I stopped in here on a whim yesterday because I needed to get my head shaved and my beard cleaned up. I was not greeted very warmly, which I didn't really appreciate. I was wearing a kind of fabulous faux fur coat for the punk rock flea market, and I feel like the dudes that were working judged me as soon as I walked in. I was seated and without greeting me or welcoming me the guy who did my hair just said "what number?" As if I know anything about barber's shears or what numbers mean. Once I told him what I wanted he got to work, but I feel like he really rushed to the job. All in all I was in his seat for what felt like maybe five minutes. I had to ask him to go back and actually trim my neck and sharpen the edges of my beard, which he did do. All in all he did just an OK job. I didn't walk away thinking he didn't do well, but he certainly didn't take the time to make me feel welcome or make me feel like he was putting any real effort into what he was doing. My experience was exactly the same as Eric C's below. I came here on a weekday, I think Friday during lunchtime, after passing Barberie on the next block and seeing it packed. Opera Barbershop was empty, so I figured "a haircut is a haircut, at least you don't have to wait." Plus, the $24 cut seems to be the cheapest in the area. I now hear my dad's old advice ringing back at me: "good haircuts are not cheap, cheap haircuts are not good" and man was he right. Syofian rushed me through the shop so quickly and sloppily I couldn't believe it. He cut my sideburns slanted (without asking me if I wanted them taken up), missed multiple spots on my neck, and took soooo much more off than I had asked. This was not an enjoyable haircut experience and I doubt I'll ever be back. The ONE plus going for them is that they take venmo, BUT this comes at the draw that they don't accept any credit cards. I've been going to this barber shop for over 15 years. Yanni is fast, efficient, and knows exactly what I like. He's not one of those barbers who asks how you want it cut, and then cuts it as he likes. He listens to what you say and delivers. I moved out to DELCO in 2013 and have tried numerous barbers, but haven't had much luck. I make a special trip into Center City to get the perfect haircut from Yanni! I recommend this place to anyone who wants an affordable ($22 for a female) and simple cut! Yanni has cut my hair a few times, and I plan to keep going back. Plus, sometimes he brings his [calm and well-behaved] dog, so there's another incentive. This shop has a really casual vibe that took me a couple of visits to figure out (I haven't ever made an appointment). When you walk in, if nobody is available to cut your hair, you sit on one of the chairs against the wall until it's your turn. The staff is friendly but not overly chatty. The first time I went, I didn't realize it is cash only, and Yanni was really nice about the mistake and trusted me to run to the ATM. Yanni generally gives me what I ask for, though last time I had a couple of small strands of hair on the top layer in the middle of my head that were much shorter than any other layers. I did ask for layers, but I'm not sure what he was going for with those strands. I'm not really picky about my haircuts because most mistakes are hidden among my curls, so the pickier you are, the more specific you should be when describing what you want. read more

Just because a haircut takes 2 to 5 minutes (in that is the case for you) does not mean it's bad! How does a 45 minute hair cut make any difference for most men? This is my go to barber shop in Center City, and has been for 2 years. All of the barbers are great, really kind, and always do their best to get my hair looking exactly how I want it to look. The prices are very reasonable ($18 for a men's cut) and the service is fast and high quality. I love when the dogs are in the store; it makes for a fun time. Even when there are a lot of people waiting, the cut times are fast, and I've never found myself waiting more than 20 minutes. I just got back from this place to get a basic wash & trim (I have long hair, down to my chest). I walked in to see 3 chairs, all occupied with people getting cuts. No one said anything to me so I just sat down, feeling a bit awkward. But then one of the clients was done and the stylist just said "next!" and the next person that was waiting before me went to him. It was obvious that there was less structure but people knew who was next, etc. Once it was my turn, Marie asked me what I wanted done exactly and took the time to listen to me. Not the best haircut, and certainly not a friendly place. Not sure the barber gave two craps if I was there or not. He took barely 5 minutes for the entire thing, and didn't even use scissors. The fastest and best haircut I've gotten in a while- I know the two sound like contradictions in terms but Mr Opera (apologize for not knowing his real name) proves that it is possible . He is technically very adept and also possesses enough artistic skill to put that extra oomph into a haircut e. g texturizing. The clipper work is done almost in a matter of seconds and comes out perfectly blended with attention to all the details e.g corners and then he works his magic with the scissors. I've been to countless other barbershops and salons where they hem and haw endlessly and take almost an hour with the fade , in which time this gent would be done with three haircuts! My go to place for my monthly haircut. Always quick, and I'm never disappointed by the results. Update from a 5 to a 3: While this has been my usual place, with little complaints until now, the last two cuts haven't been great. The last one resulted in uneven bangs and this time ended up way too short; one of those situations where the first big cut happened too fast you have to go along with the rest.
