The booking was simple enough though my information seemed to be collected several time and not recorded but that did not affect me. The office is busy but well run. My technician was super attentive and she was efficient at the same time. My ophthalmologist was just the same. I am due back as I could not have my pupils dilated had I had to go back to work and be operational. That is the only cloud in this very blue sky - having to wait another 3 weeks before being able to do this part of the exam and finalize my contact lenses prescription. I received my glasses prescription by email. I don't know if I love that or hate that I was not offered to have glasses done. A bit of an anticlimax as consequently I have contact lenses and glasses that do not match my now new prescription. read more

Entire staff at Orinda Optometry is great but I wanted to give Dr. Steinmann a shout out. His professionalism, kindness and patient care is above and beyond. Saw him yesterday for my annual check up - he's very thorough and explains all things very patiently. He referred me to a specialist right way for my condition and took the efforts to connect with them after hours and the next day as well. I got an appointment right away - and no anxious waiting time. Truly grateful for his dedication and exceptionalism. I feel great knowing that i'm in his care! What an amazing experience! I woke up today with a scratchy eye that was hurting and tearing quite a bit, so much so that I couldn't drive to see my regular ophthalmalogist 30 minutes away. I happened to have some old contacts to donate that I had been carrying around with me for a week, intending to drop them off at Orinda Optometry, so I decided to return them and ask if they could help me to make sure that I didn't have anything serious going on with my eye. I could not have had a better experience! The woman at the front desk was very kind and helpful and told me that if I was willing to wait, they could see me. I waited for just a bit, and Dr. Eng was willing to check me out--even though it was her lunch hour! She also was very kind and professional and thorough. When my family first moved to Orinda, I went to Dr. Stephanie Lee at Visual Entree Optometry. They closed sometime in between 2015 and 2016, and I went looking for another optometrist in the area. The great Yelp reviews eventually led me to the Orinda Optometry Group and I've had nothing but great experiences with the staff and optometrists here since. I've never had any issues scheduling an appointment, even a number of months in advance! Dr. Hale is very thorough and personable, and answers any/all questions. While the staff do offer to place contact and glasses orders at the end of my appointment, I've never felt pressured to order there. They have a great selection of glasses, but I prefer going to SEE in SF or San Jose for my frames. It's pretty easy to call and get your prescription for outside orders, and the office makes sure to send everything through a secure email. If you're looking for an optometrist in Orinda, this place is highly recommended! read more

Review #022 - 2017 I've never needed glasses or contacts in all my life even though most of my siblings do require one or the other. Until recently, I went to the DMV to renew my driver license and was required to pass a vision test. Much to my surprise, I did not pass! "How was that possible?" I thought to myself... Sadly, I was told that I needed a note from an optometrist saying that I don't need glasses or get prescription glasses/contacts before I could go back and get my driver license renewed before the end of February. So, I did my research and figured out which place accepted my vision plan and Orinda Optometry was on that list. Thank goodness they are located only two minutes away from my house. Before showing up to my appointment, I was sent an online link to fill out at home so I didn't have to spend a lot of time waiting to be seen. I just needed to verify and sign the print out that they provided upon my arrival. Dr. Hale was very professional and so are all of his staff members. He gave me an eye exam and told me that I had a very slight nearsightedness, but that I definitely DID NOT need glasses! He'll never know how happy he made me feel when I heard that statement. Although he told me that I didn't need glasses, I told him that I may consider getting glasses anyway since it would definitely help with my driving late at night. He was very honest and said that he has no problem with me spending my money even though I didn't need to. I sat down with the glasses specialist, Ronnie, and he told me that my price would come out to $370 after the insurance pays for their share. I was quite shocked being that it was so expensive since it was my first time getting glasses so I told him that I'd need to think it over, especially if I didn't actually "need" them. I'm glad that I came here because I did not feel pressured to make a purchase after spending about half an hour looking at different options. Dr. Hale has my trust should I ever need to make that purchase someday. read more

I was excited to try out this place based on some of the reviews, but was disappointed from the start. After two last-minute cancellations due to because the doctor deciding to take the day off, I should have known better than to come here. What kind of office has its doctors cancel TWICE on short notice?!! Due to my extremely busy schedule I had to drop everything to find another time. In addition, once I finally got an appointment that wasn't cancelled, I sat and waited in the office only to be shuffled around from room to room like cattle waiting to be seen by this busy doctor. The assistants were helpful and professional but after waiting in the office for over 1.5 hours to be seen by this unprofessional optometrist, I'd had enough. I should have read the signs when she cancelled on me twice and decided not come here. A routine check up took two cancelled appointments and 1.5 hours to be finally seen by this busy optometrist for prob about 10 mins max. DO NOT GO HERE unless you enjoy waiting to be seen by a "busy" doctor, being treated like cattle herded from room to room, and having to reschedule appointments due to the doctor's last minute vacations. This place is a complete joke and an insult to the field of optometry. In all my years of seeing optometrists, I've never been treated more poorly. read more

I have struggled with looking at a computer screen for over 20 years. It has been so bad recently, that my eye strain led to bouts of vertigo and spinning (spinning where you can't see anything, which then leads to vomiting). I have a number of diagnoses (among them, Meniere's disease), but my eyes have always felt like the part that's failing. I called Orinda Optometry at the end of two horrible weeks. The receptionist was incredibly empathetic and patient, carefully capturing all of my details to relay urgently to the doctor. I had to cancel an appointment with very little notice, because I got an attack of vertigo. Instead of being annoyed, they were patient, and Dr. Eng took the time to call me, to see if she could help via the phone. They then fit me in on very short notice, and in my appointment, Dr. Eng clearly was thinking broadly about my history and what the variables were (what she could play with to make things better). Dr. Eng gave me things I could try, free contact lenses to take home, the use of their office computer, so that I could "simulate" my work environment to test possible solutions. She also quickly referred me to UC Berkeley's School of Optometry, where they work with tough cases. Finally, I worked again with Nancy, who handles the frames. She suddenly had an insight: that polarized lenses in my sunglasses might not be doing me any good, because, while they have advantages, they also introduce visual distortions, to which I might be very sensitive. She gave me a pair of non-polarized sunglasses, I sat again in front of her computer, and my eyes felt SO MUCH BETTER. What I need is a tint, and a computer screen with no glare, but perhaps not any RX. It was like being given the antidote to a snake bite from which you have suffered for years and years. This place is a superb resource, both for everyday needs (my son wears glasses, too) and for extraordinary needs like mine. They really do pay attention to your history, they listen and they work hard to help. I highly highly recommend Orinda Optometry. read more

I just moved to Orinda and I'm so glad I found Orinda Optometry Group. I had an eye infection and they got me in the day I called even though I'm a new patient. I just went back for a follow up and vision check. The staff is very professional and friendly. There was almost no wait time in the office. Dr. Lundquist is extremely pleasant and takes great care with each exam, but I never felt rushed. Plus, you can park right outside the door in their parking lot! I looked for Dr. Eng, however, he had just retired! But there was his daughter following in his footsteps. I've been Dr. Shintani's patient for many years and find her to be extremely competent in all aspects of her practice. She is meticulous and patient during exams and is always friendly, courteous and exhibits an extraordinary level of kindness. She always explains changes to my prescription with precision and thoroughness. She demonstrates the way my vision would change if I were to choose a new prescription and gives me the option of changing or maintaining my present one. I never feel pressure to purchase new lenses if it does not result in very significant improvements. Dr. Shintani also continues to diligently monitor other problems such as floaters, retinal issues, beginning stages of cataracts and provides reassuring feedback concerning the progress of any potential problems. The practice offers a great selection of beautiful frames. Nancy L. is an expert at helping choose the best frame. During my last visit, I decided to order a particular frame and later regretted not asking Nancy to also order another model I had been looking at for comparison. When I returned a few days later to examine the frame that I had ordered, I found that Nancy had miraculously ordered the frame that I wanted for comparison. She somehow managed to order the frame in a size and color that was most appropriate and I ended up choosing it over my first choice. Her intuitive grasp of my needs and willingness to expend extra effort in order to provide the best possible frame is an outgrowth of her dedication to providing the best service. This is not a review for the eye doctors at Orinda Optometry Group, who are all wonderful, but for the front desk staff and billing clerks who have proven to me over the years to be unprofessional and extremely unhelpful. My family and I have been coming here for almost 15 years, and it saddens me to have to write this review but I am simply fed up. The first incident which I considered extremely unprofessional happened almost two years ago when I bought a six months supply of contacts. I paid roughly $240 in the office when I picked up my 6 month supply (a large sum for a working college student). I got a call about a week later from Ashley the front desk clerk saying that she miscalculated my insurance and I now owe the office an additional $40 for my contacts that I already paid for. I didn't have the money at the time to pay more out of pocket, so I received weekly phone calls from Ashley "reminding" me that I still owed them. I ended up paying them the extra $40 a few weeks later when I got my paycheck and I thought that was the end of it. Another week passed and Ashley called me AGAIN saying she miscalculated my insurance a second time and I owed them another $8! I was in utter disbelief that she was still calling me asking for money, especially over 8 measly dollars. Wouldn't you think at this point the office would absorb the $8 mistake they made, and not badger a loyal customer? Nope. Ashley called me weekly, this time for months, asking me to pay the "money I owed on my account". I was so irritated by the entire situation I ignored it for months until I finally gave in and paid the extra $8 because I had been going to them for so long, I didn't want the hassle of having to switch to a new eye doctor. Fast forward to this year. I ordered a new pair of glasses. The prescription in the lenses has not been right twice. I've had the same prescription for years, and I know it hasn't changed because I see crystal clear out of my contacts with the same prescription. I moved out of state right after I got the glasses, so it was very inconvenient at this point to send them back to get fixed but I did it. After they sent me my "fixed" glasses back I still couldn't see clearly at far distances, which was so disappointing. It was so much of a hassle I put off contacting them about the glasses again, until now. I spent a good 4 or 5 months squinting at stuff because I couldn't see clearly, after paying around $300 out of pocket, plus the extra cost and wait time of sending them back and forth to get fixed. I called the office today to let them know my glasses still aren't working for me. I asked if I could simply get a refund on the lenses ($50), so I could take my frames to a local LensCrafters to get them fixed in person. The front desk said pretty rudely there is nothing they could do for me. After years of business with this office, I will not be going back. The headaches and added expenses of not having things done right the first time, or being gracious/helpful when mistakes are made, is just not worth it anymore. read more
