They were very patient with us and super helpful when it came to picking out the glasses that were best for our daughter. They are kind, friendly and patient. Let me start by saying that this place was a 5 star rating. I have bought several pairs of expensive glasses in the past as well as recommended them to friends . They are one of the few places around here that carry a particular brand that I am a big fan of. So as far as selection of unique frames they are still get a 5 star rating!! Now for the issue I have with them. One being the hours of operation- terrible!!! They are practically never open. I got there a few minutes after they closed, literally less than 10 minutes. I just wanted my glasses tightened. They saw me standing there at the door and was totally ignored. Now for my main reason I will never spend another penny in this store. I called to request my pupillary distance (PD) so that I could by a cheap pair of halloween frames online. I need my current prescription lens in those glasses so I can see at work so clear-no prescription lens were not an option. I was told that they do not give out the PD. The woman was real quick to ask if I was buying glasses online. She gave me some stupid excuse that it was because the owner could loose his license if the glasses were made incorrectly.... ok, I knew that was BS!! Funny how the place that gave me the eye exam told me to contact the place I last bought glasses from to get the PD. This place doesn't want people to buy anywhere but there obviously!! Just because I am buying a cheap pair online this one time would not have caused me to stop going to a place I really liked. This arrogance and greed WILL stop me from buying glasses here in the future!! read more

I like the staff a lot, and the owner is often in the store and attentive to customers. They will even give quarters for your meter while you shop, and they have toys and treats for the kids. They remember our names when we come in, and they have a great selection of frames for children. Between me, my husband, my son and my mom, my family has purchased 5 pairs of great glasses from them. I also just got replacement lenses when my son's prescription changed. I decided this year to go someplace that will accept my insurance. It's a simpler process than having to go request a reimbursement. I have really good vision insurance, and I wasn't getting the full value from it because I was only able to get the "out of network" refund. read more

What a delightful experience. The frame of my rimless glasses broke and I needed an emergency repair before leaving the country. Diane turned it around in two hours. I came in for a minor repair of my daughter's glasses and was told it would take only a few minutes and $50. When I returned to pick them up the lady delivered me "bad news". She broke one of the lenses. Since the glasses were not under warranty - she suggested I pay over $200 to replace the lens. She wasn't even sorry - "these things happen". Really?! She broke the lens and I have to pay for it? I am extremely disappointed. Beware - the worst customer service ever. read more

When I found out that my 20 month old needed glasses, I was crushed. Finding frames for a toddler seemed impossible! Metuchen is not close, but it was worth it! The staff at Optique Unique spent almost two hours with my little girl and I, distracting her with toys and games so that she would try on all of the frames. She has a very strong prescription, but you would never know given how thin and clear they made her lenses. By day two, our daughter wouldn't take her glasses off. Wow. My frames broke and I needed a fix right away as my back up pair were nearly useless and causing me great psin. I went in to see if they could fix them but the break was in a very weak area. Much to my delight they found some frames that were close to my lenses and did some grinding to get them in and perfecto. I can see again and I love the new Nike frames. Barry and his crew got me in and out in about an hour's time. I'm amazed. read more

I've stopped by many times and have gotten my frames from Barry. Trust me, Barry and Laura know what they're doing. Love, love LOVE coming here every time I'm looking to get my glasses done. Where else would you get great personalities, warm hearts, skillful hands with a touch of fashionability? Don't tell me Lenscrafters and Pearle Vision! HA! There is an art in eyewear and franchisees need to learn that. Wearing fashion brand frames is NOT the same as high end designer ones. The former consists of mostly tasteless generic designs without any attention to detail (seriously, go to any Lenscrafter and tell me if I am wrong [just learned from 60 Minute's segment on Luxxotica that they own every fashion brand]). Thankfully Barry knows this and what he offers are many different high quality handmade brands like KIO YAMATO, and other things in that tier. I'm actually wearing a pair of KIO YAMATO myself from Optique Unique and LOVE them (look at my picture--i look fancyyyy!). They also have a nice section dedicated to children's for your kids if you're interested. Wonderful shop, great personable staff, and great glasses at great prices, what not to like?! read more

This is the coolest optical shop I've ever stepped into. It has both an antique and industrial feel. The selection is amazing. I went in because I found that my sunglasses were broken the day before I was set to leave for my Puerto Rico beach vacation. They were BROKEN...like, a piece had broken off--not an easy fix. They fixed them. Friggin' boss. I can't say enough about how kind the staff is, and how helpful. And if you have children...I have never seen a better selection of children's eyewear. They cater to them. Seriously...get yourself on into Optique Unique. You will walk out looking better than when you walked in. read more

Yes they do have a good selection of frames but they are extremely pushy and use sales tactics that left us stunned that our bill was as high as it was. I felt robbed, not valued. My glasses took over a week to get made and when I called to check on them after that week they said they hadn't even started them and would "jump me to the front of the line". WTH. They also messed up my glasses and sent me home with a defective lens. Luckily they fixed it without too much of a fuss. Their attitude was so "off" that I was scared I would have to argue with them over it. The overall attitude in here is way too intense and pushy for me to come back coupled with obfuscating the price until I already agreed so that I couldn't back out without looking stupid. They couldn't even get my name correct or remember me so they clearly aren't thinking of working with people long term. A $400 pair of glasses you can get from other shops in the area will cost you at least $700 here. I guess that's because of their "quality" but hey my lens was defective so... If you don't agree to adding all of the upcharge options to the glasses they'll act like you are making a terrible mistake. The also must train their staff to surround you and coo over you when you get your glasses because all of a sudden like 3 people will rush you when you get your glasses. Typical tactic makeup counters and other sales oriented places use to make you agree and leave quickly without complaining. read more

Humm, what can I say about this unique optical store?  A lot!  My experiences so far dealing with the staff have been excellent.  Barry Montalto the owner definitely knows his optics.  Laura, Debbie and Ben work the front of this well organized and stocked store and couldn't be any nicer and more importantly knowledgeable!  Put it this way, Debbie has been in the industry since 1979. I hope I have that much enthusiasm after working over 38 years in the same industry dealing with the public. Laura is a sweetheart and comes from the Lasik industry.  ALL three have worked with Barry for many years which again says a lot. Optique Unique has a great feel / warmth to its environment and you are never pressured to buy anything only educated on what lens/frames will work optimally with your vision prescription. Barry carries all the latest designer style of frames and can customize your frame and lenses to suit your particular needs. When needing a new pair of glasses that not only fit perfect but look good while still offering incredible vision give Optique Unique a call or stop on by.  I'm a consumer who expects quality for my hard-earned dollar and Optique Unique delivers that in spades. Great people! Great place! Barry and the staff will take care of you. When you go there, they will show you the top of the line, not because they need you to buy-- but because they believe in their products. I can tell you first hand that their products are superior. I usually go there to buy prescription sunglasses. I just bought a new pair with progressive lens, and they are beyond awesome. The last pair I purchased from them lasted me 6 years. 6 Years! went to OQ in Jan 2011 to get my 3 y/o's prescription glasses made on the recommendation of the ophthalmologist. Once the sticker shock wore off, the glasses have paid for themselves, several times over. My kid has put them to the roughest use possible. Its a very pleasant experience shopping for eyewear at OQ - specially for kids. Several plus points: 1. the selection is great 2. the warranty T's and C's are very generous (very important when buying kids glasses) 3. the kids frames were especially light weight and very well engineered. It really does make a difference who grinds your lenses. Live and learn. Repeated experience now requires I spend the extra money to gain my local optician's skill and experience selecting the best lens manufacturer and properly grinding and centering my lenses. More than once I tried other discounted or less expensive opticians, optometrists and the internet, but for whatever reason I gave in, and went for the extra cost, it has paid off in spades. What a difference - one I never would have expected nor believed. The lenses are crystal clear, they are thinner than ever, but most incredibly, I really see better than ever.
