When Doves Cry was an excellent tribute to Prince. We thoroughly enjoyed the concert. We are so glad we came.

Great showing of Matinee! Loved the old style vibe of the theater, if the lobby was a bit small.

A beautiful well-restored picture house. They have done a terrific job and continue to meld the classic with the current.

When I checked my Cal Shakes review I was surprised to see I hadn't updated it in 12 years. I…read morecan't remember whether we subscribed the season following my initial review, but we have attended several productions over the years and liked them. Most recently, Nina and I attended "The Winter's Tale" last season. It was the first play we had attended anywhere since the start of the pandemic and we were thrilled. We took the shuttle bus up the hill and bought dinner from the concession stand. I remember it as being very good. Our seats in the amphitheatre were well placed w/ good sightlines. The acting was excellent, as it always is. "The Winter's Tale" is one we have seen many times and a play we love. We enjoyed the production a lot until the very end, which we both found disappointing. The play is about reconciliation, forgiveness and redemption and those qualities were given short shrift because of the cuts/edits that were made by the adapters, Eric Ting and Philippa Kelly. I have no issues w/ people editing Shakespeare's plays, reimagining the settings, etc, as long as that works in the service of the play's intent. Cutting out the heart of what the play is about doesn't do that. When the play was over we looked at each other in disbelief and disappointment because the rest of it had been so complex, colorful and well done. We will keep an eye out for future productions and will check the reviews, but like Berkeley Rep, we probably won't subscribe.

Sorry to see that this venue has gone out of business. We enjoyed it while it was there.read more

This review is long overdue. My husband and I went back and forth multiple times about whether or…read morenot to post a review, but we ultimately decided that we wish we had known what our experience would be like prior to booking Jessica as our DJ. We got married in the summer of 2023 and below is an account of the things we noticed. When we reached out to Jessica following the wedding and reception, we initially received a response which included a rebuttal to each of our observations, but when we followed up with two more emails about how we were open to rectifying the situation, there was no response. 1. The incorrect song was played for the bridal processional. We are willing to take partial credit for this mistake, as Jessica has a clause in her contract which states that all music must be available on iTunes. While we mistakenly assumed that the version of our song was on iTunes, we don't understand why Jessica didn't tell us beforehand that she had trouble finding the version. We would have sent an mp3 to her right away. Instead, she played a different version of the song and as a result, the part that we told her to fade into did not line up with our version and the fade in was awkward. The mishap started things off differently than we had expected. It impacted me (bride) on a personal level because of the emotional aspect of finding the "perfect" processional song. 2. Our first dance song was cut in half unexpectedly. We double checked that the questionnaire we filled out for her indicated that we wanted it to fade out at 1:52. Instead, the song faded about a minute in. We were very confused (as guests could see on our faces) and were disappointed because we had practiced a lot for our dance. She responded by stating that we gave her a "look" to express that we had stage fright and she faded out early. Neither I nor my husband looked at her during our dance. We also never discussed a "look" with Jessica, so we were even more perplexed when she brought that up. We were smiling, looking at one another, and having a great time until the confusion came. 3. Much of the music from our playlist(s) was not played. As in, almost none of the music played was from our playlist(s). We indicated specific "vibes" that we wanted in our music and that wasn't followed. We don't remember hearing most of the music we indicated for cocktail hour or dinner and neither did our guests. We think we heard a couple of songs for open dancing, but just a few. She responded by stating that we might be surprised about songs we simply missed because we were away at photos and whatnot. We asked her to send us a list or screenshot of the playlist to confirm, but did not receive a response. 4. We spoke with her over the phone about her playing the role of "emcee" in addition to DJing. We hoped that meant she would take initiative to check in with us about making announcements, hyping the crowd, etc. From our perspective, she did not present with the energy level we were hoping to see. This may have been a personal preference on our part, but her presence as a DJ was more on the passive side as compared to every other wedding we have attended. Ultimately, we would have gone in a different direction if we could go back. We are not the type to leave a less than stellar review for a service, but we feel that it's important to have the things that we regretted laid out as objectively as possible.

This is all thanks to making one of the best decisions yet-- hiring Saúl of Cross my Heart Films. When I was searching for someone to make our video, I chanced upon CMHF on Google and was one of the top searches. I visited his IG and immediately knew we needed him. It was love at first sight. He was able to capture the classy, vintage and fun vibe we were aiming for. He stood out among the many searches we made. His creativity is unmatched. We trusted him with the entire process, and I am glad we did. He has a unique way of capturing love through his lenses. People who watched the video commented they were smiling the entire time. That's because Saúl made us feel comfortable to be our authentic selves. Up to this day, I keep watching the video on repeat myself. It makes me feel so good and happy and excited to get married. Saúl nailed it! He even accommodated many of our requests, even if it meant having to finish the video sooner than his lead time. His expertise is well-worth our money. 100/10 highly recommend if you're looking for someone who has a unique and heartwarming take in making your wedding video.

Then we were greeted again once we were inside, this time by Jay Alexander himself! He welcomed us, and found us a seat himself for us to get comfortable and order some drinks before the show started. He did this with everyone who came in, took the time to learn our names, and even performed magic while we were waiting for the stage show. That was amazing enough already, then the stage show started. Not only was the magic and mentalism great, his demeanor and excitement for what he was doing was palpable. My wife and I could tell he loves doing this, and that makes it even more fun than it would have been otherwise. My wife and I were also brought 'on-stage' and that was also a lot of fun. I have been to other shows where the magician does not make the spectator feel comfortable, and this couldn't be further from that. He made us feel like the most important thing was that we had a good time, and we certainly did. I cant wait to see Jay again. Next time we are definitely taking the kids too, then I'll have to bring all the other members of my family as well. I cannot recommend Jay's show enough. Please do yourself the favor of going!
