The picnic areas are also a resting place for the barn swallows so be sure to inspect your table and seat first! There is a sign claiming free wifi, but there was none.

It's a great place to really stretch your legs and admire a place that was a huge importance in the history of settlers travel west in the hopes of having the American dream of having something greater than what they left behind. Independence Rock is climbable but it's definitely a climb at your own risk no signs are posted but my husband didn't have a problem going to the top. Btw it's Free!!! Remember to close the gate.

There were many other cars and trucks stuck here overnight as well. The rest stop manager, Ethan, was a life saver. He made sure that everyone had food and warmth and continuously salted and shoveled the walkways. He kept us updated on the storm and the conditions of the road and kept spirits high!! The Lusk Rest Area is pretty old school, but they do have working toilets! It is definitely not a…read morenew building, but it works. There's some really nice walking paths around the rest area as well as dog friendly spots. The area has a few historical plaques that you can read and learn from. Overall it is a kept up rest spot and clean. I wish it would smell better. Additionally, I've been to some rest stops that offer free WiFi and have vending machines. There's no vending machines here, but maybe someday they'll get some! To use the restroom in Lusk, you either have to stop here or the Sinclair that is more in town. This place is never crowded, so my family and I always stop here!

Plenty of parking for 18-wheelers, cars, and campers, with a large restroom area (with family restroom). Yet the surprise of this fairly remote rest stop in the middle of BFE, Wyoming was the gas station across the street yet relatively in the same area as the rest stop. Why go anywhere else for gas or eats? Cheyenne is 45 miles away, followed by Denver at 145 miles. By comparison, Casper is 133 miles in the opposite direction, followed by Sheridan, WY and Billings, MT (Billings is 333 miles away). There really isn't too many good rest stop areas to take a breather in- possibly the larger one in Sheridan, which has hotels and gas stations around it. Traveling at night on this stretch of I-25 at night can be challenging. If you are tired and slightly fatigued when traveling either direction in between Cheyenne and Casper, bookmark this rest area. Well worth the stop.

My main food choice over the years has been the deep fried tacos. I happened to be there with Wyoming governor Mead and his son who recommended the tacos. Much to my dismay, they are no longer on the menu. "Amy doesn't cook here anymore," I was told. I since learned she cooks elsewhere. After the eclipse there was a steady flow of cars passing Howard's, I'll be back.

They've got plenty of ice most of the time both crushed and block, propane, and carry fishing tackle and even some boat products. Service can range from friendly to aloof to once in a while surly, but for the most part this is the only game in town if you need something and don't want to drive an hour up or down I-25 to get to it. Yes they carry beer but if you want that your best bet is to plan ahead and bring all you need with you. Basically it is what it is, an expanded C-store in the middle of nowhere next to a lake that you really should check out. Consider Howards asa base supply camp if you go exploring Glendo!

I used to travel often for my job and could not believe how good this place was. In the courtyard each morning at 7am, the owner or a representative would make omelet's, custom made to your order and they were prepared on an original covered chuck-wagon. Nice outdoor seating as well. Very relaxed place and a great stop if you find yourself needing a great place on your road-trip. We recommend the Best Western Pioneer in Lusk, Wyoming.
