They have an abundance of well trained professionals. Alaska is a place to be for orthopedic care. I have seen a variety of providers there, they all seemed to be knowledgeable and skilled, most were kind and patient. I generally have lots of questions about injuries and procedures and expected recovery times, and for the most part everyone has been kind to help me understand what there was to expect. Today I saw Dr Eric Moore, oops lol. Let's just say he was not appreciative of my many questions. I felt he was a bit dismissive, rushed and perhaps rude. To be fair, some of my questions were questions he said he didn't want to answer, like how many of these procedures do you usually do, and what is your success rate. Looking at his profile, I can understand how he may have taken this as a challenge. I see how this may have come across as rude on my part, seeing that he is relatively young in the field. read more

OPA has been pretty great to me. Dr Patricia Fox is lovely. She's smart, she's kind, she has a charming southern-tinged accent, and a great bedside manner. She's great at explaining to me what's going on every step of the way. I fractured a shoulder and a wrist back in May and she has made this painful and complex process simple and comfortable. Why not 5 stars? The company that handles the X-rays in here is unethnical. They'll send you to collections over the drop of a hat. I had a bill for like $30 that I wasn't aware of....it was about 16 days old and I got a letter from collections about it. They have since apologized and corrected the issue but...Ih have many more X-ray's and CT's in my future, so I won't up the rating until I get through all of those without additional nasty-grams from collections. read more

We're pretty limited with specialists in Alaska, luckily OPA's been good to us thus far. They're pretty centrally located across from north rim bank on lake Otis. Their parking is limited for such a huge building with large staff. That's a definite complaint but not a deal breaker. Most of the staff we've encountered have been ultra helpful, welcoming, and most importantly, knowledgeable. Some appointments have felt very "assembly line," but for the most part, any concerns we've brought up seem to be received well. X-rays are completed each appointment we've had. Equipment and medical room areas always look clean and professional. We especially appreciate their walk in injury clinics. Very convenient. Staff encountered working those special hours have been efficient and patient. We look forward to continuing our care here. read more

I went to the hand surgeon for an elbow issue. I guess when you get that far from the trouble spot all assistance is lost. It took forever to get in as he wa running behind. I was seen long enough to decsribe the issue and sent on my way to get another appointment for tests. after tests the same thing, he was running behind, seen me for two minutes to explain he didn't see anything in the tests but please come back and spend more time effort, money if the pain persists. It has so I'm looking to go to seattle in the spring. read more

Would not recommend. The physician assistant was running over 30 minutes late. When I said I would need to reschedule, her MA would not listen to the days/times I was available and just picked one. I am not available the day he picked. I have called and talked to someone 3 times. Each person said they would be sure to call back so we could figure out an appointment time. My visit To OPA was extremely pleasant . The large , nicely decorated and comfortable waiting area was full but didn't feel at all crowded . I didn't have to wait to check in and as soon as I had finished filling out their computerized forms My name was called and I was led to Kylie Streets' examination room . The gentleman who had summoned me took my blood pressure . He was considerate , friendly and bright . Almost as soon as he left Kylie Street came in . She listened intently as I told her why I had come to see her . In just a few minutes I knew I was in excellent hands . I should mention Kylie is a foot specialist . The provider I saw about my back pain told me that "all fat people have back problems" (untrue), didn't even bother to ask if I'd had an injury (I had), and just generally treated me appallingly because of my weight. First off, I'd like to say the administrative staff was extremely helpful and provided amazing service. The scheduler(s) and MAs with whom I dealt were also great. My negative experience is specifically with the PAs and Surgeon I had. They would not take more than 10 minutes with me per visit. Very inconsistent information regarding my conditions. I was told different things at each visit (even with the same doctor). I went through, what I have since found out, were two very unnecessary surgeries. I kept having to be treated for new tears in each meniscus after each surgery. I was so upset that things were getting worse not better. The doctor completely dismissed and invalidated me. I asked if we could get to root cause of why the issue kept happening and his response was "root cause? I don't know what you mean" and sounded very annoyed. I asked to be referred to Rheumatology for other reasons and he said fine. Ordered labs and after those came back, he refused to review them with me. Suggested I see my Primary Care Doc or Oncologyst. I found out that the ordering physician (per Rheumatology) is 100% responsible for reviewing the labs. At that point, I had had enough. My opinion is that this surgeon, who is part owner of the surgery center, only cared about performing surgeries- after all that's where the money is. I'm still extremely angry with how I was treated. It seems OPA is too big to provide professional, competent, service and care. Since leaving OPA, I have been told by my new surgeon, with a different practice, that he would have NEVER had performed those surgeries. That the issue that was causing things to deteriorate/tear was only going to be fixed by replacement. And that the surgeries only made things worse, which was confirmed through updated imaging. I'm very happy to finally have someone who took interest in my case and is compassionate and thorough. will never recommend OPA to anyone, especially, Dr Payntor. I can't speak more highly of OPA! My partner got hurt right before Christmas. There went all of our plans down the tubes. From then til now he's been sent from this NP, to get an MRI, in physical therapy with no real answers to his injury. All we know is he is in excruciating pain and can hardly walk. Finally we get a referral to Dr Sean Taylor. I am so glad we did! He took the time to do a THOROUGH examination. He asked a lot of questions. He checked out range of motion. He even gave a tentative diagnosis of sacroiliitis pending on review of X Rays. He was very explanatory, answered all of our questions and took his time. All I can say is we feel better at least having an idea of what is possibly wrong. It's been well over a month and to have a general direction to go when before we really knew nothing is a relief. extremely upset about their lack of management of my partner's pain after his surgery. They gave him 5 days worth of Vicodin and expected him to just be okay slamming tylenol after that. He's been on almost the maximum dose of tylenol since his accident 5 weeks ago. They pretend to care about you getting addicted to Vicodin (I assume that's why they withheld pain management) but don't seem to care at all about you destroying your liver? This is why we developed pain medication--FOR THIS EXACT REASON. Don't go here unless you love tylenol and have a good tolerance to pain. read more

The people on the phones are rude I was hung up on twice and the receptionist flat out told me they wouldn't let the dr know I was trying to reach him and that they wouldn't help me. I was shocked at how I've been treated here. Not to mention I got an mri and they never contacted me to follow up on my torn meniscus then when I called and came in they didn't even have the images just a summary. I'm now unable to get around and have unbearable pain and am swollen thigh to toes. This place only wants your money they don't give two shits about the people they are mistreating. So far I have not been pleased with how my care has been handled. I'm super frustrated with the slow pace and poor communication and planning of my care. I've had one appointment and several phone calls over the past 2 weeks and still no plan of care, meanwhile I'm out of work, injured and I'm in pain. They scheduled me asap to a doctor on the premises, doctor Haughom who again was prompt and to point. He immediately got me referred to an another specialist who handles my type of issue. I was referred to a well-known OPA physician by my primary care doctor, but rather than wait for him to return from vacation, I took an earlier appointment with Dr. Fox. He entered the room with a resident in tow, telling me, rather than asking me if I was fine with the other man being there. He quickly looked at my x-rays, stopped to look at his ringing cell phone, then gave a brief description of my condition. Having never seen an x-ray of my ankle, I naturally had questions. Dr. Fox was not interested in answering them, cutting me off with, "I believe I already went over this." My specific medical questions related to my pain and treatment were brushed over. It was clear that my need for clarity on a few points was irritating to Dr. Fox. I even asked him if he had somewhere to be because I felt so rushed. He sighed, then went to prepare the shot I would receive with his henchman. Rather than address me as he injected a needle into my ankle, he coached the intern, "You'll know just when you hit the injection site..." I was astounded. I felt like a used car being worked on by a greasy mechanic and some kid. The real sting came when received the bill, which was over $600 for a 15-minute visit, and included a $325 cost just to walk in the door. This is with insurance. I called to discuss my unpleasant experience with Dr. Fox with someone...anyone, and the person answering the phone REFUSED to provide me with a name or email address. I described the shabby treatment I had received and heard nothing back. The next thing I received was another copy of the bill followed by a phone call from someone who described herself as "the lowest man on the totem pole" (WHAT?) telling me I could have 20 percent off if I paid in full immediately. Basically - make the problem go away. After I paid she was more than willing to give me the name of the clinical manager because who cares...she paid, right?!! Every single stereotype of Orthopedic Surgeons using their patients as a means to get rich was borne out by Dr. Fox. I don't need some floppy haired frat boy cutting me off when I have real concerns about my health. Awful all around. read more

I can't recommend this clinic either. Seldom the person you need to speak to is available. Nor do they return phone calls in any matter, least of all timely. Procedures are canceled with no notice to the patient. When a request is made for assistance with pain the response is "we don't do pain management". If you have the temerity to question one of the "professionals" somehow the problem is the patient's fault. Unlike customer service, here the patient is always wrong. -5 stars. read more

This review is for Alpine Surgery Center. My advice: Seek competing bids from other facilities (AK Regional, Providence) BEFORE letting your OPA doctor/staff steer you to Alpine. They do this because OPA doctors own the center. Its a ca$h cow for them but operates as an entirely different business entity. Alpine is where most of the famed Alaska Medical Price Gouging takes place. Granted, paperwork is involved with nearly all medical procedures but Alpine takes it to an entirely different level. They shoved an inordinate amount of forms in my face (some, quite lengthy) immediately before the procedure. Could have been accomplished when I pre-registered. Obviously taking advantage of patient vulnerability greased the skids in their CYA-all-on-you signature blocks. I asked a few questions about some of the items. NONE of the staff could provide answers. In fact, the staff, shoving those clipboards in my face were unfamiliar with most everything contained on those forms - with the exception of heading and signature blocks. For example: If you were to suffer any complications Alpine won't do anything other than attempt to stabilize. You'll be transported to a hospital. One of the forms you sign absolves them if anything happens while you're being transported. That's two of the more egregious examples of all the rights you're signing away if they screw up. Never mind they're charging 2X what this procedure would cost virtually anywhere else on the planet. I DO NOT recommend the Alpine Surgery Center. Know before you go. Get other bids. Negotiate. (NOTE: Had same procedure, at another facility providing good template of what to expect and compare.) read more

Six weeks later and after multiple calls to his assistant he stated that he wouldn't provide the statement and that I should request that statement from a primary care provider. It has been almost 2 years since my TKR and I feel I am ready to write this. If you are considering a TKR DO NOT GO HERE. OPA IS a "drive thru" type of replacement center and you will NOT get the care you need if ANYTHING goes awry. Aside from having- at the most 3-day care, and trust me, they will kick you out regardless after 3 days, you are screwed if you are in pain and need REAL drugs. My health insurance: would not cover the full cost of their "lovely" Alpenglow recovery center. That should have been my first clue. There is very little known about continued pain after TKR which studies in the UK have shown encompass 20% of TKR patients. Do yourself a favor and go to a REAL hospital with REAL nurses and REAL drugs in case there are any complications. I cannot express enough how highly Dr. Powell was recommended, but in the long run, he was a total arrogant jerk and his staff reflected this from the top down with their nasty attitudes when I did not recover as I should in their own minds. I was referred to OPA by my Dr for my hand due to pain. I was told to come early even after completing the new patient forms on the computer. I showed up & sat in the waiting room & waited & waited.. Finally the nurse (Ava) called for me who lacked a personality to go to the patient's room. I waited for the Dr who then comes in & asked do we have X-rays I said yes I gave them to your nurse we'll he couldn't pull them up in the computer so he left.. he finally comes back after 25+ minutes talks to me & the 1st thing he suggests is surgery!! I'm sure he could tell with my mask on my eyes were not happy! I said No I don't want to have surgery isn't there other options? Then Dr Ala suggested medicine, & I was fine with that. I asked the nurse to call it in for 90 days due to insurance, I checked my mail & it was called in wrong. I called the office & the nurse I spoke too said he called it in for 30 days & you have refills, I said I would like that changed & I could here I. Her tone she wasn't happy. So spending about 10 minutes with the Dr. I spent 2 hours waiting a long time to be seen! I don't feel they value their customers. I will say the person who checked me in named Stephan was very professional & helpful. I'll be looking for another Dr for my hand issue! read more

I leave this review with a heavy heart. I was referred to OPA after an on the job injury. I waited for an appointment which I was unable to get in in the time frame of the referral. I had all my forms that is a requirement for an injury. Seven days later my forms still had not been completed which held up my injury claim. I went and pick up the forms to get them submitted along with a letter from DOL. needless to say the forms were not filled out correctly nor did they indicate a diagnosis which added further complications to my claim. I am still waiting to seek the care and treatment to my injuries. I feel that I did not receive adequate treatment at all from the establishment. Dr. Ala and his staff are great! I was living in severe pain for 5 months, after a car accident, with Juneau doctors telling me nothing was broken. I sought out OPA. Met with Dr. Ala. Did a MRI in house which is awesome! Found out my wrist was shattered! My pain was so high my blood pressure was stroke or heart attack high 228/168! OPA got me into surgery the next day. I am all healed up and back to work! I have nothing but great things to say about OPA and it's staff! read more

If you can get an appointment here, it is definitely worth the wait! Dr. Ragle is in high demand but I was able to take a cancellation slot, thanks to their wonderful medical assistant Julie. Her communication is excellent-- she follows up and is very proactive. The front desk staff was helpful and they had a streamlined electronic registration. Dr. Ragle's CNA Lori was friendly and made sure I was comfortable before the doctor arrived. Dr. Ragle is highly knowledgeable, was obviously well read on my medical history and communicated very clearly throughout the appointment. I felt listened to and- wow- a doctor with a sense of humor (rare finding in bedside manner). They made sure the appropriate prescriptions were faxed to my pharmacy and orders placed at my home medical facilities. This office rocks and I am incredibly grateful for their excellent customer service (I cannot say the same for previous rheumatology offices I have used). I was referred to OPA for a hand pain and was seen in Soldotna by Christine Waters. After x-rays, I saw her at the office May 2021) where she diagnosed trigger thumb and suggested an injection to the area to relieve swelling. This did nothing for the pain. The pain has continued to worsen and I have been losing more function. I asked for a referral to a local hand surgeon who ordered x rays and diagnosed bone on bone arthritis. No amount of shots will make this feel better. I am sorry that my insurance had to pay OPA and I had to pay my portion for something that should have been seen 5 months ago on an x ray. read more

There's nothing like getting sent home after hip replacement surgery with nothing but aspirin recommended as a pain killer. Then when you call asking for actual pain medication, and call, and call you hear nothing until you state the next hip will be done by a different doctor. Oops. You still hear nothing but Dr. Thomas then calls....the "man of the family" to ask about the plan to change doctors. Yeah. Hip #2 surgery was inexplicably cancelled for 2 months. The office staff were very nice, but if Dr. Thomas's only concern is whether we're switching doctors and to make sure the family's womenfolk don't call, then we are certainly happy to oblige. read more

This review is specific to rheumatologist Dr. Ryan Ragle. I was referred to Dr. Ragle by my primary care physician due to my posetive ANA test and elevated dsDNA antibodies; those results in combination with my symptoms suggest a rheumatic autoimmune disease. After a three month wait, I finally had my appointment. Dr. Ragle spent 10 minutes explaining why my test results were almost certainly false positives. He also explained why lupus is such a difficult disease for a doctor to treat due to the lack of an objective means for tracking symptoms. "It's not like rheumatoid arthritis where I can count the number of joints that are swollen." Point taken, severe fatigue is merely the patient's opinion, not something a doctor can evaluate objectively. With that, he left and his assistant came in to collect samples. She missed the vein in my arm twice. On try three she went all of the way through the vein. Only one or two tubes were collected before my vein collapsed. She wasn't able to get blood from my other arm, and started working getting the needle into a vein in my hand. It was far more painful than I anticipated and I put a stop to it and requested my orders be sent to the diagnostic company for one of their phlebotomists to draw. The assistant accused me of being dehydrated. Well, she had my urine sample and it did not suggest dehydration. Lesson learned, avoid having your blood drawn here. You can and should request that your orders go to a competant phlebotomist. The diagnostic company had, as always, zero problems collecting samples from me. When my labs came back, they were contradictory. The doctor stated that my test results were clinically insignificant. I was told I could come back in for monitoring and additional tests in 6 more months. Thank you for the opinion; that was what I paid for; and for it, I gave you a single star for meeting that basic contractual obligation. As a chemist my opinion is that the results were clinically significant, but what they are significant of is unclear. To conclude, in lupus discussions it's a common meme. Any doctor can diagnose lupus when a butterfly rash and sky high anti nuclear antibodies stare him in the face. It takes a far more savvy doctor to help a patient with a more ambiguous symptom profile. Please know if you have a slam dunk case for a rheumatic condition you might have a better experience than I did. read more

I collapsed my arch in my foot last spring, tore my knee and needed some serious repair. I was referred to Dr. Chang at OPA from Anchorage Orthopedics because I needed more specialized treatment than they could offer. Dr. Chang has a positive attitude and caring demeanor, as well as very concise when giving instructions or asking questions. I really liked the fact that he wanted to exhaust all other options before recommending surgery. That fact alone shows that he cares about the patient not just the paycheck. Lets face it...surgery and recovery are something nobody wants to go through, but Chang does a great job of helping you make educated decisions and making you feel assured and comfortable. There is also an excellent onsite rehabilitation center where I recieved fantastic treatment. Matt is physical therapist at the facility that really knows his craft. He was able to quickly identify and start treatment for the numerous points of pain associated with this type of surgery, as well as get me back up and walking. I highly recommend this facility! My over all experience here has been great! My appointments with Chang were always on time with no excessive waiting. My treatments with Matt were planned well ahead and around my busy schedule. The entire facility is staffed by friendly caring professionals that actually seem to care about the job they do. read more

If I could give minus stars, I would. I feel what I had on my second visit here was egregious mistreatment! When I gave them the chance to "fix" my complaint, I was lied to and experienced a charade that made matters worse. I am living with ongoing pain far worse than what I went in with. Wish I had a video of their "coverup" appointment actions and had heard all the whispering that went on. It is because I had the proper treatment the first time that I knew without a doubt that the same procedure was not done the second time. I will start out with the positives. We were able to get in and the care my son received was pretty decent and timely, unlike some of the other reviews I have read. The part that created the single star rating is the insane price gouging I experienced at their hands. I was charged $3000.00 dollars for less than 30 minutes worth of doctor contact time. Six years ago my daughter had surgery for a dislocated patella (kneecap) in a horseback riding accident. Four years ago she had a second surgery to remove scar tissue. She recently re-injured the same knee and was seen by Christopher J. Manion. In pain and broken, she arrived at OPA wearing a knee brace and on crutches, to discuss the results of her MRI. I can only describe Dr. Manion as "oozing " with toxic masculinity; he was arrogant, condescending and even caustic. You see... it's in Mannion's "professional opinion" that the only reason my daughter's knee was dislocating as it was - is because she was a "woman". (According to Manion, women's knees are naturally weaker than men's, because their hips are designed for childbirth). Despite her ytwo previous surgeries, he never once looked through her 3D MRI to explain the scan or talk to her about it. He simply left the image fixed on the screen and refused to discuss WHY her knee was hurting, He simply stated again and again that women's knees "do this" and there's no surgical procedure that can help her. Please, please, PLEASE! Stay far away from this doctor! read more

I've heard medical costs in Anchorage are higher than Silicon Valley. With that in mind I am still in shock about the bill. Additionally, it seems pretty clear I was being milked for money. Since I don't currently have insurance that covers this, I pay attention. I spent very little time with a PA, was told to come back and do very expensive physical therapy. I was seen in the ER in Seward and referred to OPA in Anchorage for a serious infection/abscess in my finger, upon arrival at OPA I was sent back into a room and waited and waited and waited for an incredibly rude and condescending PA who did not listen to me at all and refused to let me see an actual doctor. The PA left the room and claimed to have spoken with a doctor and informed me that people do not get abscesses on the palmar surface of a finger, I should continue taking antibiotics, and be seen again in 5 days. Two days later my finger was twice the normal size, I was in incredible pain and the pain was radiating throughout my entire left arm, at this point I drove back to Anchorage and went directly to the ER at Providence (best ER visit I have ever had or been witness to) the Dr. at Providence who was very concerned, I was then referred to the office of Dr. Jensen who removed the abscess and cultured it. I had a serious staph infection (for which I had been prescribed the wrong antibiotics) and the abscess was almost to the bone, given another day or two I could have lost the finger, hand or worse. So in conclusion if you have a serious injury, infection, or otherwise you would do well to avoid OPA they might ignore you and make your situation worse and potentially life threatening like mine. read more

My dad broke his hand on a recent fishing trip and this was the first place that could see him. Utmost care was taken, along with xrays and surgery scheduled. Surgery was completed two days later at Alpine Surgery Center which is located down on the 1st floor. I have to say, even though dad is on Medicare (and Medicare doesn't pay well) the staff treated him with the utmost trespect and care. I am writing this review as a five star despite the fact that I did not see my Doctor until about 45 minutes after my appointment time, despite me being early and prepared. I actually view this as a good sign, even if it is frustrating in the moment. I feel it means the Doctor is concerned and careful and willing to take time, even if it means he runs a bit behind schedule. This was certainly the case with me. Dr. Moore was careful and I did not feel rushed. He explained all my options and he saw me as soon as I was back in town after having injured myself. The competition, Anchorage Fracture and Orthapedic, took NINE days to get a simple diagnosis of my torn meniscus. I like my odds with Dr. Moore at OPA. The physicians and staff treat with the utmost care and professionalism. I'm very pleased with the amount of care OPA provides to me as a customer. My insurance company changed it's policy/procedures which caused for me to have to change my payment method after each appointment. The staff made sure I was aware of this change ahead of time and explained to me how the changes would affect my copay and such. Hats off to OPA! read more
