Oscar's is one of those neighborhood gems that offers a hint of yesteryear with gadgets of today. If you live in or near Crescent Hill, you'll be pleased to find Oscar's sitting at the corner of Frankfort Ave and Franck Ave. It's a small but mighty shop, very walkable, easy, free out-front street parking. It feels very mom-and-pop. The people working are always very friendly and knowledgeable -- and fast. And, surprisingly affordable, even cheaper than big box hardware in some cases. I've lived in the neighborhood for oh gosh, 22 years. Eek. And they have been a godsend for Crescent Hill homeowners like me. It's not just the convenience, it's the ability to provide services that old homes need. For example, my house was built in 1928. I still have, and use an old school deadbolt on my front door.. with its original key. They are the only place in town (that I've found) who can cut replicas of this particular key style.. and guess what they charge? $1.99 a key! That's it. Pretty sure the HD is around $4-5 a key. Example 2: I haven't replaced all the windows in my house yet. A few years ago I needed to repair some of the screens and a few cracked window panels. The old school kind, 4 aluminum sides and a sheet of glass. Guess who was the only place that still repairs those?.. you betcha. Example 3: I had a ceiling fan in need of an odd-sided light bulb. Guess where I found one? Small local businesses like Oscar's truly make this neighborhood special. A few stops at this spot recently has made me thankful to have Oscar's Hardware as my neighborhood hardware store. Oscar's has a bit of everything -- plants out front to buy, all the bits you'd expect to find at a hardware store with some other odds and ends inside. During my visits employees were eager to help, including helping me find a bolt that matches the one I brought in trying to match and replace. The prices also seemed reasonable. If I truly had time to peruse I bet I would find even more that would be helpful to have. This store is larger than you would think when just looking at its front. I was trying to do a dishwasher repair and I needed a very specific type of screwdriver. For my device I needed a star screwdriver unfortunately, this was not a device I had on hand. Oscar's is close to where I live, so I decided to go there and to see if I one of these oscars is the quintessential local hardware store. It's well organized. It's got a good array of options and the staff is really helpful and are willing to give you advice. Thankfully, I was able to find the star screwdriver pretty quickly and it was a very reasonable price. This was easier than going to Amazon and ordering something and then waiting for it to arrive. I even ended up chatting with the cashier about needing this type of tool, and he told me that it used to be very common to have these types of screws utilized on appliances and on vehicles. This help me realize that the star screwdriver was going to come in handy and I'm so grateful that Oscars had it available. The dishwasher is fixed by the way. read more

This is a wonderful local hardware store. The store feels sort of cramped with different things hiding behind every corner. Truly this is a bit daunting for the likes of me who is about as out of place in a hardware store as my cats are in a swimming pool. But this isn't a huge deal since one of the employees ALWAYS asks if I need help finding anything and directing me to the right aisle. They take it one step further ensuring you get what you need by asking follow up questions about what you're working on. I always feel like they're just as much educators as they are sales people always willing to explain why you should go with something but not in just a "my paycheck depends on it" sort of way. Oscar's hardware seems to have every thing that you would need for most projects. They don't seem to have a lot of the larger items you might find on the sales floor of a Home Depot but that's fine for me. I'm sure they would still help you find what ever big thing you need where ever it may be. The location is also fantastic being next to the best wine store in town and easily walkable from loads of neighborhoods. It really feels like a small town mom & pop hardware store that is my first stop for any tools I need. I walk over to oscars before even checking the web and they've never let me down. read more

First time going in and had previously sent my friend in to pick up an item for me. The staff wasnt very helpful and oddly enough its juneteenth and i myself and friend are black so i dont think they cared to even help they clearly treated both of us the same way and were standoffish. Very sad to have to write this taken that the other reviews are not like this. read more

I needed to stop and get some keys made while I was in the area so I decided to stop in the local shop! I prefer to support local! I walked in and was browsing for a few minutes when a young man came to see if I needed help. He gave me key options and made my keys quickly. He answered my paint questions as well. They do offer car keys to be made there as well. They have a great variety in this small shop and good service. So glad to have a shop close to home that I don't have to walk miles in to find what I need! read more

Ever since Hammer hardware closed I have been shopping at Oscar's hardware. Oscar's is great! I have found many items there that a professional would use--I was a professional. Oscar's carries items that are difficult to find other than on the Internet. The staff are extremely helpful and the manager--owner?--remembers your name after a couple of visits. Oscar's also cuts glass to order! If you are looking for hardware Oscar's is the place to go. They know their stock unlike employees at box stores. Besides it is a Louisville store. read more

Awesome local hardware store that has been in business for several generations. I had long driven past Oscar's and not given it much thought until I needed some things for my place as stopped in. Located adjacent to Red Hog, it's a clean, organized hardware store with a surprisingly vast selection crammed into the tiny space, and friendly, knowledgeable staff who can point you in the right direction for any home need or house project. On my last visit I bought a Reel Mower for my yard. The person working that day told me that I would need to get the blades sharpened every so often, and that I could do so at another hardware store in town since Oscar's doesn't offer that service. I was impressed at the helpful tip and that they were willing to point me towards a competitor to boot! They know that earnest, honest, and helpful will keep their customer base loyal. I love seeing local spots like this that are thriving and an important part of the community. Oscar's is one of my new favorite spots (hello to having a house that is over a century old!). Love coming to this local spot! Oscar's is one of the few remaining community hardware stores out there. And you can definitely tell they want to treat every customer like a friend. Service is excellent. Someone will come greet you at the door and help you if you need it. They've helped me find everything from $2 air filters to expensive tools. You can have keys made here, purchase normal hardware items, and pick up UPS packages (they are a local hub UPS uses). Best of all, you can rest assured someone will help you find what you need and they know their inventory well. The biggest fear most people have when walking into a hardware store is that they'll spend hours trying to find the exact screw or tool or pipe they need. The great staff at Oscar's make shopping simple. They'll help you find exactly what you need. So leave your anxiety at home! They're also extremely knowledgeable and can help you solve a problem you have. Fair prices, excellent service and good selection. As I walked in the door an older gentleman asked if I needed help and from then on he stayed by my side and continued to answer any and all questions I had. Oscar's Hardware is not enforcing mask wearing or social distancing. I tried to check out there today, and there was a customer without a mask leaning on the counter right next to the register and the man working the register wasn't wearing a mask either. I asked if they were enforcing mask wearing and he shook his head and said they weren't. He seemed annoyed by the question. Really stoked to have risked my health just to buy paint stripper and chip brushes--or rather, not buying because I left without making a purchase. read more

I've always frequented this establishment for many years due to convenience and in support of the " mom and pop" store environment. I work in retail myself and understand the ins and outs of pricing and customer satisfaction. I recently visited this location and can say there was nothing honorable about their mistake and lack of care when a product I wanted was mislabeled. Had that been the store I work in, we would have honored our mistake, and sold the item for what it was clearly marked. Perhaps this is why the huge conglomerate stores as Home Depot and Lowes have been putting our small community shops out of business for years. My advice.... Step it up Oscar, your community is all you have! read more

Oscar's epitomizes the value and importance of a local hardware store. I recently undertook the task of building my own dog gate. I am nearly clueless when it comes to home improvement projects, but Oscar's staff was informative, patient, helpful, and not at all condescending, despite my lack of hardware knowledge! A couple days later, I returned with yet another idea for the gate, and the employee who had assisted me gladly helped me find the tools for my new approach, as well as encouraging me to return the unused materials from the gate's previous iteration. I can't stress enough how grateful I am for the help--I never would have gotten this type of assistance and customer service at a chain home improvement store.
