't go here! read more

I never understood people who had a designated "hair person." That is, until I met Kate (owner/master stylist). I've been loyal to her for years and that is because she knows ME and knows what I want and what suits me without me having to really explain anything. I had heard fantastic things about this salon from some people I know from work. Being new to the area and not sure where to go to get my hair done I decided to give this place a shot. I was worried it would be expensive, and I didn't know which stylist to go with, but the receptionist was extremely helpful. She suggested Emily whom I was told, was a junior stylist and was very good with long hair like mine. It was only gonna be 20 bucks, which sounded awesome to me. Emily was super friendly, knowledgeable and took her time listening to me to give me exactly what I wanted. She even taught me a couple tricks to styling my hair and curled it for me (which I can never do myself) She also suggested some styling products that I ended up buying and totally loving. They always have good deals on products and even sometimes offer discounts for booking with a stylist that has had a cancellation (check their fb page)! I couldn't have been more pleased. Everyone else that I've encountered has also been really friendly as well. I also go tanning there on a regular basis and although they only have 1 bed, it is top notch with reasonable pricing. I was not impressed by this salon at all! I do not remember the stylist name, but she had only been there for 3 weeks. She used way too much product in my hair. She tried to push products on me. I went in to only have the top of my hair texturized, I am not sure what exactly she did, but nothing about my style changed. Further, I was charged $30 for just a texturizing on the top only! Not even a full cut. She tried to curl, then used a straightner on my hair. It looked like straw. I finally just asked her to give me some wax and I fixed it myself. I will NEVER go back to that place. Maybe some of the stylist are good, but I was not impressed and I am sorry I don't remember her name. I think Onyx is trying to just fill their stations with just anybody. If you want a bad hair experience and pay high prices, then this is the place for you. I have not lived in the area long and saw this salon's website. It looked amazing. I saw a haircut by Kate that I wanted and it resembled a haircut I had in the past. I called and Kate was on maternity leave so they made me see someone else. I asked her if she could do the cut and she said yes. I told her it was very important to me for it to be like the picture I had of my hair from the past because I had upcoming graduation and wedding. I also asked her for highlights that were copper and peeked out from my layers. She barely looked at the picture I showed her. Then, she bleached my hair and then applied toner to it (a $20 extra charge that I did not know about). My hair came out orange!!! Not only that, but the highlights did not even go up to the root! When I told her my hair was a little too orangey she was very hateful with me and acted as if it would be a hassle to fix it so I said well maybe it will look better dry. She then started cutting my hair. She cut it waaaaay shorter than the picture. When it was dried, it almost looked like I had a bowl cut with orange stripes. I was charged so much for that horrible cut and color that I just wanted to cry. She was still hateful, but I did not like my hair. When I got into the car I cried and cried. I knew my hair would not look good for the wedding :(. I called to complain about the color, made an appt. then drove all the way back only for her to dye my hair back to my natural color. She said to put highlights in it would be an additional $50 even though she is the one who messed up and did chunky orange highlights when I wanted thinner copper ones. I have never had such poor customer service. It is now the week of my wedding (3 weeks after the cut) and my hair still looks horrible. I cannot do anything with it because it is so short and has weird layers. At least with the cut I was supposed to have I could put it in a ponytail. And don't get me started on my bangs...........! I was planning to go back to have Kate do my hair in the future, but after spending that much for horrible customer services I will never go back. read more
