Our project was a small-ish deck replacement. The old one was well passed its prime as several of the wooden posts and the stairs were rotten and/or splitting. I added a picture for reference. We didn't have any special requests for the new deck so it was a standard deck replacement project. Estimates: Dmitriy came out soon after we contacted Open Space Design. He had good suggestions on how to tweak the layout of the new deck to move the stairs to a better place. The estimate provided was right around what we expected to pay. We got other estimates but the other decking companies we tried didn't really listen to our requests for simplicity, and as such, their estimates were much higher. Build: It was about a month or so from estimate to build which was quick. Jose and his crew were great. From soup to nuts, I think they completed the project in about a week. The weather was typical for Seattle this time of year, sunny one minute and pouring the next, but they kept on going all day long regardless. I couldn't be happier with the look and quality of the new deck. You can tell when people are experts in their craft. If I ever need a new deck, I will be calling Dmitriy again. read more

I'm really glad that we hired Dmitriy and his crew to replace our deck. His bid was close to the lowest yet the quality of the work is excellent. Also, Dmitriy is very knowledgeable and very honest. A couple of examples... When they tore down our old deck they discovered some water damage inside one of the walls of the house. We expected this, as patio doors that had been changed some years prior had not been correctly installed. Dmitriy had the needed skills to completely repair the wall in situ, and he also removed and reinstalled the two patio doors correctly using drip pans to prevent the problem from reoccurring. In truth he could have charged us anything he wanted in this situation, and he charged us a very fair amount for what ended up being a lot of work. Dmitriy and his crew are also very careful not to waste materials. Their process is to purchase what is needed and provide the customer with receipts for reimbursement, but if there are returnable materials at the end of the job, they'll get a refund on those and credit you back. It's not a big deal bu I appreciate it. Anyway, back to the deck. We had it built last fall, and now that we're finally getting to use it we're realizing just how solid and well-built it is, and it just looks fantastic. I know decks are their bread and butter and they do a great job, but we are happy enough with the quality of their work that we've actually had Dmitriy's people back for a few other projects including changing a couple of windows and installing a new front door. I like supporting a veteran-owned small business, and it's really easy to do that when they provide excellent products and services at a really honest price. Dmitriy and his crew did a fantastic job on our house. There were two parts to the project: 1. Add railing on our larger deck, 2. Fully rebuild the small "landing" deck in the back. Dmitriy was prompt and professional when visiting to give an estimate. His quote was competitive, and his crew got the job done VERY FAST. Dimitriy was the ideal partner for my deck build. His bid was straightforward and prompt. Upon acceptance, he worked with me through the design process, identifying materials and quantities and validating approach. The build phase was very close to what he forecast. Building a deck from scratch is not easy: building molds and prototyping, setting large, heavy footings and beams, cement pours, and significant material cutting, screwing, nailing, glueing, sealing, etc. Dimitriy was an animal during build, working long hours through crazy weather to deliver on a vision we worked through collaboratively. I was getting tired of the annual maintenance of replacing and finishing some of our 17-year-old deck's cedar decking. So I requested 4 bids and got 3. Dimitry spent far more time during his inspection of the deck explaining our options for decking material and fastening systems. He was also the only one to probe our pressure-treated structural members for soft spots caused by rot. He showed me that about 6 of our joists would have to be replaced and almost all of the posts for our railing. Also one support post had a significant split, requiring replacement of that post. None of the inspections for the other bids raised these structural problems. Dimitry's bid was higher as a result, but it was still close to other cost estimates. When I accepted Dimitry's plan and bid, work began within a week. Dimitry and his crew were amazingly accommodating about an earlier finish date we needed. They had to work some long hours, but they got everything done in two calendar days! read more

We hired Jeff to build a deck for us, behind our new house in North Ballard. Jeff had been recommended by our landscaper (EcoTech), and our deck project turned out perfect, on time, at a reasonable price--and that is truly a rare and wonderful thing. Feel free to get other bids, like we did, because you may have to wait a while to have the work done by Jeff. But we think if you do decide to wait for Jeff, you won't be disappointed. When they came out to replace it, they also inspected the others and asked if we would want them replaced because they were rotting too. What I appreciate is that they provided photos and explanations so I could make an educated decision. They also fixed an issue with my gutters while they were working on the gable fascia. I cannot recommend them enough, Very fair pricing and transparent on cost etc. I will choose to work with them again on my other projects such as remodeling a bathroom and kitchen. read more

We're DIYers (the honest-to-goodness seriously-actually-doing-repairs and renovations-ourselves) and were looking for some help in a deck design. We have an old WWII 'box' house in North Ballard / Crown Hill, and the 1.5 story height of it wasn't friendly to outdoor decks. We wanted someone to help us construct a layout and new design for a compete deck rehaul, and found Jeff's consulting services. He was great to work with! Did an in-person initial consult, gave us several options of layouts and material suggestions, was completely honest and forthright, and very accessible over email. Even got to use his contractor discount in placing our material order. Jeff & his team recently replaced our crusty old front & back decks in Ballard with a new Azek deck with a stained cedar railing. We found Open Space Design on Yelp. From the initial interview to the final inspection, everything about working with Jeff was positive. Our deck is large and elevated, so the structural design was very important. We wanted everything to be legal and to code. Jeff planned and delivered exactly what we asked for, on time and within budget. In addition to being an accomplished craftsman, he is incredibly well organized. He ordered the materials, drew the plans, got a permit approved with the city, and managed the two required city inspections, all without a hitch. He showed up on time every day without fail, and worked amazingly hard. He gracefully managed extra work that came up, such as an unexpected rotted area on the wall under our old deck, for a reasonable fee. It was a delight to come home from work each day and see the amount of progress he had made. He also located a hauler to take away the old deck, and left the site clean and neat. From start to finish, the entire job took 2 weeks. We are very happy with our beautiful new deck, which is of much higher quality than our old deck! read more
