We were there in August and used Pagosa Outside for tubing on the San Juan! We had the BEST time!! Wasn't crowded at all this time of year!! I was worried the water would be too cold in August...,it was definitely cold, but once we got in we were fine and didn't even notice it was cold. The hippie dips were so nice once we got to them!! This was one of our favorite things we did on our 18 day trip through Colorado!! We're actually planning to do it again next August!! The staff was amazing'! The pictures they took are hilarious and I will treasure those memories and laughs forever!! Remember to wear some kind of shoes that secure to your feet! We ordered our tubes online 3 days earlier. We showed up at 11am and picked up our two double tubes and one XL tube. The customer service was awesome. We got well fitting life vests for my 6 and 7 year old. I do have a couple recommendations. I am not the smallest human being on the plant nor am I the biggest. The XL tube is 100% needed for us fluffy folks. I took an XL down the second half of our float and was in heaven. Prior to the XL I was in a double with my 7 year old. That 100% was NOT a party. I could not get down in the tube low enough for it to be comfortable. Also, the river wasn't high so we bottomed out every 2.5 seconds. It make for a workout. Next time I would get myself an XL tube and my kid a regular size tube and link together. We got in at Riff Raff on the Rio and got out at Yamaguchi. We bungy corded the double tubes to the top of our van and but the single inside. It was an adventure we will not soon forget! read more

We were lucky to catch a rafting trip in late June because the rains brought the river levels up. The river was at 650 CFS. My 10 and 12 year old went on this trip with us and it was perfect for first timers (all of us). Pagosa Outside provided everything: drop off and pick ups on the river, water booties, life vests and waterproof chest covers (perfect for the cold water). You can also buy shirts, caps and other water resistant supplies in their shop. IMO, they had some of the best designed t-shirts and caps so if you are looking for souvenirs, check them out. We had a great guide (Ed) who instructed us well and pointed out sites as we went down the river. This ride lasted about 1 hour and was the highlight of the trip. So much fun! You can also rent tubes from them when the river runs slower. The water is COLD, but nice on a warm day. Support this local business and have a fun time while at it! read more

Processed my reservation yesterday online for a 3 pm pickup today. My 9-year old son and I rented 2 single tubes, 2 life vests, and water shoes for him, all for just over $50. Totally worth every penny. We had so much fun. The employees were all very friendly and helpful. They provided great suggestions for best options for us to enter and exit the river in relation to my concerns about needing to assist my son in and out. Suggestions by the check-in employee were spot on. She also did a great job of expressing that the River gauge was at "really high" so there was close to a 50% of flipping when going over each of the small rapids. The email confirmation provided all the needed info to be aware of in regards to the dangers/concerns when tubing. The best part about this business is that it's perfectly located in the heart of town, right across the street from the river. So you can grab your tube and be floating down the river 2 min's later. We did not take advantage of the shuttle service option since we had other things on our schedule this morning, so only had a couple hours to set aside for tubing/floating this afternoon .....but that option would be awesome if you have several hours, then you can float much longer since you don't need to worry about walking back up river for each float. They use those large 15 passenger vans with huge blow-up unicorns and swans on top so they are easy to spot when headed down river. read more

My family went on a rafting trip with Pagosa Outside yesterday. It was fantastic! We've experience bad guides and bad guide companies in the past--you know the ones that seem like they are run by nomad carnies. This trip was the exact opposite. We took the "splash and dash" which is about 45 minutes on the water. Half of the time is gentle drifting and sightseeing and the other half, through town, includes rapids and splashes. Everyone from the front desk, to the folks handing out the gear, to the porters to the guides were friendly, professional, and knowledgeable. Their all-inclusive price is exactly that. You even get a ton of pictures afterwards. The safety briefing was legit. I felt confident that if I went overboard or had to help someone else who had, I knew what to do. Our guide made sure we had fun and learned something too. Local environmental activities, snow melt, and wildlife facts were all included. Finally, my some and I were able to "ride the bull"--sit on the front of the raft--through rapids. We have pictures to prove it. This was definitely worth the price. read more

We booked the river tubing rental and had a great time! We chose to walk 1/3 of a mile up to the malt shop and entered the river there, about a 20 min walk. Tips for tubing, grab the included wet shoes, consider a life preserver and maybe even a helmet if the water is high. A few of us did flip over at the very last rapid, but you can easily just get out as soon as you see the hot springs/tubs on the right side. Grandma only ended up doing it once, but the rest in our group did it 2-3 times, lots of fun! read more

Had an amazing time! This trip we decided to try a mountain bike adventure. My first time, I was super nervous I'd bust my @$s and go home broken... The female staff member at the desk when we stopped in to inquire more with was amazing! She was very helpful in assessing which ride would be best suited for our capabilities. We received great instruction on what to wear and bring. Her name escapes me The tour was a reasonable price. When we arrived the next day for our tour everything went great. Zach was our guide. He was informative, friendly, fun and helpful. The ride up Nipple Mountain was about 45 minutes, along the way he gave interesting tif bits which varied between history of the area to recommendations for while we were in town. Once we began the ride he follow a bit behind with the van in case anyone needed assistance. The ride was fantastic, the views breathtaking. This trip made for a great day and a new found hobby. The employees were incredibly friendly and helpful. We rented 4 inflatable kayaks and they included an electric pump as well as two manual pumps to top them off. The life jackets and paddles were included as well. Booking online was fast and easy and you can even see availability of the equipment. They have very generous pick up and return times. Every single person we dealt with was so helpful and pleasant. I'm kind of (ok, not kind of, really) a baby when it comes to anything even remotely adventurous, but I felt super comfortable with this group. The shuttle service is really great. The spot on the water is nice. Mostly calm with a few dips. The tubes they use are great, too. The net on the inside made things feel more secure for this wimp! Definitely recommend renting water shoes if you do not have your own. Having them made the experience a little easier. We had a blast and will definitely be back if we are in the area! read more

This was part of my 30th Birthday present, something I have always wanted to do. We did Mesa Canyon, as it turned out, the last trip of the season due to the water levels. Chandler was our guide, he was great & lots of fun. In hindsight we could have done a harder trip, but never having done it before, I wasn't sure. There were kids on some of the rafts so when we saw all of them waiting we knew it wouldn't be too bad. There was lots of great views through the canyon and town, and very reasonably priced. All in all, a fantastic morning out. I would advise, that if you don't take snacks, have a huge breakfast or have something in the car for when you get back, after we were done we were starving!! read more

Wonderful adventure with Pagosa Outside. We had rented equipment from them before but this was out first big Rafting trip. The San Juan River was at a near all-time high of 3000 cfs the first week of June. They were outstanding about the safety brief, made sure everyone had warm water gear, checked out safety equipment just like an Army Jumpmaster and made sure we had a safe and fun trip on the Mesa Canyon run about 10-12 miles down the San Juan. Our guide Zak was the best. He worked hard, shared his knowledge of the town and River and kept the boat safe and pointed downstream. Pickup van/trailer was there on time and everything functioned like clockwork (I really think there are some military folks in the business!). I think the prices were more than reasonable. Also the store had excellent bling inventory including excellent clothing and shades. The ladies tending the store could not have been nicer or more helpful. read more

It was a beautiful ride down the mountain that Ashton drove us to the top off and then followed us down, checking on us throughout the ride. Wether they are helping you pick out the right discs for golf or explaining how their kayaking trips work the staff was very helpfully and understanding. I don't swim and being in fast water kinda terrifies me, but a couple weekends ago watching people whitewater rafting in Durango convinced me that I had to go before the water levels dropped for good after the snow melt. I think we missed the maximum high levels by two weeks, but it was still an incredibly fun time. I did some research between doing a trip in Durango or doing one in Pagosa Springs...and honestly, I don't think there really is a notable difference. Prices are comparable, and in the end, it came down to which worked better with our schedules. Pagosa Outside is located right downtown Pagosa Springs in a hubbub of activity. They do whitewater rafting, kayaking, mountain bike renting, disc golf, and tubing. Whitewater rafting adventures cost anywhere from $34-$250...and they really do have a variety of different trips, also dependent on the season. May and June are the best times to go rafting, and you can even track the water levels of the rivers on different websites. They'll outfit you with splash suits if you want, and water shoe rentals are $2.50. Tubing is in the late summer, which runs $12.00 for 2 hours, and is an activity I can't wait to come back for. So being the whitewater rafting virgin that I was...I dragged a friend along, who actually incidentally does have impressive whitewater rafting skills as he's being doing it since he was a kid all over the western states and has some interesting stories. After making him promise that he wouldn't let me drown (haha), sitting through the safety videos, and him volunteering us to sit at the front (which resulted in him promising a second time not to let me drown), we were off for an adventure of a lifetime. I do have some boating and rowing experience, but this totally blew everything out of the water. It's easy to see that Pagosa Outside works like clockwork. Our guide, Kyle, knew the ins and outs of the river. And no, I learned that it's pretty hard to fall out, especially if you tuck your feet in where you're supposed to tuck them in at. We got splashed...and the water is still so very cold, but you don't notice it that much with the adrenaline. I'm already thinking of doing another one next year. read more

Parents, I wouldn't suggest taking kids under five. My seven year old was a little scared and my five year old loved it. Pagosa Outside was great. We visited Pagosa in June 2018 and had booked the Mesa Canyon rafting but due to the water levels it was cancelled. The staff notified us and were very accommodating with booking us on the River Bend trip. Unfortunately the day before we were scheduled to go I got food poising. We called Pagosa Outside who once again was great to deal with and moved us to later in the week with absolutely no hassle. Once we got to the river on the day of the trip my son got extremely nervous. Our guide Ashton was great with him and very reassuring. He was very knowledgeable of the river and the history. Ive been coming to Pagosa Springs with family and friends for several years. Ive taken people rafting every time we come. We have always used Pagosa Outside as our outfitter. We have always been treated very well, and have a wonderful time. I just brought my family (my wife and I have sons 19 & 21) and two families with kids ranging from 7-16. The day was cold about 40 degrees and rainy. We were told how to prepare when I called the day before and the guides even gave a few people some of their gear to make them more comfortable. So I'm not gonna lie, we got off on a pretty rocky start with Pagosa Outside. We wanted to do the tubing but the water was too dangerous, obviously not their fault, so we decided to rent paddle boards and do the rafting. But unfortunately the only person in the shop was a girl who only started a week ago and didn't know quite how to check us out or give us the paddle boards. So we just decided to do the rafting. She accidentally told us the wrong time so we came in way early expecting to go rafting to find out we have to wait longer. But the girl and staff were still so sweet and apologized over a dozen times. Such a sweet staff. When we actually went rafting our guide Matt, was so amazing and fun, and we had such a blast!
