We stopped in to buy a few treats! My BFF bought us a Needham (we had to try it) and a couple of the chocolate turtles. The Needham is a Maine thing, I had never heard of it. It's similar to a Mounds, but with potatoes added. Curious! I had a bite, and it was pretty good, still pretty sweet. The turtles, of course, were devine!! You can't really go wrong here! We had wanted to try the Whoopie Pie's (another Maine thing) but they were sold out. Cute little shop, lots of sweet options! A good place to pop into while visiting Boothbay. read more

Nestled in the heart of Boothbay Harbor's busy main streets along the harbor you'll find the old-timey Orne's Candy Store which has been serving up locally made sweets to locals and tourists alike for decades. We stopped in after a ghost walk about 30 minutes before the shop was closing one evening. The employee behind the counter was friendly and knowledgable about the products in the case I was drooling over and eyeballing. In the end we wound up with some chocolate covered wild Maine blueberries (do yourself a favor and get some NOW if you're reading this) as well as the chocolate covered graham cracker and hazelnut truffle (also highly recommend if you're a hazelnut lover). I stopped by Orne's after having dinner nearby to pick up some chocolates for dessert. They have a great variety, some of the usual standards (think cremes, caramels, peanut butter melts) but also some interesting house flavors. Each of the chocolates we purchased were fresh and delicious; I particularly enjoyed the wintergreen which you don't find everywhere. In addition to chocolates they also have candy such as gummies and salt water taffy as well as a variety of other types. Service was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. While not cheap, the quality was there and prices compared favorably to other candy shops in the region. The seal on the box said they are in their "third century" so to be around that long you know they are doing something right. The store has a fun, old-school vibe so stop in if you're visiting Boothbay Harbor...I'll bet you walk out with a few treats. read more

This is a small candy shop with various homemade candy. The selection is not large and the candy is OK but nothing special. having experienced the candy shops of Europe and larger cities that have spoiled us. I like chocolate and my wife likes candy. She says the candy is good but the fudge is inferior to the other in-town location on By-way. As far as chocolate goes, it cannot compete with Belgium which I think is the best in the world. But for a local company it is satisfactory. I think it is reversed because of its proximity foot traffic, tourism and basically being the only "candy" shop in the harbor. My wife did buy some sweet candies as there were a few items she has had difficulty finding. Overall it is one of those shops you would find in a touristy town whose main audience is the many tourists that pass its windows. Keep walking! read more

They have 'made 'here' candy that is excellent and hard to find today, such as Penuchi (butter and brown sugar fudge) with and without nuts. They can become crowded when the town is busy, but their quality is worth it for their High-quality candies. The standard commercial factory-made sweets are slightly overpriced but are in the middle of a resort town. read more

While my wife and I were waiting for our whale watching cruise to begin, We stopped by and found this local candy store. They had all sorts of candies and fudge is in the glass case and the lady helping us seem to know a lot about them, and was very proud because she said we would come back for more. Had we not come back from our cruise by the time the store was closed we definitely would have. I really enjoyed the hazelnut truffle! They had all sorts of bagged candies for your travels around the coast, handmade ones behind the glass case, and some cute things for all ages. Definitely a nice old Timey candy store. read more

This store is a little tiny candy store.... just like one would expect to find in a small beautiful seaside town in the state of Maine. When I visited everything in the store was heavily discounted because they were getting ready for the start of the winter season when the store closes. I probably wouldn't have purchase what I did if everything were at the full regular price. The full regular price was kinda high in my opinion. The chocolate covered blueberries were very good. My purchase was one of those purchases where you say to yourself, "I'm not an animal. I'm not a pig. I'll just eat 4 or 5 blueberries while on the drive home." Well, when I got home, there were no more blueberries left in that darn bag. Oink oink. read more

As sweet as it gets The Orne Candy Store has certainly been around. A cool lady named Addie Orne opened it's door back on July 4th, 1885 and it's been selling sweets in Boothbay Harbor ever since. Back then the also sold fruit and other things that were commonly needed in the town but the Orne family quickly realized that the future was in sweet things. The Orne family finally sold the business to the Webster family in the 1960 but the new owners made a commitment to keep the business doing what it's always has done. Selling the best and tasty chocolates and sweets possible. The Webster family still is in charge and you can frequently see one or more of them prowling around the store. Always friendly and more than willing to tell you everything you could possible want to know about their history and the wonderful things they sell Of course the really push the fudge, especially the amazing blueberry fudge but there is a whole lot more here than just great fudge. An amazing variety of cool chocolates, salt water taffy, licorice and of course gummy lobsters. Most of the stuff is made locally in Maine but one of the Websters did tell me that a few sweet things now come from Massachusetts. Doesn't really matter everything in here is fantastic. They make absolutely no claims of healthy benefits and even have a sign saying their fudge is full of cholesterol and fats. A wonderful old store that still does what they always have done. Just give their customers the most amazing and tastiest sweets possible, without any compromise. read more

A cute little candy shop along the main walk of Boothbay... Orne's has been serving Boothbay high quality candies for about 135 years... I don't know if they started out great and have gone the bulk route only recently but their chocolate was less than spectacular and their selection only average... impressively high prices for this didn't help overmuch - if it were less expensive it would be a fine buy for the dollar amounts they are charging... Entering through Orne's old, wooden double-door, one leaf of which probably has a real bell on it, one feels that one is stepping back in time. Outside of Paris, it's the most picturesque, and yet simple, candy store I have seen. You would think it could not avoid feeling kitsch, but it does. It's delightful, like a diorama in a museum into which, miraculously, you alone can actually enter, and in which the little candies are actually edible and fresh and delicious, and the assistant a real person, who somehow inhabits this peaceful way station of time, just to serve you and to do whatever is done in the little back room. Mystery. The store is worth visiting even if you don't like candy, but the candy itself is also very evocative, and includes a nice selection of things, including some unusual items - it seems to me, though I'm not an expert. Some things are pricey, other things not so much. If you like sweets and feel you deserve a treat, treat yourself to a visit to this charming store. I don't go often, but I'm always reassured to see it's still there, and I find it more and more charming each time I visit. read more

This is my update. I love this place. We visit Boothbay every year for a couple of weeks. We are up to almost a pound every other day. The chocolate is the best! My preference are the nuts but the others like the chews. I'll finish this review later because I am on my way to get another pound! read more

I've been coming here for quite a while. The candy is of good quality and the fudge is really tasty. This place has a great buzz about it, and the owners are very friendly. My only gripe is parking can be an issue in the summer, but hey that's a given in Boothbay! :) read more

Look I didn't get fudge anywhere else but the fudge here is ahhhhhmazing. The penuche caramel is amazing and the other flavors kick butt too. Felt they had more interesting flavors than the other shops. read more

AMAZING FUDGE (and cheaper than the Fudge Factory across the road). The penuchi sea salt caramel is a must-try, as are the chocolate sea salt caramel, the chocolate peanut butter, and the mud slide. Their saltwater taffy is also delightful! And the shop itself is adorable. :) read more

The only thing keeping this from a 5* review is that I counted the "100-fish" bag of Swedish fish. There were 81 in it. If the Ornes' team is weighing these bags as they prepare them, the scale is off; if not, why not err on the more generous side? read more
