This place has good service and food. They're known for their Florentine steak - we didn't try it though. The vegetable flan with fondue was bland, osso bucco good, and penne with meat sauce was also good (a little too salty for me). Cheesecake was also bland but recommended by the waiter. The restaurant is not friendly towards those with mobility challenges. There's a cute exterior covered patio with a few dining tables but too cold for dinner in mid-February. Prices were fair. DINNER REVIEW I'm generally no fan of traditional local restaurants since my mum is a pro in making Tuscan food, but I was brought here by a few friends coming from Piemonte and I was extremely glad they opened my eyes on this little corner. The restaurant is outside the center, in a more "industrial area" and this is why it is probably the one you want to go if you're on a business trip and would like to have some serious cooking before heading to bed. They also have an interesting new deal, since you can buy the products you eat, directly in the restaurant. The selection is wide: cured meats, the famous steak, home made jams, Tuscan cheese, jellies, durum wheat pasta, tomatoes, pickled veggies, olives, paté and of course wines and liquors. You can make your purchase online as well. As for my dinner, it was simply special: Appetizers of pickled onions, artichokes, eggplant, dried tomatoes, olives, olives paté on bread, selection of cheese with two different jams, the incredibly tasty vegetarian little tart, drowned in melted cheese Main course: tagliatelle with Porcini mushrooms, divine Second course: Florentine steak, fried mushrooms and fried vegetables All to be appreciated with different kinds of Dosio wines. This is it. This is where I had the best encounter with a meal in my entire life. To say the experience was existential would be an understatement; everything from the atmosphere, to the service, to the exquisite food was five steps ahead of any other restaurant I've been in across Italy, Europe and the United States. When our hotel's concierge recommended the restaurant, my party was skeptical. After all, surely this was just some local establishment that had an agreement to take in all the tourists and treat them to over-priced food. We couldn't have been more wrong. The restaurant was packed with local residents, obviously engrossed in good food, great company and even better wine. The staff was wondrously kind and extraordinarily accommodating to us (who spoke no Italian) in translating menu options and offering up fantastic recommendations, especially concerning wine pairings. The ambience of the establishment was perfection, with an engaged clientele, quality provisions on full display and music to complement the surreal scene. The food itself was masterful, and I savored literally every bite of the entre I ordered. The pasta was flavorful and fresh, with a sauce to dazzle the imagination. The steak was seared to perfection, with the meat retaining every bit of it's natural profile. I let every sip of chianti linger on my lips so that the bottle would last longer. The creamy desert pastry that followed was the perfect end to a perfect evening of indulgence. To say I would recommend this restaurant to others is an understatement. read more

This place was amazing, everything we tasted was delicious. LOVED the penne pasta with meat sauce, so much so that we had to order a second plate for the table. And my steak was cooked to perfection. FIRST - In the top 10 most disappointing meals I have ever had. It is not one of the worst restaurants I've ever been to, just one of the most disappointing. My uncle and I are in Montecatinin on holiday and asked the hotel staff for their personal recommendations. It is obvious to us that this was not a personal recommendation as much as a recommendation from the hotel who has a business relationship with the restaurant owner. My uncle and I are foodies. We LOVE food. We love trying new foods, local foods, and we love asking the waiter/chef to make whatever they wish for us to try that night. Osteria di Poneta was not that type of restaurant. The building is in the center of town and the restaurant tries to set the old world Italian mood with some paint and dusty decor. The credit goes to the owner for making the restaurant look interesting. The menu was in Italian and English, so we didn't have any problem figuring out what to order. We noticed the asterisk on certain items and found out that those items were not in season and therefore frozen not fresh. We decided to stay away from those to get the freshest local cuisine. That is where the credit ends though. As I said, my uncle and I are foodies, so we order as much food to begin with and then order more as needed/wanted. We started with the fried polenta with chicken liver pate, black cabbage, and wild boar meat sauce and the Italian anchovy fillets with toast, butter, and peppers. The polenta was bland and fried hard. There was no creaminess left inside the fried outer shell. The wild boar meat sauce didn't have much flavor, while the black cabbage and chicken liver pate were enjoyable. Only wish the polenta wasn't a brick. The anchovies were extremely boney and very fishy. We have had Italian anchovies and sardines before. Sweet saltiness from the sea. These were fishy, not salty. The toast, like the polenta was rock hard and hard to eat. Although the combo of anchovy, butter, and pepper on the table bread (not toast) was edible. As our second course we ordered the Tagliatelle with artichokes Nostrani and Penne in meat sauce. The tagliatelle was bland. The dish was completely under seasoned. There was almost no distinction between the artichokes and pasta. A grind of pepper and/or a shaving of parmesan cheese could have made a world of difference here. The penne had flavor, as described by my uncle, as much flavor as Beef-a-Roni has. I can leave it at that. For our main course we ordered Hague fried (chicken and rabbit) with fried potatoes and Wild Boar Stew. The stew came over two pieces of toast, again rock hard. The meat was so overdone it was dry while surrounded by the stew sauce. Again, described by my uncle as Dinty Moore beef stew. It was underwhelming. The farm fried meat was fresh. Bones abound in each piece. If you have had McDonalds chicken nuggets, you've had Osteria di Poneta's Hague fried. There was nothing special about this dish. Overall, our experience at Osteria di Poneta was extremely underwhelming and disappointing. Maybe the chef was having an off night. Maybe our expectations are too high. Either way, I cannot in good conscious provide a positive recommendation for this restaurant. Best of luck! read more

This is the Italian restaurant we came to Italy to enjoy. Small, friendly staff, wine cellar/study decor, 3 house wines at 14 Euro/bottle plus a long wine menu. The special today was Porcini mushroom served grilled (or fried) as a side or appetizer. We ordered two servings (one giant mushroom each) grilled. Besides being absolutely delicious, the body of the mushroom had this weird-but-interesting gel-like texture. The wild boar and the Minestrone (more of a stew than a soup) were great, too. They suggested fried potatoes for our side, but we got a nice salad prepared at table side instead (the salad was the last course). Writing this review almost makes me sad, as I had such high hopes for this place. When reading the other reviews, I thought to myself, " this place is perfect!". Sadly, for most it seems to be, but for me it is lacking in many ways. We arrived on a drizzly, chilly Saturday afternoon at around 8:30. We were overjoyed when we finally found the place, as we let ourselves in the door. Immediately, we were immersed in an atmosphere that was not quite as warm as the weather outside. Cold stares seemed to creep out at us from several angles as we awkwardly waited for someone to acknowledge our presence. Hey, maybe it's just a little game that they play to see if we are willing to take some abuse. Needless to say, we stuck around to enjoy a little more of it. While there were tables that were stiill empty, we were informed that the only seats available we're outside. That should have been our cue. But we said to ourselves, " the food must be amazing if the service is this bad." And we were half right... The food was definitely good, but great? Seriously? Evidently some people definitely need to broaden their Horizons a little. There is great food out there that doesn't require you to experience emotional abuse in order to feel contented.
