Service here is excellent! The bartenders are SO nice and helpful when making decisions about drinks. They'll make you basically anything you want and even create custom drinks if you say you like a certain kind of liquor. Also happy hour !! It doesn't reaallly feel like a speakeasy but it's still a really cool vibe

If you just happen to stumble upon this place like I did on my first visit you will be blown away. A non-descript store front that hides a fantastic bar with dark academia vibes. The theme changes every few months and on my most recent visit it was a vampire (What we do in the shadows) theme. They have an array of really unique drinks and the bartenders are always happy to help, for example switching out tequila for mezcal in one of their seasonal specials. They also have a fantastic old fashioned, I highly recommend. Sitting at the bar is my favorite seat at Ordinary and their snacks are also very solid. This is one of my favorite places to take people visiting from out of town.

I believe this bar changes theme every few months. When we visited, they had a "what we do in the shadows" theme going on that was on par with a vampire/halloween theme. You buzz the doorbell and someone lets you in. We sat at the bar and had attentive service. I had a bee's knees which was classic and good. We shared some food and the cheese plate was awesome. They have some interesting drinks that are smoked and would definitely try one of those next time. There are two bathrooms located in the back. There's a ton of seating and the space is pretty big.

Issa vibe! A spooky, but not spooky, vintage, Transylvania, vibe that is. You have to ring a doorbell and wait for the host to let you in. Once you're in, you can experience the dim ambiance and quirky decor whole enjoying amazing cocktails. They have a good selection of whiskey and they make a mean old fashioned. It also looked like they had some cocktails with amazing presentation. I think I saw some smoke!

Want to see some masters at their craft? Then you need to get here for drinks. Yes they have a small kitchen with some amazing snacks being pumped out, but you want to come for the drinks. They do seasonal items and just talk with the bartenders and tell them what you like or what you want to try and they have you covered.

Came here for drinks post dinner as a group of 4. We were lucky to get the last available table as the place was full. It's a cute speakeasy with nice and cozy vibes. We enjoyed it and the drinks were good. I would come back for sure!

Came here for the first time and only had one drink but it was SO good. The "frosty's got a hot one" I believe. It was a hot chocolate with bourbon and a delicious whipped cream. The host and bartender were both friendly and regularly checked in. The ambiance really speaks for itself as soon as you open the door it's gorgeous and cozy. Would definitely like to come back and recommend

Not a worthwhile experience based on quality of product and service. We felt our server was impatient and rushing us the whole evening, eager to churn tables. Everything is fine but kinda expensive for what it is. Wine selection was all a bit pricey so I grabbed the one affordable option and it was pretty good. Friend's grilled cheese was tiny and basic for the price. Server continued being passive aggressive. We would have liked another round but felt uncomfortable so asked for the check. We were then asked to leave. I have never, ever been outright told to leave because they wanted me to spend more money. At any establishment. Anywhere in the world. Outright disrespectful when we did nothing wrong. Will not be back and do not recommend. There are many great spots for a drink within a few blocks where you feel like a valued guest instead of a dollar sign.

This speakeasy is elegant and cozy. Find seating at the long church styled bar or at an intimate dark lit table in the back. The server was attentive and I was sat right away on a Friday happy hour evening. I was a bit disappointed with the lack of food options for happy hour but the cocktails are what you should come here for. Several creative and flavorful cocktails to start or end your night on the right note.

We came here for a casual hang out after dinner during Valentine's day weekend and it was great. The staff is friendly, food was yummy (wish we ate more but we were full from dinner), and the drinks were very well crafted. Look at the foam on my drink! can't wait to try this again

We stopped at Ordinary while killing time waiting for the next the next train home. I liked the space heater that was provided after the first door; a literal warm welcome. We grabbed a seat at the bar which wasn't as full as the seated section so there was no wait. We were immediately greeted by a friendly bartender with two glasses of water so that was a major plus. I love classic cocktails but the dust cloud Negroni caught my eye under the "From the Lab" section of the drink menu. The first sip definitely packs a punch that I wasn't braced for. It reminded me of an original flavored cough drop left at the bottom of a glass of alcohol. Thankfully my palate adjusted and I enjoyed the drink after that! Looking forward to the next visit.

This place was really nice I went here for cocktails and they made me the coolest drink! They brought it out in a lantern it smelled like fire and smoke was coming out of it it was so cool! The drink wasn't on the menu but I asked for something cool with tequila and it was just so good! They did a great job! And the hospitality was perfect they were attentive and super friendly all in all great service I'll definitely go back! To enter this place you have to enter a little haul and then ring a doorbell for them to come and open the door it's so cool!

Really cool vibe, very interesting drinks! GET THE GRILLED CHEESE. Skip the shishitos unless you're really craving veggies. The King is a great drink, though I wasn't expecting caramel to be the most forward flavor. Four Legs Layered was also really interesting and complex, but be warned: 1) it's got a LOT of alcohol, and 2) the top layer is just oatmeal stout, so maybe skip it if you're not a beer fan.

Its right on the corner of Chapel and Olive. We walked from our hotel, so parking was not an issue for us. The minute we walked in, we loved the place. We were warmy greeted and the hostess said she recognized my handsome dining partner. Well, come to find out, the hostess is the partner in this wonderful restaurant with Chef Roland. We met them both before as we had frequented a Norwalk restaurant run by them that we loved and that sadly closed down sometime ago. They opened this spot in New Haven about 1 year ago. Lovely European vibe to the whole setting and menu. Open kitchen. Delicous offerings. We ordered the eggs Benedict with a croissant in place of the English Muffin. I was so happy they were able to accomodate this request. Also a full legitimate English Breakfast! Amazing. A moctail and a pot of loose leaf black tea. All was outstanding! Outstanding! The service was top notch and we never felt rushed. They have daily themed specials in addition to their regular menu offerings. Beatiful bar area. We are so happy to have found them and will be returning often! We highly recommend!

When the food finally arrived, the quality was unacceptable. The jerk chicken was raw, which is a serious food safety concern, and the rice and beans were undercooked. After such a long wait, we expected much better. To be fair, the restaurant did remove the jerk chicken dinners from our bill after we brought the issue to their attention, and that was appreciated. However, it did not make up for the excessive wait times, missing items, and poorly prepared food. Overall, the experience was frustrating and disappointing. The storys are a bit contrived for a neighborhood that unfortunately cares little for it, as i've seen. Again alot of things on menu were out of stock. I came to New Haven for a show down the block and strangely I was lured into something that was proposed as an extension of NYC however that it was not. Lastly, I get the concept but at certain hours the same Islander vibe gets pretty Banal after the 5/6 song that sounds like that last 5/6 songs.

We arrived on a Monday around peak dinner time, but there was essentially no wait (apparently uncommon according to my friend -- just a delightful consequence of dining at a college town during the summer). We split a medium pizza (1/2 elote mexican street corn and 1/2 bbq brisket), proving to be more than enough for two plus a more than ample amount of leftovers. Recently, I've gravitated toward thinner pizzas, a far cry from the typical Detroit (foccacia-esque) style pizzas I used to prefer, and BAR's pizza is akin to a flatbread yet very thin, another fallen angel to the GLP's. The undercarriage boasts a brilliant crust, almost cracker-like. However, it should be noted that the pizza is indulgent all the same. The elote pizza is quite possibly the most memorable, unique pizza I've ever had; it arrives almost crimson-red with a generous layer of corn and takis atop. It's still incredibly well balanced despite the hodgepodge of varied toppings. It's hard to pick a favorite between this and the bbq brisket though; while one is incredibly unique the other is simply sumptuous, nothing pedestrian about either of the two. The service is also impeccable, almost rivaling that of southern hospitality. I always thought Californians were friendly but something is in the air every time I visit New Haven. Incredible!

Based on a recommendation, four friends and I visited for an earlier dinner on Cinco de Mayo (yes,…read morewrong type of cuisine, but we were in town and this restaurant was on our list.) BAR is an interesting restaurant: open air, picnic tables, open space, paper plates, no utensils unless you ask for them, etc. We were greeted right away by a less than friendly waiter who seemed peeved we didn't have a drink to order right away. Strike one. After a few minutes, everyone put their drink order in and I asked if the bartender could make me a mojito since it wasn't on the menu. The waiter said yes, so I waited. Then came the mojito. It was the worst "mojito" I've tasted in my life. I'm not one to send a drink back because of an "I don't taste any alcohol" excuse, but this was BAD. It tasted like margarita mix with lime and mint sprigs thrown in. It was absolutely terrible. When I double checked with the waiter if the drink was an original mojito he simply said yes, not "is something wrong with the drink?" or "would you like to send it back?" The drink was so bad I told him I couldn't drink it. He was peeved again. Strike two. I asked for a soft drink instead and the soda was flat (strike 3), but at this point I just needed something to drink... because who wants to have water with their pizza? Then came the time to make a dinner choice. My mission was to try the mashed potato pizza. It was hands down AMAZING!! Mashed potatoes and bacon on a pizza. Yes, please!! This was the only saving grace from my experience. I would return to BAR again if only for that pizza! Two of my friends had the clam pizza and the pepperoni/mushroom. Both enjoyed their own! Warming: New Haven pizza is thin crust. I got two meals out of a small, so if you visit with a group, consider ordering a few small pizzas so you can taste a few. I would've given BAR 4 or 5 stars, but the unpleasant waiter, the "mojito," and the flat sofa made for a trifecta, so I'm giving my visit 3 stars. If I find myself in New Haven again, I'll be back! Hopefully my next update will be 5 stars!
