We found one and thought we were good to go. We followed up two days after confirming we wanted the property because we did not receive the lease like we were supposed to. The woman we were dealing with, Nancy, informed us that the property we were going to rent was booked by the owner and he never informed them. While this was disappointing news to hear and is NOT the fault of the Island Realty, what the issue with this scenario is, if we did not follow up, we would not have known until several more days had passed. Nancy claims she sent an email notifying us but we never received it. I would think bad news such as the rental not being available would warrant a phone call and not an "email". We were reluctant to follow up since we both work in real estate and know everyone is extremely busy right now with rentals and sales. My partner followed up simply because he had some free time and was concerned he missed something in his email. When we asked if there were other pet-friendly options available for our dates we got a cold, sterile response of "I have nothing that accommodates the number of people and a pet". Never once was the word "Sorry" or a modicum of sympathy shown. Again the rental falling through was NOT Island Realty's fault. The lack of customer service and empathy is 100% their's to own. If we got a phone call (customer service) that would have allowed us another day to look for an alternative. If some human emotion (empathy) were extended, that would have left a positive taste in our mouth. We actually want to buy a place next year since renting is too stressful. Two opportunities lost...

Shortly after arriving, we realized the place was probably not the best for kids. It was clearly decorated by someone who watched too much HGTV (as evident by the 80" magazines left in the parlor) and filled with personal pictures and knick knacks throughout the house (think of staying at your grandmothers). After leaving (and cleaning thoroughly), the owners sent a letter making a number of over inflated and erroneous claims against us. (*side note- 30 years of going to Cape May, never a single complaint against us). All Jersey Cape Realty did was simply forward the owners information to us. They stepped out of the situation and never offered to provide any assistance in resolving the problems- not even a solid comment in the email-- just a simple "copy and paste"!. I work in real estate in Maryland. It is common in cases like this for me to personally go to the property, perform my own inspections, and try to help mediate. However, working in real estate I know when a brokerage firm is nothing more than a nameplate- they run at the first sign of trouble and leave the "worker bees" alone to fight it out. I was terribly disappointing in the lack of service. With groups like this- it is apparent why technology it taking over this industry and boutique firms are going by the wayside. The service we hoped for never appeared and our memories are now tainted.

    Vacation from hell! On our third day our ceiling was leaking dirty water from the toilet above us…read more Urine and feces water was dripping on our toilet and floor. Nothing was done for 19 hours. They told us what did I expect, I called at the end of the day. I called at 4:30 PM. That is when it started. Apparently they did not feel it was an emergency and there was no need to call a plumber and pay the extra money. To stop the leak they removed part of the ceiling near the vent and stuffed paper towels in it. Then they repaired the toilet above us. They kept the ceiling open for 27 hours. The bathroom smelled like urine and feces. Eventually they put a patch over it. Leaving rotted, moldy, urine drenched wood in the ceiling. It was disgusting. When I spoke to Chris Henderson I requested a partial refund. She did not feel there was any reason for a refund. She told me the bathroom was still usable. When I asked her if she would have showered in that she said yes. As long as the urine was not dripping on her head. I asked her about stepping onto the floor that had urine on it and she told me she would have just laid a towel down. I highly doubt she would have done that. I asked for her to get me in touch with the owner so I could talk to them about the condition of their unit. She said she would get back to me. She has not answered my emails or returned my phone calls.
