Had an amazing time hanging out with the lively group at OWB this past Saturday. Tasted several Pinot Noirs with Suzanne (I think I got the right name?!) offering some very helpful guidance. She was an absolute delight as a bartender and I am bummed I'm not in town longer to stop back by and pick up more wines. It's been a rough couple years in downtown Portland, but OWOB is definitely back. Hours have now expanded (I'm told they're currently open Wed-Thurs 12-6, Fri 12-8, and Sat 2-7ish), unfortunately not the full pre-pandemic hours but both regulars and walk-ins are starting to come back now that Spring is here. A Pinot Noir flight is available as well as Champagne on Friday & Saturday plus occasional nibbles which will presumably be increasing if we are fortunate that Covid stays at bay. And of course you can buy bottles for taking home or even for drinking in the shop which is one of the better priced options for many. Oregon Pinot Noir and Champagne aren't cheap, but this is still one of the better priced options you'll find anywhere for glass pours or on-premise consumption. The boards are down off the windows, and business is picking up as of April 2022. Definitely stop in for some awesome wine and supporting a small local business during these difficult times. You likely won't be disappointed, and will have some great stories and memories afterward. This is PDX at it's unique best. read more

I want to live in this place. As soon as I walked in the door I immediately fell in love with its charm. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a couple different flights of Oregon Pinot. Each one of them was a little different and slightly unique in their own way. We enjoyed chatting with a fabulous gal behind the bar and eyeing so many bottles of wine on the shelves. Most of which I did not recognize labels and while I'm not a sommelier I do know a little bit about wine. Whenever I'm in Oregon I always drink Pinot noir, mostly because it just seems wrong not to, but mainly because I am indulging my husband, who LOVES Pinot Noir. I made some lovely discoveries of Pinot Noir rose, which I'm a huge fan of. The price points here are fair and reasonable for what you get. I will definitely look them up online and see about having some wines shipped to me. If we didn't have a dinner reservation I would've spent all night here. We chatted with some folks a few seats down from us who were so nice and friendly, and enjoying the wine and cheese plates. The atmosphere is so warm and inviting. Before I could say anything, a woman stepped out from behind the bar and said, "Sorry, we're closed." Ummmm, ok. So that explains all the customers still drinking? If you're closed, you're closed. "How much do you wanna bet that you'll be leaving with an ass slap!" Those were the words I said to my friend Laura N upon entering this fine drinking establishment on Saturday night. And whatdoyaknow, Ms Cleo was right because asses were slapped upon exit! Since arriving in Portland, I was on a mission for some tasty food and tasty wine, but the wine wasn't really delivering. So we decided to give this 5-star wine haunt a go on our way to dinner and see if it really lived up to the high star rating hype. Once in and seated at the bar, we met the lively and hysterical Jen. She IS this place. Laughs, jokes, smart ass remarks, a few colorful f bombs and we were definitely in the place we wanted to be. We decided to start with some bubbly because, well, is there a better way to begin a night out on the town? Newp. It was super tasty and definitely was the right choice. We then got roped into the conversation at the end of the bar and the laughs most definitely continued. Everyone here was super friendly and welcoming and when our glasses neared the empty point, they were generously filled by neighboring drinkers. Now THAT is the way a bar should be! They also had a ton of delicious sounding reds by the glass and offer nightly tasting deals to really treat your palate to a night out. You won't find dark sultry exposed brick walls, or flickering tea lights. Forget the dim lighting, smoooove jazzy jazz, sex-inducing theme that many wine bars go for. At first you may even think...hmm...5 stars. Really? Then you meet Jen -- and all the stars align. Blizaow!! You're faced with the most rambunctious wine-pouring connoisseur this side of, well, the world. Let's set one thing straight - she knows her champagne. We stared like deer in headlights (we had, to our defense, just been flashed...by a bartender...) someone from across the bar said "get 'em bubbles" and the next thing you know, an amazing bottle of champagne appeared before us. In less than 10 minutes, we had made friends with everyone in the place, and we were all simultaneously enamored and spell bound by Jen. Before long, neighbors were sharing champagne and we were toasting lord knows what -- the music, the new friendships, or perhaps even just for that euphoric cork popping, glass clinking sound. I asked the waitress about the $10 sampling (3 tastes) and whether I can get something that tastes like Turley (but obviously not Turley since that's from California) with that...and she said sure! My roommate asked for the same thing... ...it's a sampling that they randomly choose from their hundreds of bottles, and both my roommate and I ended up with different tastings. Cool...but they didn't even come to ask how we liked what they chose for us. Both of us really didn't like one of the tastings....blah. To top it off...when we got the bill, it was $32. Um....how does two $10 tastings turn to $32? Apparently, they charged us for the $16 high end tasting. I wasn't able to make a scene...so I decided to just pay the $32 plus tip. *rawr* read more

This is a really cute little wine shop and tasting room right by where I work. I've passed by it a dozen times until I finally noticed it, so it is easy to pass up. The inside is cozy and charming and comfortable. It's a great place to sip wine on a lazy afternoon or have a glass after a hard day of work. They have some really excellent wines here. They have a large selection of wines and it changes often. We had an excellent white flight for $10 and a great Willamette Valley Pinot Noir flight. They serve little snacks and bites, we had some tasty Jack cheese with Pearl Bakery bread. They also have Champagne flights and even something called Champagne Friday's. And, oh Champagne, how I love thee. Our service was good. She was on top of things and knowledgeable about the wine. I would recommend it here. read more

This is my happy day place. I come here when I am having a great day and want to really push it over the top in terms of happiness. The wine bar is Parisian cute, complete with wrought iron spiral staircase and vaulted picture windows. The wines list is expertly curated, the champagnes are eclectic and often very fringe. I am rating this place so little because I found it to be disgusting that my friend and I received glasses with lipstick on it still. Not only that but the lady who was there was eating food (strawberries) while serving people glasses of wine. Maybe it was just me, but I felt like eating in front of your guests as you are serving them wine doesn't come off as being professional. I stopped by here one for a $20 bottle of red for dinner with my Couch Surfing Host. They lady helped me choose a perfect bottle that came with a story (which my host of course loved!), Called Runaway Red. It was perfect for dinner if this occasion. Maybe it was just a bad day. Or the problem is in the advertising. This is NOT a place to go to learn about Oregon wines. AT ALL. If you know what you want already and don't mind the "sassy" bartender (I put that in quotes because I think they say "sassy" instead of "curses like a sailor and doesn't have any interest in her customers"), you'll be fine. But we were very excited about Oregon Wines on Broadway because of the New York Times. Maybe that was our mistake! The article said we could not learn more about Oregon wines anywhere. We only had a couple of days in Portland and chose, therefore, to go to this establishment rather than drive around wine country visiting vineyards. Big Mistake! Instead we were treated like bumpkins, given not a second of the barkeep's time even though there were only two other people in there -- people she knew and for whom she was pouring free really exciting wines. I felt like I was back in junior high and all the cool kids were ignoring me. I haven't felt that way since junior high, so that really tells you something about how unpleasant it was! We went in ready to spend money and try some of their best wines. Instead we were told to "just have the set flight," even though we tried really hard to get her to help us choose a more tailored experience. In the end we gave up and had both the cheaper and the more expensive flights. The wines were only kinda good. We had gone in intending to buy a case to ship home. Instead we bought nothing. So that was a lot of money she didn't make simply because she couldn't be bothered with us. As for the cursing thing -- I have a foul mouth myself and am proud of it! But this was weirdly really unpleasant. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, I've never written a bad review before and I feel kind of bad about it, but this was just such a disappointment since we'd chosen to do this instead of wine country. So, they have a large selection of wine. Great. When you are in from out of town and cannot get the staff to tell you much about the wine or what wineries to visit, the wine selection doesn't matter much. Our server fell into potty talk and some pretty vulgar cussing with her friends who also happened to be present. Hearing the words "sh!t" and "f@ck" loudly, over and over, particularly when speaking about the act, put a damper on our experience. We felt like we were interrupting a girls night out as our server went to sit down and drink with her friends and continue the unprofessional conversation. We were hoping to get some insight into Oregon wines here, but that seemed to be the last thing on our server's mind. Unfriendly and unpleasant atmosphere at best. While their selection of Oregon Pinot's is certainly stellar, we will not be returning to this place. The service was very mediocre, and the bartenders (owners) were shockingly unprofessional. Why do I say the service was mediocre??? First, we walked in a took a seat at the bar, and although there was a bartender within 5 feet of us and the place was nearly empty, it took about 3 minutes for us to get any kind of acknowledgment. The bartenders were too busy having conversation with some regulars to even say hello to us. After that the service didn't improve significantly. The bartender did help find some Pinot's I'd like, but she didn't seem to have very much knowledge about the wineries and admitted that she hadn't been to many of them. I feel like, considering their prices, I deserve some knowledge with my wine. Anyway... Why do I say the bartenders(owners?) were unprofessional??? Well, the better question is how weren't they unprofessional. From literally every other word being an F-bomb; to having loud conversation about going to a strip club with a regular; to plenty of talk about eating p^ssy! The unprofessional-ism covered the gamete. I've been in a lot of dive bars and I've never heard the things I heard in this high priced wine bar. I'm far from a prude, and I was appalled. If you're from out of town and would like to experience Oregon wine while staying in the city you'd be much better off visiting Enso, Kir, or even Hip Chicks before going to this place. Better yet take a day (or half a day) and get out of the city to really experience Oregon wines! read more

At a recent visit, we were horrified to witness incredibly rude and irresponsible treatment by what appeared to be the manager to an older man sitting at the bar. He had had a little too much, so she very loudly announced she was cutting him off. He then stood to leave, stumbled a bit, fell, and hit his head. He was on the floor so many patrons rushed to help and when the bartender asked the mgr what to do, she said, "I don't care. I just want him out of here." The bartender said she didn't think they could do that and a patron walked over to say they had called paramedics. The mgr then started asking the bartender who served him and how much he'd had (3 glasses of wine); and went on to complain that server was clearly too nice. Her behavior was inexcusable and we felt sick to our stomachs after witnessing it. We will never go back and are disappointed to have spent the money we did while there. read more

I love good wine and I love a good time. I wanted to love this place. Really. And I almost had myself talked into it, but the whole time we were at OWOB we couldn't shake the feeling that we were unwanted intruders at a private party. Maybe it was just the night we were there, but the place seemed full of the owners' friends and the owners seemed overly occupied with them - to the point of ignoring others. How do I know this? We were referred to as "paying customers." One of the owners finally broke herself away from a conversation with her friends to "talk to the paying customers." Except that she didn't. Talk, I mean. She basically said, "what'll you have?" and that was it for the evening. Pretty much the only words spoken to us. We ordered one basic ($10) and one premium ($16) flight of Oregon Pinot Noirs so we could each taste 6 different wines. We tried to order bread, but they had run out - we were offered complimentary crackers, which was fine. Within the flights there were a couple of really nice wines. I was thinking about ordering a glass of my favorite (the Ayoub, $18) but as we continued to be ignored I lost my desire to spend any more money at this place. No one ever came to see how we liked the wines, if we had any questions or, hell, to see if we wanted to order anything else. My husband had to track down one of the owners to pay the bill (I get the feeling that we could've walked out without paying and no one would've noticed...so if this is your style, maybe sit by the door on a busy evening). While my husband was paying one owner, the other came and snatched the glasses off the table in front of me without a single word. No "thanks for coming by" or "hope you enjoyed the wine" or "have a good night." Nothing. Total BS. read more

This is a wine bar that specializes in Oregon wines. We stopped in after some serious shopping for a few glasses. One very annoying thing: the staff would turn up the music, then turn it down. At times it would be too loud to talk to your table mates. Other times it was perfect. It was almost as if the staff heard a song they liked and would turn it up. Very odd and annoying. The wines are overpriced per glass. At that, they don't carry any of the good Oregon wines. More of the off-the-wall brands. I had the sparkling wine flight. One out of the four was decent. We just had a sub par experience at your tasting bar, Oregon Wines on Broadway. Here are our recommendations for improvement: - Have available tasting sheets. We were told to go online. When we did, no tasting sheets existed online. We would have been interested in becoming club members but didn't receive any information, nor do we feel we would've been supported as club members. - We were interested in multiple flights and therefore ordered small plates. We were extremely disappointed in the quality of the small plates. For example, our pate was an end piece full of inedible fat and accomplices by 8 raisins. We were not attended too. I just looked at all of the yelp reviews AFTER gong here and am surprised by the one-stars. My wife and I are in town for the night and Emily was super helpful. Not only did she give us a ton of background on all of the wines we tried, but she gave us hand-drawn maps of where to eat tomorrow, which restaurants to visit tonight for dinner, and was extremely friendly. If I said she didn't use the f-word then everyone would accuse me of being a friend-of-the-owner, or whatever - so, yes, that word was used. But let's be frank, it's 2012, Obama was just reelected, gay marriage is legal in some states, weed is legal in two states, and thanks to the constitution that all of the seemingly uptight people reviewing this bar probably voted for Romney to defend, SHE CAN SAY WHATEVER SHE LIKES! My wife and I went here a weekend afternoon, because the place looked nice and very promising. We took a tasting flight of wine with a plate of pate. They appeared to be out of bread from "Pearl Bakery", so instead we got crappy water crackers(!). The pate was grey-greenish and certainly past due, but when we finally got the tattooed hipster waitress' attention (she was really busy chatting it up with the other waitress) to point out that the pate was inedible, she shrugged and replied "I served this twice already today and no one else has complained." I was definitely not impressed with this place and will not be coming back. Upon walking in, we weren't greeted by anyone and awkwardly looked around the room deciding whether or not we should seat ourselves and where we should sit to be acknowledged. The one person working seemed engaged in a conversation with a group at the bar and we felt as if our mere presence was interrupting her. After we were (finally) greeted, we ordered 3 flights: the "Blondes Have More Fun" (a selection of whites), the Basic Pinot Noir, and "Where's the Beef" (non-Pinot Noir reds). Upon being served our flights, we received absolutely no description of the wines--not even their names (although the names and years were written beneath the glasses) . Our server put them in front of us like she were in a hurry and proceeded to chat with her friends. On top of that, the conversation they were all having was very vulgar, unprofessional and distracting. Overall, the wine was ok but the service (or lack thereof) overrode the experience. Quite frankly, a Trader Joes employee recently told me more about wine than this place. read more

I am a regular at this place so take what I say with a grain of salt. I give OWOB 5 stars for these reasons #1 - 20 + open bottles of Oregon Pinot Noir available for tasting. No other place in Oregon matches this. If you want to try Oregon Pinot and don't have time for tastings in the Valley, this is as good as it gets. #2 - Riedel Oregon Pinot Bowls for Glass Pours - They get the glass right! #3 - Probably the best place to go in Portland for Champagne. Great selection and amazing Champagne Friday tastings - Ambonnay comes in 2nd #4 - Down to earth service. If you are a pretentious NY/SF wine snob you probably won't like this place. However, if you are friendly and open minded you should have a great time. Also, if you are horrified every time you hear the word "cock", you should probably skip this place. #5 - Low Markups/No In store corkage. I had a somewhat mixed experience. The atmosphere was fun and relaxed, and we had the opportunity to sample some really great wines. We sat outside, and my boyfriend played the role of bartender, going back and forth selecting us samplers and several glasses of wine from the bar. He mentioned how much fun the bartenders were, and how they did a great job of selecting and offering different types of wine. We decided to transition inside and sat at the bar. We met some interesting people are were able to join in the banter with the bartenders. All in all, it was a fun time. Then I began to notice that the bartender really wasn't that friendly or helpful at all. She would just say "try this one" and give it to us without any explanation. We asked her about recommendations for places to eat, and she recommended the two most expensive options in the area. We asked her again for other, more average priced places, and all she did was repeat her first two recommendations: "...as I said, I'd recommend x and x." Thanks a lot. After a while, it was apparent my boyfriend was getting a little drunk. I jokingly called the bartender a pusher. In retrospect, I was absolutely correct. Apparently she thought we were made of money and was giving us samples (and subsequently glasses) of the most expensive bottles of wine under the pretense of being helpful. We ended up with a bill of $140 (before tip) for 2 tasting flights and 6 glasses of wine. So a word of caution, by all means, go there and have fun and enjoy the great wine and entertaining bartenders, but don't forget that bartenders are salespeople, and not your friends. read more

I tried out this place over the weekend while visiting Portland. It got great reviews from fellow Yelpers so I thought I'd check it out. My husband and I sat at the bar and I ordered the premium flight. At $16 for 3 tastings of pinot noir, I thought it was pretty steep, but figured Oregon is known for their pinot's and I'd give it a go. The gal behind the counter puts the glasses in front of me and doesn't tell me a thing about the wines, except "I recommend drinking them from left to right." Then here's where it goes really south. The gal who served me is having a LOUD, conversation with her friends sitting at the end of the bar, and is dropping f bombs. Really?!? She continues to be obnoxious having her own private party with her friends. She's sharing a story about a friend who had sex in a dirty public restroom WHILE she's ringing up a customer who came in to purchase a bottle of wine. I was watching the woman who was getting rung up and she looked uncomfortable and not amused. Now, I am by no means a prude or a person who doesn't curse, but I am a huge believer in professionalism and good customer service. I work in retail and could never imagine acting in such a disgraceful way where I work and to paying customers. I couldn't drink my wine (which wasn't even that great) fast enough to get out of there. Ugh. Maybe she was just drunk and having herself a good time, but no thanks, not for me. "I don't trust people who don't drink" what a wonderful line. I nearly died of laughter on the inside...however...I had to keep somewhat of a composure as I have found loud bursts of laughter are not exactly the best way to romance my wonderful wife. We went here two nights in a row, the place closes at eight and we were able to stick around with the locals while everyone wrapped up shop. They have one of the best selections of sought after oregon wines...in oregon...hands down. I will tell you this, it is nothing like any wine bar I have ever been to...really they should call it "Friends on Broadway"...and they happen to serve wine. The music selection was comically enjoyable...from the waylen jennings to the Notorious BIG. Honestly, don't go here if you are looking for somebody pretentiously trying to pretend your out of town 10 dollar flight of wine actually means something. Go here if you want to have a good time listening to some fantastic music and don't mind walking over to the bar or grabbing a bottle of wine and saying what you want. They all know their wines and I dropped a couple of hundred dollars in the course of two days at this place and they treated me exactly like everybody else...and it was quite an enjoyable experience to just be treated like a local after we had spent so much time being treated like we were from out of town. So here are your take aways for those who are reading yelp: 1) Incredible wine selection 2) Put on your ear muffs if you have sensitive ears...trust me the bartenders are the next best thing to the stand up commedy of Lisa Lampanelli...and just as crass at times 3) The wines are not marked up, so frankly neither is the service, grab a bottle hand it to them and I promise you they will crack it open in record time and bring it over 4) They really honestly do care about their friends who are sitting at the bar...the two times I came in about 8 of the10 same people were there...that was impressive.
