Outpost Foods is an excellent choice if you are looking for organic and natural products that are curated by people who walk the talk. This coop (which I am not a member of) works really hard to provide vendors and products that are focused on locally grown, sustainable products, at a reasonable price. Been to this location several times and have always been impressed with the selection, quality, and service. On this trip, they were highlighting (and sampling) a new local cheese purveyor, located in Oak Creek (Alpinage). This is an example of Outposts interests in promoting people and products that they believe in, and have similar values. While I am not a regular shopping, I am always impressed. read more

I love Tipi Produce's carrots, we buy the 5# bags all winter. Their organics are outstanding. The staff is friendly. One gentleman at the check out is always in a chipper, and my daughter adores him. The place is clean and well lit. It's worthwhile to become an owner too. read more

Love the produce, home made deli and bakery at East Capitol Drive store; checkers up front do a great job as well, but manager is rarely seen. At times ambiance leaves much to be desired. There are particular workers who YELL back and forth with each other and startle customers..it is extremely rare to walk in a store and all of a sudden there is extremly loud yelling going on between employees; I have mentioned it to no avail. There was also a time one particular employee continued joking in exteme loud voice with others and blocked me from getting through an aisle; manners are poor..but management needs to manage, train and uphold rules of common courtesy in presence of customers. read more

I've been an Outpost customer for a lot of years. They have - bar none - the best selection of organic produce. Their meat department is also superb. I dropped this a star because of consistent issues with pricing accuracy. Today I bought a pint of half-and-half - the sign in the fridge case said it was $3.49. The price I was charged was $3.69. I probably go to outpost 2-3 times per week because I like to get fresh veggies every day. Or maybe because I love this little spot so much :) Organic produce can get little pricey, but I try to get what really matters organic. Outpost has a decent variety of produce and seasonal products. And the best of all, buyers support local farmers. The juice bar is fantastic, and they can customize any juice adding some extras. My favorite is the green dream with extra ginger cause I like it spicy. Bulk products are good quality too and a little cheaper than regular brands. My weakness is the bakery, and they have amazing cookies and pies! Healthy options are available too like their sweet potato muffins: just the perfect balance of sweet and smooth flavor. I am part of the owners, so sometimes I get discounts and special prices available only to the owner members. Staff is super friendly and very helpful. read more

I only shop here occasionally when visiting family while in search of vegan food. They have a few items but nothing really to write home about. Most of the items I can get at other stores quite a bit cheaper. I came looking for healthy, animal product free premade food so I don't have to cook. Very few choices. read more

I've finally found Outpost's place in my life. I maintain that their prices are a bit crazy for grocery type stuff - I often find better pricing for like items at Trader Joe's or Fresh Thyme. (I know, I know - ship local and all that but c'mon guys) Anyway, they're now one of my regular lunch stops - why? Well, there's a fresh and tasty salad bar full of delicious things. Three to four soups daily, and most are vegetarian. There's a whole case of deli salads, and the counter has stuff like pizzas and panini. There's even a hot bar with the most delicious Brazilian cheese bread ON EARTH. So I can build a good-for-me salad (with their homemade creamy garlic dressing!), add a few pieces of that cheese bread to cancel out any healthiness and grab a cold tea for like $8. I like it. I like it a lot. Other things I like - they carry the loose leaf tea filters I use (they're unaccountably hard to find and $2 less per box here) and their gluten free chocolate chip cookies are delightful. I don't have an adverse relationship with gluten - the cookies are just that good and are like $2 for a container of 5. read more

Depending on the day and time of day you come here, the service times can vary and also be prepared to answer the questions whether you are an Outpost owner or not, takes about 5-10seconds to answer if you know it's coming or a minute if your want to know more. The employees are often aloof on how outpost programs work (I.e. rewards) and the food takes an obnoxiously long period of time. We waited over twenty minutes for a very basic sandwich (and have waited similar periods on other visits as well). Do not stop in here for a "quick" bite. I will continue to visit as the quality of the food and store is wonderful, but I hope their training and expectations within the cafe for customer service improve. read more

After waiting 7 min on hold to find out if they had Sumanc in their self serve spices which is 10 steps away from the booth where Wendy answered the phone, I got hung up on when I asked her name. I had to call back and speak with Scott the front end "Customer Service" manager to ask the name of the girl who hung up on me. But instead of an apology for his ride staff member he made excuses and then I got the intimidation tone question "Well, Whats YOUR name?" and seemed bothered with my complaint saying "you seem upset!". Ummm ya, I have now been on the phone 15 min for a 2 min question. He said Wendy was very sorry! How about training Wendy, that people who spend 30-40% more for food want a service orientated exchanges with staff, not a feeling like Iam bothering them. You would think they would want to hear the issues that customers have with staff so they can coach and become a better customer focused store, but clearly they dont. Capital Dr and Good Hope have excellent friendly people who dont mind looking for products. This location is the worst at service, exceptions the Deli who are always gracious and wonderful. read more

Outpost is a great place to find healthy grocery options that meet pretty much every special dietary need. There are several locations spread around the city, so there should be one near you. The only downside is that they are more expensive than a place like Health Hut. They do have sales and specials, so there are some deals to be had. I typically stop in if I'm in the area or if I'm looking for a specific multi-vitamin that 2 of the three Health Hut stores I visit seem to no longer carry, so I had to pay more for it at Outpost. They also have a cafe so you can purchase sandwiches or hot food for dine-in or carry-out. I can't remember if you have to be an owner to shop there, but I am an owner of the co-op, so it's a non-issue. The stores almost always are busy when I visit, so there is certainly a need for what they do. read more

Ok, it's expensive....but the quality is worth it. Just for the fruit, veggies and meat - it offers much healthier options than the processed junk at metro mart. The staff is amazing. They are so nice and helpful, my son has always been offered a sticker and a piece of fruit before we begin shopping. They also have child-size shipping carts so my 3 year old has a blast helping me. It's a full grocery store with a fresh juice/smoothie bar, made to order sandwiches, sushi, soup/salad/hot bar, fresh bakery, bulk bins, and a great selection of prepared foods. The produce is absolutely beautiful, the best in the metro area. They carry an extensive selection of herbs and supplements. Service is generally pretty friendly, especially in the produce department. By shopping at a co-op, you're supporting the local community. Outpost has also received awards for being a great place to work. And, with so many organic options, you're buying food that's healthier for your body, farmers, and the environment. They have a great layout for easy shopping plus bulk bins and herbs, a juice bar, medicinal and body care section. You don't have to search out healthy food here, it's all good so making decisions is easy. Yeah. I'm one of those cloth bag-toting, organic produce-seeking, gourmet foodie-minded folks who believes that shopping at my local coop is just about the best thing since sliced bread. But, I've also got my standards. While Whole Foods often lives up to its nickname "Whole Paycheck," I've been impressed that Outpost has been able to keep its pricing very competitive, if not more affordable than it's competitors. I shop the State Street location most frequently, and I'm constantly impressed by the savvy employees, whose dedication to customer service means they're consistently going above and beyond the call of duty. Their produce section is alarmingly fresh -- great prices, and good turn-over means I don't have to worry about paying a premium for sub-par produce that is going to go bad in a day or two. I'm also impressed by their consistently great selection of local & artisan cheeses. Not only do they carry the staples (mozzarella, cheddar, monterey jack), but they also stock a nice variety of less common cheeses, including varietals from Carr Valley, Crave Brothers, and other great cheesemakers. In addition, they provide a nice selection of non-dairy & cheese alternatives. You can't beat Outpost when it comes to products catering to special diets -- including gluten-free and vegan. Their selection of alternative pastas and flours is one of the best in the city. Wine & beer prices aren't the best, and I've experienced a batch or two of beans from the bulk section that seemed to be older than they should be (took FORever to cook). Nonetheless, I'm pleased to be an owner of Outpost, and I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a grocery shopping experience that goes far beyond the basic. read more

I come here every day, sometimes multiple times a day. It's hard not to, it is just up the street from me. What can I say? JOIN YOUR LOCAL CO-OP. I get so many awesome things from this place. Local, fresh, you know where your food is coming from! You can actually learn about the farm your milk, veggies, etc. is coming from! And don't say it is "too expensive," it is not. Food at places like WalMart or Pick N Save shouldn't be that cheap! You are not paying for real food! As soon as you enter the aroma of the deli is in your face. My sister is an "owner" @ outpost they have great pre mixed salads fruits and vegetables. A big bulk section to buy what you need for coffee, nuts, grains, candy, snacks. The organic eggs are tasty. The prices are moderate and have acidophilus in a mini fridge. Large cookies chocolate chip were sold out oatmeal raisin cookies and peanut butter was still available. The staff are often busy stocking, however, they make a point to interact with the customers with eye contact and small talk. I leave the store happy and now I want to hug a tree. read more

I want to like Outpost more than I do and it's not Outpost's fault that I don't - I just feel uncomfortable when I'm in there and I do my best to get in and get out. I can never find what I need and I just feel silly and out of place. But this location is nice and convenient and has its own lot. I love how much stuff they have to purchase by the ounce or pound, so you're not stuck with a big bag of something you don't really need - especially because of course these are pricier products. It also allows you to sample things like tea so you can find exactly what you like. I just feel the layout isn't particularly intuitive and I needed like four things and walked in some circles and finally needed help finding one of them. I really need to get over my discomfort and find myself more at ease in Outpost - they have a lot to offer that you can't find elsewhere in the city, they do good work, I love the co-op concept and they're good folks. read more

One of my favorites is the Golden Temple sandwich. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Man, the highlight is the owner or manager or whatever who looks like a smaller version of Big Show. All fresh, many local, mostly organic, all delicious foods. The Outpost is really a prime source for eating natural foods around Milwaukee. Though it does cost to be an owner, it is a great investment in your health and wellness. I have yet to see a place around Milwaukee with cheaper prices on fresh organic foods. Owners get discounts on special items and there are perks year-round, but you don't need to be a member to shop there. This particular store was recently remodeled, and it is well-designed and functional. The staff is friendly, helpful and informative. You can go there for a meal in their cafe area or grab a coffee to go. They have a great bulk foods section and also several aisles dedicated to health and personal items. Thank god for Outpost! Essential for any vegan visiting Milwaukee with the hopes of cooking their signature dish for their family. One Christmas, I wanted to make a vegan quiche. There are now three Outpost Natural Foods locations in Milwaukee - the original East side location, the second in Tosa (the address listed here), and the newest on S. Kinnickinnic in Bayview. They are all similar in decor, layout and selection. They have a great deli/bakery area with some seating for the nearby lunch crowd, a nice wine and beer selection, great produce as well as a nice selection of dry foods. They also have a great variety of bulk items from soap and olive oil to different flours, flax seeds and interesting granola blends. I love shopping at the Outpost, there's always something interesting, the atmosphere is good and the staff are friendly and helpful. Their motto is something like "large enough to meet your needs and small enough to meet your neighbors," and it's true. I don't personally live in one of those neighborhoods, but it's almost a gathering place, much more appealing than the nearest mega Pick N' Save. Nothing against Whole Foods, but I truly hope that their opening on the East side this year will not affect the success of the Outpost and the Milwaukee area's other organic grocers like Good Harvest Market and the Health Hut. read more

What I love about Outpost is that they have the best assortment of vegan frozen treats and baked desserts. Furthermore, their smoothies are really awesome and filling, and make for a totally healthy lunch in the summertime. So why three stars, especially from a veggie eater? One reason I only give it three stars is because I'm not a huge fan of the soups, sandwiches and hot bar. In my opinion, the food should taste so much better than it does, especially since they have a plethora of local, delicious ingredients at their disposal. Another reason I only give it three stars is because I'm not an owner, and when I'm asked, I always feel like I'm not part of the cool kid club. I just don't live that close to an Outpost, and I don't think I would benefit much from being an owner. There are other small, local grocery stores really close to my house that have mastered the cafe/restaurant side of things, and carry a lot of the same groceries as Outpost. In the end, I still have a lot of respect for it's veggie friendly, local focus. read more

I formerly lived in Bay View and frequented that Outpost regularly. Always outstanding service there. The Tosa location is disappointing as far as service goes. The cashiers are not particularly friendly and I've stood around waiting as they chat among themselves while I wait for service. I ordered an item from their cafe that comes with a side at Bay View but doesn't in Tosa so I paid the same price but got less. I really don't enjoy this location and drive further to go to Bay View. read more

We are very lucky to have a place like Outpost in the community of Wauwatosa. It is a nice change from the mega grocery stores like Pick n Save next door and offers a good variety of specialty products that you might not find in those stores. I especially like the bulk food area and all the different choices of granola. The fresh produce area is where they shine. And winner, winner...a great beer and wine selection with lots of local brews. They have a really good bakery, great salad bar, coffee/juice bar and always a good selection of pre-made salads/sandwiches for take-out or you can dine in the cafe area inside or outside patio. The dining area is quaint and comfy, you don't feel like you are sitting in the middle of a grocery store. Outpost is a good place to find some interesting gift items too. They have soaps, lotions, candles, books, cards, garden stuff and even toys. I tend to check them out when I am looking for a unique gift. The staff is always helpful and friendly. I also like the fact that they take great care of the flowers and plants in the parking area. Prices are going to be a bit higher than the chain grocery stores, but if you become a member of the Co-op, you can get much better deals. I don't shop at Outpost enough to become a member...plus, I am allergic to soy and most legumes - this makes me a poor candidate for a vegetarian lifestyle. On the other hand, if you are a vegetarian, vegan or have allergies to milk and/or dairy, Outpost is a great place for you! read more

I no longer live in Milwaukee so I'm not a member but I'm glad they feature so many deals that are also open to non-members so I often stock up on those products when I'm in town shopping for fam. I usually go to the Bay View location, but I have a friend in this area so have stopped in a couple times for groceries....who am I kidding?
