In addition to apples, you can pick pumpkins and buy squash. Plus there are plants and herbs in the spring and summer. We pick a variety of apples as well as purchase some honey crisps from the store. Really love coming here and recommend it!

I recently stopped by Pete's Fruit Market for the first time after hearing about it. As soon as I…read morewalked in, I saw buckets of vegetables: peppers, tomatoes, squash, you name it. Most buckets seemed to be about 6-8 inches in diameter and prices ranged from $1 to $5. I only wish they offer smaller buckets instead of such a big bucket. It is hard to buy in bulk with smaller household and I don't like to freeze produce. I was curious about the quality of the produce, but I wasn't too impressed. For example, the apricots looked a little banged up--kind of like the "misfit" produce I've seen before. There was upbeat Mexican music playing, which gave the place a fun vibe, and the store itself isn't that big. A security guard was stationed outside. They had yellow-flesh watermelon at $0.99/lb, and giant seeded watermelons for $16 each--which felt pricey, especially since I had just come from Costco where I got a decent-sized watermelon for $6 (though admittedly smaller than the ones at Pete's). I also noticed mangoes going for $2 each, which again felt steep. I had been hoping to find some Mexican pastries, but nothing really stood out, and there weren't any prepared foods available. However, I saw they got a catering menu which I thought it might be good to have a food court selling those items. I was expecting something more like La Michoacana or Fiesta stores in Texas, but this wasn't it. In the end, I just picked up a few Mexican candies like Pulparindo and called it a day. I was a bit disappointed with the fruit selection, especially the lack of tropical options. On the plus side, they have a fairly large, gated parking lot, which is convenient. I'm glad I visited, but not sure I'll be rushing back anytime soon.

Suffice it to say, for now, that if you need a fruit or vegetable (the standards), a deli salad, garden plant (in season), seafood, pot pie, or sweet treat, get yourself to Layton Fruit Market. Today I tried two new items: German potato salad made by the famous Pulaski Inn of Cudahy, and safe-to-eat-raw chocolate chunk cookie dough. The former was nearly as good as my grandma's, with sufficient bacon and a well-balanced dressing. I prefer it hot, so a quick trip through the microwave and I was happy. The cookie dough was excellent--big CHUNKS of dark chocolate, and a yummy base sans eggs, making it safe for many.

Great apples with about 50 varieties to either buy…read moreor pick (each season different varieties will do better due to differing growing conditions so the more the better), very good honey, fall ornamental gourds, corn, pumpkins, etc. One of the few orchards I have found with Empire apples, one of my favorites. Tim, our host took us (two adults and three children) around the orchard on a tractor sampling for us different apples until he understood our taste preferences then steered us to the ones we liked best. One of the highlights was trying the different heirloom apples including one that was President Thomas Jefferson's Favorite. Pieper's is about a two hour drive from Northern Chicago Suburbs but well worth the trip (most pick your own orchards within an hour or so are heavily picked leaving few apples low enough for children to get plus this is located in the rolling hills - moraines region -- of Wisconsin offering very good fall colors).

Fresh eggs, canned goods, honey, pork chops to die for, chicken, and homemade stocks are all for sale at reasonable prices. Chatted up the owner Pam to find her story is one of strength and resilience. Her husband passed away not too long ago and she took over his chores to keep the business going, it is alot of work. I see crates of commercial tomatos that come from the produce auction. I think they grow very little of their own produce anymore, maybe late corn and green beans. I think most of it is the same stuff you get at the grocery store but at a higher price. Just like farmers markets beware that a lot of these places are selling stuff at higher prices stating they are locally grown. When I see crates from produce that is purchased in bulk at auction, we'll if you think your being hosed, yeah you are. The super early corn at this place should be your sign. Why would they be so blessed, and it does not taste the same as the later, real wisconsin corn. Tomatos are over priced supermarket tomatos.
