When you're trying to improve your health, buy more organic items and shop less of the mainstream overly processed food, it is best to put yourself in an environment where there is limited temptation. This is the reason I made the Outpost my GO TO grocery store. Fruits and veggies are fresh. I love the varieties of micro greens (zesty is my fave). Whenever I cook using produce from Outpost, my partner notices the quality of the dish. He used to claim that it doesn't make a difference. However, after many delicious home-cooked meals, he can't argue with me! When I don't have time to cook, I love the Meals To Go - the roasted chicken, macaroni and cheese, baguette sandwiches. I'm on the fence between 4 and 5 stars. So this is a 4.5 star review, rounded up. And if I really have to think of the things that make up that half-star difference, they're really pretty minor. The hot bar closes at 7, and they're usually out of items earlier than that. And some items in other areas of the store are a little pricier than they would be at other similar establishments. That's mostly it. So let's talk about the positives: 1. Kombucha on tap. I never really envisioned myself getting on the kombucha wagon. And I still would call myself a curious fellow-traveler rather than a full-blown enthusiast. I had tried it before in the bottle and liked it ok but wouldn't seek it out all the time. But this on-tap thing is really kind of a neat concept. It's from a Wisconsin-based company and is on tap at a few regional locations. It comes in original and seasonal flavors, recently such as cranberry and orange cream. It's refreshing and different. 2. Decent beer selection, including many local brews, with fair prices and regular specials. 3. Tasty food, both ready to eat and available to go. There's a small dining area. I especially enjoyed the caprese tomato-mozzarella sandwich in the store and the Mediterranean lunch box, with hummus and pita, orzo pasta salad, feta, and olives was perfect to take to work. If I'm hungry and too late for the hot bar, sushi is good too. It's good quality for being from a grocery store. 4. A decent selection of natural prepared foods, including some I don't really see elsewhere. I haven't shopped the meat or produce sections thoroughly, but they look interesting too. 5. Ditto the beauty products. 6. This one is more subjective, but my cats really like the Halo/Spot's Stew cat food. I may have seen it one or two other places, but I get it here because it's on my way home from work. I have been fully meaning to come in in the morning for coffee and possibly breakfast. I was visiting from out-of-town, taking care of family for a couple weeks, and frequented this store because it was close by, easy to find, and had everything I needed. Their selection of organic, local and fair trade is awesome. You can be an owner of the co-op and get extra perks. I love 99.8% of the staff. They are super helpful and kind, compassionate and respectful. If they dont have it they might be able to get it for you, all you have to do is ask. I love the incense selection, the gifts and cards. When I was primarily g/f they were helpful in finding decent replacements. When I was mostly d/f they were a nice place to check for dairy free options and I found some things to stick with even today when I can have dairy again. Almost everyone I've come into contact with at any of the outpost locations. Milwaukee, Bayview, Wauwatosa has been awesome. Looking forward to checking out the Mequin location. read more

Bear with me, Yelp Milwaukee. Bear with me while the not-so-secret hippie in me wins today. It's beating out any goth or angry or hipster or normal or whatever. We're all unique snowflakes comprised of multiple, varying facets, remember? I'm going to yoga later, I EFFING LOVE OUTPOST. I just ate a Goraw Banana Bread Flax Bar (gluten-free, nut-free, wheat-free, all live) and it kind of sucked. But that's not Outpost's fault... it's mine for buying it knowing I wouldn't like it. But I'm full and it's all super-good for me and stuff, so it did the job. Anywhoo... Outpost is a beautiful glowing haven for mindful food consumption. Organic produce is bountiful. Local + fair-trade products are denoted as such. A great deli with smoothies and wheatgrass and yummy sandwiches and salads. Bulk nuts and granola and quinoa and holy-freaking-hippie. Even a nice beer/wine selection? GTFO. I always forget about Outpost on Captiol, but I'm super stoked that I was reminded as of this past weekend. Whole Foods, you have a pretty serious contender in my book now now. (Not that it matters... About 2 yrs ago, after years of being asked "are you an owner?" I bit the bullet and became one. For one reason only: supplements. The outpost has an extensive array of vitamins, herbs, different soy, whey, hemp, etc protein powders; and an excellent flaxseed product collection. I'm of the belief that if you have a problem, any supplement can help you out. Sure, its magical thinking to some degree, but whatevs. You also get a supplement punch card as an owner, and if you spend about $100 during a year on them it makes sense to become an owner. Things the outpost is also good for: coconut products. They have oils, yogurts, juices, waters, milks etc if you're convinced of the magical power of the coconut. They have a really nice collection of tea and wines. Personal care products (soap, oils etc) are also well represented. The deli/bakery area is nice. Not so good: produce. You'd think it be great- its a health food/organic place, right? Honestly I've never had good luck with fruits and veggies here. Truly a better experience at any pick n save. Also not so hot imo is the frozen food area. I can get most of the Annies kitchen and veggie burger products at PNS for less. So the verdict? I'm an owner but only come here once in a while for special items. I couldn't do all or even half my grocery shopping here. Yes, it is pricey, but the items I really want to buy here are very worth it. I still also NEVER frequent the whole foods and would always pick this place (either the riverwest or tosa locations) over them. read more

I really like Outpost. I normally just stop in for "specialty" type foods - gluten-free items, kombucha, and food items for gifts. They have a large selection of sushi and it is by far the best grocery-store/pre-packaged sushi I have had. Their small gluten-free pizzas also in this refrigerator section are amazing!!! A non-gf eater (me) cannot even taste that it is gluten free. In fact, all the goods I've purchased from Outpost have been very high quality and delicious. I would love to try their deli/hot bar, but it seems like they clean that up earlier than I am able to get here in the evening so I'll have to make a point to stop by earlier in the day. I'd say prices are fair, especially for the quality of the food/beverages. I've noticed the same brand items at other fancy nearby grocery stores are actually a dollar or two more. If I could afford it, I would definitely shop here for more of my everyday groceries. read more

What a cute and useful little store! Reminds me a lot of Sprouts on the west coast, but more intimate. It's got Whole Foods prices, but all in all a much more pleasant experience. Their bulk bins are very comprehensive, everything from the regular rice/grains/nuts to more complicated snacks like mango almonds. They also have a wide selection of spices, tea and coffee in bulk! I didn't find the prices too bad. I purchased about 8 or 9 items for $22, but I am also careful about what I buy. I definitely would not go here for everything on my list as it wouldn't be affordable, but for specialty/health/bulk food items this is a great place to check out! read more

Dear Outpost, I've shunned you for the past year that I've been in Milwaukee, but now I am taking a leap and embracing you as my main grocer. Wow. We stopped here because there was a level 3 charger for our electric vehicle to charge in the parking lot. We decided to grab a sandwich and coffee from the cafe. We split a Bacon avocado sandwich on the gluten-free bread. It was delicious! I also ordered an americano with cream and YUM! The person that took our order was patient and kind. The store was clean and inviting but due to stupid Covid we just waited for our order and ate outside, resisting the urge to explore more. We will definitely stop here again. I love eating healthy food, and I love buying groceries at Outpost. A few years ago, I realized in my struggles with weight that for me, some diet wasn't going to be the answer. I realized I was going to have to change my mind completely about what I eat, how I cook, & even what I consider to be food. As I started along that journey I read many books & articles that suggested I visit a local organic food market to get a better idea of what health food actually looks/tastes like. At that suggestion, I found Outpost Natural Foods. The first time I shopped there I was a little overwhelmed at all of the brands I'd never heard of & products I'd never seen before. I was also a little surprised at the price, but I do realize why organic/natural foods cost more than regular supermarket fare. (For me, the price tradeoff in the improved quality of health & wellness is worth it.) Having a place like this near my neighborhood made my journey to learn more about healthy food remarkably easy, tasty and fun. I began shopping at Outpost regularly, & eventually shopped less & less at other traditional grocery stores. Never been to Outpost? Go see why. They carry the same kinds of things you'd find at a regular grocery store (including meat, fresh produce, bread/milk/eggs/cheese, etc.) but unlike a lot of the major brands in most supermarkets that will throw anything in a box or can, pump it full of chemicals & high fructose corn syrup, & call it food, the brands they carry are companies that are committed to healthier food & healthier lifestyles. There's an abundance of fresh organic produce to choose from, & great selection. The customer service staff is knowledgeable about the food they carry, because they eat it too. All of the folks who work there are friendly & helpful, even the security guard! Yeah, I said it already but I'll say it again: I love Outpost. After visiting both the Seward Co-op and Wedge Community Co-op in Minneapolis and the Willy Street Co-op in Madison, I must admit that I am a little biased. However, I think that Milwaukee should have a co-op just as amazing as the aforementioned co-ops and Outpost just isn't there yet. At the same time, there is a lot that I love about the Outpost. What it's lacking: not enough bulk- no bulk soaps (natural dish detergents, all-purpose cleaners), or personal care products (body wash, lotions). No hot/cold food bar. (OKAY, I KNOW THAT WASN'T MUCH) What it does amazingly: Joey's tofu steak (sorry, my vegan taste buds couldn't resist!), diverse staff which I truly believe is wonderfully unique among co-ops, fresh produce, very wide selection or natural, organic and vegan foods! They also honor memberships to other co-ops. Bottom line: Outpost is awesome! I honestly love this place. But, after visiting other co-ops I feel that they could add just a bit to their already great co-op to make it outstanding! read more

It is hard rating Outpost. On the one hand Outpost is a locally-based co-op that gives back to its members, provides healthy alternatives, and has lots of organic options. But on the other hand I'm such a cheap bastard that I cringe every time I look at the sticker prices on their stuff. Since I'm not rolling in cash I opt to garden and I support a CSA in summer. I hit Trader Joe's for their organic bananas, avocados, wines, and nuts. However TJ's hauls their crap in from the other side of the planet. The profits are piling up in some headquarters in California instead of right here in Milwaukee. So there are tradeoffs to be sure. Things that Outpost does well include cheap organic eggs, organic breads, local produce, and great prepared foods. The cafe is certainly worth the stop. I recommend everyone give Outpost a try, and if you decide to join up they waive fees when you pay for two years up front. I sleep a little better and eat a LOT better by picking up a big portion of my necessities here. read more

Lunchtime... sandwichtime. I asked Nathan at the deli what he recommended, and he disarmingly suggested the meatiest, greasiest sandwiches. My loins cried, "yes, yes!" but my guilty conscience beat back the loins and I ordered a Golden Temple sandwich. It was all vegetables on multi-grain bread, so I felt smug for the rest of the day. The avocado slices were fat and perfectly ripe. I was bummed that the balsamic dressing soaked the bread, making it unpleasantly juicy and likely to fall apart. On the bright side, it came with a little cup of potato salad and a pickle spear. read more

Everytime I go to outpost I love it more and more. I always find a new section or local items that make this place the best around. First off their produce section is great. Organic and local produce, cheapest honeycrisp apples I've ever seen, delicious looking premade salads too. Bulk food aisle. That's right a whole entire aisle! Both sides! Just bins upon bins of bulk grains, beans, nuts, flours, soup starters, dried fruits, coffee, and more! Some of the ingredients even come with a recipe card! This is heaven. Their beer and wine section always has something new and a featured brew of the month. Their deli counter is usually empty by the time I've gotten there but there sandwhiches are delicious and finally got a chicken turnover last time. Yumm. To top it all off they even have my favorite kombucha on tap! Tapuat door county kombucha has two flavors on tap and you can buy fresh or premade growlers! This is the most exciting thing I've seen at a grocery store in a long time. Definitely my grocery store of choice. read more

Oh I actually enjoy grocery shopping here. The produce is competitively priced but grocery tends to be high when items aren't on sale. I tend to buy produce here and things on sale and then buy grocery usually at Whole Foods or Woodmans. One thing I'm in love with is their hot bar. Sooooooo good!!!! The flavors are way better than Whole Foods, which definitely needs to step up their game. My only complaint is that they often run out of food rather early (6:30 pm) so later dinner plans usually have to be carried out at Whole Foods instead. Also their normal prices on grocery could be a bit cheaper too. I've been an Outpost owner for years and years and really like the store. read more

Trying to eat a littler better which means I have to shop a little all over the place. I'm on a tight budget and try my best to make a dollar stretch to be able to buy a variety of things to fill the fridge for the week. I've never been to Outpost before and today was my first experience. Seems like a neighborhood grocery store inside, thought I would feel out of place but felt right at home. Prices did not seem extreme to me and seemed reasonable for the items that I was looking for today. I would say if you want to eat local, this place does a nice job of staying local with products when possible. Nice produce selection with what is currently in season. Outpost seems especially great for items that are weird and hard to find. Point in case... I needed.... Vital Wheat Gluten (what the?!) to be able to make some clean bread, and voila! Two options to choose from even! I had been to about three other grocery stores so that made me really happy. Still need to visit more and will update with additional visits. read more

I can only speak for what they have to offer for lunch. Their sandwiches are pretty decent and yummy. I usually get the turkey & bacon sandwich - which was delicious. I have a variety of pasta salads...it usually hits the spot and are pretty tasty. Outpost's chips are good, especially their BBQ chips. Outpost is one of the rare natural foods co-ops that is large enough that you can do all your grocery shopping, with plenty of choices of brands, without spending a fortune. Nice variety of large national brands as well as local products, both organic and non-organic. Employees are readily available and knowledgeable. There is a full coffee and juice bar, and extensive prepared foods offerings. The line at the coffee bar can be long and slow, because the coffee bar also serves as a checkout register for people buying prepared foods and bakery (and other stuff too). There should be a dedicated line for people ordering drinks, or people who just want to buy a coffee should be able to skip to the front. Twice I have gone in hoping to get a coffee to drink while doing the rest of my shopping, and both times the line was so long that I gave up. read more

I do not understand why I can by a double cheeseburger at McDonalds for $1.19 but If I want to eat healthy I cannot buy one head of lettuce here. This Food System is broken, it doesn't work. In here you pay 70% for packaging, 20% to transport it here, and 5% to the overhead and 5% for the actual product. Outpost is my main squeeze. I love to shop there - it's the only place I've found that's actually fun. I love the produce - way over the top w/ local and I've never had a problem w/ freshness. I shop at both this location and the State St. store in Tosa and love both for different reason. The eastside store is the original - great for people watching and I love the cafe. The Tosa store is super convenient and Iove the meat dept. I've never found it more expensive than W.foods, just way better and way friendlier. This is my "home" Outpost store. Not only did I sign up as an owner of the co-op here, they are my go to for answering any questions I've had (and do a great job getting me the answers!) This location has a great selection of wine and beer, in addition to great produce and other local products. I often purchase items from the bulk bin (tea, coffee, grains, rice, dried fruit, flour) and love the variety of sprout seeds I can choose from too. They have a cafe area with a hot bar and deli case for great grab and go items, or a delicious lunch. I also grab fresh juices, made to order, to store at home for a special breakfast. Check out the natural health and beauty area for great smelling soaps and oils too. They also make great gifts! I try to buy local and organic. At Outpost that is one stop shopping Will you pay more than your chain grocery store? Yes!!! Will the items you buy be full of scary chemicals etc? No!!! I don't know why organic food costs more. There are endless theories. I think the better taste and health benefits are worth the extra money though. They have a huge bulk food area. Pack up as much granola and seeds as your heart desires. Their salad bar is always fresh and a great deal. I probably need a 12 step program for their French dressing. I love the dressing so much I have requested it via email twice and been shot down. It's ok Outpost I still love you despite the burn! They also have a hot bar with various items. They are good in a pinch but nothing to write home about. The smoothies are a lovely treat. They used to make sandwiches to order. Recently, though they have them pre-made in the cooler. We have gone shopping here for years, I've come here when I was 4, tapping on the water jug lids pretending they were buttons. So I've been here a lot. And now that im older and noticing more stuff I've realized that the store tends very well to people with food allergies. As I am lactose intolerant, ive found lactaid ice cream, lactose free yogurt and milk,and lactose free pizza. The one small problem is the price, because everything is very organic and good its a little more expensive than usual. But the price is all worth it. Its nice to see that Outpost is retaining their good employees again. For a long time the same, fabulous people worked there. Suddenly as Outpost grew, they didn' t seem to care about their long time employees anymore. I saw some working at Beans & Barley, then Trader Joe's. Weird! But it seems better now, get called by my first name again when I walk in. Only one problem and it's a BIG one. They have a nice deli, with vegetarian & vegan food offered. But in their infinite wisdom, somebody has put the dead chickens roasting right behind it! Nice move... NOT Makes me sick to even walk back there let alone order food. This place is great, if you love waiting 20 minutes to check out a kombucha with one other person in line. I swear to god there's something about the employees and/or system at The Outpost that makes for the most inefficient service ever. When you finally make it to check out and your hair is grey, you'll get asked if you're "an owner" which doesn't mean you're a shareholder or that you can tell the crust punk stock boy to improve his personal hygiene, it means you pay 40 bucks a year to get modest discounts on that shitty flavor of tofu no one else wanted. The prices are right on par with Whole Foods, before the amazon merger. The service is usually brought to you by an ANTIFA member and/or gender studies major who doesn't just hate you, but hates working in general so don't take it personally. Unless you're lucky enough to get that one dude whose relentlessly helpful and knowledgeable about everything in the store, he's the shit and should probably get paid more for pulling everybody else's weight. The deli food is rather unremarkable but those various flavors of raw cashews are the absolute bomb, even though they're like 50 dollars a pound. But hey, if supporting a local business exceeds all of these things then have it. As for me? I'm happy to patronize Trader Joe's with their cheap limited stock, quick checkouts, friendly staff banter and 80's music. read more

What I get at The Outpost: Supplements. Not only are their prices good on their own supplements, but they have any supplement you can think of with about 3-4 choices in different brands. I also get the ground flax seed that lasts for a couple months as well. Also, their sushi is really good (for grocery store sushi) as well as their salad bar and soups!
