She will be the very knowledgeable woman behind the counter who absolutely knows the artists and their strengths. Come in with a concept and she will discuss placement, a possible artist, and anything else you may want to know. Sean just finished the outline of my half-sleeve last night. I couldn't be more proud of the work he has done already. This is my second tattoo with Sean. He completed a very large black and gray Lady Justice on the back of my calf this past May. The compliments I have received have been outstanding. If realism is something you are wanting, Sean is your guy! I would not recommend this business to anyone. If you make an appointment but can't come in earlier you are made to feel like you are wrong and told clients like you are unwelcome. Can't speak to the actual art as it does look nice but you could find that elsewhere. read more

Best tattoo place i've ever been to!! I have six tattoos from three different locations but two of them I got here and the experiences have been nothing but fantastic, Jaimeson has done both the tattoos I got from here and he is pretty much the coolest dude i've ever met! He takes a picture or idea you give him and completely transforms it into something unique and amazing, he's also very friendly and a great conversationist!! The mermaid pictured below is something he actually added to the anchor, I originally got the anchor by itself not knowing what I wanted to go with it but he knocked it out of the park. The heart with roses is something i'd wanted for a while but was afraid of how it would come out, he was very reassuring and put my mind at ease. I know, I know...you're not a street shop, you're a custom shop, which you will see them repeating ad nauseam in response to their low star reviews. They only accept a certain type of style, design, feel, look, etc. I get it (and they will refer you out if they feel they cannot meet your needs). The artists are talented but you can find equal talent out in Hampton Roads or Richmond if you do your research. This review has nothing to do with their artists. I am sure they are professional, certainly talented, hardworking, and exceed expectations. Their work is gold standard and they should be proud of that. However, their front desk staff leaves a lot to be desired. I have been in here twice as a guest with someone (not getting a tattoo or asking about one myself) and they are always condescending and act like everyone wants some street-level basic tattoo. I have a running joke with my friends because they always say the next appointment is available in July no matter what month it is in the year. I wish they had some better customer-facing employees. If you're going to do gold standard work in the area then you need a gold standard team. I have worked in customer service for a long time and customers usually just want to be treated kindly and professionally. Don't bs someone about, "availability in July." They always have you jot down your tattoo idea in case an artist is "interested". None of my friends have ever received a return call. Maybe every now and then, Otzi, connect with the community in a fun sale or event. You're in a good spot, you're serving good people, don't be an elitist place and turn off your community. I want you to be amazing, but I wish my friends had been treated better. Sorry for the one star, may change if I am actually mildly impressed with the service next time I step in the shop. read more

I had been shopping around for a tattoo place in Virginia Beach when my friend suggested I look at Otzi. I had always been a fan of great tattoos, but it had been 15 years since my last one. After checking out their website, I knew this was the place for me. The best artists at prices comparable to any other decent shop. The people were extremely friendly and easily understood what it was I was looking for. They told me that Matti would be the best artist for my needs. I had seen Matti's work on Ink Master, so I was really excited to work with him. 2 sessions later, I had my "hooter giving the stinkeye" with a puzzle piece in the wing and I couldn't be happier. I trust this business and these artists completely when it comes to tattoos. They are not your standard tattoo parlor. If they do not think your tattoo idea is a good one, they will tell you (and since they work on commission, you can trust that if they say no, then it's probably a bad idea). I loved the atmosphere here. Somehow they manage to make it fun and professional at the same time. And if you ever have questions while you're waiting, the reception staff is pretty much as knowledgeable as the artists, when it comes to advice. They will also offer you bottled water while you wait. If you're going to pay a deposit, it will be $100 in cash, so be prepared. You can pay the balance on credit card if you wish. Also be prepared to tip your artist in cash. James Trocheck was my artist (I'm not a habitual tattoo customer) and he really surpassed any preconceived notions I had of how this concept was going to turn out. Words cannot describe how happy I am with the finished piece. I trusted Jaimeson to make a memory come to life and he made it happen! read more

I really wish I could give Otzi a five-star review, because Sean Karn is an absolutely amazing artist, and I've gotten some very nice work from him. However, my problem with Otzi is related to how they run their business. They cancelled an appointment I'd made months in advance, on the day I was supposed to have the appointment - inconvenient, but understandable. However, they made zero effort to reschedule or put me on a priority list, which is what I feel a responsible business would do. When I sent a text and called in reply to an email putting out available dates and times several days later, I did not receive a response for three days. When I did, they told me that they had decided they could no longer continue their business with me because I was not "understanding" of the last minute cancellation - which was, o course, wrong. They rudely turned down my future business on a whim, because they felt they'd been "disrespected", when I was just trying to schedule a make-up appointment for the one THEY cancelled. I'd also had an issue with them in the past when they failed to understand that I had to cancel an appointment a full day prior due to an unavoidable last-minute MILITARY obligation I couldn't get out of. They (though primarily the receptionist Athena) seem very self-entitled, elitist, and hypocritical, so be warned. It's a shameful and petty way to run a business, in my opinion, especially when I have been a very loyal customer and have recommended dozens of people to them. So, in summary, great artist...but bad business. read more

I have followed the progress of Otzi since the very beginning. I had always loved the amazing art work done by Sean Karn. His portfolio of work has even convinced my tattoo hating mother that tattoos truly are art. So when I found out that Sean and his family were opening their own shop I was beyond ecstatic. The shop is off in a part of Norfolk that is becoming more and more the kind of place I like to spend my time, with Smartmouth Brewery a short walk away. The shop is big with so many oddities decorating the walls that you can't help but love the place. Every time I have been I was welcomed with a warm smile and a big hello from Athena at the front of the shop and always a smile from Sean and their newer artist. The shop may not be the cheapest you will find but I promise you will be hard pressed to find better work. This shop truly exhibits what's great about Norfolk with the hard working people that run it and it's dedication to quality over quantity. I recommend this to all of my friends looking to get a tattoo and I wouldn't get one from anywhere else. read more

First off I want to say that I don't have a problem with the shop in general, I love the atmosphere, the service is great, and Sean Karn is an amazing artist. I am leaving this one star review to warn potential customers by telling them about my unprofessional experience with another artist working here. Up until now, I had been a loyal client of Jaimeson's for over a year. I thought he was a great artist and a great guy. When I had a consultation for a large back piece we were going to start, I brought in a picture I found off the internet for reference. I told him I didn't want the exact picture (because who would want the same exact tattoo as someone else, right?)but just to use the general idea and for him to tweak it and I gave him the freedom to turn it into his own style. Four sessions later and my huge back piece is complete and I leave the shop very satisfied. However, only two weeks later and the piece is just barely even healed, he posts on Instagram my EXACT SAME tattoo that he did on someone ELSE! Granted, the placement was different, but the style and design were completely identical. I don't know if this new client saw the picture he posted of my tattoo and came to him and said she wanted it too or what but she has it now. I briefly commented saying how it was the same as mine and his response was "well she brought in the same exact reference picture, don't think you're the only one." Okay well even if she brought in the same picture, you can't come up with more than one design off one reference? I don't know if he was being lazy or incapable, but my tattoo (which takes up a huge amount of my body I might add) designed for me with my own special meaning to it is on someone else's body forever now. And to make matters worse, since she went to the same shop, I know she even lives in the same area as me. What he did was messed up, I mean I thought it went without saying that artists shouldn't tattoo the same custom work on different clients. Isn't that just general common sense tattoo etiquette? I will be finding a different artist to go to for my future work. So please be careful on choosing artists for custom pieces, you don't want a tattoo that everybody else has.
