My only bad experience at Orleans. Be cautious if Queer or POC. I've been a regular at Orleans for years and it has been my local go to bar. All of my previous experiences, dining and at the bar, have been excellent. Yesterday was the first time I've ever felt unsafe at any Davis Square bar. The bartender (M in beanie with shoulder length hair) was rude when we asked for a pitcher of water (many pitchers of water were on tables) and when he said no and we asked for 4 waters he got them and then slammed them on the bar spilling half of two of them. One member of our group (M South East Asian) went to get a round and the same bartender asked "what do you fuckin want?" And then cursed at him again during ordering. After we got our drinks the bartender brought another man (not in a uniform, regular or employee? Not sure) over and pointed and laughed at our group and we overheard them use the works f*ggot more than once. (Our group is Queer folks) When one of us went to order a round of drinks before he could order he was told by a woman behind the bar (waitress or bartender?) told him that a "witness" said our friend (South East Asian) threw up in the bathroom so we were all cut off. He had not been to the bathroom in an hour and didn't throw up. A group of staff in uniform (3) and others not in uniform (3) (6 guys total) came up to our table and told us that we had to leave and were "lucky that they let us stay this long". The bartender yelled at our group again and then said that a witness pointed out our friend who threw up ( a different person then before one is a tall white male and the other a shorter South East Asian man- they couldn't be confused) when we asked what the issue was the bouncer yelled it was time to go. He grabbed my friend (ripping a large hole in his shirt) and then the group of guys (not clear if all were employees) shoved us out of the restaurant. It was 1205 and we had 3 rounds of drinks and a round of waters in 3 hours while watching karaoke. We were dancing and having fun and had no interactions with other guests. Prior to this Orleans was one of my favorite bars: great service, food and drinks. What happened to my group now makes me feel concerned to go there. Maybe there was confusion and maybe someone threw up but getting called slurs by staff when you're a customer enjoying a nice night is upsetting. Then to get kicked out by a group of people that maybe didn't all work there who yelled at us when we had caused no issues with staff or guests was out of left field. My overall review would be fun spot during the day but Queer and POC folks be aware of the staffing, safety and surroundings. read more

Orleans gets a lot of flack. Folks who go once may see it as pretentious, out-of-place or confused in its identity. And it is, sorta. A few female friends frequent the joint because they dig the grub. Having only indulged in the Pizza Neopolitan ($10) and most recently, the Cuban ($8), I can say it's decent and reasonably priced. Beer on tap is "expanded standard" and the specialty cocktails mimic the basics with maybe a fruit syrup (Mango Mojitos! Pomegranate Mojitos! Pomango Mojitos! Ok, ok...) In all fairness, the original is well played and jacked with mint. Never got the scammer vibe from the clientele, making it more of a watering hole than a sophisticated one-night-standery. It's close to home so I'm often rolling in sporting a T and flops (nothing else, dangledangle) - nobody cares. To Michael L's point, avoid this as a dinner date destination. Go during the week, early evening when the window wall is open. Grab a spot on the comfy couches and kick back a few with friends. I think that's what Orleans is for and they do a 3-star job. Oh! And be sure to keep an eye out for the guy that stands by the bus stop out front. For hours at a time. My friend was looking for a cool place to have dinner for her 21st Birthday. Well, she had a few suggestions on what she wanted. She didn't want it to be a chain- check. Had to have parking- check. Close enough to Boston to hit up later that night- check. And yes she requested Karaoke :-X -check! Lol There are plenty of other places that fit this criteria but Orleans seemed like a great option and I had been here before. They renovated the restaurant since I was last here and it looks so much better. They did take out the couches and added more tables. Good choice cause the place was packed. They also removed the huge TV on the wall and a few others. The sports bar vibe is definitly gone and it feels trendier. The food was still great, although my husband was the only unsatisfied customer. He wasn't happy with his BBQ chicken pizza. You expect BBQ sauce on it but instead it was lightly drizzled on top. Yeah that won't do for him- he's a BBQ sauce freak! They brought him out extra sauce and he was happy. The favorite meal from the group was the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and veggies. I had a bite of my friend's veggies and yummy it was! It had this great buttery cream sauce.. I could've eaten a whole of that. And the karaoke was fun! Ok, so our mission for the evening was to find a cool spot that had karaoke, and Orleans did not disappoint! First off, I had contacted the place via Facebook Messenger, and my message was returned promptly- impressive! When my boyfriend and I arrived, we were greeted by the manager, Chris, who was super nice. After I inquired, he was the one who had replied on Facebook. The karaoke was fun. I'm a sound snob, and I was pretty impressed by it! Everyone was following along with the singers, giving it a fun & upbeat vibe. We sat at the bar, which was nice. The bartender was friendly and she made me a really good drink! We ordered food: The Thai lettuce wraps were terrific, the spinach & artichoke dip was great, and the loaded nachos were good too! Now as most of us know, there always has to be one assclown in every bunch. A drunken 30-something stood next to me at the bar to get a beer where my boyfriend was sitting (he was up singing at that moment), and he started to conduct himself inappropriately by eating our nachos that were right in front of him, then he became an antagonizer to us. Fortunately, the bartender saw the whole thing, and she took the nachos off our tab. Additionally, the manager came over to us promptly and apologized that this incident occurred, and acknowledged that the guy was being an inappropriate ass (not in those words, but you get my point)! I came here with friends for the Wednesday night trivia, and we did well, so I'm trying not to let that influence my overall opinion of Orleans. I like the atmosphere (cozy and upscale), I like the beer list (a nice variety, something for everyone), and I especially liked my poutine burger (cooked to order, reasonably poutine-y toppings including a few fries, and a slab of applewood smoked bacon). Other food we ordered included the short ribs (tasty), and Brussels sprouts (slightly undercooked). Orleans does, however, hold itself back with a few things that keep the experience from being more enjoyable. Service was slow. We were seated for quite a while before being contacted the first time for a drink order, which took a bit of time too (as the night went on, our server gave us better attention, perhaps sensing we were doing well in the trivia and hoping for a big tip). The water is horrible. I sent several glasses of ours back and the waiter admitted they were having a problem with "too much chlorination" in the dishwasher. One person at our table ordered a specialty drink advertises as "topped with strawberry moscato." The waiter informed us they were out of strawberry moscato. We said, "That's all right," thinking they'd just make the drink without the strawberry moscato. There was an awkward silence for about 10 seconds, and the waiter said, "Actually, there's quite a lot of the moscato in the drink." Does anyone else besides me think there's a difference between "topped with" and "quite a lot?" Hot water out of the tap in the bathroom sinks would be nice too. The Wednesday night trivia is run by a local group that has similar trivia nights in other pubs in the Boston area, Pop Quiz Team Trivia. We like Mike and his trivia and hosts, and this influenced our decision to visit Orleans. Without the trivia, however, Orleans is just another decent pub with decent food and drink - not a bad place at all, but not special enough to make it a hangout. read more

I was steadfastly AGAINST having the recent OYFP Be a Rock Star event here (http://www.yelp.com/events/somerville-be-a-rock-star----a-rock-band-competition-with-costumes). The previous few times I went, I thought the food was overpriced and the service terrible. However, this time I was pleasantly surprised. The manager and wait staff could not have been nicer or more attentive. We ordered off the bar menu (slightly more reasonable for a casual evening), and enjoyed our pizzas. They weren't the best pizzas EVER, but they were good. Flavorful. Like my mom says, "hunger is the best spice," and we were STARVING. Plus, Orleans donated five $20 gift certificates for the Rock Band competition, which we were participating in for charity (http://oyfp.org/BOS/events/view/155/). They host a rock band night twice a month on Sunday nights where you can play with your own group, or with strangers. The whole thing is projected on the big screen, which is pretty cool. So, all in all, I would go to Orleans again. There are enough TVs to make it a good choice for a game night (like, say Celtics Game 5), there is a patio and open windows at the front, and the service and food are satisfying. read more

Food was meh. I got the Barilla tacos, and the seasoning was just weird. There was so much cheese that you could barely taste anything. When you could taste the meat, it was bizarre. My husband got the scallop scampi. The tricolor pasta was linguine, but we expected angel hair. The sauce was bland, and the scallops lacked a nice sear. We sat at the bar, and we were ignored while the bartender socialized with some regulars. We will not go back. read more

It's not bad at all, but not amazing, and I have two quibbles that lose them stars. First, their menu is pitched way too far to the sweet side. Everything has an added sugar of some kind, whether sweet sauce or pineapple or just straight sugar. I know that's our American palate, but I always prefer when someone doesn't just accept it. Second, their beer list has some nasty price surprises. When cocktail prices are given but draft prices aren't, I figure that means everything's around 6. Not the case -- some of those pints will run you $8 or more. Orleans is neither the sort of place that can get away with that pricing nor that can justify not advertising it up front. Orleans was the first "social" place I ever went to in Boston and it's a great space. Bars aren't normally my thing (I outgrew the go deaf/shout at the top of your lungs scene) but this place is a nice mix of chill lounge and open bar. There's seating for all kinds, from intimate booths to plush couches to dining tables to high bar tables. I come here for the drinks. They're affordable and generous in quantity. The seasonal pumpkin martini is absolutely fabulous. I still fantasize about it. They're famous (supposedly) for their mango mojito. It's pretty good, definitely worth a try. The food is decent bar food. Nothing spectacular, but good. All in all, a pretty chill spot if you happen to be in the Davis Sq area. read more

I visited in a group of five on a Saturday night, and there were just so many holes in the experience that I can't in good conscience give anything more than two stars. Even though we were more or less happy, that was because we were a group of old friends catching up, and it takes a lot to rain on that parade. The biggest concern was how long everything took. We had been warned in the beginning the kitchen was backed up, but it was out of control. Even drinks seemed to take a long time. We were luckily not in a hurry, but the entire process from start to finish two over two hours. In addition to being mind-blowingly slow, the communication left much to be desired. They actually ran out of the item I had ordered, but they didn't come to tell me until about 45 minutes after I ordered it. It was only after everyone else's entrees arrived that they came to tell me they had run out of what I ordered. I ended up just sharing my husband's entrée. They did take off one of our beers and the order of fries we had for an appetizer, but it still felt like a dud that I couldn't even get a meal. The food itself was average. The appetizer of truffle fries did not have any truffle flavor at all. They tasted more or less like average fries, and the garlic aioli tasted like plain mayo. The mushroom gnocchi dish was ok, but nothing to write home about. It was nice to be able to sit outside, and the company made up for the deplorable service, but the experience now shows me why that was the only place with available reservations on that particular Saturday evening. read more

ARE YOU SERIOUS? First, if I order this I can't do it as an appetizer, because appetizers are about sharing and I can't share this, I hog it... Second, if you do get this make sure you have saved some of the phenoms bread that they served prior to your meal to soak up the broth from the mussels... trust me... Oh and before you order your appetizers, beware, the hummus is garlicky, so if you are on a date, make sure you both eat the hummus to equal out the breath factor... Dinner, I generally get the Salmon or Flank Steak... I attached a picture of the Salmon I got there the last time, It's always good, yes it's $22.00, but it's consistently good so is the Flank Steak, fyi, if you don't like blue cheese, make sure someone in the kitchen knows that.... Now I come here I would say "monthly" and I have consistently had poor service in the "restaurant", which is why I now eat and drink at the bar... It's not so horrible that I would never come back, it's just well, "okay" Overall I really really Orleans and I'll continue to come here... Orleans is one of my favorite neighborhood bars... and I don't even live in this neighborhood. I can't believe that I've been coming here for 4 years and still haven't written a review. The food and service has been consistently wonderful since the first day I came in. I love their mussels, chock full of lobster and and other goodies, as well as the pizzas and nachos, which are slammmmmmin! You really gotta give it up to a restaurant that doesn't charge you extra money for guacamole during these tough economic times. They always have creative, tasty specials. Everything from steak to swordfish. And - drum roll please - they have my favorite wine EVER, Cloudline Pinot Noir. I can't find this stuff anywhere, it is just so delish! I will keep coming back here, but only because its so darn convenient. Orleans is a large bar/restaurant that doesn't know what it wants to be. Sometimes its a quiet place to get drink, sometimes an upscale restaurant, and sometimes a music venue. Unfortunately, the food is a bit pricey for what you get. There aren't enough shows to turn it into a happening spot for a show. And the set up isn't really conducive for stopping in with a crowd. However, the staff is relatively quick and professional. Beer prices are on par with the area, and the place is always spotlessly clean. Its also just far enough out of Davis that it isn't constantly mobbed (think J-Tree). read more

I had a flatbread which I had no complaints about and for how big the flatbread was I thought it was absolutely worth the price. They had a great selection of beers which I am always a fan of. So this place is my new favourite watering hole. I finalized my divorce today and was looking for a restaurant in the area that was open at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. I stumbled across Orleans and went in. The bartender was the absolute sweetest woman ever! I had a pumpkin martini which was absolutely divine and ended up chatting with her and another fabulous customer about my day. This bartender is the absolute queen!!! The cocktails [ I also had a French 75] were exquisite and it was by far the best experience I have ever had at a bar of a restaurant alone as a woman. Came for drinks and the Moscow Mule is served in a mason jar (so its a bigger drink, get it for that reason a lone) and was great. I guess they ran out of the jars later in the night, but my drink did cost less then too... Service was fast. Karaoke on Friday nights! This made the back of the restaurant seem really empty, so maybe they should make more room at the front for dancing and singing. Or maybe it's fine during the day/early night. One guy killed it with the song from The Breakfast Club. If he's there every Friday night they'll get a crowd going! read more

It's spacious for a bar. It was a Monday night so it wasn't crowded at all. It was a nice place to watch the Celtics game and play some cards. The service was good. I felt taken care of. There weren't many people there but I was with a large group and groups can get some bad service at places. I had the salmon and spinach salad. The salmon was cooked well. The spinach had a nice crispness. The oranges didn't make sense. The texture was really different and it was an overwhelming flavor. There was also too much vinaigrette. I felt like the salad was doused in it. The tomatoes and almonds were fine. Overall I would definitely recommend Orleans. My friends enjoyed their burgers. It's a nice relaxing atmosphere. Orleans is an OK place. Both visits get a 3 star. My first trip included 1.5 doz of their $1 raw oysters (weekday 3-7pm), pulled pork empanadas, grande chili nachos, and ribeye steak. Oysters were 'somewhat' fresh. Pork empanadas had a flaky shell and sweet BBQ flavor - it was good! Second visit was on Taco Tuesdays. Oysters were not fresh. Blackened shrimp tacos were delightful. This review is for an experience I had on July 20: I made a reservation at Orleans, and in the reservation I asked for a table on the patio. I showed up and was told the patio cannot be reserved- ok, no big deal. But when I asked if they knew how long the wait might be, I was met with "I have NO WAY of knowing that information." Uhhh, yes you do. Take a walk around, see if any tables have check presenters, and do some basic math. But ok. "Can we sit by the window and open it?" "NO!!! It's too hot out!" "It's 75 degrees!" "Well the MANAGER (clearly the guy talking to me at the time) says it's TOO HOT!!!!" - yes he is yelling the whole time. So, my date and I left. I am not a write a review type of person but when you taste perfection you need to rave about it. I ordered a special so I'm sorry in advance to all the people who will be sad it's not available. But buttery whipped mashed potatoes with fall apart with just a fork short rib in a Smokey bbq Demi glaze, gentle sautéed Brussel sprouts and bacon bits which gives the dish a nice crunch factor and lends to the overall decadence of the dish. I went here once for brunch three years ago and it was great, the ambiance was bright and energetic. I went a couple of weeks ago and the atmosphere pulled a complete 180. If you're seated in the back of the restaurant you'll get no light, except for the yellow lights above the table, because the banquets block in the sunlight from the huge windows in the front of the restaurant. It was honestly depressing sitting back there, and the walls had dirt on them and chipped paint. The food was incredibly mediocre, "smash burger" was a regular burger, and the fish tacos looked like t*rds. Every other restaurant in Davis square has similar menus to this, so just go somewhere else. read more

Came here this past Thursday for their "wings special", $5 for 10 wings. The wings were delicious but the services is what knocks it down to 2 stars. Our waitress was non-existant. We asked another waiter about 6 times before he was able to get us water because we couldn't find our waitress. When the wings came out we asked for Blue Cheese instead of the Ranch that was given to us. We received the Blue Cheese about 20 minutes later. It wasn't even busy. It was around 9:00 pm at night and no big tables or anything. I had the sweet garlic chili wings, which were so good that I may have to come back. Have wanted to check out for awhile now. My friend lives nearby and we were attending the annual ArtBeat event and came in for lunch. They also serve Saturday brunch the menu looked excellent with different options but I was semi-good and had the arugula salad with cranberry and pear, my friend had the Southwestern Cobb. Service was prompt waitress took our drink orders, I got a cranberry/seltzer/lime and my friend a diet pepsi/very large glasses. Waitress asked if we wanted to add grilled chicken/and I did. Both salads were excellent. Came out quickly. A/C was nice and everyone was friendly. I would definitely return next time in the area. read more

Like your date wont think that you are trying to hard by picking this place, its not super fancy but also like not ratty. they will also easily be able to find something that they will like. 3.5 stars, rounded up, for THURSDAY ONLY. This review is primarily for Thursdays, when they have their wings special. I'm not sure I'd go any other day, even though they have oyster specials during happy hours. I quite like $1 hh oysters in general, but you have to be very careful as to where you get them. I'll perhaps be back at some point to try them; but for now, the wings. The prices of the wings have gone up slightly (as of February 2017), but they're still rock bottom, generally speaking. $0.40 per wing, bone in or bone out, your choice. This means that 10 wings is only $4.00. Of course, when I go I almost always get something to drink, so I don't feel like a total cheapskate. I also got the waffle fries the last couple times I was here, which really aren't too bad, and go pretty well with wings. Definitely DON'T get the creme brulee though, it's really not good here. read more

I had the steak and egg breakfast pizza and, to give credit where credit is due, it was tasty. By that I mean the steak was seasoned and cooked well. Unfortunately, it was COLD. Not warm, not even lukewarm, but cold. Service was incredibly slow even though the restaurant looked only 1/3 full. We almost used up the time on our 2 hour parking spot waiting for the food to come...then the check to come...then the check to get picked up by our server...then our card and receipt to be returned...I'm surprised we're still not sitting there. When our server returned our credit card and receipt, she literally just tossed it on the table and said, "have a nice day" as she was walking away from us. No kidding, she practically had her back turned as she was "putting down" the check. As I was getting up my seat, I stepped on a piece of bread that had not been picked up from the floor. I can see how this can be overlooked IF the place was busy, but it was close to the same spot where one of the servers stood with the remote adjusting the TV and there was no one around. Davis Square has plenty of restaurants that will save you from slow service and cold entrees. I recommend you go somewhere else. read more

These 4 stars go to Mike the bar tender here on Thursday nights. Thanks to Mike, my three star review jumped up to 4, so Orleans, you can give him a raise! Because I just moved here, and he alone makes me want to come back here. Plus, I also didn't get a chance to sit on those really really comfy looking red couches and chairs in the front. And I definitely want to lounge there at some point, with the doors open, fresh air flowing in on me, while I sip my cocktail.... Let me tell you why Mike is awesome. We went here, and the place was half empty table wise, but since we weren't eating, we couldn't sit at any of the tables....so we find two tables in the bar area and squeeze our party at those, and our waitress couldn't understand Chris when he ordered his Jim and Diet....he had to say it three times and then after she got it, she came back minutes later to double check the mixer.....hmmmmm Then we got our drinks, and my rum and diet was SO SO WEAK. Wow, I have not been that disappointed in a drink in quite some time, but Mike was there to save the day. I went to the bar and said, i just moved here...but i don't think there is any alcohol in my drink....and he asked me what i was drinking and then filled it up to the brim with more rum!!! NOW THAT IS WHAT A BAR TENDER SHOULD DO!!
