I would definitely not recommend this service. Although fine in the past, my recent experiences with Orromac and its owner, Osama, have gone from his being polite and respectful to his being rude, demeaning, disrespectful and accusatory. I have recommended his service to others in the past, but something has changed in recent years. I have been a customer for over 20 years, have bought Apple products from Osama, and he has been maintaining my large desktop computer in my home office as well as other smaller ones. I use an iMac chiefly, The owner was competent, polite at that time , efficient, and local,. But now Orramac seems to no longer guarantee its work, though they of course charge for it, and the owner is too busy to follow up and makes it clear he doesn't want to. Where before he welcomed the business, now apparently it angers him. When I called this month for annual service, and some specific repairs, Osama began by putting me down for needing the service. After much complaining, and insults directed at me, he finally sent a technician, Mike, a nice young man, who, by his own admission, was more familiar with PC;s, and not familiar with the Office Suite for Mac. He said that Osama, his boss, was. Though Mike worked only on my Word program, and the other things I had asked him to do,the young technician managed to "disappear" my desktop personal email, wiping out years of work. He had not been asked to touch my email. Unfortunately, I had left the room for a moment when this happened. I saw the results later: my email program in the trash and irretrievable, after the technician had already been paid, and had left. This happened late on a Friday afternoon and so out of courtesy I waited till after the weekend to call the business. Again,I had already paid the Orromac bill, and the technician partially managed to solve the problems he had been called to do. He had not been asked to touch my personal email, this he did on his own,. Osama was more than reluctant to come and fix the problem, accused me for having done it myself, blamed me for waiting till after the weekend to call, and when he did come to my home office, he walked in wanting to argue with me .Osama was demeaning throughout, accusing me, and told me repeatedly he was too busy to fix the problem. He sighed and complained. throughout told me repeatedly he was too busy, couldn't be bothered, and got up and left. The lost email account problem was not fixed. I am a professional writer and editor, & have used Apple products in my home office throughout my professional life. This experience was upsetting and unprofessional. read more

Okay, I never write Yelp reviews, but I felt like I had to chime in on this one. My experience was amazing. Had a cracked screen on my older MacBook and brought it to Orramac at 5:30 pm on a Tuesday. It was ready before 10 am on Wednesday. Can't beat the price, either: $249. The screen is beautiful... and the guy who runs the store is super nice. Would recommend this place to anybody. Thanks to these guys, my MacBook Pro, after years and years of heavy usage which had caused the trackpad to become difficult to click, is working like new again! As it turned out, the problem lay not with the trackpad itself, as I originally suspected but with the fairly expensive battery (thanks Apple) which had become swollen thereby minimizing the space needed for clicking. Having been a Mac consultant and service technician myself in the early years of Macs, it was great being able to access their experience and expertise to diagnose and repair this problem. read more

This is the first time I've written a Yelp review, but I felt compelled to for Orramac. I dropped a hard drive and could not get my data off it. So I brought it over and they said they would see if they could recover it. Unfortunately they were not able to recover the data and explained that it has a mechanical problem. He did not charge me for the diagnosis since they couldn't fix it, which really impressed me. He provided me with information on where I could send it for repairs, but warned me that it would be expensive. It's an honest business. read more

My 13-month old (read: just out of warranty) HP laptop suddenly froze, then went blank. I took it to Staples EasyTech nearby; said the hard drive was gone and data lost and I would best just buy a new computer. A friend and colleague suggested I try Osama instead, saying "If anyone can get your data back, Osama can." And he did! Osama was patient, kind, and clearly competent. He confirmed the hard drive was fried, suggested I consider a solid state replacement ($100 more, but faster and more reliable), and then set about trying to recover the lost data. He did indeed recover the data (ALL of it!) and put it onto a zip drive so I could access the files on my old computer while the HP was being fixed. He said it would be ready the next day, and it was - and, as advertised, faster than ever. The charge for the hard drive replacement and data recovery was about half of what I would have paid for a replacement computer. Osama also patiently answered my questions about how to get back to full steam. Just 48 hours from near total panic to blissful status quo ante - but better! The earlier reviewer said it: Osama rocks. I've found my new tech support department for my small business and personal needs alike! My wife will have a place to bring her finicky Mac, as well. I love Orramac! I'll put it simply that I can drop off my iMac or my iPad (twice now, I'm a klutz), tell them what's wrong, and walk away knowing that I won't get screwed over. If I am not sure what is wrong, they generally know exactly what it is on the spot. I just brought my iPad 2 here for the second time - I dropped it and the screen went black and wouldn't display anything at all - he knew what it was, gave me a rough quote and two business days later, called me when it was fixed, told me exactly what was wrong and the price was the same although there was another issue that he had found when looking into the initial problem. The real value of Orramac is in the absolutely comfort that you have leaving your computer with them. I should also mention that I've never spent more that ten minutes in there and that was only because it took me a few extra minutes to take iMac out of the box. AMAZING! I was referred by another tech support company who couldn't help me with my problem. They replaced my harddrive 3 mos ago and then it died. They took forever replacing it (again) and when I got it back, it didnt boot up. So I had to bring it back. I had Vista and now have XP (?!) Also my sound doesnt work. They took forever to just reload a new OS and it was a lesser system. Plus, they acted like I was an annoyance calling for updates. read more

I have brought my apple laptop computer on two seperate occasions to orramac and have been very pleased with the service. I have found Osama to be very fair with repair costs and he is always helpful in answering all of my questions. In fact... I would have to say that he has gone above and beyond what I expected and even helped me extract some files from a busted hard drive pretty much free of charge so that I could avoid the total data recovery process. Osama, the owner, a mild-mannered gentleman, was very nice over the phone when I discovered by MacBook Pro was not running properly after an OS upgrade. I suspected it needed more RAM and was disappointed when the Apple Store told me they no longer serviced my 2010 laptop, that I had to obtain RAM from an independent source and probably install it myself. No way. All I can imagine is putting my computer back together and wondering what the leftover parts were for. To make a long story short, while I sipped on a cool bottle of water, Osama cracked open the Mac, replaced the RAM, and had the whole thing back together before I could finish a 10 oz bottle. His charge for the upgrade was $120 plus tax - just a bit more than the cost of the RAM alone. Now my machine is running beautifully again and I am overjoyed to have met this gentleman whose store is so close to where I live, and whose owner is genuinely nice and competent. read more

The worst service I ever had in my life :( I don't recommend it to anyone. Don't go here to fix your laptop or computer. I left my computer for diagnostic. When I came back they charged me first, then gave me my laptop. But...I was lucky to see the back side of my laptop. If I didn't do that at that moment he would have never admit that he swapped the back cover of my uni-body Mac Book Pro with some other one. So .. The back cover of my laptop had broken corners like it was dropped down to the floor. I was frustrated...I didn't know what to say to this man... I thought he dropped my laptop, so I told him: it's broken it wasn't like this. Mr Osama Shanaa told me it was like this. He didn't even said "sorry". He didn't want to listen to me.... I didn't know what to do...When he realized I won't leave, he turned back and brought my laptop's back cover and installed it. He said it was a mistake...WHAT???? How can you change covers on the client computer? How can I be sure he didn't change anything else on my computer??? And you know what? He told me why it matters for you if you not gonna fix this laptop anyway??? This is not a good business... If you don't want to have your computer mixed up with anyone else's computer's parts don't give them your machine. I wasted time and money. They didn't do anything and I am very lucky I saw this at their office. I am sure he would not have change the cover after I took my laptop home. read more

I dropped off my iMac for repair. I was told it was going to be two days. Over a week later and I just went and picked it up without it being repaired. I called to check on the status and the kid was super rude to me over the phone. I couldn't believe I was being talked to like that. If I spoke to a customer in the manner I was spoken to today I would have been fired. So I rushed over to get my Mac and the kid who was rude to me hide out in the back never showing his face. I told Osama how I was treated and he didn't seem like he cared one bit. This was the worst customer service I have experienced in a long time. Last year when my computer's hard drive became corrupt, I brought my computer to a well-known company and paid a considerable amount to have my computer repaired. Without going into the gory details, I ended filing a complaint with the BBB which I won. So, when the hard drive became corrupt again, I wasn't sure where to turn. I asked a co-worker who did a quick check on Yelp and found good references on Orramac. I can see why he got good references. He kept me well informed about the problem with my hard drive, made attempts to repair the hard drive so I wouldn't lose my stored data and was very reasonably priced. I kept thinking "too good to be true," but a month has past and my computer is working like brand new. I hope my hard drive will last longer this time, but if I have any problems with my computer, I know where I will take it to be repaired. read more

these guys are sweethearts. when my 2013 macbook pro retina died (aka couldn't boot up one day) (aka WTF, Apple? this laptop was 1 year old), i got on the phone with orramac to see if i should bring it in for a consult, after spending a couple hours with applecare the previous night (PRAM reset failed, disk partitioning failed, recognition of the drive failed). the guy i talked to kindly walked me through a range of common possibilities, gave me a very reasonable timeline (1-3 days) and projected price of repair/data restoration, and i took a drive over during my lunch break. orramac is formerly apple certified but not anymore (rumor has it due to their helping repair ipads and iphones, which was a big no-no according to apple -- not a retraction of certification due to a lack of quality work). this place was also recommended by tech superpowers, which is apple certified but now exclusively does contract work and no walk-ins. unlike computer loft (which is also apple certified), orramac promised a same-day free evaluation of my problem and unless they reached a resolution (in this case, data recovery prior to taking it to the Apple store or an Apple-certified repair center for hardware/software work). computer loft refused to give any information on the phone, and suggested a 3 day to 1 week turnaround and a much higher data recovery price. long story short, orramac unfortunately diagnosed that the solid state hard drive was fried (WTF, apple?), that this is not the first time they've seen it, and that i were to go to the apple store or computer loft for data recovery (if they could do it -- orramac could not due to not having specialized hardware to access the hard drive, but also said that even with the hardware, potential of data recovery was slim in my case). i was charged nothing. i was also charged nothing when i asked to retrieve items from my time machine backup onto a USB flash drive. god forbid i have another apple problem requiring data recovery (i will back up my files much more often now!), but if i needed them again, orramac will be my go-to source! see my upcoming review of computer loft for my opinion of them. in short, go to orramac, or if you're under apple care, just go to the apple store. read more

I got to work last Tuesday, pulled my HP Pavillion 9000 out of its carry case and opened the lid only to hear crunching noises and bits of shredded plastic and metal coming from the hinge. A telephone call to India and one hour later, the bad news from the formerly great company known as "HP" was that it was going to cost me $400 to fix. No way, and this was after a recall had ended on a very poorly designed part. I brought it to Orrmac and the owner took a look. He said he could get the parts overnight and have it fixed by the end of the next day. Great I said. I dropped it off at 4:30 pm on Thursday, as I needed it for work. I got a call Friday morning at 10:30 am, and it was fixed. The hinge is brand spanking new and works beautifully, and the cost was about half what HP was going to charge me and take up to 10 business days!. Needless to say this has become my new PC repair place. The owner was pleasant and extremely helpful. The only other thing they could have done to improve their service would be to serve espresso. read more

I've dealt with Orramac and its owner, Osama, three times, and each has been a joy. Once, he didn't charge me because, after running all the diagnostics, he didn't find a problem. He suggested just taking the machine home, seeing how it ran and bringing it back if the problem resurfaced, which it never did. Another time, he suggested a solution to a hardware problem that was much cheaper than the one I'd been considering. I've been bringing my Mac computers to Orramac for the last 15 years and so has my partner. I know as well that Orromac is the go-to place for TERC (that's Technical Education Resource Center) in Cambridge. Every experience I have had with Osama (owner) has been great. I've never "learned my lesson" about backing up my computer, mostly because I've never lost data--Osama always manages to recover my hard drive whether my computer has just "died" naturally or I've spilled water on it. Because I work at home as a copyeditor, when my computer is down, I can't work. Osama gets my computer back to me quickly and even lent me one when I was in a state of emergency to get some work turned around. I wouldn't think of going anywhere except here and give Orramac the highest recommendation. read more

I def won't be going to the Genius Bar anymore - had an awesome experience at Orramac. My Macbook pro is a few years old and was running horribly slow - and the files were a mess. Aaron carefully listened to my concerns and was committed to helping me putting in enough money to get it running well - but not too much, as I plan to get a new desktop soon. They are actually located around the block from me and after I saw the Yelp reviews, I thought I should give them a try. I highly recommend them, my laptop is working really well and Aaron even reorganized files/programs to ensure better efficiency and organization. My husband brought his laptop in here a few months ago to get recovered data moved to his new laptop. It was done quickly by the really friendly guy. Today, we took my laptop in. The owner looked at it and told me if I wanted his honest opinion, it was a better idea to buy a new laptop instead of fixing this one. If, as one of the below negative review suggested, they were trying to fleece people for lovey, he could easily have suggested I get it fixed, and then in a few months I probably would've been bringing it in again. He didn't even charge us a diagnostic fee and instead told us to bring in a new laptop or external hard drive and we would pay the normal fee for data recovery (and by the way, to the person that was offended by the cost, their sign - and website - clearly state the minimum diagnosis fee is $50. If you can read, you should not be surprised that you would pay this fee as well as the actual service fee). The friendly customer service and straightforward attitude will make this our go-to computer place from now on. read more

My son spilled liquid in my Macbook Pro, and I ended up trying Orramac after taking it to another repair provider who quoted me an incredibly high price to fix it, saying I needed to replace a number of parts and it would take a week to repair. Orramac was able to clean most of the parts and returned the machine to me in great working order in two days, saving me well over half of what I was going to have to pay at the other repair provider. Here's my experience with Orramac. My Mac died so I took it there--it's close and I wanted to support a local business. The woman at the counter was not at all friendly, didn't want to engage in any discussion at all. Practically no customer service attitude. I asked them to call with an estimate. Later in the day, they called and said it was ready to be picked up. Cost: $95. I guess they thought that since the minimum charge was $50, they didn't need to call about the extra $45. When I picked it up, the guy volunteered no information about what they did. I had to ask and he said he ran the utility. There was a sticky on the machine saying the disk that was in the machine was still there. Well, it wasn't. Maybe they're not interested in business from individuals users. I couldn't recommend them. Sorry. They did fix the problem but the overall experience was not positive. They can keep the disk. BTW, the review of 6/28/08 sounds more like an advertisement. Honestly, I'd like to see more reviews here, for comparison. If you used this place, post something. read more

I have brought my computer to Orramac twice and came away happy both times. The first time I had some structural damage to the outside, which the owner Osama made some quick fixes with a screw driver. The 2nd time I had a more serious problem: my computer would not start and was having some graphic image problems. Osama kept my computer overnight to run some tests on it. I got a call the next day that the problem was with the graphics card, and he said it was a known problem by Apple on my particular computer model and they were supposed to fix it if it malfunctioned. He put in a request with Apple, which was rejected for some reason. So he suggested I bring my computer to an Apple store and explain the situation. He did not charge me, I think because Apple admitted the defect. The biggest thing I took away from my experiences at Orramac is that you will get a fair and honest diagnosis of your computers problem, and not have to worry about being charged just for the hell of it. I completely trust these guys and I would take my computer here again any time I have a problem. read more
