Yesterday, that dream came true. He hooked and reeled in his very own salmon--completely unassisted--with just a little support holding the rod. He spent extra time helping my son, answering questions, encouraging him, and making him feel like a real angler. Autumn clearly has a passion for whales and gave us enough education to fuel our fire for the animals. We saw calves and Sasha and we were treated with the experience of a whale breaching right in front of the boat! Overall a wonderful experience and looking forward to another tour with ATA! Also to mention the wonderful salmon bake! Fresh fish and live music with covered seating and a creekside view. The short hike to the waterfall was fun too! Special shout out to our wonderful bus driver too! She drives the "sunshine" bus and while her name escapes me, her impression does not! She pointed out an eagle's nest, told stories of the legendary wolf Romeo, and gave us a quick but detailed history of the town. Bonus that she's from our neck of the woods!

Issue: i understand the weight balance but my four year old was placed on the outside and it made for a nerve racking trip for me holding on to him for dear life! My issue- our tour guide. Nice and strong but I couldn't understand anything he was telling us because I was in the front and he has a very very thick accent. I feel like my oldest did not get the experience I hoped for because of the language barrier. Aka she didnt learn anything. Overall, it's beautiful and fun. But cold. We did get wet. We came in on the Disney Wonder. Booking was a breeze. They arranged for a taxi to meet us when we got off the ship and drove us to the boat. Nick and his dad run this labor of love and was happy to answer all of our questions and tell us his story. What a good dude. For a few hours I felt like a local. The boat is clean and beautiful and my 7 and 8 year old had a blast. Don't book through the cruise ships. Book straight through this company. They are an Alaskan gem. You won't regret it.

The Captain Mike was friendly and the young deck hand Talon was very helpful and did his job well. We paid extra to go to the Icey Straights where the big fish were supposed to be and only raised 1 fish of decent size. My family likes to put fish in the freezer for the year. I understand fishing is fishing but I expressed my intent to take fish home and not just here to vacay fish and seemed to be put on a chicken ranch. So we tossed probably 4 or 5 small halibut back due to small size and the Captain says thats it we are done halibut fishing and going Salmon fishing. I didn't like being rushed off the Halibut fishing but ok let's go get some Salmon. This was a mess the rods and trolling gear wasn't set up right. Our trolling speeds were not at the right pace and we were using gear that was supposed to be rigged with bait but wasn't. We only landed one Salmon but it was to small. Now frankly the Captain was a nice guy but I got the impression that he didn't really give two shits about putting us on quality fish and was only interested in our money. So we get back to the dock and the deck hand is told to only gut and dehead our fish because we were going to take it to the processor for packing and freezing stating they like it better this way. Ok sure but whatever lets get it there. We get to the processor snd they are closed! They closed at 5 and we weren't told that they closed at 5 we were under the assumption due to info on the processors website that they closed at 7! I feel like that is something the Captain of the boat could have mentioned or at least should have known. So if you plan to go out with these guys do not spend the extra money going to the Icey Straights and don't expect the Captain to care about putting you on quality fish. I would suggest finding another boat from a local guy who wants to put you on quality fishing.

We were supposed to go out with Captain Toni but when we arrived to fish, however late in the morning we never saw her or her boat in the dock. We never got a call from her and so we called her on arrival only to find she (Toni) the Captain, had sent her boat out fishing with Nani her helper and other Captain, Ben Olson. Long story short, we were left wondering and waiting for Ben, but he did a great job in salvaging what was about to be a terrible day. For the fishing i give Ben props and Nani did a great job, but the actual booking, timing and arrangement made by Toni was not what we were told. One thing on the phone, another when we got there. She assured me she would take us out on our charter upon booking, then when we arrived (she) was not taking us out. She told me we forgot to fill out a reservation form after taking a $700.00 deposit from us in May 2012 for a charter agreement in July 2012. Call her before you fish with her, even if you gave her a deposit..and don't forget your reservation form as well or you could end up being told you forgot it even if you gave her a 50% deposit....so much for guarantees of charters with deposits!!

The guides knew their stuff, and helped our group feel safe and comfortable, despite the choppy waves. They gave us some great guidance about steering and controlling the kayaks. They were so low key and fun it was almost as if we were a group of 6 friends going out for a paddle. They pointed out landmarks and we even saw eagles feeding on the shore - awesome. I would recommend this outfitter without hesitation, and will use them again if I'm ever back in Juneau. Thanks for making a memorable trip even more fantastic!

Put us on the fish and absolutely wrecked the halibut and cod. Deb ran the back of the boat like it was her life's mission to ensure we all caught fish. The skipper put us on the fish and was a wealth of knowledge about the area, the regulations and was a damn good skipper. His communication skills with his guests was excellent and the communication between he and Deb should be TED Talk. We saw whales like we were on a whale watching boat, (they breached), sea lions and eagles. Really an excellent trip and we look forward to eating our catch when we get home. Honestly, even if we were unsuccessful with catching any fish, (it's called fishing, not catching), they still would have gotten an excellent review. This team was amazing.

Hey Yelpers!!! Wanted to post about my experience with Juneau Sportfishing. Booked the excursion…read morethrough my cruise ship (NCL). I had a great experience with this company. Captain Matt and deckhand Billy did an awesome job all around. Captain Billy was knowledgeable of the spots to look for fish and Billy was very fast at getting the lines in the water and helping us when we did hook up. When we were wrapping up, Billy prepped the fish we caught. If you are staying locally, you can just take them with you. I've f you are on a ship, like me, they have a company that will process and ship your fish home for you. It's not cheap, especially if you catch a lot of fish. You also have the option of releasing the fish you catch. That's up to you. The bus ride to and from the port was very nice. They still provide you with a snack bag of crackers, some different spreads (one was smoked salmon, another a soft cheese), and some sliced sausage. It was very nice. It was overall a great experience and I would definitely go out with Captain Matt again. I will end with this... My review is not based on how we did. It's fishing, and you gotta know going in that you might not catch anything. A guide should help your chances, but nothing is for certain. Go for the experience. Enjoy the beauty of Alaska and the wildlife that is around you. This is a good way to do it. Check them out! By the way, my group of 5 people did well...

There is a pier that overlooks the outside of the hatchery. It has gorgeous picturesque views. There is also the inside part of the hatchery where the young salmon are hatched. Last there is a gift shop that also has a tank with some interesting sea creatures as well as a petting tank. You can sample some of the smoked salmon in the gift shop. Overall, it was a unique experience, and we enjoyed it.
