Simple, good value and delicious. The fish wasn't greasy, the chips were perfectly crisp and the home made tartare sauce was a bonus. There was a queue (always a good sign) but we didn't have to wait long for our dinner. Highly recommended. read more

There was a time back when I was much younger when I used to visit this place, by a packet of fish and chips, and then sit down on Warland Reversed and munch a way, all the while fighting off the seagulls that would always venture to attempt to get in on the action (and the only time we did feed them we pretty much lived to regret it, and indeed learnt a valuable lesson). Anyway, when I recently came down to Victor to relive the old days I decided to pay this place a visit. Basically it is purely a fish and chip shop, and even has a nice sit down area, though that is not really the purpose of coming here (take away is much better). The chips aren't all that bad, and the dim sims are pretty nice as well. However, one should be aware that this place does get pretty busy during the high seasons. read more

After a few mediocre experiences here, I find myself left with two questions - one, why do I continue to return to the 'Original' Victor Harbor Fish Shop, and two, quite how have they earned the title of South Australia's 'best' fish and chip shop?? As for question one, I keep going back because the alternatives for fish and chips at Victor are thinning out unfortunately - the Southern Fleurieu Fish shop has closed down, Cafe 61 is gone, as is Stingray's that came after it, the other competing fish and chip shop on the main street is closed, either for renovations or a new store altogether, and it's just that little bit too far to go up to Port Elliott on a whim for fish and chips. So I'm guessing it's convenience. The fish is actually fairly good, if expensive for the small servings supplied - and the chips are hand cut which is a bonus. On my most recent visit, however, not only were the staff their usual abrupt and slightly surly selves, they also had an extremely limited range available - and would only cook chips in batches of $5 worth. No seafood sticks, potato cakes, burgers, hot dogs, calamari, yiros, prawns, fish cakes - or even a selection of fish, it was battered butterfish and $5 worth of chips, or nothing. Signs proclaiming all items would be available on the 9th onwards (this was on the 3rd January) did little to appease my kids who ended up only eating chips. To add to the fun, they'd chosen to close the dining room too, which send us out wandering down to the esplanade to try and find somewhere to eat out of the sun. Not happy, Jan. Previous encounters have included a selection of seafood (prawn cutlets, calamari, fish sticks) that I think must have gone in the oil a little before it was ready, for they were absolutely dripping oil when we got them, and a catering fiasco that we had to cancel and source elsewhere as they were unwilling to take an order of around $150 for a birthday party because it would have been their 'busy' time - of course, if I'd wandered in off the street and ordered $150 worth of fish and chips that would have been fine. All in all, as the stars say, I've experienced better. If you're happy to put up with an attitude that you're putting them out by buying food from them, and are craving fish and chips, you will usually get reasonable food here. I think I'll vote with my feet and take the trip to one of the alternatives down the road in future though. Note there is NO Eftpos here - painful if you've queued for nigh on an hour on a saturday lunchtime. I've said yes for Waiter service - as long as you use the dining room which is also more expensive than the take away - but you do get a seat inside and a plate, so it equals out some. This place was once amazing, but the quality is disgraceful now. They appear to have gotten cheaper oil to cut costs, which never works.

This is the original and best fish and chipperie in Victor Harbor. If you order takeaway you enter a barred in line where you watch the masters at work. The chips look and taste fresh and crunchy and the fish was golden and deep fried right in front of you. There are two separate menus for those who eat in and take away. If you go for the takeaway option you're still able to eat at the tables outside or grab them and take them to the lovely beach. If you're looking for high quality fish and chips you can't go past the original. read more

I had the worst hamburger that I have ever had. This is the most expensive fish shop I have been in. I didn't want much and the menu confirmed my lack of appetite. I was there with friends traveling from Sydney. I live in the area and was ashamed to take them to this discussing place. Hamburger prices were displayed on the board $10 - the lot. Whatever that mean???? $9 - egg & onions $8 - hamburger - this is what I chose - What I got - a bun dry not toasted no sauce no salad, Oh yes I got a meat paddy, it was the worst service I have ever experienced. I wish I had taken a photo. I can't express how bad it was. I will never go back to this place and encourage you if you want to eat go to the many other places in Victor Harbor. read more

I was very happy with my fish (butterfish) and chips. No complaints on service. We were surprised at how nice the inside of the shop/restaurant is, but as we got take-away, it didn't really matter to us. Except that it was a hot day and the air conditioning was really pleasant. Also, a previous reviewer noted that there was no eftpos. They now accept cards! Yay!! Anyhow, long story made short, we will definitely be back. read more

Once upon a time, the "Original Victor Harbor Fish Shop" on Ocean Street was in fact run by a delightful elderly couple who were cheerful, generous, and above all - who REALLY cared about customer service and knew how to cook fish and chips to perfection. This would, it is felt locally, account for the "Best Fish & Chip Shop in South Australia" titles which adorn the front door of the business to this very day. I wish that I had written this review much closer to the time I last had the misfortune to stumble into the premises (which was a few years ago while I was looking after my parents' house in Victor Harbor) however, the shock and trauma of my treatment whilst there made me start to doubt my own judgement. It was only upon telling a friend about it this past weekend to learn that HE recently had a very similar Customer Service "experience" that I felt I should probably share what had happened when last I was there... Now, there's always been a red line on the floor. Initially, it was to give the hordes of hungry fish & chip buyers a guide as to where to queue. The freezing, blustery night I last braved the threshold (not knowing about the change of Management) I discovered that the man who has taken over is apparently rather fond of loudly ordering the customer/s to "Stand behind the red line with your toes touching it!". I was also yelled at for daring to walk towards the refrigerator to pick up the drink for which I had already paid, in addition to being told at similar volume that "The chairs are ALL RESERVED! You can NOT sit there" when my legs started to ache after standing on the red line for the best part of 15 minutes (I'd had a long day & had only ordered hot chips and a soft drink). When I (not unreasonably) pointed out that there were no other customers present, nor any Reserved signs on the tables in question - the atmosphere became frostier still. I was then treated to the 'highlight' of the evening: the new proprietors decided to duck around the back and embark on a lengthy domestic argument which I am fairly sure was in Dutch. As I was taught German for several years at School, I was unfortunately able to understand at least 2/3rds of what was being said. ! Meanwhile, the poor girl who worked out the front felt obliged to apologise repeatedly. Clearly, I could go on, but to add insult to injury - when I finally was given the overpriced chips, they were both slightly burnt on the outside and under-cooked and greasy on the inside. Quite the accomplishment I believe! At least my drink was nice and cold, no doubt due to the fact that I wasn't "allowed" to take/open it until I had left the premises as I wasn't paying a surcharge to sit at one of their depressing tables. Actually, I'm tempted to give the place 2 Stars for comic value, even though it would be far more fitting for them to have renamed it the "Arbeit Macht Frei" Fish & Chip Shop. read more
