I visited the OrthoVirginia in Fairfax to try and alleviate my chronic back pain. I saw Dr. Adam Wegner, and every time I saw him, I felt rushed and he would only spend max 5 minutes with me before referring me out. The referral was fine since I didn't need surgery, but I never felt listened to in my appts. I told him multiple times my thoracic and lumbar spine was where the pain was. He ordered an MRI but ONLY for my lumbar spine. Now I need to go and get another MRI for my thoracic spine so the National Spine Institute can treat me properly. read more

I've done orthopedic rehabilitation/ physical therapy and occupational therapy at OrthoVirginia over the past couple years and I wanted to share that my experiences have all been excellent. The quality of the care provided by Lars , Katie and all the therapy providers was top notch. They care and I made rapid progress in my rehabilitation for both hips, my neck, and my hand. The facility is clean, well lit, and has a positive energy to it. I honestly know from my experience. I don't trust them anymore. I have pain like I've never had before In my life. I wish I never had these knee replacements. I am making one more visit before I go to medstar . Bone spurs growing on my left knee. Right knee replacement is out of this world pain . I cannot walk hardly at all . My right foot is pointing to the right instead of straight. I cannot kneel or get up off the floor . I am disabled for life. I could atleast walk before . Now I have worse pain and cannot walk without pain. They seem to be more interested in a copay then my knees. I am on a crusaide to tell as many people as I can to think twice. I see so many people hurting from this procedure. Must be something I can do. My life has been taken and they keep calling me back to just take more money I don't have. I've visited doctors at OrthoVirginia before and my experience has been seamless. My recent visit was the most unprofessional experience I've ever had with a medical provider. I was being examined by a Dr. Martinelli for pain in my left shoulder. As part of our initial conversation, I told Dr. Martinelli that certain movements and touching certain areas made me gasp in pain. The doctor started probing areas on and around my shoulder. He got to a sensitive area that hurt and I reached up with my left hand to touch his, letting him know that it hurt. To be clear, I simply touched the back of his hand, reacting like any human being would react when feeling pain. Dr. Martinelli SLAPPED my hand away and said, "Don't you grab me." I was stunned--he's a medical "professional" and this was his response? I was quiet and then apologized (upon reflection, I shouldn't have) for touching his hand. He apologized for slapping my hand and then said something bizarre--"I grew up in the inner city." What did he mean by that? I have my suspicions but don't want to open that can of worms. As I was checking out, I did something I've never done before. I asked to speak with the office manager to share my experience. If Dr. Martinelli represents the care providers at OrthoVirginia, I cannot recommend them for your medical needs. read more

They will not give you an estimate of what the price will be ahead of time and tell you to go to the insurance company. In general I have seen five doctors (in two cities), and have always left feeling that my aging, aching joints were of ZERO interest to the doctors there. The service I received was fine the problem is the billing department. No matter how may times I speak to the Billing department they are not filing with my insurance. They keep sending me my bill with out processing my insurance. My insurance company even called them and left them a message. I made sure my name was spelled right and all my info was correct. They sent me a generic email and I found a contact email that a person can use to complain and I did that and still no response. Very stressful situation... Now I am having to make a report to the BBB and tract down someone from their administration department. I am going to have to call them again and ask for an itemized bill, etc... I can't believe my inservice company even called them to walk them through how to build my insurance...(it was a 3 way call...I was on the line) and still they have not done anything... I am writing this review regarding my office experience in hopes that someone at Ortho Virginia monitors this. I have asked for a detailed receipt for my 9/17 visit 3, maybe 4, times. Not only have I waited on hold for over 10 minutes on my third call, I still haven't been able to get the receipt by email or from the USPS. There is zero sense of urgency, and I have been more than kind and patient. Terrible practice! I've been there 3-4 times and observed the same pattern each time. Patients are either scheduled for the same time slot or scheduled in 10 minute intervals from each other, so doctors are always running behind and have to work with one foot in and one out of the door. In the 40 minutes (past my scheduled appointment) that I sat waiting, 4 patients were called in and came out from seeing the same doctor I was there to see --how can doctors truly help a patient in that short of a time? They have scribes that come into the room with the doctor to take notes and expedite the already speedy appointment --no consent required, and no privacy available to the patient. In all my visits there, I felt rushed, distracted by the additional people in the room, uncomfortable, and (in this last visit) confused when they all left the room without so much an indication that the appointment was over. No "have a nice day," no "please schedule a follow up [in so many weeks]," nothing. I had do leave the room and ask if I was okay to go, or if they had any paperwork for me to take. Very unprofessional, and dismissive. I will not be coming back, and would not recommend anyone else to go there. read more

Terrible service. Went in to get my 5 year olds cast replaced because he accidentally got it soaked in the shower. He's never had a cast on or removed before so this is all new to him. The technician was rude to my child because he was afraid of the cast cutter, which is understandable because he's freshly 5 years old. My son started crying and the technician told my 5 year old "I don't have time for your crying, I have other things to do" and then turned to me and said, "you can come find me when he's done". He came back and cut off the cast and placed a new one. The new cast was rushed and done very sloppily. There were sharp edges poking my child's fingers everywhere and it was overall a terrible job. I will never go to this location again. If choosing orthovirginia I would highly recommend the Alexandria location on Bellenger Ave, or the Tysons location. read more

Can't believe the lack of professionalism I received from the managers here . Lack of being efficient , understanding and just experience . It's important for a patient to walk out feeling like she / he was understood and of-course receiving that exceptional customer service . Why are you the manager in the first place ... if you can't reassure your staff is providing any of that to patients . My experience with the doctors were good but staff /billing / managers- horrible . You'll leave thinking everything is fine and then you'll receive a bill in the mail months later . You'll never receive a call from a manager indicating reasoning, etc and when you do .. WAIST OF YOUR TIME ! They will rip you off and say you owe them more than the worth of the brace you received . The staff at the location don't measure correctly when providing the brace and they don't communicate with one another to finalize . You'll have to explain yourself over and over . If your looking to receive a bill in the mail several months after your visit - this is the place for you . I have met some solid doctors at Ortho VA and of the four of them, Dr. Michael Antonis is among the best orthopedic I have ever seen. Truly some great talent there, and both OT and PT experiences were positive......but as a business and from a customer service perspective, they are seriously lacking professionalism and customer care. I have waited way too long past my scheduled appointment time on too many occasions and I just went to my 2nd appointment for an MRI to find out that ORTHOVA mistakes meant my morning off of work was wasted. I can't say enough good stuff about this place. A while back, I had messed my shoulder up so that it had all the movement of the Tin Man's before the oil. Well, within just a few weeks, I was getting remarkable results. I also was lucky to work with several different therapist at this location, and I can say that they are professional and exceptional. I almost have full movement of my shoulder again, and I am even sleeping better thanks to my therapy. This place is a real life saver. read more

I am surprised by the number of positive reviews for both this practice and for Dr. Kevin Lutta. After a four-month saga my husband endured, we both recommend people steer FAR clear of this practice and Dr. Lutta. My husband, a healthy male in his 30s, went in to have heel pain assessed in summer of 2021 and was diagnosed with a cyst in his heel bone. Dr. Lutta was recommended to him and he was scheduled for a surgery to have the cyst removed and bone graft inserted in August. This fairly simple procedure was offered as a conventional solution to his pain with about a six-week healing timeframe. From the get-go, it was a nightmare. His nerve pain that was an issue prior to his surgery (and that he explained to Dr. Lutta during his consultation) wasn't managed, resulting in an ER visit on his first night after the surgery. Trying to get a callback from Dr. Lutta's emergency line was stressful with my husband wailing in the background at 3 AM. When he did call back, we were informed that he must have a low pain tolerance. In fact, it took three additional doses of opioids on top of his Percocet, including a dose of fentanyl, to get his pain under control.... Pain that could have easily been managed by ibproufen, which Dr. Lutta so thoughtlessly prescribed after the ER visit. Two weeks later, after good progress and weaning off of painkillers, he was experiencing intense pain and had to return to his painkillers. The office showed NO urgency in getting him in despite these warning signs and scheduled him for two days later. I had to call the office and fight for a next day appointment. Turns out he had developed an infection. It was very obvious to the PA we saw. They ran tests and yet they sent him home with a broad-spectrum antibiotic. We were again scheduled to see Dr. Lutta days a couple days later. By that time, my husband was physically ill, feverish, and in pain. Dr. Lutta stated the obvious "he has an infection," and tried to send him home again. Again, I had to fight the staff on this and Lutta finally agreed with me I should take him to the ER. He was admitted for 6 days for his infection and finally we got another infectious disease doctor onboard for his care. He also needed a second surgery. His infection that was blatantly ignored (after a BONE SURGERY) resulted in not only all this, but another six weeks of home care, a PICC line to deliver his IV antibiotics, additional ER visits, and thousands of dollars in additional bills to get him well again. We are incredibly lucky that he is still here and just now healthy with a CLOSED wound site as of this month. An infection after bone surgery is nothing to fool around with and Ortho Virginia completely disregarded our concerns at every intersection of this process. We filed a complaint with the office, but of course, never heard back. Countless times, in the office, we have had to remind staff to wear gloves and wash hands prior to handling my husband's wound care because of the active infection he experienced. In fact, at his level of heightened complications, I'm not even sure why Ortho Virginia would have Med techs involved in his care at any level. I would RUN from this practice. It seems that if your issue is cut and dry without any complications, maybe your experience ends up being fine or even good, but we kept hearing how rare my husband's conditions were and my response to that is: rare does not mean it's not happening and it took a lot of kicking and screaming to get someone in that office to really listen and not dismiss what was going on with him. We are incredibly lucky he has made a full recovery and we will ensure that we, our family, and our friends NEVER visit this office for Orthopedic care. read more

If you are late or in a financial bind they will sell your debt to a lawyer that will sue you multiple times to collect the money along with $.57/day in interest. I have had a good experience with Dr. Daniel Thompson. I recently had an injury and saw Dr. Thompson for an examination. He was pleasant and communicated very well, and easily, what the situation was and what my options were. I really appreciated his effort in talking in basic terms. After an initial diagnosis and option, I decided on a less invasive option. That option worked but then later, it was clear surgery was the direction I needed to go. But that was my decision. Before surgery the entire OrthoVA team explained everything. I did appreciate pre-approved phone calls for insurance coverage and out of pocket expenses well before the procedure. Surgery and post surgery experiences were great. Dr. Thompson showed pictures of the surgery and explained everything, again in basic terms, so I could understand and make sound decisions. Awful place, the doctors here are poor and they have no idea what they are doing. I went here on several different occasions after my hand swelled up out of nowhere. This was back in April 2021 when I believe I had my first visit, I was treated by Dr. Tiffany Pan. The doctor put me on prednisone (a bad drug) and called it a zip-pack, WTF? I took the medication and it cleared up the swelling right away but I gained at least 25 lbs of water weight and hated it. I got off the drug and the swelling came right back. I went for a second visit, they gave me a shot in my hand and this caused my hand to swell up even more. On the third visit, I could tell Dr. Pan had no idea what she was doing nor has any business practicing medicine because my hand was still badly swollen and she told me to go see a hand therapist. She was trying to get rid of me after milking as much money as she could from my insurance company and myself. I went ahead and saw a professional hand therapist and he said my doctor was out of her mind and confirmed what I thought. I have reported this information to the State of Virginia and they have told me they will start an investigation. It's now late August and I have an appointment in mid September to see a hand surgeon at Georgetown University to see one of the top hand surgeons in the DMV, I'm sure he will be better (almost any doctor would be that knew what they were doing). I would avoid this place at all costs. read more

The office in Alexandria/Springfield charged me an outrageous amount of money ($300.00!) for a Pneuma/Vac walk boot (an air boot) that I found on Amazon for $55! Insurance will not cover the ostentatious charge because they think it is so unreasonable as well. Find a better practice to go to where you won't get ripped off like I did! I will make it my mission to deter my friends and family from going to this practice. This is no way to treat patients if you want them to return to your practice or refer you to others. I injured my shoulder in May. He took only an xray. He assured me there was no tear. He told me dont worry about the pain, gave me a 2 page handout with some stretches, identified that he could give me injections for the pain, and told me I could continue exercising including rowing and lifting weights. I did the stretching but ceased all other exertional activities due to pain. Two months later and with no relief, I asked for physical therapy. He said ok, but that he would rather give me injections. I said no to the injections. After 6 weeks of PT with no improvement, he cancelled my PT pending a reeval by him. I went back to his office, he again said I had not torn anything and again said I should get injections. In the course of PT I had learned that a tendon tear would not have shown on the xray and that an MRI was the relevant imaging to identify a tendon tear. I demanded an MRI before the injections and he acquiesced and sent me for an MRI. The MRI report clearly stated I had at least a 60% tear in my supraspinatus tendon and a labrum tear. He reviewed the MRI imaging and said not to read much into the MRI summary report. He said that in his review of the images I had a degenerative condition, not an acute injury or a tear and again told me to undergo the injections. At that point I had lost all faith in Dr. You and his abilities. I subsequently saw two surgeons who both reviewed my MRI images and report; both surgeons concluded that I had a significant tear in my supraspinatus tendon that required immediate surgery. I underwent surgery on 10/30/18 at which point it was revealed that my supraspinatus tendon was completely torn, my labrum was torn, and I had a large bone spur in my AC joint. Dr. You misdiagnosed me and caused me months of pain. Also it is unclear why he couldn't have identified the large bone spur in my AC on that first xray or why he didn't send me for an MRI immediately, as these tears would not show up on an xray. Moreover, even when he was able to review the MRI he misread it and misdiagnosed me again. Thus, it appears he is unable to read an MRI and is unfamiliar with the shoulder in general. He wouldn't have even pursued the MRI without my demand, which is very curious because it is the only imaging test which could have shown a tendon injury. His repeated recommendations for injections also makes me wonder what type of relationship he has with the injection manufacturer, as both surgeons told me that injections would have had no lasting impact on my injury. I am very disappointed in his care of me and will never return to OrthoVirginia for any type of service again. Even if you can accept Dr. You's curt and dismissive demeanor, he is not qualified to examine and diagnose a shoulder injury. read more

Dr Taylor was great, told me a lot about my condition. What he didn't tell me was after he gave me an injection in my foot that I would be in a lot more pain after! I called the nurse to see what I could could do and she said stay off of your foot. I have 2 small kids, which makes it very hard to stay off your feet. Still in a lot of pain the next day, waited hours for someone to call me back. Not a lot of help at all. read more

I am putting a review for the OrthoVirginia PT office in Springfield. I'd been suffering for several years with a torn rotator cuff in my shoulder. My OrthoVirginia doctor said I should first try PT to stave off having surgery. I spent about 6 weeks in PT at Springfield, with Maria Nasralla. While it helped somewhat, ultimately I had to have arthroscopic surgery to repair the tear and reattach the bicep. After surgery, it was back to PT again with Maria! The next 16 weeks we worked to regain ROM and strength, and it was a success. She has a gentle and direct way to coach you. She never criticized me at all, but was always positive in her corrections when needed, and praised me when things were going well. Just the kind of person you need in your corner when you are recuperating! I was discharged and spent a whole year with no pain and excellent strength and range of motion. But .... my surgeon told me that during the repair he saw I had zero cartilage in my shoulder due to osteoarthritis. No surprise since I already have had a knee and two hip replacements due to the same condition! He said it was just a matter of time before I would need a shoulder replacement. His prediction came true last fall! My range of motion went to near zero, and the pain was excruciating. He referred me to a colleague who does total shoulder replacements (and whom I've already reviewed on Yelp). After surgery, you can guess where I went for my PT. Yes, back to OrthoVirginia PT in Springfield with Maria! We worked for 5 months to rehab this replacement. It was not always easy, in fact most of the time it was pretty hard. I knew that going in -- everyone always said that the shoulder replacement is by far the hardest you'll ever have and its true. Maria, with her long history on working with me on my shoulder, was the perfect therapist. She worked with me passively and actively, in just the right combination, to help me get through rehab. While I only worked with Maria, I want to also comment on the other therapists and therapy assistants there. They are the best. I spent considerable time over the past 2+ years witnessing them working with all sorts of patients. Everything from young athletes who wanted to get back "in the game" to crotchety senior citizens who could be defeated by pain. They all kept a positive attitude with every patient and remained hopeful and helpful in working with them. And the front desk folks, too, were amazing. I'm an old admin person myself. I can tell professionals when I see, and they are true professionals. They juggle greeting patients, making appointments, changing appointments, verifying insurance, explaining insurance, announcing appointments to the therapists, taking co-pays ... all with a genuine smile of their faces! In short, you need more than 5-stars to review of OrthoVirginia in Springfield. It might be hard to get that first appointment (because of their reputation I think), but once you are in, you won't be disappointed. You, of course, have to be committed to doing the work, but if you are committed then you have a great team alongside you. read more

Dr. Peter Thomas is AMAZING!!! My husband broke his wrist and had to have surgery. From our first visit with him they were able to get my husband in within 5 days for surgery! We had some questions before the actual surgery and Dr. Thomas called my husband personally and answered every single question. He is about to go in for his third post op appointment and has had ZERO complaints. This doctor is top notch, knows exactly whats going on and how to treat patients. Maybe I was lucky. A lot of bad doctors offices in the area because the administrative staff don't really care about their jobs, but I had very little trouble with my bills and everything. In comparison to others, I wouldn't mind coming back here again. My doc was very comprehensive in his explanation and very realistic, too. Never left without doubting anything honestly. I will never go back to the Walker Lane office location. Billing department is completely messed up, disorganized, and disorderly. I got a cast for a broken wrist a year ago at the Walker lane location. Paid them my $40 co-pay and an additional $34 out of pocket charge for the cast. My insurance paid them the remaining charges for the cast and visit. A year later, I go back for a knee issue and they tell me I have an outstanding $20 balance for the cast. What? I called the insurance company and we had a conference call with Orthova billing. Insurance says they paid them. Orthova said I signed paperwork stating I would pay for any additional charges for a cast. Why did it take a year for them to charge me an additional $20 and why did they even let me walk out the door with a cast that wasn't fully paid for? Sounds very fishy and careless on Orthova's part. Needless to say, I won't be back to the Walker Lane office. Also, one of the front desk people at Walker Lane really hates her job. It's evident by the way she talks to people trying to check in for an appointment. Rude would be an understatement. read more

I just completed physical therapy at OrthoVirginia Physical Therapy at 6355 Walker Ln (Suite 202), Alexandria, VA. I worked with Carla Bouma (PT, DPT). She was simply terrific and so was her supporting staff. I've had persistent shoulder pain for decades, and I can already -- after just several weeks -- feel the difference. Again, Carla was wonderful. I learned a great deal from her, came to enjoy my sessions, and will actually miss her and her great team now that it's done. I give OrthoVirginia an A+ rating. read more

Avoid avoid avoid! This place kept a family member waiting for two hours until she finally had to leave. Moreover, when she asked to speak to a tech, the tech said the receptionist lied and said she had been late - when she had actually showed up early. Super unprofessional. I honestly wish I could give this place less then one star. I was a patient of Dr. Daniel Thompson from April until July. I had nothing but good service from him. He was very kind and knowledgeable from my understanding all up until September 3rd. I went to him because of severe knee pain. I had X-rays and an MRI done at his request. Then I was told that I had a medial meniscus tear and a bakers cyst all of which could not be helped with physical therapy. So I ended the physical therapy that I was currently in from Feb until May. I was then given a cortisone shot in my knee that did in fact get rid of the pain. By July the pain had returned I went back and was put on anti inflammatory medicine that did nothing but make my stomach hurt. I was told if the medicine didn't work to call back and schedule surgery. Mid August I scheduled my surgery. I was contacted by the doctors office and the hospital about the precautions of surgery and all the procedures I needed to follow. I put in my vacation time bought the clothes they suggested, shoes, the wrap for my stitches, and even made my mother put in leave for work so that she could pick me up afterward. I received several calls from both the doctors office and the hospital stating that 80% of my surgery would be covered by my insurance. They told me how much I owed the doctor and how much I owed the hospital. The day before my surgery Sept 3rd I received several calls from orthovirginia but was at work at the time. They then called my mother(emergency contact) who relayed the message to me to call them back. As I spoke to a very rude lady named jolita on the phone she explained to me that my surgery was canceled less then 24 hours before I was suppose to have it. She then explained that the insurance company denied my claim and that they found out about it Aug 13th and didn't tell me anything until Sept 3rd. Then she had the nerve to ask if I would like to pay out of pocket for the surgery. As I explained how ridiculous the situation was she told me "mam stuff like this happens all the time" as though it is common practice to falsely lead a patient into thinking that they were going to have surgery. After talking to her she patched me through to her manager named Edna who's phone call magically disconnected as I explained how upset I was. After calling back I was told that it was in fact their fault for calling me and previously trying to collect my money when they knew that the insurance denied their claim. I was then told the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. That a hurricane in the Bahamas and Florida was the reason they couldn't get a hold of my insurance company to try and fix the issue. Knowing that someone was lying to me I called the insurance company and was told that they were based in Tennessee and that my claim didn't go through because of inadequate paperwork filed through the doctors office. Not only that but the doctors from the insurance company reviewed my MRI and x-rays and said that meniscus surgery was unnecessary because I didn't have a meniscus tear. That I was likely miss diagnosed. I have spent the last 8 months chasing people down trying to get some kind of help to relieve the pain in my knee all to lead me down a rabbit hole with more questions then answers. I have spent hundreds of dollars and wasted so much time following the information that was given to me by this doctors office to end up with nothing but more pain. I wasn't allowed to take any pain killers for a week leading to surgery which caused swelling and more discomfort in my leg. I wish I never met these people. They do not care about their patients. They do not care if they help you and what's worse is they act as though you are a burden to them. I received no apology, no explanation, and no further follow up after this horrible ordeal. Now I have to start all over again with a new doctor and a new hospital and pray they can help me before the holidays. I honestly wish I could sue them just for wasting my time. I hope this spares even one person from having to go through what I have. Please make sure you review your hospital or doctor before going I was blinded by big lights and the fancy hospital and forgot all they really want is your money. read more
