Our experience with both designs and the implementation of design were stellar. Susan really listened to our lifestyle and what we wanted out of both yards. She made great suggestions and then designed according to the way we live. During each design process Susan was open & responsive to changes that we wanted (we did 3 versions to get the ultimate dream for us completed on our current home). We just had our Camarillo landscape finished and Susan's vision for us was perfect! Even thought it is a small yard, it is everything we wanted and more. Beautiful pavers surround our home. We have 2 small water features, lighting, wind spinners & chimes - topped off with flowering, low water plants that won't block our views plus succulents. Then trellises with climbing flowering plants along our side yards where windows look out on to walls with uplighting. It is truly a zen backyard oasis! I would not hesitate to recommend Susan and her staff for landscape design and the ultimate implementation of vision. The backyard was a typical San Francisco challenge - small space with a slope requiring three retaining walls. I had a small budget but they didn't make me feel bad for sticking to it and they created something really beautiful. I'm an Aussie married to a Mexican and upon request their design incorporated both the most gorgeous Australian and Mexican flora. Now we have family meals outside and it gives me so much pleasure having breakfast out there by myself or just potting around in my own little vege patch. From our first meeting Laura and Jude were unbelievably easy and absolutely wonderful to work with. We contacted them about redesigning our backyard and within a few days they came down for a site visit and to hear our thoughts. What impressed me the most was how they quickly understood our likes and dislikes -- they were masterful at reading us and translating that into a cohesive plan. They also respected our budget, and did not push us out of our comfort zone in the slightest. One good example of this was how I was dead set on having a big wooden deck. As Laura explained that would eat up a considerable part of out budget, she also said to me, "Do you think you might be attracted to the feeling of the wood, and perhaps it's not an actual deck you're looking for?" She was spot on. They suggested custom wood storage as well as a wood bench and in the end I have the exact feeling I wanted and it is far better than any deck would have been. We gave Laura and Jude a pretty extensive wish list -- we have 3 kids ranging from age 4 to 16 and while we wanted places for them to be kids we wanted it to feel "adult" as well. We wanted storage. We wanted seating. We wanted a custom playhouse. Oh and we have a fairly small yard. The got it all, and more, Jude and Laura created the perfect "zoned" backyard without feeling like our yard was cut up into sections. It has an incredible flow to go along with an absolutely incredible design. We didn't know much about plants and couldn't really explain what we liked or didn't like so we all went to a nursery and walked around while my husband and I pointed to what we liked and didn't like and we talked about where things might go. It was invaluable -- they absolutely nailed the soft-scape part of our yard as well. We took Jude and Laura's suggestion of a fire pit, and they were right -- since our yard was completed last summer we are out there -- almost regardless of the weather -- sitting on our custom bench, in front of the fire pit, roasting marshmallows with the kids or sharing a glass of wine just my husband and I. Our backyard is stunning. We love it. Our friends and family are so impressed. But the real magic is how It has transformed how we as a family live-- we spend more time outside, and much more time together now. And we owe that all to Jude and Laura.

I made it very clear to put good plastic down to eliminate the weeds. He got it done pretty fast in a few days and it came out same as we planed. At the beginning of this year 2026 when the rain started I noticed the weeds were coming back out thru the cheap plastic they installed. They had installed thin cheap ass plastic which didn't stop the weeds this was the main reason why i did this project to block the weeds and to have low maintenance. I called him and asked about the weeds and he said he can't stop the rain or stop the weeds from coming back because this is how nature is and he couldn't do more than that base on his estimate., bull crap. He told me at the start that the plastic would stop the weeds they shouldn't come back. The reason why the weeds came back is because he used the cheapest thin plastic material instead of the thick plastic..really thin shit plus he got very loud mouth and rude to me on the phone. I did have then put in some shrubs and plants and white rocks which cost me 3,200 dollars for 200sq feet..over half the subs died two weeks later and he wouldn't replace them via text messages and later on he even wouldn't return my texts or phone calls. There was nothing written down or no signed or written contact for one thing. Now I have lots of weeds coming back thur the white rocks like before, I've spent several hours pulling weeds once again. I guess I will have everything removed and have artificial grass installed with a real Contractor this time. The hole purpose of this project was to eliminate weeds cuz im a senior 79yrs..i don't recommend this company to anyone..very bad work ethic and lousy attitude and poor communications. We worked with Steve at Seed Studio on a full redesign of our property, including front, back, and…read moreside yard landscaping, a new driveway, fencing and gates, multiple decks, a patio, an outdoor kitchen, and a built-in hot tub. We do like the final layout and appreciate how efficiently he used the space on our narrow lot. However, there were several significant issues with the process that would keep us from working with him again or recommending him to others. Design Process & Deliverables The final plans were clear and professionally drafted from a contractor's perspective, but they were essentially blueprint-style drawings. We understood going into the project that we would not be receiving full 3-D renderings. However, Seed Studio's website features conceptual sketches and visual representations of designs, which led us to expect that we would receive something similar to help visualize the finished project. Instead, we received only technical plans. For the fees charged, we expected more client-friendly presentation materials and drawings. We also found Steve somewhat unreceptive to feedback once he had settled on a design direction. While he listened to our input, it often felt as though he already had a vision for the project and was not particularly interested in incorporating significant client preferences that differed from that vision. One surprise was the budget. The materials and design choices ultimately specified in the plans ended up costing nearly double the budget range we had initially discussed. We understand that pricing can evolve during a project, but the final design moved so far beyond our stated budget that we would have appreciated more proactive guidance and discussion along the way. Additionally, many of the materials Steve specified were expensive specialty products with long lead times. While they may have been attractive design choices, they added significant cost and complexity to the project. Both contractors we worked with struggled to install certain materials without damage, which created additional delays, expense, and frustration. Contractor Recommendations Steve strongly encouraged us to use a particular contractor from Redwood City, explaining that he wanted to use them more frequently on his South Bay projects. Based in part on his recommendation, we moved forward with them despite some reservations. Unfortunately, that relationship did not work out and we ultimately had to terminate them from the project. While the contractor's performance was certainly their responsibility, we were disappointed that Steve was largely unwilling to become involved when serious issues arose, despite having advocated for them so strongly. Afterward, Steve recommended another contractor whom he regularly works with. They were more familiar with his designs and initially things progressed more smoothly but then we also experienced damage and delays with them. Construction Oversight & Client Support What ultimately disappointed us most was not just the contractors themselves, but Steve's lack of involvement once construction began. The project that was initially expected to take roughly a few months stretched into over 1 year. During that time there were significant delays, damaged materials, scheduling issues, and long stretches where progress slowed dramatically. We were not expecting Steve to manage construction or solve every problem. However, given the size of the project, the substantial design fees, and the fact that both contractors had come through his recommendations, we expected at least occasional check-ins or some level of interest in how the project was progressing. Instead, it felt as though once the design work was completed and final payment was received, his involvement effectively ended. He never checked in, asked how construction was going, or showed interest in seeing how his design was being executed. While ongoing support may not have been formally included in his scope of work, we found the lack of engagement surprising. Most homeowners would reasonably expect their designer to have some interest in the success of a project that represents their work and reputation. Overall We are happy with the overall design concept and how our narrow lot was ultimately utilized. However, the experience getting there was far more stressful, expensive, and time-consuming than we expected. If you decide to work with Seed Studio, our advice would be: * Be very clear and firm about your budget and monitor design decisions closely. * expect only blueprint-style plans without additional visualization materials. * Do not expect ongoing involvement or support once construction begins. - independently vet contractors regardless of his recommendations
