This is basically your typical beachside kiosk, which means that you mainly get fish and chips here. Like, they aren't bad, and neither are the prices, and they do have an indoor area where you can sit. However, it turns out that it isn't one of the greatest fish and chip restaurants around, probably because it is basically a beachside cafe. We arrived at the Flying Fish on a very cold yet sunny winters day. The view is just amazing as you arrive, feels like you have just discovered something or found a special secret. You have a few different options for dining here including the restaurant, the cafe or just simply take away. We dined in the cafe also known as the fish and chip shop. The menu is small but enough to satisfy many tastes. I had the signature dish 'coopers beer battered fish with chips" the fish and the batter were both scrumptious and the serving of fish was very generous. The chips were a little on the soggy side and just lacked some love - they didn't have salt. I did ask this when ordering and was told they don't have chicken salt but do salt the fish. Do not choose the signature dish if you are counting the calories or minimising your fats and oils intake! As for drinks they do provide water, soft drinks, beer and cider - I did not however see any wine. They also have a selection of cakes and biscuits if you feel like something sweet later with a cup of coffee or tea. Do yourself a favor and sit outside with the seagulls and fresh breeze of the ocean. Be mindful that they seating outside is not part of the cafe its just a public area. The lovely waitress came out to double check as we did not know. AND they have home made tartare sauce! It will cost you $1 a tub - well worth it or you can just have the complementary master-food sachets. A pair it also outside on a grassed area making it a good location for kids. Prices are a little on the costly side for fish chips but the view and scenery makes up for it. I will definitely go back, maybe summer next time so i can go for a swim later on! read more

Great little restaurant, best view and prettiest bay in SA. The food isn't like many city restaurants but compared to other places on the coast it's pretty good. Friendly service and very fast. The kids can play in the beach while you eat! read more

The Flying Fish - what a tops location in beautiful horseshoe bay. It was super stormy on the evening our little posse had booked a table to celebrate a birthday among us. The rain didn't sully the atmosphere of the liberally windowed venue, instead it added to the romance and made us even happier to be inside together enjoying good food, drink and company. The rap was promising, the place seemed to have a good reputation and I do enjoy linen napkins. The service was inexperienced but well meaning and we are pretty easy going so we went up to the counter a couple of times to order drinks. Most of the table ordered starters and the tasting plate was a hit with a generous amount of panfried chorizo sausage amongst other tastinesses. The scallops looked lovely but were a little overdone. I quite fancied light protein and vegetables which seemed a tall order, as their menu is quite carb rich for a seafood joint. Why did I not keep this word in mind? SEAFOOD. I made a rooky mistake and chose the smoked chicken galette with roast field mushrooms, baby spinach and fetta and beetroot relish, arrrgh. Order fail. The dish was not seasoned at all, but I remained optimistic, knowing that this could be somewhat amended. As I waited, I noticed the 'field mushrooms' were clearly button and still the seasoning did not come. I waited until quite some minutes had passed, then got up and requested salt and pepper again. By the time it came I picked at a cold, although now, not entirely tasteless meal. Bill sagas ensued, with the staff forgetting to charge properly for a couple of bottles of bubbles, but all was worked out after 10 minutes or so of confusion. It's a nice cafe and restaurant pretty much right on the beach in horseshoe bay. Always enjoy a meal or a coffee there with friends. Food is generally good. cafe side is more casual and fast food, but same restaurant quality, different price. Don't feed the seagulls, they will go crazy. The Flying Fish operates on two levels, both as a beach side fish and chippery as well as an upscale beach side restaurant. Outside, the semi detached fish and chip shop is always busy. Chips are sold, along with deep fried fish, prawns, scallops or squid, in large white paper cones. Also on offer are ice creams, cold drinks and coffee. Orders are placed at the counter to be picked up from the window to the side. There are pick-nick style tables on a patio out the front overlooking the ocean. The food is really good, and the staff friendly, but be prepared to line up to order and fight for a table. The Restaurant, within a a stylish glass enclosed building also overlooking the ocean, is trendy and a little bit pricey. It is also quite popular, so bookings are recommended. The menu has a focus upon seafood, however, steak, chicken and a duck dish are also available. There is an extensive wine list and a good range of beers on offer. In the summer, I use to go down to good old Horseshoe Bay on a regular basis whilst on holiday and enjoy the soothing ocean. It is a great tourist spot and the beach is kept rather clean. Sights from the top of the hill are amazing and you really get a good view if you are willing to walk up the steep walkway for a bit. The Flying Fish is the only cafe at Encounter Bay and I find it to be a great hybrid between a nice beachside cafe and a takeaway store. I generally love their chips and get a small cone whilst feeling the sand between my toes or relaxing on the grass lawn. They are absolutely divine and perfect for seaside ships, however a tad on the costly side of things. That is why I don't have them every time i go down. I haven't actually had a meal there but they do fish and chips and a lot of seafood, they have a rather nice lunch and dinner menu and small dining area that would be a possible great experience for a nice summer's eve when the temperature and the weather is just right. The Cornetto ice-creams are probably another reason why I like the Flying Fish. There is a small cabinet of them and on a hot summer's day, they can be a real winner. Overall, the Flying Fish is a great restaurant and takeaway and due to pleasant experiences in the past, I would definitely try having a more proper meal there rather than a summer snack. read more

Flying Fish is great at any time of the year. It sits 'almost' on the beach in a gorgeous little bay, with outdoor seating, lawns and trees next to it, and great walks to the left and the right. It's postcard perfect on a sunny day. The car park fills quickly but there's street parking a short walk away. You don't have to visit the Café to enjoy the bay but it's hard to ignore when you see others enjoying their chips. A beer, a cone of chips and some calamari, with a great view and sea breeze, enjoying life...the only thing that can spoil that is screaming children but I'm now able to shut most of that out and 'pretend' it's quiet. I have to say I'm not a huge fan of the 'cornetto' they serve their chips in because invariably it always falls over and I lose my chips. That aside they are always well cooked and delicious, fish and calamari are great, and being licenced it gives you some drinking options. Fish 'n' chips does not get any better than this. read more

The Flying Fish Cafe & restaurant, is situated at Horse Shoe Bay, over looking the sea, next door to the local Bowling Club. We had a delightful brunch, relaxing, enjoying the sound of breakers on the beach, with good views. Being beside the sea, we chose a fish plate, which was excellent, finishing with a very smooth Monjava coffee. Faultlessly prepared and presented, along with good friendly service. We had our brunch in the cafe area, would have to be the best fish & Fries we have enjoyed at a seaside Cafe. The restaurant which flows through the Cafe along the front with great sea views looked very inviting, with a special lunch menu. We were so impressed with the cafe brunch we will return to the restaurant which has great reviews. News papers, free WiFi, which made this a very enjoyable stop over. read more

The restaurant serves great fresh fish that's crispy on the out side soft and melt in the mouth on the out. The chips when done fresh are simply brilliant but if there not fresh they can be slightly soggy. The restaurant has the stunning setting of horseshoe bay, this gives it a relaxed atmosphere and the friendly service reflected this. The price was also very reasonable for the serving you got. Overall a great experience and if done fresh a close contend or for the states best!! read more
