This the spinach and ricotta filled ravioli with the string beans in a tomato sauce.

I went on a private tour and the driver took me to this restaurant. It wasn't the place I wanted to go. The driver insisted we go there and then helped himself to lunch with me and on me. The server was very nice and extremely helpful in choosing a wine. The wine wasn't what I had in mind and I had to buy the whole bottle instead of a glass but the server made an honest effort, which I appreciated. I ordered the spinach and ricotta filled ravioli with mushrooms on top. Along with a side of string beans. The strings beans were flat like fettuccine and I swirled it on my fork. It was in a tomato sauce with soft tiny carrots. It was on the salty side but absolutely delicious. Everything was fresh, but the ravioli was just ok. It was fresh it just didn't have savoy. It's not a restaurant I would go back to but it's fine if you don't want a lot of seasoning. The string beans kind of balanced the meal out. The restaurant is in the back of a building. Well that's the way I entered. I was in the back parking lot and the restaurant has tables in the back with a canopy over all the tables. It's not fancy but it was ok because it was a beautiful day to sit outside. Check your bill and watch the older lady who rings you up. She charged me 10 euros more. Luckily my driver was there to point it out to her and enforce that she change it because she didn't want to. He ended up being of great use and he asked the waiter to allow me to taste a sweet after dinner wine which was delicious.

Intro: I attended Palio in Siena, the city's historic horse race that has been going on since The Middle Ages. Prior to my trip, while I was in Rome, a random guy I met at the bar recommended checking out Antica Trattoria Papei. I added it to my list and I was pleased to find out that the restaurant has received a Michelin Star (back in 2018) I believe. I have never been to a Michelin Star restaurant so I was beyond excited to check it out. Service (1.5/5): The evening before Palio, I stopped by for dinner. The manager told me the restaurant was closed for some pre-Palio festivities and would re-open several hours later. The updated hours were not listed on Google. A slight inconvenience but I made it back once they re-opened and was seated at a table outside. My service experience was probably the worst I had during my Italy trip. The restaurant was full and they were understaffed. That meant that it took forever to get my waitress' attention throughout my dining experience. Palio is a huge event and you know there is going to be a lot of foot traffic. They were not prepared. Ambiance (3/5): Al fresco dining is the way to go in Italy. I was seated in the very corner outside, not the best table, but I was happy to snag a table at such a popular restaurant. Siena is a very picturesque city. This restaurant, however, overlooks a parking lot for the most part so the views aren't very scenic. Drinks (N/A): I went with a soft drink so not much to comment on here. Food (1.5/5): I started off with their tomato bread soup. I have had tomato basil soup in the States countless times and it is one of my favorite soups. I have also had soups served in bread bowls which is a cool concept. Since I was in Italy, I was expecting something different but the soup I received was much different than I expected. There was no bread bowl. I guess, though I'm not entirely sure, bread chunks were in the soup itself. And it was extremely chunky, with lots of tomatoes and perhaps bread with some other veggies. Served lukewarm. A dish I would never order again. From there, I had the wild boar pasta. Another dish I was excited about because I don't have wild boar often. Again, underwhelming. The dish was served lukewarm. The pasta was cooked well but the wild boar lacked flavor. Overall: Talk about a resounding disappointment for my first Michelin Star experience. Either I experienced Antica Trattoria Papei on an off-night or they have become so popular that they have forgotten about the culinary prowess and service which got them the star years ago.

Antica Trattoria Papei is nested in the back streets of Siena and offers some high quality, no frills quintessential Italian food. I really enjoyed my meal here. I will say, the service takes quite a long time so I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're in a rush and looking for a quick bite.

Antica Trattoria Pepei was pointed out in Rick Steve's' guidebook, so we decided to give it a try. The cacio e Pepe pasta here was really good, everything else was just okay but I loved the taste of the pasta a lot. It can take a while to grab your server for a check though, so be prepared for a long wait

AMAZING! We found this place on Tripadvisor and our B&B host recommended Papei. Our train came a little late and we were so excited that this place was open until 3pm. We trained from Venice and were STARVING. We walked in, got seated right away. what we got: -Minestrone soup -- the best you will ever have! I noticed an old granny sitting and I think they were using her recipes:) Tasted so homemade! -Tortellini -- the boyfriend loved it! He is VERY picky and said it was amazing -Cacio e pepe -- basically cheese and pepper spaghetti. The texture of the noodles were like udon and I LOVED IT!!!!! -Tuscan pork sausage -- charcoal grilled. I usually don't eat pork but this was next level amazing. You could never compare BBQ in the states to this! I also noticed they had multiple Michelin stickers on their doors. Fitting :) This was one of my favorite meals ever in Italy! So far I've been to Amalfi Coast, Florence, Venice, and now Siena! Tuscan food is truly a gem!!!

This was such a fun surprise! Our waiter had great recommendations and the food was incredible. We sat outside.

Awesome place, potentially one of the best in Siena. Not as touristy as the overpriced places on the Campo. Great value for money, delicious food and wonderful service, almost stereotypical Italian, i.e., everything is possible always. We had Picci Cardinale and Papardelle Al Cinghiale for starters - awesome. The Coniglio (rabbit) and Ossobucco as main courses. Make sure you order Peperonata as a side dish, you won't regret it. Our waiter was Ricardo, and he was extremely friendly and funny.

Duck Ragu. The bones required more navigation than I wanted to expend.

Head to Trattoria Papei for a lively Siena experience. The trattoria features copious outdoor seating with gorgeous views of historic medieval Siena. Our server was part waiter, part showman, guiding us through a menu with local specialties. The duck ragu came highly recommended and was extremely tasty - but did present challenges eating because of the many bones. It required more work than I wanted to expend. I would recommend the ribs and any of the pasta dishes.

    Tuscan Sausage with Bruschetta

Our accommodation host suggested this place for somewhere to go where locals go, it isn't tourist free but we were surrounded by locals on the Sunday we stopped by for a snack. The food is excellent and it is authentic, but there are other less Sienese options available as well so something for everyone. Our reason for stopping was to try their Tuscan sausage and it did not disappoint. It is grilled or bbq's and done perfectly! Definitely recommend you try it! We also had bruschetta with oil and tomatoes and it was fairly average. Only reason a 4/5 was the lack of view or ambience. Although eating amongst locals was interesting! Definitely recommend!

Great Italian establishment in Siena if you're looking for a family household dinner vibe! They have plenty of outdoor tables if you have a large party. Their starters are incredible! Highly recommend their bruschetta and porcini mushrooms. You can't go wrong with any of their main courses and meat dishes. Our party shared papperdelle with wild boar meat and grilled pork chops, ribs, and sausages. And no Italian meal is complete without an espresso shot at the end. I also urge everyone to enjoy their cured meats! Especially their prosciutto! Overall I would checkout this restaurant if you're ever in Siena, which is a really cool city to visit in Italy. Lots of shops and beautiful architecture to appreciate.

Oven roasted veal & pasta with garlic tomato sauce

My husband and I came to this place with our tour group, reservation made by our tour guide situated just outside Il Campo modest menu with both roasted and grilled meat options for secondi piatti, including wild boar, duck, rabbit, veal, pork, lamb, steak, chicken siena pricing We ordered 1. Oven roasted veal 10€ very thinly sliced veal did poorly to conceal the overly cooked meat, the meat was also heavily salted 2. Pici (thick hand rolled sphagetti with garlic and tomato sauce), 8€ pasta is slightly overcooked, the garlic and tomato sauce tasted closed to canned We had red and white house wines as well as limoncello (This entry was written by my husband)

    Pappardelle with wild boar

Great atmosphere & food! Perfect lunch spot, didn't make a reservation and they still fit us in even though it was crowded. Highly recommend!

The most typical trattoria you can find! Beats all those in the most touristic places, in price and quality. Also very friendly service.

We ended up here by mistake (confused it with another spot), and unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. The restaurant fills up with reservations for two seatings, and from the moment we sat down the pace felt rushed. We ordered drinks and a starter while deciding on the rest, but multiple staff members kept coming by trying to take our full order. It felt like they were pushing to move things along quickly. There were a couple positives. The chicken livers to start were quite tasty and something we didn't see often on other menus. The primi were underwhelming. The pasta didn't taste fresh like many other trattorias in Siena, and the dishes overall were just average. The lasagna in particular was mushy, and the sauces didn't stand out. The secondi were slightly better -- pork ribs, Barolo-braised beef, and a "small chicken" -- but still nothing that justified the higher prices. They do have an underground wine cellar built into a cave, which is interesting to see, but there are other places in Siena with much larger and more impressive cellar spaces. Also worth noting, they add a "10% tax" charge rather than the typical €2 coperto per person. Overall, a rushed and fairly mediocre meal at a higher price point. With so many better places to eat in Siena, this is one I'd skip.
