We recently bought a new house from a lovely elderly couple and noticed the front garden had been overgrown. I contacted Kevin to give it a spruce knowing it would take a lot of work to get it livable. I found Kevin's Gardening Service through a flyer sent to my home. I saw the great reviews online and decided to give them a call for a consultation. Tom was very informative and shared some cost saving options to update our front and back yard space when we met. We started off with a front/back yard clean up and OMG what a job they did! We hadn't performed any maintenance on the yards since it had been raining and it had gotten so embarrassingly out of hand. Our space is small, but Jamie and team knocked out the clean up in only 2 hours! They even helped to break down a planter box that was falling apart, relocate the soil and take out an old post that had no use. We did two walk throughs and Jamie and I chatted about future projects we'll want to do - again the knowledge and suggestion this team has was so helpful because I am otherwise clueless. Best customer service and pricing we found near Oakland! Before we found Kevin we got unaffordable price quotes that made my husband and I think that we may need to wait to relandscape. But thank goodness we found Kevin. This is a family run business with him and his two sons. They are all very friendly, flexible and accommodating to our project and the end results are amazing and we couldn't be happier! They also had creative ideas for us and let us choose and told us pros and cons. I feel like they were very knowledgeable and just knew what we wanted! We decided to relandscape one side of our front yard. It had mounds of English ivy about 4 feet tall and looking really unappealing. We told Kevin and his son Tom that we wanted low maintenance (so I dont have to prune!) and drought resistance plants with some rocks. The other side of our front yard has grass and some other bushes. We told them that we also wanted it to flow with the other side of our yard too so it didn't look like a patch work job of just doing one side. They also made room for walkways so we could get to our trash easier and backyard! They built us a planter box that will act as a retaining wall (since our yard slopes towards our house) and made us steps to walk down off our front door step so I dont have to jump down and hurt my knees when walking to the trash! They step up a drip system as well and connected it to our sprinklers for us. They also helped clean up our back yard! They trimmed our large tree so I can see the view now, pulled all my weeds, got rid of dead plants, added stepping stones for two walkways, planted some of our frint yard plants in the backyard, and re-mulched the entire backyard! I was amazed when I came home to see all of this done! Even a week later Tom called to check on our plants and to make sure everything is going well! read more

In June, my property received a long non-compliance review from the Oakland Fire Department. The OFD has begun using the requirements for a defensible space that is in line with the yearly flyer. I had many small and medium trees that had taken over along with great deal of overgrowth. The gardening work was well orchestrated and was completed by seven workers using two trucks. Kevin supervised beginning at the start of the day and after the lunch break his nephew finished up at the end of day.The trees removed included acacias, cedars, camellias, and English laurels. Kevin was very skilled at separating rampant volunteers, undergrowth, and weeds from the original landscaping that I had installed twenty years ago. It is a relief to see my original hardscape and garden. Man, I really wanted this to be a glowing review, and tried multiple times to give the team at Kevin's Gardening Service an opportunity to make things right but no luck. We paid a reasonable (although still expensive - because, you know, Bay Area) price to get a one time clean up of our yard this past summer. We live on a hilly lot surrounded by trees that produce a lot of leaves. Kevin's Gardening Services performs monthly maintenance too, and I was in the market for a long term gardener who knew what they were doing (instead of the guys who just blow and collect leaves). However, their prices are not cheap - and I wanted to evaluate their services before committing to monthly maintenance. Tim, Kevin's son, came out to do our initial site visit. He's personable and friendly and quickly understood what we'd like to do. He's knowledgeable about plants and gave us some great recommendations about what to do and what not to do. I had a good sense of confidence. This was in early January. They followed up with a quote quickly afterwards - and I sat on the decision for a few months because we became busy with a couple of other house projects. After a bit of back and forth over a few months, we agreed on some cleanup, replacing some rosemary bushes that had died, and an irrigation system checkup. Overall cost was $2,600. We finally got this scheduled in early May. This is where things started going a little wonky. The crew started off strong. I met Kevin himself, who, like Tim, was friendly and helpful. He brought a large crew and I asked him how long they expected this to take - he shared that they would be here all day. I walked around the lot and re-confirmed all the work that had to be done. By around lunchtime, most of that crew had left - presumably to work on another job. I was working from home and had a wall to wall schedule of meetings, so it was a little hard to check in with the crew - although given the excellent Yelp reviews - I figured I didn't need to. The irrigation specialist pointed out that one of our drip systems had a burst pipe and was leaking, so they'd turned it off. By early afternoon, there were just two people left - one dude who was on his phone, watching videos, and another guy who seemed to be doing all the work. He rang our doorbell, interrupting me in a work meeting, and asking if they were good to go. I walked around the lot quickly and noticed a huge pile of leaves that had been left on our back lot. This raised my blood pressure a bit - after all, I'd explicitly pointed it out to Kevin earlier. This happened a couple more times through the afternoon, where the video-watching dude kept ringing the bell and interrupting my day, and I had to go and point out work that hadn't been finished. He obviously did not want to be there. The third or fourth time this happened, a quick scan looked like everything had been collected (although later, it hadn't been) and I said fine, it was OK for them to head out. I had asked Kevin to provide me with a quote to repair the irrigation system, and for some additional planting, as per their recommendation. They followed up with a non-itemized quote the next day for $4,500. I asked them to break this down and didn't hear much. In the meantime, we had our handyman repair the broken pipe for a lot less. Once repaired, we turned the irrigation system on and found that the valves had been destroyed during the irrigation tune-up and no longer opened and closed - instead gushing water when operated. This was frustrating - but given the valves were on the older end, not surprising. That said, I would have expected their irrigation specialist to either have been more careful or to have identified that as a problem when they worked on valves. Of course, during this time, the summer heat had started in the East Bay, and the 4 of the 6 new rosemary bushes, which we paid them $250 for, had started withering. I followed up with Tim which took days of phone tag (his phone going straight to voicemail each time I called, and no one responding to my calls to the main company line), we finally managed to catch each other. I expressed my annoyance at the situation (that they turned off the irrigation, which then killed the new plants) and he promised to send someone out to see what we could do about the valves. He said they'd replace the failed rosemary when the irrigation was repaired. It took about 2 weeks of back and forth, before he finally sent Tom, his brother, to check out the valves. He sent a quote for $830 for repairing the two valves. We ended up getting a plumber to repair the valves at about half the cost. I followed up with Tim in mid-August to get our bushes replaced. It's been 3 weeks since I reached out and they have still not managed to schedule the work. At this point, I'm done following up - life is too short. Overall disappointing: friendly but extremely unresponsive. Do not recommend having them touch irrigation. read more

I had Tom Thai out for a tree removal project - I had two medium sized Loquats that I wanted removed in order to plant an avocado tree. While the service was on the expensive side the work was top-notch. They removed the two trees so well I'm having a hard time believing they were there!
