Don't often visit German restaurants. I have to say I was pretty pleased with this one. I had the brat with a side of potato salad. It was very sizable and delicious. The service was very good and it was fun to watch the waitress come to the table with three big mugs of root beer in one hand I won't say it actually made me feel like I was in Germany, but it was a lot of fun. They have outdoor seating in the back but we ate inside. Totally worth the visit if you want something different! read more

We unfortunately had a really bad experience and hadn't even made it to getting our waters yet... what a disappointment after my husband had grown up going to Minocqua in the summers and was so pumped to finally try Otto's, as he had never been yet. You know that red flag feeling you get after you're seated and no server acknowledges your presence? That was this place. And it was actually the second red flag. When the hostess seated us in the outdoor garden area she informed us it would be 45 minutes until food came out. Interesting information right from the get go. Our group of 5 was puzzled at this....many tables had just cleared out and it seemed that there was plenty of servers and bussers working to handle the amount of customers. From there it just went downhill even further. We ended up finally talking to someone asking if we could switch tables to get out of the direct sun. It took them WAY too long to clear the table they told us we could move to. In the meantime, no one had yet come over to at least give us waters. Once finally at our new table and acknowledged by a server, we put in our drink orders which we kept to waters only because we were at this point questioning bailing. After many minutes of waiting for our waters and never receiving them, we called it quits. We got up and told the server it's been too long, and checking the time it had been 20 MINUTES WITH NO WATERS. The last and worst nail in the coffin was that my mom had a view of our server who had in fact filled our waters towards the back of the garden area and then set them on a tray....and then....was just standing around. Literally. We also witnessed a busser moving at incredibly slow speeds and other servers seeming "busy" but not sure with what....There was absolutely no reason for the delays we experienced. We think the only explanation for all this was that there are simply far too many inefficient workers. Or workers with no sense of urgency or awareness to help one another out. It was quite sad to witness and should be even sadder for the business that they missed out on a customer, and in turn receives a bad review. What a bummer. Will never return. read more

Mr. Yelp is a bratwurst aficionado from childhood and was really looking forward to Otto's. He ordered their brat specialty, which is supposed to be "butterflied" (not sure why). It was a shaped patty, not a butterflied brat and it was burned. His side was supposed to be American potato salad; he got German. I ordered a cup of soup and a Caesar side salad. The soup was ok. The salad was literally romaine lettuce and diced tomatoes (on Caesar?) and the dressing was Italian, not Caesar. I don't know if the server entered the orders incorrectly or if the kitchen just doesn't care. The ambiance was nice inside and out except there were a lot of flies. Super disappointing- def will not be back. read more

Went in around 5 pm to inquire about eating at one of the tables on the sidewalk. There was one occupied table inside, two people at the bar, and a bartender. Bartender was talking to the obviously inebriated patron and mixing a drink. IP engaged me in conversation; still no bartender eye contact. I spotted a person who appeared to be a busboy, wearing an Otto's shirt, walking in from the patio. I started to ask him about sitting outside and from the terrified silence and lack of eye contact, surmised he did not speak English. Finally, the person at the other end of the bar, apparently an Otto's employee, said they don't serve food to the sidewalk tables. We left and had a great meal on the patio of the Mexican restaurant. read more

Posting this in hopes the owner/operator sees this... because we went 2 times this past week while in town and both experiences were pretty rough. First go around, we had 8 total... 4 adults and 4 kids out back. Service was awful. The waiter was condescending and rude and checked on us 1 time while we waiting over an hour for our food after the pretzel came out quickly, made little sense other than he forgot to enter our order considering other tables all got served. Never once acknowledged us during the wait until we flagged him down. Even after he dropped the food off, didn't come back until he dropped the check and was even rude about that's while openly talking bad about our table to other employees 15 feet away. Second visit was my wife and I attempting at redemption coming in for a drink Friday July 25th at around 4:15-4:30, we sat at the furthest end of the bar near the waiters station... what we saw while sitting there was one of the most off putting things I've ever seen in a restaurant. The supposed "manager" (same one we spoke to about the bad service the previous visit) came out of the kitchen or back room finishing what was clearing not his first beer. Proceed to loudly talk to other employees about a women who left her wallet behind. He then proceeded to go through every item in the wallet (well beyond an ID check) and said to the other employees "this is what we do when you leave your wallet behind. We check everything!" Laughed out loud and announced "I'm taking the money!" Proceeded to take it, and walked out the back... all while the waiter we had the prior evening was laughing with him and taking what looked to be his second shot of Jameson in the 45 minutes we sat there after telling the bartender we was "bartending because you are nowhere to be found"... but really he was pouring himself shots. This honestly felt like an episode of Bar Rescue but worse somehow... Hope this finds someone who can look into it and get the women some validation when she gets her emptied wallet back... Came here on two different occasions during our 4-day stay in Minocqua! The service was absolutely fantastic! The bar is decorated so cool and the bier garten is amazing! The beer cheese soup was good, but I would skip the pretzel (it was your basic frozen pretzel you can get at any sporting events.) But everyone in our group who got sausages/ sandwiches really enjoyed them! They don't have a huge draft beer selection but tried a few different ones on there and liked them all! And of course, highly recommend the Bloody Mary with a spotted cow chaser! read more

Updated Review -- I've stopped in a number of times over the years, a couple of times for food and drink, but mostly for some beer and a game or two of shffleboard. They have some of my favorite German beers on tap -- including Spaten's Optimator and Oktoberfest (in season). I do wish they served their beer in proper .3L, .5L or 1L German glassware rather than a generic mug containing an ambiguous quantity (though it looks to be close to .5L). Their brats are big and delicious. They are served with kraut and a choice of some sides -- for me -- German potato salad. Dusseldorf style mustard, the perfect condiment for an authentic German taste, is one of their selections from the condiment tray. In my opinion their German potato salad is a bit lacking in seasoning. I really missed the classic tangy sweet and sour of my favorite varieties (like my grandma used to make). I like my German potato salad slightly warmer than room temperature. The second time I ate at Otto's they served it hot which I did not care for. However, the flavor actually improved as it cooled down. Outside of brats and knockwurst there is not much "German cuisine" on the menu. You can name a burger the "Black Forest Burger" or the "Heidelburger," but it is still just a burger. They do offer a few vegetarian options which could easily become vegan by omitting the cheese. Their shuffleboard table is super -- a "full sized board," with lots of places to set your beer while you are playing. One time we were there on a rainy night and due to a leak in the roof the drips of water landed right on the middle of the table. We had to keep wiping it dry (and it mucked up the shuffleboard powder). Fortunately the rest rooms with paper towel were right next to the table so we could finish our game. This was a while back (sometime in '16) so I'm guessing the roof has been fixed by now (10/19), at least I hope it has!. read more

Went out for a birthday dinner of a good friend. We started with a pretzel appetizer which came with hot cheese and 3 different mustards, that was good. I had the Spatenbrat while the two other guest had burger with swiss cheese and sauerkraut. My brat was delicious, cooked in beer, grilled and came with sauerkraut. Everything was delicious. Our server was great and very attentive. Our only drawback were the flies and a couple of bees around our table. I would recommend this place just because of the atmosphere. You do have a choice to eat inside but we decided outside in their beer garden because it was beautiful outside. read more

Well, at least the building looks German. So, if you worked at a proper German Beer Garden, you would know what a half liter of lager was. Somehow, our server didn't. He looked crosseyed at me when I ordered a half liter of Spaten Lager. No, that is not the 10 oz glass. Oh well, not the end of the world. I would expect more than one or two decent German Beers though. The building and the beer garten really feels German. I just wish the food and beverage menus were more representative of a proper German establishment. Maybe they tried that and it didn't work, I suppose you have to do what it takes to stay open up here. In general, the food is solid and the beer is good enough. Service is hit or miss. The real star here is the beer garden itself. A great place to escape from the t-shirt shops, fudgeries, and Mom shops selling all things Cabin-chic. A little bit of Bavaria in Northern WI - Otto's was a lovely surprise on a beautiful July afternoon. The biergarten is perfect on a nice day - exactly like the biergartens we've enjoyed in Germany and Prague. There's Spaten on tap. There's the shuffleboard game people around here like so much. They've got a decent soft pretzel with really good cheese dip. Beers came quickly. What more can a girl want? I can't speak to evenings, or cold weather visits - but if it's a sunny afternoon and you're short on gemütlichkeit, Otto's will make it right for you. read more

I had been to Ottos a few years ago, before I became vegetarian. We needed a place to eat after a great morning shopping nearby and after a quick call to Ottos to determine what their menu contained- we headed over. Ottos Is dark inside - very black forest. But it is lively and fun. There is an outdoor eating patio, but we chose the bar so we wouldn't have to wait. I began with a Spaten optimator- an almost black dark beer from Germany. LOVED. IT. My friend got a hummus vegetarian wrap and I got the veggie flat bread. It was nice size- full of seasonal veggies, including 2 kinds of zucchini plus a yummy white sauce and cheese. Perfect balance. The flat bread was very tasty. I got a small side of potato salad- which was fine. The place was hopping, but the bartender and wait staff were cheerful and attentive. Very impressive! The whole bill was a bit over $20 so a good price For a yummy meal. Nice to have another good option for lunch in this nearby town. read more
