Yes, I'm talking about natural wine. This could mean organic, biodynamic, no sulfites, no filtering - but it's unique to each bottle and producer to create the most enjoyable wine. The selection is small as are their quantities due to the extra unique wines carried from generally smaller producers. These types of wines are a bit pricier (not always!) than their conventional counterparts, but offer a completely different wine drinking experience. Stopped in to purchase wine. Stood there for ten minutes as the store associate had a social conversation showing his friend around the shop. No acknowledgement that we were even standing there waiting to ask a question. We then walked out and still nothing. Awful customer service especially given the price point of their wines. read more

Such a cute shop! I found this place through foodiesnitch, and was so grateful to find an entire shop of curated natural wines. The online pickup system was super simple, and I was able to pickup my christmas wine next day! I picked an orange varietal, and loved it. Lovely selection, and super easy. My only complain was a grumpy man on the phone by the door who told us it was a bit full inside when we arrived, there were literally 2 people inside at that time. But again, grinchy patrons aren't Ardor's fault! Go support this lovely shop! read more

I've really been enjoying diving into the world of natural wines lately, and during this pandemic, began a habit of ordering online from wine retailers, from LA to NY. Given that the shipping gets a bit expensive, and you can only tell so much from an online description, I figured it would be nice to peruse a curated selection to support local. I decided to give Ardor a try since a lot of my friends on social media seem to have supported it since it opened, and they seemed to have a good reputation. Sadly, I will not be returning due to the very awkward, unkind and unprofessional customer service. They have been open for retail, limiting 2 customers in the very small shotgun shop at a time, and I dropped by yesterday to pick up some orange wine. I walk in, the lights are off (due to a neighborhood outage), the man behind the counter is on the phone, so I start trying to familiarize myself with what's available. When he gets off the phone, he asks "can I help you with anything?" and I ask what orange wines he would recommend. And he says, "well, what do you like?" Apparently the bottle I already grabbed from the fridge was already in line with my tastes, but he didn't even proceed to suggest any recommendations. I asked if there were any additional orange wines in the $20-30 range he could recommend, and all he did was vaguely point to the very obvious bottles with written-on prices as we were at a distance. Absolutely no guidance or shared knowledge of any of the wines at all. I am no wine expert, and honestly feel intimidated by wine snobs, but give me SOMETHING here. I can't imagine how these people even sell wine when they don't even make a connection with their customer. I was blown away and just left to my own devices to make a judgment call on what to buy. When I "improperly" placed the wine bottles on the wrong side of the checkout counter, he just pointed to where they needed to go by the card reader and said "no". No signs that clearly indicate their system of how they are running their operation during the pandemic, because I would happily oblige, but I just felt like I was a huge bother and inconvenience getting it all wrong. All he said was "our power is out, that's why it's dark in here". I left dumbfounded and told myself I would never be returning. May I highly suggest supporting Dame (Portland), Mom & Pop Wine Shop (Portland), Helen's Wines (based in LA, can order online), and Primal Wine (order online) instead of supporting this store. All have enthusiasm for what they do, and they infectiously share it with their customers. It isn't that hard to do. read more

This was a really random stop for me. I was on my way to grab some food to eat after drinking champagne and stumbled on Ardor. This place is set up as more of a wine shop and is quite small but if you have the chance sit at the make-shift bar and have a glass (or two in my case). I am a big fan of Natural Wines but, if you've never had them before know that the taste can be pretty different. I would suggest letting the person behind the bar know what types of wines you enjoy and maybe have a glass before purchasing a bottle. I really enjoyed my time at this spot and the advice from the owner to hit up Kachka for dinner. I look forward to visiting this spot again on my next visit to Portland. read more

The bad reviews this place has received are pretty sad/funny to me. Mostly makes me feel sad for the people that wrote them, yet funny that I get to enjoy this place without assholes shopping here. My experiences have been nothing short of fantastic. I used to sell wine and know a little bit about wine, but in no way am I an expert. I have always have looked to the owner Victor for recommendations and he has always delivered, from champagne to celebrate, to a nice reasonably priced white to sip on on the patio. Victor has always been nothing short of engaged, friendly, knowledgeable, and very happy to help me pick out wine. He has such a fun and expansive selection that is incredibly well curated and thought out for a small shop. SPOILER ALERT None of you're every day crap wine will be found here that you see in so many "wine" stores. If you're looking for that perfect $7-12 bottle look elsewhere, but if you care about wine, love supporting your local businesses that are truly invested in the industry that they are a part of, then go here. To the reviewer bitching about price for the neighborhood... you pay for what you get, sucks that retro Jordan's cost so much, but you don't see me wearing crocs and bitching about Jordan's, Fred Meyer's isn't too far away for what you're looking for wine wise. To the reviewer bitching about customer service... the customer is not always right, sometimes they suck and will be responded to with the same energy they spew, welcome to Portland, please find your chill and relax and enjoy life a little bit. To the reviewer snitching about Covid and distancing... perhaps that group are all roommates and have always been exposed to each other, but way to be petty and reductionist in your "I spy" review. Ran into the owner Victor on my first visit and we chatted at length about natural wines with a focus on skin contact whites from southern Italy. He joined us for a glass outside and we appreciated the warm hospitality and shared passion for natty wines. Highly recommended! read more

Everyone needs an amazing hole in the wall wine shop with the absolute best selection of wines in the city...and possibly state. Ardor is hidden inside Shop Boswell and the second you walk in you know you've found something special. The owners have curated an incredible list of natural wines from around the world and around the country. They are exceedingly knowledgeable yet down to earth. Wines range in price but I have never had one that I didn't love. We live 3 hours south of Portland and every time we are in town a stop in at ardor is a must. Go learn about natural wine! read more

Ardor is the place to be for natural wines in Portland. Ryan the owner always takes good care of me when I'm there, and always has a story to go with every wine on the list. Try the orange wine! I just signed up for their wine club which I'm excited about as well. They don't really have a food menu but they let you bring in food from next door (I always prefer to eat something when I drink). It's a pop up in the Red E coffee shop, so check their hours before stopping by. Also make sure to sit at the bar-- the place is big and only run by one bartender at a time, so they may not see you. It's a bottle shop too so you can always pick some stuff out to take home. read more

Highly, HIGHLY, recommend. The phenomenal customer service and selection will ensure you leave with the best wine for any occasion. I love that everything in the store is produced naturally- no crazy chemicals or additives- and the quality is over-the-top. The price range is very reasonable, there were several options under $20. Stopped by recently, I wanted to like this place, but the price point for the neighborhood is too expensive. The guy at the bar was a little aloof, no one else was in there, and the music was way way too loud. Doesn't seem like they get much business. There's an arguably better and cheaper wine bar down the street. They do have good wine, but I won't be going back. This place would be better in the Pearl then on Killingsworth. read more
