Ever find yourself in Williamsburg Brooklyn on a beautiful Saturday afternoon after a hard friday night of leftist activities, wandering pointlessly through the neighborhood and then your eye is caught by a glimpse of something familiar, on closer inspection its a book you know and love, then you realize its gently nestled amongst other kindred objects of book-loving-object-lusting-design? This guy brings the books every weekend, and he brings them hard... none of the usual remainders you find at other book stands, these are serious straight up books like red cross swimming guides, and pre-war French design annuals, vintage porn magazines, and 2nd edition Walt Whitman. I never leave empty handed. Last time I was there I bought a really great Harry Callahan photography book. He has some pretty obscure stuff. Apparently he is working on a web site which will allow you to sign-up for emails so we can browse online, but for now you gotta schlep out to Williamsburg and check it out the old fashioned way... offline. BTW: The outdoor market is by Yolas - the BEST crunchy beef tacos in brooklyn, right off the L-Trian, Metropolitan stop. read more

Terrible stock, limited to a hodgepodge of furniture. Reminds me of goodwill which has better service than here. Go elsewhere for a greater chance of finding something decent for your home. read more

The owner is an ignorant, arrogant dude who doesn't respect customers. His furniture is either in incredibly poor condition or outrageously overpriced. And don't get me wrong - I came to the store because I enjoy modern / scandi design and understand there are premiums attached to certain blue chip designers. The owner doesn't seem to appreciate anybody else understanding this and feels the need to obnoxiously request you throw away your coffee while his snotty 2 year old trips and kicks everything in sight. I guess the guys at Open Air Modern don't like one star reviews because they somehow had my old review removed with success. I bought a really beautiful wall unit that I'm very happy with but I think I bought it at a premium. Yes... my own fault. When I picked it up I was told I could back my Jeep up in to their narrow entrance which I did. As my friend and I were loading it the owner came out and started giving me a hard time and told me that I needed to move my car NOW! I guess he felt that he could treat me like shit once my credit card went through. I would be wary of this place. Oh - and my really beautiful wall unit has reappeared in that store like 5 times since I bought it. The same one over and over again. Interesting. I would shop around if I were you. read more

The entrance to this shop is a bit hidden, but once you get inside it's like entering a wonderful mid-century treasure trove of mid-century books and modernist furniture. Even if you aren't in the market to redecorate your apartment this place is a must visit for anyone into design as their used book collection is wonderful. I came across some amazing oversized books on every topic from the bauhaus to Japanese 80s poster design. The owner clearly has some wonderful taste and this spot is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood. read more

I visited the store looking for a certain dresser to fit my space and match my existing Danish modern desk. While they didn't have anything on display that fit the bill, they took down my information and a week later they emailed me photos of a new option that had just arrived and fit my specs. It was perfect for me and I bought it the next day. I really appreciated that they noted what I was looking for and then actually followed up on it! Open Air Modern is one of the gems of Williamsburg. The owner's selection of furniture and books reveals his artistic values, knowledge of craft and appreciation for utility. You can tell he puts heart and soul into his work. The showroom is always packed with great pieces across a range of styles. The pieces tend to move quickly, which says a lot. I found an incredible 1970s metal floor lamp and the owner noticed a loose connection I hadn't seen and kindly offered to fix it before I took it home. He wanted me to be happy with what I bought, so I took him up on his offer and the lamp has worked flawlessly. Based on that experience I went back to the shop and, sure enough, scored another great find. Can't say enough good things about this small business and highly recommend checking it out. read more

Sandwiched next to Gimme Coffee and Forcella Pizza is this tiny little furniture store. They carry all sorts of retro pieces, all in good condition. You can find end tables, and couches, bookshelves, and even some interesting books too. I wasn't wowed beyond belief, but it's a nice store, and worth a stop for sure. read more

This place is a great find on the weekends....vintage furniture AND a bangin' selection of books. Art and arch. Design, vintage porn! What more do you want from your weekend? BUYER BEWARE. Long story short....the owner sold me (what he claimed to be) a vintage mid-century outdoor table for $75. Later I discovered the same table at IKEA for $38. When I confronted him about the misrepresentation, he was slipperier than a Mississippi eel...however, after schooling him on ethics and suggesting he "man up", he finally agreed to take the table back and refund my $75. We were in the market for an excellent-quality midcentury modern dresser, and we found Open Air Modern online. They had so many cool pieces on their website--the owner, Matt Singer, has great taste! And there's no clutter--every piece is well chosen. They've got detailed photos and descriptions on the site, so we actually got most of our browsing done at home. We fell in love with a gorgeous Børge Mogensen dresser. When we went in to check it out, it looked even better in person than it did online. Matt was there to answer all our questions. He set up delivery quickly--we had the piece in our bedroom two days later. An easy, great furniture-buying experience--though beware, the stock is so nice that you may find it difficult to leave empty-handed, or only with what you meant to come in to buy. A very well curated store. Matt the owner is very friendly and helpful. He is super passionate about design and it shows. He has an amazing eye. Every piece is beautiful and in great condition! They also have an impressive collection of books, some quite rare. Some of the prices seem high, but I think for the quality of the goods they are fair compared to other shops selling similar items. read more

Beautiful and affordable collection of mid century and Scandinavian modern furniture. So lucky to have this shop nearby: Open Air Modern's collection of vintage Eames shell chairs and Hans Wegner furniture are unmatched in NYC! Shopping (and window shopping) here is a truly great experience. I always come away feeling smarter and better educated than when I walked in-lots of great design books and the owner is knowledgeable on all his products and willing to teach and share his knowledge. Based on the other reviews, it sounds like Open Air Modern is a lovely place to visit and buy. However, if you are someone who is selling mid-century items, I advise you very strongly against working with this business and its proprietor. Several months before we'd sold our parents' house, he offered $2500 for several items and for clearing and broom sweeping the house. As the closing date drew nearer, he repeatedly lowered the offer until it was down to just sweeping and clearing at no charge to us. His behavior made a difficult time, the selling of a parent's house, considerably more stressful by exploiting the timing and our situation (e.g., living out of town). Seller beware! read more
