The doctors are okay. The doctor I saw was attentive and responsive both the first time they made my glasses and the second time since the first pair of lenses were not acceptable. However if you go there, once you have the prescription in hand and they try to hustle you to look at frames and order glasses, say you have a cousin in the business and head straight for the door. Frames and lenses are way too expensive and at best, no better quality than you'll get elsewhere. read more

We had a horrible experience with the eye treatment for my son. We were tossed around with different treatments and it took them 8 months into the treatment to figure out. This had to do with a child's eyes and they really didn't care. When we got so frustrated with all that they put my son through, they got upset and was extremely defensive and blamed us for being upset. Sadly they didn't understand how much mental distress their poor care has caused for us especially when it comes to your child. Please do all the research before signing up with them for any treatment especially for your child. i will NEVER recommend this place for eye treatments. read more

Wonderful doctors and staff. A bit on the pricey side, but worth it. Good quality products that are durable and last a long time.

For one thing they said they were understaffed and because of that they couldn't answer the phone for four days. I called and left a message each and every day until I got a callback. The secretary who called me back was impolite and unhelpful. When I asked her why the appointment was made so far out, she couldn't answer and then hung up the phone on me. Needless to say, I do not know about the doctors care and bedside manner, but administratively I feel like they might be a bit of a mess. Personally, I had a very bad experience. read more

My first time trying a medical practitioner based on yelp reviews and it was not a good idea! i told the technician that i was getting headaches with my old rx glasses and i wanted a new number and explained the same to the ophthalmologist. He barely spoke a few words and was rather rude in my opinion. Midway through my testing he sent me outside to look at frames (they were overpriced and random brands i had not head about - the snooty technician said they are high end handmade stuff - bravo!). The prefer the selection and savings at Costco and Pearle Vision. Upon returning to the physician he was quiet, i told him i had a family history of glaucoma and he told me nothing about my tension or anything and asked for some pictures being taken (which were not covered by my insurance plan obviously) and asked to schedule a follow up appointment. I have gone to Dr. Shamim for years and she does a through examination and is kind. To top it all off, this doctor gave me the exact same prescription as the glasses i had taken with me! total waste of time and money! Im glad its January of 2018 so i can find a new physician and get a new evaluation! read more

You know how some people work at certain restaurants and end up never eating at that particular chain again because they find out all the dirty secrets by working there? Well, I worked at Somerset Eye Care for a brief time and despite knowing all the 'secrets,' I came back to be a patient myself (and will continue to do so!) Although I didn't work there for too long, I got to experience patient care and eye care with hand-picked staff that truly do care about their patients first hand. I knew about all the obstacles we would go through for and with our patients. To be honest, before working at SEC, I didn't have an eye exam for at least 7 years. (Yikes, I know.) I went back for their Trunk Show this past Wednesday, got my eyes checked out, and picked out a pair of glasses. It was a little different going back as a patient, but I was comfortable. I knew I was in good hands and that everyone was well-trained and equipped with the right technology. During the exam, I mentioned that I felt like I was going cross-eyed and sure enough, I actually kind of am. After some additional testing, Dr. Bethany explained to me what was happening and my options. (Please note: I did not get past Bio 101 in college so she put it all into words I could understand clearly) It's a great feeling to be able to ask questions about something as important about your eyes and walk out knowing you actually get it! For anyone who is concerned about insurance, just give them a call! They'll go over all of your benefits with you. As for me, I'm hoping I'll have eye exams in my future insurance policies but I know I'll be going to see them every year, even if I'm paying out of pocket. :) read more

GO HERE! You'll be making the best decision for your eyes and yourself! I recently moved to New Jersey and Somerset Eye Care was recommended to me by my new GP. My first appointment fell during a terrific snow storm, and SEC called me in plenty of time before my eye appointment to make sure I felt safe coming during the snow and offered to reschedule if I couldn't venture outside. I also received an email confirming that option. This level of care and customer service is exceptional! During my appointment the staff was kind and courteous as well as very professional. It turns out I had a non-threatening eye issue but it still unnerved me. Dr. Bethany researched which we now know is a benign birth defect, but she found the information for me and even called me at home to put my fears to rest. Her explanations were easy to understand and thorough and I feel absolutely comfortable asking her questions or for more information. Their selection of glasses frames is phenomenal and I felt like a model with the specialist who really helped me select the best pair for my face and my personality. I recently had a semi-emergency and the office was able to get me in immediately and see to my needs. Their care and service is unmatched by any other eye specialist I've encountered. read more

UPDATE OCT 2014: I feel so strongly about this office that I wanted to update my review and share again how impressed I am with the quality of care and service I receive here. I was in recently for my annual check up and received the same thorough examination as always. They have recently expanded and opened up a new office so I was wondering how they were managing the transition and bringing on new folks since one of the things they do so well is train their employees and instill a high standard of customer service in them. I was not disappointed. I was happy to meet Steve, who helped me pick out a fabulous pair of Tory Burch frames. And Dr. Bethany, as always, took great care in looking at a known problem spot and referring me to a specialist to make sure everything is okay. I can't say enough great things about this office and staff. My prior review: I have been going to Somerset Eye Care for several years since moving to NJ. I found them through my insurance coverage and have stayed with them because of the exceptional care and service. I originally lived 10 minutes away but now drive 30-40 minutes each year for my annual eye exam because the care and attention are so worth it. I have very poor eyesight, have had glasses since I was 8 years old, so I have very high standards when it comes to my eyecare. I have seen all three doctors at this practice and find them all to be incredibly caring, competent and thorough. Not only are the doctors exceptional but you can tell they place a high emphasis on patient care and satisfaction in the way their staff is trained. Everyone from the front desk, to the assistants to the eyeglass center are exceptionally courteous, friendly and knowledgeable. Speaking of the eye glasses...I'm a bit of a junky. I have three pairs of glasses from this office. They carry a wonderful range of fashionable frames and it's always a tough choice. I'll often come in with an idea of what I'm interested in and they'll help me find the perfect frame. I also purchase contact lenses from this office. I love that the office is connected to technology. I get reminders via email and fill out patient forms and surveys online. I want to start out by stating that this is the first ever review I have written for anything online- no product, recipe, store reviews ever. And I spend quite a bit of time online. So that right there I think says something about how great this office and their staff is. I have been a patient of this office for close to 4yrs now and never once have I had an appointment where I left with a single complaint. One year I was having issues with my contacts that required weekly visits over the course of many months...and as others have stated I was seen and examined each visit with no cost to me until the issue was resolved. It got to the point where I started looking forward to my visits and was somewhat disappointed when the problem was solved. I recently took my 6yo daughter for her first eye exam. This was the first visit where I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Joy. I was hesitant at first thinking of how positive my visits with Dr. Bethany and Jonathan were and that someone else could not live up to their standards. But I was very pleasantly wrong! All three doctors are wonderful, friendly and super knowledgeable. I have purchased contacts and many sets of glasses for both myself and now my daughter. Compared to other larger offices I felt their selection of frames was smaller, but only bc they have the best and most stylish pairs to choose from. Before even sitting down to try on my first set of frames their staff explained to me exactly what my insurance covered and how I can get the most for my money. I have been a patient of Dr. Bethany (and, on occasion, Dr. Jonathan) since 1995. They've been excellent throughout--during one period, I went through no fewer than 5 types of contacts in a span of a month. Dr. Bethany saw me twice a week, without fail, without charging me, until we managed to find a pair of contacts that fit well and worked. The office in Somerset is clean, well-organized, and extremely efficient (all of your records are digital, for example, and appointments are confirmed via email). They have late hours and weekend hours, too. This office has that "personal touch" that you don't find nowadays--when you call, a person picks up, not an automated recording. The office is clean and well kept. The only reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 is because of the very few variety of frames to choose from. There weren't many brand options available. I was referred to Somerset Eye Care through my insurance (Horizon BCBS). What a great experience! I was called in at my appointment time and found all support staff to be very pleasant. The Technician explained all preliminary tests prior to performing them, and used alcohol wipes on all equipment prior to use. As I waited for the doctor to come in, the Technician returned to the room and advised me that she needed to redo one of the previous tests, because the pictures taken were not clear enough. I LOVED this! Why? Because it showed just how serious routine tests are taken by staff. She could've simply used the "close enough" approach which could have resulted in something detrimental to my vision in the future. When I finally met with Dr. Jonathan, he took his time performing additional vision tests and provided me with a new prescription. But the story continues.... Today I had an "eye" emergency. While blowing out a candle, some of the wax/soot blew into my eye and attached to my iris. Being familiar only with this office, that I had visited just two days prior, I called to see if they were able to handle this type of emergency. I was given an appointment to come in within the hour. This time I met with Dr. Bethany. I immediately noticed her impressive bedside manner. After explaining to her occurred, she began the procedure of removing the debris from my eye. Thereafter, she provided me with discharge instructions and advised me to feel free to contact the office over the weekend should there be any concerns or symptoms of infection. (My incident occurred on a Friday.) I highly recommend this practice for its caring and knowledgable staff as well as excellent bedside manner. read more

You need to watch their billing and claim submissions to your insurance. Although my wife hasn't required glasses, she is a patient as well and referred me. So I Made an appointment for an eye exam as they are an in network provider with my insurance. I knew going in my insurance covered the exam with a $25 co-pay and also include up to $300 for hardware (Frames and lenses). Went in for the exam, and was told I needed glasses, which I was expecting, and the primary reason I was there. I was told my insurance did not cover hardware. I told them I thought they did, and again was told no. So I paid the $549.00 for the glasses. When I went back to pick up my glasses, I asked again about my insurance coverage, and was told again that the glasses were not covered. After a couple of weeks I checked the claims submitted and they submitted only the eye exam, the frames and lenses were not submitted as claims, nor was the photograph they took of my eye. I called my insurance company and told them what happened. Insurance told me that glasses are covered and since they are under contract with bcbs they are legally supposed to submit all services rendered. They called Somerset Eye Care on my behalf to have them resubmit the claim, which they did. When I called to speak to Steven, the Insurance coordinator at Somerset Eye Care, for an explanation, he told me they never submit for hardware and haven't in over 20 years. When I told him that was illegal because they are contracted to submit all services rendered as a participating provider, he mocked me and said I was wrong. Well I filed a formal complaint with my insurance company, and the state board, because they are fraudulently excluding claims that could potentially get paid by insurance and in essence ripping their patients off. I don't know if this their way of not honoring the PPO fees for glasses that they are contracted to accept, but I will never go back to this place again, and I'm still waiting for my refund which I used my Flex spending account and will lose on 1/1, and could have used the funds to pay another medical bill. I have been going to another optometrist in the area for the past 5 yrs and although they are very nice people they need to update their equipment. After my son and I were both given incorrect scripts (to strong) that was the last straw! I decided to go to Somerset Eye Care based on the reviews and I am so glad I did. The establishment is really customer service oriented and has all the updated equipment and technology for eye care. The moment you walk through the doors everyone is so nice, professional and helpful. The atmosphere was pleasant not crowded and I didn't feel rushed or feel like I was in a large vision center. I've been a patient of this office for a few years under the supervision of Dr. Bethany. My visits are always pleasant as the staff is courteous and efficient. In August, I reported for my annual eye exam and a new pair of contact lenses. Towards the end of my visit there was an odd sensation in my eye. After some examination, nothing was seen and we thought it may be a little discomfort that should be watched. However, the discomfort didn't subside, and I had to return. Dr. Bethany wasn't in that day, so I was seen by Dr.Ansel. He was very thorough, conducting additional examinations that revealed an infection. Over the course of three months, I had to visit various times to check the progress of my eye. Each visit with him was just as thorough. Dr. Ansel was honest and efficient at presenting each plan of treatment. He's personable and I am greatly pleased with his level of expertise. I highly recommend his services! read more

I am new to the practice due to a move, and thanks to the reviews on Yelp, I chose this practice. I am truly impressed with Somerset Eye Care! Andrew was the tech who saw me first, such a personable young man with a great "bedside manner"! I sorta freaked when we walked into the first exam room when I thought I saw the glaucoma puff test machine. He assured me it wasn't and explained to me every test before starting it. Then I met Dr. Joy. What a pleasure too! I felt at ease like I was hanging out with one of my girlfriends. Though none of my girlfriends pokes and prods at my eyes. After discussing my history of a few traumas to the eyes over the years, I received the most through eye exam I have ever gotten. Makes me wonder what my previous doctors hadn't done. Then it was off to check out the eye glasses. The girl was very patient with me while I tried on what seemed like a hundred pairs of glasses. Unfortunately though my insurance barely contributes to them and they were well beyond my budget. They were very understanding and didn't hesitate to write me my script to go through my Union program. All in all I will definitely return, and highly recommend this practice. read more

My family including young children have been using Somerset Eye Care for many years and they have always been top-notch. We have mostly seen Dr Bethany but have also seen Dr Jonathan. Both answer questions and take their time in the visit. We have our annual eye exams where they worked very nicely with the kids and where they were very accommodating to schedule us together. We have had emergency / urgent visits where the doctor has seen us with no appointment. We have had emails and phone calls returned for situation where we were not sure how to proceed including during non-business hours. We've had followup emails from Dr Bethany just to see how our child was doing after we had cause to contact her and had already completely treatment with another doctor at an ER. I have been taken care of Dr. Bethany twice and I have now convinced my entire family to come here. For years, I have always had an eye issue despite having 20/20 vision (wouldn't want to bore you with details), but when I would go to doctors, they wouldn't really assist the problem beyond a standard check-up. Thankfully, my insurance changed and I needed to find a new eye doctor when I found this place on yelp. When Dr. Bethany assisted me, she went to the root of the problem and actually diagnosed me. Her knowledge is phenomenal and really tries to educate the patient instead of just giving them a prescription expecting you to trust them. She came up with two solutions: one was vision therapy and the other was glasses. My insurance declined vision therapy so I went with glasses and believe it or not, my eye issue has improved after wearing glasses. I am able to concentrate while reading and I have greater depth perception. Some of my older cousins with the same condition ended up having to get eye surgery because their doctors failed to recognize what Dr. Bethany did. Scary to think if my insurance did not change, I would be in the same boat. But I am proud to say that I now happily come here and I love their state of the art technology.
