It's filled with beautiful period antiques, some which are familiar to me from my granny's home, that immediately transported me back my childhood. The grounds are beautiful with large Magnolia trees and 120 yr old Live Oak trees with Spanish moss everywhere and there's Azaleas, Hydrangeas and a variety of other plants and shrubs. The grounds all around are meticulously maintained giving the property vibrant look and appeal. Originally it was the home of Charles and Susan Swift and their 11 children, it was purchased in 1976 by Nik Coles. Before his death in 2007, he bequeathed the home to the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission. In 2009 the home was opened to the public and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A debt of gratitude is owed to Mr. Nik Coles for his contributions in saving one of the most colorful and outstanding examples of the turn of the century Gulf Coast architecture in our community. The Swift-Coles Historic Home is now open to the public for summer tours. The guided tours leads visitors through the 16 room historic tidewater mansion and grounds to experience how life along the Bon Secour River would have been nearly 100 years ago. There's lots of legends and lore about this place being haunted, many about the deceased displeasure with the renovations. I have been here several times and the last was recently with #1 son and my neighbor Claudine for a late night paranormal investigation with Panhandle Paranormal Group. It indeed was very cool! Its pedestrian friendly design features quaint streets with tree-lined sidewalks, decorative lamp posts and inviting seating areas offering residents and visitors a year-round destination to dine, shop and play.  Waterway Village has a rich history. Gulf Shores was originally settled as a small fishing village in the 1850s, and the Intracoastal Waterway's completion in 1937 played a crucial role in the area's development. Today, Waterway Village is part of a community resilience strategy to preserve the historic working waterfront heritage. Currently there's fine establishments here like Acme Oyster House, Tacky Jack's, The Sloop, Big Beach Brewery, LuLu's and more. The area continues to evolve, with a new pedestrian bridge spanning the intercoastal waterway, Legendary Marina and Yacht Club will be opening soon, and a big beautiful Margaritaville is beginning construction shortly, and a proposed new development, 24 Canal Place, aiming to further enhance Waterway Village. We attended several of these, most recently to rock out with 2 groups, Jamell Richardson and Joslyn & The Sweer Compression. Having a full kitchen with a real refrigerator is one of the benefits of staying in a Staybridge Suites. We liked the room (in comparison to the previous hotel room) since it had so many outlets to charge our computers and devices. There was also a nightlight in the bathroom, so we didn't need to brighten the whole room during our nightly visits. This bed was way more comfortable than the other hotel, and the room was truly dark. With no alarm set, we had no idea of the actual time that we woke. And we couldn't hear a thing from the other rooms. We are at the start of a week across the South. This hotel is certainly on our "come back" list! Friendly staff, clean room, nice bedroom, a full kitchen and a good price. Very hard to beat.

Most concerning was the presence of a live roach in our room--clearly visible and captured in a photo. While it stayed still long enough for the picture, the fact that it was moving around beforehand was unsettling. Service was mixed. Upon arrival, the staff was reasonably courteous, but checkout was impersonal--when I handed in the keys, the front desk agent didn't speak, only giving a slight head shake when I asked if anything else was needed. As an IHG Platinum member, I was surprised to learn that the latest checkout time allowed was 12 PM, rather than the usual 2 PM. On the positive side, the bed was comfortable, and the water pressure was good with very hot water available. However, the pillows lacked support, the TV was small and didn't function properly, and the Wi-Fi was so slow it was nearly unusable. Breakfast was average; I was disappointed not to see the egg white omelets typically offered at other IHG locations. We also ran out of lotion during our stay, which has never happened to me at a hotel before. Overall, despite some redeeming qualities, I would not choose to stay at this property again.
