My uncle was visiting here from Australia, he called this shop and a snotty girl thought he was prank calling her because of his austrian accent and cussed him out and then found his number on caller IDand texted him F**k off mate!! Used them in the past for rentals and purchases, never had bad service though often talked down to gear wise which is somewhat understandable since they probably see a lot of newbies but this year was something else. Trish was super rude, maybe stressed over all the COVID rules. The man helping us said out loud that dealing with rentals was his least favorite part of the job as if we were causing him too much trouble by renting there. They wouldn't rent to my 16 yr old which is fine to have company policies but then almost refused to rent to my husband suspicious that he was just getting it for the 16 yr old! The whole experience sucked. Won't go back until they have new employees. Bought the gloves I was going to purchase from them online instead for 1/3 less than their price. read more

Super helpful staff! They take reservations for gear over the phone. I had never been ice climbing before so I knew I'd need gear to try. They rent crampons, boots, and axes and will definitely take the time to make sure they fit well, including letting you swap out gear during your rental period if it's not working out. You can even return gear early and they'll refund you for the charge (which is only applied upon pickup). The biggest selling point is that they have a huge selection of gear in stock for you to try out and try on before you commit to your purchase (caveat: as usual, climbing gear is not returnable). Also, their staff is super knowledgeable and patient. Ice climbing equipment isn't cheap, but their rental gear is actual stuff you would consider buying rather than the dregs. I will be back for my future rental needs! read more

This used to be one of my favorite stops in Ouray. I love their cute hats and don't even mind that they are a touch overpriced. But today, the owner rudely approached my kids asking if they were "all on the WiFi now" after they asked and one of the teens was given the password by the cashier. Keep in mind they were quietly sitting to the side of the store out of the way behaving. And only 1 phone was connected. When I approach & ask what the issue was she says she is concerned about the WiFi usage as it's how they run their cash register. A. Maybe don't give out the password if it's such a concern. B. Maybe don't approach people's children. C. I certainly won't be back there spending my money. They cute overpriced hats can be purchased online. Ask yourself why people don't shop in small town tourist traps ... check your customer service. read more

I was about to buy a guide book and crampons. I asked to use their bathroom. The young woman behind the counter (glasses and black hair) told me "We don't have one. The nearest one is at The Chocolate Mouse." I told them I would take my business (both kinds!) elsewhere. Generally, climbing shops understand that many of their customers have traveled long distances, and are willing to let them use the facilities. (I worked at a climbing shop in the past, and am a Friends of Ouray Ice Park member. They are obviously happy to take your money, but not to provide the most basic accommodation for their customers. My wife and I stopped by this shop on our way to Telluride to hike Via Ferrata. The owner spent 5-10 minutes with me going over some maps of the area (hiking and 4 wheel drive) and also giving us some great advice about hiking our first 14er. She then had an employee named Page spend another 15-20 minutes with us going over the necessary gear to hike Via Ferrata. I have been an outdoors enthusiast for just at 50 years, whether it was hiking, backpacking, rock or ice climbing. During that time one of my favorite indulgences has been visiting various mountain outfitters whether locally or while on vacation. Of all the retail sites I have visited over that half century (more than 100), Ouray Mountain Sports has always been my favorite shop, and I visit it every time I am in Ouray. The store offers an incredible variety of products in the categories it supports, and the staff seem well schooled on each item. They know their stuff, and they only offer the type of items that enthusiasts and pros are willing to bet their life on. There are two great mountain stores in the town where I live, but how I wish they were as excellent as OMP, since it sets the standard. read more

This is a fantastic shop with lots of functional and cute sport gear. We rented snow shoes and they were great. Only drawback is that they were 1 set short for my party, but the gear was good and only slightly overpriced for rental ($15 for poles and shoes). A great store! Very friendly and welcoming to people from all over. The pricing for ice climbing gear was surprisingly competitive (actually, I bought a set of picks for less than I could find online!!!!!-unbelievable for a boutique shop). Also, they sell consignment ice climbing gear so you can buy your first set of axes and crampons cheaper than anywhere except maybe ebay (but at OMS you can inspect the gear before purchase!) Finally, and unllike anywhere that I know of in my State of California, you can rent ice climbing gear at OMS!!! I couldn't believe it- most other companies are too worried about liability to rent "climbing equipment" and so you have to invest between $1,000 to $2,000 just to try ice climbing (between boots, crampons, ice axes...).
