This a Cute candy shop located on the main stretch of downtown portland. There is lots to choose from, whatever candy style you are on to it's here. If you're in the mood for sweet candy, definitely worth stopping in. Be aware tho they are a bit pricey. I was looking for some maine made ites to bring home as gift and I bought locally made blue berry maple jam and a variety of locally made fudge and had small bag of candy and came in at close to $50 and I barely bought anything. Just keep that in mind. Other than the prices, its neat and well stocked. Popped in on a whim and was very pleased to find a selection of locally made La Nef chocolates at the check out (which were delicious by the way). Old Port Candy is one of the many shops you'll find in the Old Port section of Portland. I was in the area window shopping and soaking in the aesthetics when I found myself in front of the entrance. I had nothing to lose by taking a peek in, so off I went. The store is pretty typical of candy shops one finds in touristy areas - especially in the Northeast. They have a selection of fudge, taffy, as well as chocolate confections behind the main display case. There's also commercially available candy scattered throughout the store and a few souvenirs. I picked up some chocolate-covered blueberries, because Maine, and a few of the chocolate confections behind the counter. One that stood out to me in particular was a Needham which was described as a potato-coconut confection covered in chocolate. It tasted fine - I didn't get much potato but did get a decent amount of coconut flavor. Service was friendly, and overall Old Port Candy delivered the goods - worth a stop in during your Portland explorations. read more

There is lots of fudge, licorice, retro candy bars and treats, along with Needham's, and chocolate covered cherries and other candies on display from Haven's chocolates. Super nice staff. Really fantastic collection of both old and new wrapped candies. They even had the old wax soda bottle candy packs AND wax mustaches (am I obsessed with wax??). My kids decided that the donuts we got nearby were not enough to satisfy their sweet tooth and dragged me into this place. I will be honest, I do not generally like sweets.... just doesn't do much for me. So, we go into this place and my kids are, well, like kids in a candy store ... grabbing all kinds of sweets. Meanwhile I am milling around the front waiting for them and then it happened... ZOTZ!!! Holy crap!!! Flashback to my childhood!!! I used to live for these damn things. If you have never tried these, you must immediately!! It seems like an innocuous little candy, but after awhile the sweet candy shell gives way to a sour, frothy explosion reminiscent of the science fair experiment you did in elementary school where you replicated a volcano with baking soda and vinegar. The sweet and sour foam in your mouth is fantastic. This place also has Pop Rocks which are another wonderful candy from my youth. I remember my friends and I mixing Pop Rocks and soda pop in our mouths because we heard that Mikey from the Life cereal commercials died trying the same stunt. Needless to say, we lived. Came by Old Port Candy Co. to buy some candy and gifts for friends back home. They have an awesome assortment of gummies, chocolate bars, maple sugar candies, fudge and chocolate covered turtles. You can get them with cashews, walnuts, peanuts, almonds, dark and milk chocolate. I bought one for myself, and I forgot all about it until today when I checked my bag. (one week later...) and the dark chocolate covered almond caramel turtle was just as delicious as if I had just bought it yesterday. Still fresh! The amazing sense of nostalgia I get is only part of why I completely, totally, unequivocally, LOVE Old Port Candy Company. From the sound of the screen door opening when you walk in to the candy cigarettes and dot candy, this place has everything I loved about my favorite candy store when I was a kid. BUT, don't let that mislead you into thinking it's not a 100% up-to-date shop that has all of your modern sweets needs covered. Because it does. It does in spades. There's bins and bins of bulk candy, all color-coded so understanding the pricing is easy as...fudge. There's fudge too. It's all made there and it's eye-rollingly good. I tried some chocolate-peanutbutter-fluff recently that forced an, "Oh my god" from my lips. They have your full range of jelly beans, separated by flavor and available in bulk of course, your Maine-based sweets, your chocolates, a great assortment of gift bags and boxes and baskets, and even some hand-dipped chocolate covered bacon. Giant bins of candy you can scoop into bags yourself and are sold by the pound. There are jelly bean bins, and chocolate bins, and the usual popular candy bins. They have a shelf of novelty candies and gifty type of candies. The unique thing about this place is that they make their own fudge. They had slabs of fudge I'd never seen before. They had a peanut butter and marshmallow fudge, orange cream fudge, lemon meringue fudge, and of course the basics chocolate, maple, and peanut butter. I had to resist buying it all! I ended up purchasing some malted milk balls, of which they have quite a selection. I have the worlds biggest sweet tooth. This place is evil!! I went in to get some goodies before a matinee over at the Nickelodeon. They were out of fried egg gummies, but one of the gals working assured me green frogs have the same peachy taste! I had been in here last summer and got some gummies, chocolates and jelly beans, but I had never tried the fudge. Oh the fudge. This is not the fudge we know on the jersey shore. There was a great selection of candy here and they did a wonderful job with social distancing. The candies are sold individually (vs by the pound) so it felt like they were a little on the pricey side but it was hard to gauge. We got about 8 pieces of chocolate for $15. They do offer different price levels for their candy and the least expensive was $2.75 per 1/4 pound. We purchased the double chocolate dipped peanuts. My grandmother "from away" loves the fudge here, so it's my duty as her granddaughter to stop in and buy some before I visit her for the holidays every year. They also have a Fudge of the Month Club if you really need your monthly fudge fix. The nostalgia candy section is pretty bountiful and I love coming in the summer for the bulk salt water taffy (please bring back the sour flavors that you used to carry!) There's usually one person out front and another making fudge, so the service can get pretty slow. One time I walked out because I was ignored for over 10 minutes, and I decided I had better things to do with my time. It wasn't enough of a slight to stop returning (it isn't typical to be treated so), but it was an annoyance on that particular day. They request cash for transactions under $10, but they aren't pushy about it if you have a card. I find the items in the display to be tourist pricey (and not worth it), but I'm also not a huge fan of chocolate. read more

Oh man, I cannot believe that this place is rated so highly. Yes, the place is super cute and gives you a vibe like you're at a candy shop in an old movie from the 60's. I got 3 (small - but there's only one size) bags of candy, all stuff that should have been super cheap. 1 was filled with Jelly Belly jelly beans, the other with chocolate covered cherries/blueberries (the same kind you get at Trader Joe's for WAY, WAY cheaper.. however these were Maine ones), and 1 was half filled with malted milk balls. I also got one piece (ONE!) of pumpkin fudge that was ridiculously delicious. THE WHOLE THING COST FIFTY BUCKS!!! That's right people... half of a hundred dollar bill. Half a benjamin. On a couple pounds of candy. Not to mention the girl behind the counter was really not very nice. When she told me the price I really wanted to leave, but I'm a pansy so I just paid anyway and grumbled about it to myself on my way home. I think it's highly possible she mischarged me for the chocolate covered candy but you can't see what's going on on the old style register and with her calculator, and the receipt is not itemized so I didn't want to fight about it. I'm a punk. This place is a total tourist trap. If you must go here I'd stick with one piece of fudge, and one piece of chocolate covered bacon (be prepared to pay 7 bucks plus tax for the experience) and then get the hell out of dodge. read more

Free piece of fudge when you check in, right on! I just fruit cake fudge sitting there as a holiday special, but the fluffernutter is not to be missed! For me, I love the bulk candy! I am a gummy candy fiend and love being able to mix and match sharks, dinosaurs, bears, worms, frogs and cherries. They also have a great selection of Jelly Belly jelly beans, another of my favorites. This little shop has a ton packed in to and often will have coffee available as well.
