Check their site. Park whenever there are openings. Walk around and take in the sights. There are multiple little trails that take you into the woods or just stay on the main park and see the buildings. If you get a chance, drive it wander around the neighborhoods for some truly magnificent houses and contemporary homes. They are nice.

Lady Blues, show your pride!…read more Yes, I am an alumnus of the great St. Mary's Academy (SMA)--the only all-women's college preparatory school on the West Coast--class of 2003. I think it's safe for us all to say that we have memories from our golden years, whether they be good or bad. Thankfully, 98.6 percent of my memories of good ol' SMA are very fond. From the spirituality of the Encounter retreat (ask me sometime!) to Ms. Gorman's STD slideshow (the cauliflower penis scarred us all) and falling off the Ark, those four years were great. I remember Sister Linda (the Prez of Student Affairs) would walk through crowded SMA dances, and separate girls from their dates who were dancing too provocatively, telling them to leave room for the Holy Spirit. And if you were caught again, you were taken to the cool-down room, where Mr. Hemmen (a religion teacher) would kindly lecture you. Obviously, *I* never made it that far. While SMA wasn't the school for everyone (i.e., the extremely boy crazy, and the ones whose parents forced them to go there), I thought it was the perfect place for me. It definitely fostered my growth as an intelligent and well-rounded person, and the teachers and staff never treated us like kids, even though we were in our teens. And I have to say that I feel I received an A++ education that TOTALLY prepared me for university. I mean, when I went to college, I had LESS homework than during SMA, and my classes were way EASIER than my high school ones. Pow! Take that! They taught me how to stand up for myself and how to get involved and ask questions. When I went to college, I was surprised to see that not many people were vocal like I was. Oh, and St. Mary's does not have uniforms (common misconception), and last time I checked they have the most liberal dress code of all the Portland private schools. Yes, you can wear flip-flops (Central Catholic doesn't allow that)! And SMA is right downtown. I took Tri-Met to school every day for four years! And because it's not a huge campus, you can leave the grounds for lunch after your freshman year. AWESOME. The teachers rock, the students rock, and they offer good financial aid packages. And I like the aid program they've got going on: For every $100 they give you in aid, the student has to do one hour of service work. It totally got me involved during my time. Oh, and no one's mascot has anything on SMA's (Laura N....that means your poet, too!): It's a blue music note. Ha! I've got nothing but love for this place. Send your baby girls here.

The…read moreconstruction of many of the main academic buildings seems to be steeped in the 1960's/70's but many of the newer buildings are quite modern and beautiful (the music building seemed to be a shining example). Classrooms are "smart" and offer easy ways to show power points and/or other media. In the spaces that we used - everything seemed to function very well. The college offers ample parking and the buildings and grounds seemed to be very well kept up.

In 2008, I began the Master of Arts in Ministry Leadership program at GFES. I graduated in 2012…read morewith a M.Div. Experiences early in ministry left me teetering on the edge of burn out and feeling completely inadequate and in no way up to the task of pastor. I applied to GFES hoping to learn more and become better equipped to serve the local church. In the end, classes in pastoral care, congregational leadership and the like prepared me to better serve the local church. Along the way, however, I learned some things that have been far more impactful and useful. The spiritual formation component of the GFES experience was one of the program's highlights. During my time at GFES, I became increasingly aware about myself; how I was relating to God; God's work in my life and God's movement in the world around. The cohort aspect of the program helped spark some of these revelations. After all, three years of posting together and sharing life together a few weeks out of the year, allows a person to forge bonds with those that s/he is learning with. Those bonds gave us permission to speak into one another's lives and to be present to one another as we worked out the issues of life with fear and trembling. While my education at GFES was oriented toward the practical and while spiritual formation was an emphasis, academics were by no means on the back burner. Academically, GFES helped me to rediscover my love of church history and historical theology. At the same time, GFES helped to pave the way for my acceptance to the University of Birmingham (UK) and a spot in their PhD program. My experience leads me to believe that GFES is a top-notch academic institution that prepares its seminarians for both future academic endeavors and ministry in local churches. The online learning community (OLC) means that students can undertake their studies while remaining in their local context, engaged in ministry.

We moved to Portland from the Netherlands, where he did little or nothing, and I am so happy to see him enjoying school, making new friends (whom I all like when I meet them), attending the Iron Chef Wednesday lunches, and thinking about his future and what he really wants to do with his life. When we attended the parent/teacher conferences together in October, he received one compliment after another from his teachers. Already encouraged by Ms. Chapman, the Principal, who answered my emails personally, and the really nice staff at LHS, who helped with documents and requirements for the IB and regular high school attendance, I realized that in real terms LHS has meant so much more for us. It was the base from which we chose our home and has helped determine our location and views on Portland. We like, no make that love, weird!!! Thank you Lincoln and thank you Stumptown.

I had never been to this Portland high school. But I did for a public event. This is a review of…read morethe auditorium as an event space. The auditorium is available for public rentals. The building is newer, 60's on a vast campus with more parking than most schools. The auditorium holds about 800 on the main floor and 1400 including the balcony. AV systems are up to date and the acoustics sounded good. They are easier to rent in Summer when school is out and they have their own security. Staff was solid.

All 3 of our kids went through Wilson and came out with pretty decent educations that prepared them…read morefor college. Their teachers could be meh, or they could be outstanding. All of the kids got through college and graduate school. BUT our experience was with Honors students. We have had exchange students who have been in the 'regular' classes and some of those classes are pretty sad. Not all, but some. We despair over the History curriculum in particular. The counselors are wonderful, but this is not an OES or a Jesuit, where the push to help kids get into private college is a priority. The relatively-new principal, Brian Chatard, is definitely making headway in improving the standards and pushing the school more towards responsibility and excellence. The school is solid, though not exceptional.
