It feels very mom-and-pop. The people working are always very friendly and knowledgeable -- and fast. And, surprisingly affordable, even cheaper than big box hardware in some cases. I've lived in the neighborhood for oh gosh, 22 years. Eek. And they have been a godsend for Crescent Hill homeowners like me. It's not just the convenience, it's the ability to provide services that old homes need. For example, my house was built in 1928. I still have, and use an old school deadbolt on my front door.. with its original key. They are the only place in town (that I've found) who can cut replicas of this particular key style.. and guess what they charge? $1.99 a key! That's it. Pretty sure the HD is around $4-5 a key. Example 2: I haven't replaced all the windows in my house yet. A few years ago I needed to repair some of the screens and a few cracked window panels. The old school kind, 4 aluminum sides and a sheet of glass. Guess who was the only place that still repairs those?.. you betcha. Example 3: I had a ceiling fan in need of an odd-sided light bulb. Guess where I found one? Small local businesses like Oscar's truly make this neighborhood special. Next time you need a tool or things for a home repair, especially weird, older-home things, don't sleep on Oscar's.

Jennifer helped me, and it took a couple of tries, but we found the perfect replacement harp. I then brought them a little bedside lamp I had as a child. It needed some repairs. They quoted a priced and also noted a crack in one plastic piece I hadn't even noticed. They said they'd try to repair that too but if they had to source a replacement part, it might cost a bit more. I agreed. The lamp came back repaired and with a stylish metal piece to replace the broken part. It did cost a couple dollars more, but I am so pleased to have that lamp working and beautiful again. When picking up the the little lamp, I found another table lamp I liked. Their shop is jam-packed with great inventory, many styles and themes otherwise hard to find. I brought the new lamp home, but the shade didn't work in the space. I took the shade back (still in original wrapping) and they sent me home with 3 others we picked out to try. One worked beautifully, so I bought it and they even gave me a credit on the original included lampshade since I returned it. Then today I went back looking for a floor lamp for a tight space. Jennifer helped me again, patiently helping me try out a couple of options in the shop. I chose a sleek brass floor lamp with a stunning black shade. She told me if it didn't work out, I could bring it back and try the other one. It's now in its space, looking so elegant that there's no way it's being returned. This shop has become my go-to for lamp and lamp accessories!

They spent a good deal of time with me - sometimes both at once - to help me reach my decision. While I was there, several other customers came in with what appeared to be lamp repairs, and the shop also has plenty of lamps for sale as well. I ended up purchasing two small modern off-white shades for antique bedside lamps and a really cool clover-shaped tan shade for a living room floor lamp. The prices were fair and in line with what I was expecting to pay so overall I was extremely pleased with the experience and will definitely return with any future lamp-related needs.

He was only moderately interested as he told us his specialty was "historic" preservation (sorry our house is only historic to our family). We were told we would be called to set up a visit for measurements followed by a quote. After two weeks and no call my husband called the store and was told we would get a call (last) Saturday and still nothing. Guess we'll move on. Would like to use this side of the state line, but what can we do. When this happened to me recently I was reluctant to call an AC repair company because I suspected they would notice the age if my unit. Then likely tell me that it is too old to repair. Perhaps because AC company would rather one purchase a new unit, and therefore make the parts unavailable. Alternatively, the issue would be incorrectly diagnosed. Negativity Alert: Admittedly, I am skeptical about mechanics an other repair professionals I don't know. My past painfully expensive experiences have taught me that too often, a position of vulnerability leads to inflated bills and or unnecessary replacement of items instead of components. These statements are especially true if one is a woman or not mechanically inclined. Thankfully, my dad and now ex-husband had a secondary name of Mr. FIX IT and apparently I have inherited some of this ability. The GOOD NEWS: I discovered a best kept secret where one can locally purchase parts needed for a residential AC system. Its one of the few companies that will sell to the general public with stock for most systems. Their "bread and butter" is commercial refrigeration and cooling systems with 30,000 parts availble. Seeing the large assortment of tools and other items not common at the big box hardware chains made me feel like a kid in the candy store. Service was efficient and friendly. This store's information will be in my contact list for future reference.
