Our family learned so much from Des. Her differentiated approach is amazing. I've worked in…read moreeducation my whole career and wanted someone who knew best practice and could speak to recent research findings. She knows that one size doesn't fit all and I really appreciated her tips and tricks as my son went through all his phases. She respected our '(semi) attachment parenting' approach and put a specific individualized plan together that worked for our family. We were against letting our son cry and Des was warm and kind. Sleep is tough and we had a tricky infant. We still have our phases (he's two now) but he has healthy sleep habits because of what we learned from Des. My only wish is that I contacted Des sooner !

#twins. Wow. We called Desiree when we realized we had developed some not so great sleep habits…read morewith our twins. In the early months we were in survival mode with two babies and a five year old! I distinctly remember sitting on the couch with our older daughter watching the WorldCup while the twins were sound asleep swinging in the swings, which we quickly came to rely heavily on. To be honest, SO much of the early days are now a blur, but something that truly sticks out was the help and support that Desiree gave us throughout the first 2 years. Right from the get go we knew it was going to require our commitment and effort - there were two of them afterall! Each step, each transition, each shift, the kneeling down double handed tap - she helped us truly understand why we were doing what we were doing, and how what we were doing would be contributing to sound sleep habits these monkeys would have as they grow. Something I can't emphasize enough is how calm, thoughtful and compassionate Desiree was with us both. There were times where things were going so well, then All of a sudden they weren't. A new development stage hit and it felt like we had gone off the rails. But as we may have been exhausted, ever so empatheticly and calmly Desiree reminded us that our girls were in fact just growing and changing, we discussed an adjusted plan, and that it would indeed be ok. And it was. We stuck to the plan, each and every time, and each and every time things continued to go well. Desiree was always available and full of sound advice. We would not have sanely survived these past three years without Desiree's help, and for that we are immensely grateful. Thank You!!

The staffs I've met so far had been professional and very helpful with my needs. After a few tastings, it turns out that I have a severe sleep apnea and is required to sleep with a CPAP machine, and recently after doing a sleep study at UBC hospital, this clinic had set up to a separate oxygen machine to the CPAP machine. At first, it was kind of alarming, but shortly after using it, the was actually really easy to use, seeing as the devices are very non evasive. The result so far is that I do actually feel a bit better physically, and my pulse/heart rate and blood pressure seems to be improving since I started using these machines back in the middle or end of April. I'm still going to be meeting with them for a while, but so far tho, I've been happy with the current results.

Despite my wife's constant complaints, others had said that maybe (but just maybe) I suffered from apnea or that I didn't at all. But I went ahead. It's hard to say how enthusiastic I am about my Silencer. The thing is just magic. My whole world seems different to me now that I am sleeping better. What's more, I think my dear wife likes my Silencer more than I do. George G.

Several years ago I was recommended by my dentist to visit Dr. Halstrom's sleep apnea treatment…read morefacility in Burnaby, near Vancouver (where he was located at the time). My dentist suggested that I might have sleep apnea as I was grinding my teeth at night. However, I'm a self-confessed, youthful fitness fanatic with 5% body fat and therefore don't fit the conventional profile of a person with sleep apnea i.e. a seriously overweight middle-aged man. I mentioned this to Dr. Halstrom when I first met with him. And he immediately agreed that I likely had sleep apnea. I thought his "instant diagnosis" (or assumption) was odd considering that we had only been talking for about a minute. What came next was even more odd. He immediately sat me down in a dentist's chair and took an imprint of my teeth so that he could order a customized $2,300 plastic mouth guard device to help with sleep apnea that he calls "The Silencer." Almost as an apparent after-thought, he sent me home with a device that attaches to one's finger while a person sleeps to measure his/her heart rate. This is supposed to determine if a person has sleep apnea. I returned the device the next day. And a few days later, surprise, surprise: I received word that I had been diagnosed with "borderline" sleep apnea. So Dr. Halstrom gleefully handed over my "Silencer" soon thereafter. And that was that -- or so it seemed. The problem was that the device didn't really seem to work. And when I removed it each morning, its horrible smell was enough to make me gag. I told Dr. Halstrom what the problem was. And he basically didn't seem to care. He had been paid and apparently that was all that mattered to him. He refused at the time to do anything about it. At that point, I went to see him and threatened to go to the media with my story. After some haggling, he eventually handed over a cheque for $1,250, which was all that he was prepared to refund me. He reasoned that the device cost him $800 to have manufactured. And he also said he still felt entitled to make a profit from the 90 minutes or so in total that I had spent in his office. So he kept the remaining approximately $250. In return, he insisted that I didn't go to the media. I honoured our agreement. However, a few weeks ago I had cause to have two more sleep apnea tests (the same kind as with Dr. Halstrom) that were conducted at a differently sleep apnea clinic. And lo and behold: The results came back negative. I do not have sleep apnea, not even the so-called "bordeline" kind that Dr. Halstrom suggested I had in order to sell me his over-priced gizmo. (By the way you, can buy similar devices online for as little as $20, albeit ones made from a cheaper kind of plastic). So the moral of this story/post is that you may want to get a second opinion when dealing with this doctor, who I believe is over-zealous in his efforts to convince potentially gullible patients(like me) that they need his expensive "Silencer." Caveat Emptor! By the way, my sleep issues seem to be getting resolved ever since I recently stopped eating wheat. And that's another story that I don't really need to get into.
