I drove over an hour to get a curly service done. I was recommended products to take home and was 100% told they were travel size and would be able to take it with me on my trip. Ended up having to throw away unused product at tsa due to being misinformed by staff. Reached out for new products and Kamilah did not care that i am out over $150 of product due to her staff misinforming me. The response i got was that there would be a 25% off sale coming up in the future. Super disappointed. read more

After my previous stylist canceled on me day-of, I was frantically searching the area for anyone who could see me in less than two weeks (for a big trip). Everyone was booked at least a month out, but Janelle emailed me back the same day and was able to get me in the following week with LaMani for a color correction and cut. LaMani was so knowledgeable and friendly, and she really took the time to assess my hair and see what it needed. She even tested dyes and products on individual curls to see what would work best. She then color corrected, washed, styled and cut my hair. My hair was previously purple, and the color had faded out to blue, green and even white in some areas. It was a mess. LaMani got it all back to my natural color and made sure I was totally satisfied with the end result. I cannot say enough good things about Original Moxie and their team! read more

I'd have to say my daughter and I are pretty disappointed with our experience with Original Moxie. My teenage daughter did a ton of research looking through dozens of salons in Michigan trying to find what she hoped would be the best, most educational and wonderful experience for her very first professional curly hair cut(it was her birthday gift along with some products that they would recommend). She finally selected Original Moxie thinking it would be all of the things I mentioned. We knew there was a time restriction but when we did our Zoom meeting with her stylist (Eboni, very nice and calm and patient) she even mentioned that my daughter would be her last appointment that day and she would be able to do whatever was necessary to make sure she was happy at the end. My daughter FaceTimed me at the end to show me and talk to me and mentioned she was going back in and was going to ask for her bangs to be cut (She did mention it at the beginning). Apparently, it was to late and she couldn't do the bangs because she already put the product in. My daughter left the salon with wet hair (she cut it wet) and said she reached her time limit with her. I checked emails and nothing mentioned that woman can not have their hair dried in the salon. How do you do a first time curly! cut and send them out with wet hair There is literally no possible way to see your cut/style with it wet. At first they said she could come back and pay a small fee for the bang cut but when I spoke to Eboni she said it wouldn't cost. Then, we were traveling and her $25 bottle of hold up serum popped open and spilled more 3/4 of it. I emailed them hoping they might do something...anything to help her out and they just said they were sorry but unless it was a defect in the bottle there was nothing they could do. The whole thing just wasn't worth the hour long drive and the more than $200 for everything. Just important for you to know Incase your checking things out. Maybe under "normal" times it would have been different but right now isn't a good time for a first time visit. read more

I added that I wasn't comfortable leaving with wet hair because I needed to know how the cut actually looked dry and I also explained that it was 20 degrees outside and that I wasn't comfortable going out in freezing temps with wet hair. Even with my objections, the best she could offer me was sticking me under the "automatic dryer" which made my hair come out crunchy and frizzy from all the products that hadn't been worked through my hair as they would've been with a manual hair-dry. I've been going to salons in A2 and Ypsi for years and have never been treated this way. I had to go home and style my own hair which was exhausting for me with my disability. Lamani gave me the full treatment and brought life back into my hair. She also showed me the best products for my hair type and showed me how to apply them. I am so bummed that I had such a different experience at my second appointment at Original Moxie. I wasn't able to book with Carmen - who was great - so I booked with Emma. This salon has a nearly hysterical lateness / cancellation policy AND they require you to give a credit card up front. So if you are late or don't show up, they can still charge you. You get SEVERAL aggressive push notifications reminding you of your appointment (helpful) and their policy of cancelling appointments if you are late, as well as still charging you. So when I waited 15 minutes for Emma to finish up her previous customer, I was annoyed because punctuality matters on both sides. When I finally got in her chair, I showed her some photos of haircuts I liked and what I was hoping to do with my hair. She kept saying things like, "That's shorter than your hair is now" and "I bet her hair looked really bad 10 minutes after this photo was taken." No shit, Emma. I'm here for a hair cut not freaking extensions. She was so weird and unhelpful. I tried to describe what I thought might make my hair look better but she just lectured me about how dumb the photos were. I guess I picked bad ones. After about 5 minutes of that, I just didn't trust her to cut my dumb hair. I told her we weren't a good match and got the hell out of there. Nestled in Depot town is this small but fierce salon. There are only two chairs and one sink and dryer. It's intimate and as a client you quickly get to know folks. Y'all I came in looking for a quick update to my short cut and I walked away with an education about my hair. The stylist, Carmen, rescued my hair with some much needed hydration and wavy hair love. Firstly, I didn't realize my hair had that much natural wave to it!!! Even the next day, it feels so silky and bouncy. The salon, also, emailed my hair assessment! There are the many perks that you get at other salons like hot tea and a suite of specialty products. However, the salon products are all-natural. This was the first time a salon didn't try to blow out my hair straight nor did I walk out with a weird catalogue cut which happens more often than not. Carmen and Briana are brilliant and make this salon experience relaxing and accessible. Can't recommend them enough! I'm definitely taking my sister next time. read more

I just went and got my hair cut yesterday at another salon. They were appalled by the uneven cut of my hair that was last cut by original moxie. Because of the uneven cut I had to get more length cut off than needed to make it even. Beware of this establishment. Just because they "specialize" or are "specialists" means nothing. I cannot say enough great things about their products! I just recently discovered them, and never would've had they not offered their mini trial 5 oz sizes on their site, e.g. I ordered six different mini sizes, which are only around $5 bucks each. I could never stomach the idea of paying full price for a non returnable product in a standard size, only to throw it away after discovering it doesn't work for me. I've fallen in love with their "hair serum Hold Up" and their "Lux Locks Styling Cream," which is saying a lot cuz I'm not usually a fan of creams, preferring pomades and waxes. But the combined action of these products in activating curls and defining, adding unbelievable shine, I'm a convert to the point I just ponied up full price for both of these products in their maximum and medium sizes. I loooove their scents, seriously every single mini trial product I've tried doesn't have that cloying perfumey sent I detest. Instead, every product smells fresh and fruity, cucumber, light and natural, something I actually want to slather my hair in. I meticulously read the ingredients and it's all natural, in many cases organic, not fake stuff, not artificially scented, nothing I can't pronounce. If I could give this company and their products 6 stars on Yelp, I would. Just the thoughtfulness of the concept: they're offering a mini version for so little money, why don't more companies do this? She will even show you how to best use her products, which tells you how much she believes in customer service and satisfaction. I was even more excited once OM announced they were opening a salon. I've gotten two dry cuts from Carmen so far and I've gotten soooo many compliments! I have struggled with my wavy hair for decades--mostly by either heat drying it straight or by pulling it back in a bun bc nothing ever looked good and ive tried a million products. The moxie products were recommended by multiple friends but after reading their website i decided to book an appointment for a cut and consultation. I got an appointment within a couple days. Emma was my stylist. She was thorough in assessing my hair type and cutting/shaping it to coax the curls as well as helping me learn how to care for my hair to protect and encourage the curls and help me get the right products. Her style lasted a couple days and i was easily able to duplicate it at home following her instructions and now i finally have the wash and go low maintenance hair ive always hoped for! I have gotten a lot of compliments as well and recommended emma and the moxie products many times this week. $65 for the cut and consultation way worth it.
