Cute shop. Idea is nice. Cafe was nice too. Food was just okay. Expensive for what you get & pretty bland taste. Beef & mushroom pie was dry, made with ground beef, not cut up pieces of beef'. Really needed some gravy, but some seasoning in the pie was needed too. Cheese & potato patty was okay, but bland. Typically Irish cheddar is nice & sharp, so maybe not enough cheese or American cheddar? Bought a pork pie, which was small. Had it the next day & the most dry pork pie I've had in my life (I'm 52 & grew up eating pork pies!). The meat jelly was almost non-existent, so no moisture in the pie. I threw it out after a couple of bites, it was too dry to eat. Workers in the cafe were nice. American though & not familiar with the food. Young girl didn't know the size of the pies when I was ordering, man told me the pasties (pronouncing it 'paste-ies' lol. Not using them for that!). Store worker was gruff when asking questions. Then when checking out said her arm & back were bothering her. Started into detail keeping us talking for about 15 minutes. Really didn't need to hear all her medical issues or how she was working there but wasn't happy! We won't be back. Shame as a nice idea. read more

I love this hidden gem. I came last year and they unfortunately lost my reservation for afternoon tea. The owners made things right and apologized a few times for the inconvenience. I was really impressed with how they handled the situation so have taken friends there a few times since then to order lunch off their menu. Today I visited them with four friends for afternoon tea. It was great! We enjoyed unlimited tea and delicious food. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. And, of course, there was plenty of fun shopping in the shop afterwards! read more

Love this little Celtic Shop! They have a really nice selection of Wool Sweaters, Clothing, Hats, & Assortment of Dresses for communion. They Knick-Knacks and great display of Irish Merchandise as well as supply of Rugby Jerseys, Guinness Pint & Half-pints and merchandise! The man at the desk was incredibly rude to us. He was very belittling and mocked my mother. She was looking for a book for my father and when asked for the book section of the store, he rudely pointed out they only sell books for children. She accidentally knocked something over and while picking it up, she made a self deprecating joke to herself to which he agreed that she shouldn't be allowed out because she is "too much" When we left she said "God bless you" and he ignored her until we were out the door which he mumbled "you too I guess". The young person in the cafe was very kind. When we asked a question they answered honestly and kindly and I would only go back to this business because of that person. One of my absolute favorite spots, such a hidden gem! They had an amazing tea selection, I got a lavender vanilla tea (I forget the exact flavor, but it was so delicious) and my boyfriend got a chai tea that was so flavorful! For food, I got a veggie sandwich with their vegan tomato soup! First off, their bread is AMAZING, and the veggies were so crisp! That tomato soup warmed my soul, it was so flavorful and a perfect balance with the sandwich! My boyfriend had a breakfast sandwich which he inhaled in 10 seconds because it was so dang good! We ended on a perfectly sweet note of macaroons. The chocolate coconut macaroon, wow I could easily sit down and eat 50 in one sitting. And the creme brûlée macaroon was just as great! The atmosphere is so homey, it essentially makes you feel like you're going over to your grandmas house for Sunday dinner for a home cooked meal (and I mean that in the BEST way possible). The staff is always so kind and you can tell they love what they do! I highly recommend this place for a tasty Irish meal with your family, date, or even a nice solo dine in! 10/10 read more

What a fantastic time we had at Oxford Hall! We were a party of four and rsvp'd ahead of time for the afternoon tea. The cafe area is very small so we were relocated to a corner table instead of the crowded Round Table they had reserved. We got there at 1:45 so there wasn't much customer activity at the time, which was perfect for us. Afternoon tea was very reasonably priced. The tea is unlimited and you can select from many loose leaf options. I had the spiced pear, my husband had an Indian chai, we tried a mint chocolate, and each was delicious, fresh and not bitter. The food was simple. The meal started with small cups of a ham and bean soup that was surprisingly tasty. On First Look it appeared to be chicken soup with a clear broth, but the flavor was surprisingly rich with ham and perfectly cooked beans. The salad was simple, light greens with balsamic dressing. Nothing complicated. We were brought a tray of goodies ranging from egg salad to chicken salad sandwiches, delicious and flaky scones, and a variety of desserts. If you are looking for a fancy holiday tea party, this is not your traditional tea house. It is a cafe inside a nice shop of Celtic items. It is more casual than I would consider for a tea house, but afternoon tea was a treat and at $20 a person, it was a reasonably priced treat for all four of us. read more

As part of a post-holiday adventure day my husband and I, plus our best friends, planned a mid-afternoon high tea at the Oxford Hall Celtic Shop and we had a lovely time. The café and shop are somewhat small but very pretty. The tables are small and close together. The Afternoon Tea features a pre-selected menu but we were all very pleased with the choices. We were each able to select a loose leaf tea from their wide selection. I had the Lady Londonderry Tea- a fruity black tea that I loved so much I bought more to take home. I tried everyone's selection and loved them all. Afternoon tea was very reasonably priced. The tea is unlimited and you can select from many loose leaf options. I had the spiced pear, my husband had an Indian chai, we tried a mint chocolate, and each was delicious, fresh and not bitter. The meal began with a deceptive cup of soup. It looked like chicken soup but was actually a delicious ham and bean. The second course was a garden salad of spring mix, grape tomatoes, and cucumber with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Lastly was the traditional three-tiered tray with fresh scones with clotted cream and the best raspberry preserves I have ever tasted (also bought some to bring home), finger sandwiches including chicken salad, egg salad and ham with cheese, and the top tier included traditional sweets from the Ireland and Scotland like shortbread, mincemeat hand pies and some other goodies. We also ordered a couple of Scotch Eggs to share. I have never done Afternoon Tea before so I went in with low expectations and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I felt like the service could have been a little more attentive. The price was perfect. I think that I would like to return and order from their menu which features a number of items I'd like to try. read more

Very cool shop in New Cumberland, I dropped by here for some free Guinness and sausage samples during the monthly "First Friday" event in New Cumberland. They certainly have everything Irish and Guinness related you could ever dream of, not to mention a wonderful selection of loose leaf and bag tea. This is a small little store on Bridge Street in New Cumberland that I first went to in spring of 2004. close to neato burrito and PNC Bank. They have all kinds of things imported from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. Clothing, hats, scarves, jewelry, keychains, tartans, kilts, games, food, (bangers and mash are awesome), tea, and baby gifts. There are many things in print to like maps, prayers and posters depicting anything really. They also have a pretty decent selection of traditional music, and for reasonable prices. You can buy claddagh wedding rings and so forth. I bought a really great book just called 'atlas of irish history' for 12 dollars, it has nearly 90 maps in it and all kinds of facts and figures and so forth. pretty neat if you want to kill some time after a movie or something. read more

This is a clothes and Jewelry and tea shop. I think they have it the wrong way around and it should be the Tea shop at the front with the clothes and jewelry somewhere in the back ground. The meat pies are out of they world good. Anyone from the British Isles or has been to there is going to love the food here. The pork pie has a non traditional pastry the owner cook has replaced the hard lard rich short pastry with a flakey, buttery pastry that works magic with the meat inside. The Scotch Egg is a good size made with free range egg. Just warm it up , slice in half and it is great with a salad or chips and baked beans. This area could use a 'pie shop' and a place that serves a traditional British 'full Monty" breakfast with rashers and black pudding. They might do better in a college town like Carlisle than New Cumberland. read more

Wow, it always ceases to amaze me how some businesses can practice such terrible customer service skills. I normally give good reviews and am pretty easily satisfied. This place needs a lot of work before I would go back. We were told that we could order alacarte but menus were never passed out and they assumed we were there for the afternoon tea. Everyone in the group obliged this miscommunication but we did not receive any thank you's for it. I should have seen the writing on the wall. The good news, the food was very good. The bad news is that the portions were miniscule and this is coming from a professional dietitian that believes in small portions! We were a group of 13 and they seated us at various tables. The food was served on tiered plates that we passed from table to table. There was barely enough for each person to take one small food item. When we requested more food, we were very tersely told that they had brought out x amount of egg salad and x amount of chicken salad, etc. We all knew that there was no way we had the stated amount served to us. However, there was no talking to this lady, she knew it all and did not even ask us if we received what she reported. We had various servers so there could have been some miscommunication and how could 13 ladies all be wrong! So, if you want to risk not getting much to eat and getting scolded for asking about something, then you might like eating here. I will definitely not bring my Newcomers Club or my BooK Club to this place until they have new owners. It's really a shame as the food was good but a real tease. They should tell everyone up front that you only receive 1 each of the 1 inch sandwiches and there are no seconds. For $15.95, a total rip off! And even sadder, owners that don't value their customers opinions. Find another place to go. read more

Nice Celtic/Irish shop! Very good selection of first communion dresses and gifts. They carry more than just the average Guinness garb...its nice to see a good selection. Beyond the the standard salute to Guinness, they had some Irish pottery - Belleek, Nicholas Mosse, etc. It was also good to see ads for upcoming "Irish events". I adore this place. It's a stereotypical small-town shop, where the owners are local and invested in the town - you'll see them at various town events throughout the year, and they're always helping out local students, groups, and schools when they can. Their inventory is also quite unique - it's the only place in the area where you can get actual Irish merchandise for decent prices. In fact, I bought my first "real" Claddagh ring here after having bought 3 different ones from local department stores that were made cheaply, bent easily, and turned my finger green. The Claddagh I bought from Oxford Hall is still in near-perfect condition and is something I still wear on a near-regular basis, even 10 years removed from its date of purchase. To say I love Ireland is a gross understatement. I've been there 7-times and would go back in a heartbeat before heading anywhere else. When I need my Hibernia fix, I go to Oxford Hall. They have a great selection of Irish/Celtic jewelry, clothing, foods and trinkets. I've done a lot Xmas shopping at O.H. over the years. The owners are fun to talk to and Stephen (I believe) has the most lovely soothing accent. I could listen to him talk all day. Not only have I STILL not received the merchandise but I have tried calling multiple times, left voicemail's, and emailed this company and no one has returned any of my messages. It shows on my transactions that my purchase has gone through, but still have not received anything. It wont even let me track the package. It's like they received my money and then cancelled the actual shipment or something. I'm disputing the transaction, but I am extremely let down. Last week was my first time at Oxford Hall. The food was good, however there was very little of it. The owners and staff were disorganized and argumentative when I approached them with a problem. When I called to make reservations I asked if they could accommodate our group. I wish she had said no since the place is extremely small and they apparently aren't used to serving more than a couple people at a time. I was told that they have an afternoon tea and soups and sandwiches and you can order alacarte. I specifically said to her. "so everyone can decide what they want when we get there", she said yes. Once our whole party arrived I approached the waitress to see if they were bringing menus or did we need to come to the register to order individually. That is when I was informed that they prepared an afternoon tea for all of us. To make things easier we all just agreed to have the tea. They brought 3 small tiered servers to the tables that we had to pass from table to table. Some of us didn't get our tea till we were almost done with the food. There wasn't even enough for each person to take one of each item. They kept arguing that it was because we had 14 people not 13. WE DIDN'T. I have never paid $15 for lunch an left hungry. Unfortunately I don't think anyone will return. Our group frequently goes out for lunch and high tea but this won't be a place that we will keep on our list. read more

Had "high tea" here with my young niece and we loved it! It's small so advance reservations are required. They had dozens of tea selections which were served in pretty china. The food portion was HUGE! Authentic potato soup, fresh garden/spinach salad followed by the tea plates ... tea sandwiches, chicken salad in pastry shells, scones, muffins, fruit filled pastries, fruit, cookies, brownies, breads. My Gosh! We had lots of leftovers. I've had high tea multiple other places and they are generally $15 more per person with half the food. This is more than a meal. Highly recommend for its quaintness, homemade food, and value. They also offer a regular Irish menu for breakfast & lunch if you don't want the full tea. read more

I've been to Oxford Hall twice. The first time I was very surprised at the selection, and being a musician, I was surprised that they had (overpriced, but still) music-related items, both CDs and instruments, including bodhran drums and bagpipe equipment. However, both times I was watched like a hawk, and I felt like they were expecting me to try stealing something. I had a cup of tea the last time I went, and as I was looking around the shop afterwards, I was told, "you realize you're going to have to pay for that, right?" Also, as I was drinking said infused beverage, the staff members were being perfectly polite, talkative, and civil to another customer, who just so happened to spend upwards of $60 without batting an eye. This was DOWNRIGHT RUDE and I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK AGAIN. Summary: Definitely some good qualities to the shop, but my business was absolutely not appreciated. read more

I have been going to Oxford Hall Celtic Shop from its original opening in New Cumberland many years ago now. I must say that Steve & Cindy Washburn have always strived to add authentic Irish and British Isle products to their inventory. The new shop is bigger and better then ever, and the food is a pure delight! Steve & Cindy have consistently supported the Irish and Celtic community here in South Central Pennsylvania in every way they possibly can, and they truly care about their customers. Update 3/8/14 - It appears the shop is getting firmly back on it's feet, as the inventory has improved greatly and it feels more like the old shop with the addition of a nice food section. Pricing is what you'd expect for a small independent business, but I have no problem patronizing them and helping them stick around for awhile. NEVER EVER GO TO THIS PLACE! Brother in law rented kilts for his wedding this weekend, specific color for namesake. Shop sent wrong color, some severly SEVERLY damaged, others didnt fit AT ALL. Called to speak to owner and discuss some sort of compensation, She actually yelled at me over the phone and told me they weren't damaged. Argued with me. Aweful aweful business. When I expressed displeasure, I was told by the owner, "The hell with you. Come in and I'll refund your money." Wow! I saw the review about friendliness and just wanted to say that I have always had a wonderful experience with the owners of this place. I have found it to be a really welcoming spot and recognize how much they've done to contribute to the community in New Cumberland. I haven't lived in the area in a few years, but I used to regularly stop by, and when I visit now they are so friendly. This is true even though I rarely purchase much. Speaking of buying, when I do drop by, I always pick up tea --- and these people really know about teas. I'm a tea snob, and they always have consistently great selection. This establishment is a must for all tea lovers, dessert lovers and lovers of Ireland, the UK, etc. There is so much to try and everything they serve is home made. The tea wall never disappoints. Any time I am in the Harrisburg area I visit with a group of friends. If you call ahead they are always happy to cater to groups of a larger size (we usually come with 10-15 people.) We all enjoy sampling everyone's different teas and get scones for all. The staff is very friendly and proud of their work (as they should be!). The cook, servers and owners always have a moment to talk about their shop, ingredients, ideas, etc. I always feel welcome and I am never ready to leave PA without stopping by. The Hall also offers other products than just food. They sell Irish music, instruments, books, clothing, instruments, jewelry, etc. Prices go from inexpensive to a reasonable middle range. The atmosphere is a relaxed one of warmth, welcoming, and comfort. This is where I want to escape to on cold, dreary days.(Too bad for me New York is so far away!) read more

Today I went to Oxford Hall for small business Saturday. I had not been in the shop for several years and let me explain why. The owner, Cindy was talking very loud to me regarding a member of my family about her mental state of mind, so that everyone in the shop could hear what she was saying. I couldn't believe that someone like that would do something so unprofessional. When she wouldn't shut up, I just started heading towards the door and she just kept running her big mouth. My friend who was with me couldn't believe what she said to me when we got outside. She told me she would never go back to that shop EVER AGAIN!! You know the old saying, "You can say anything about your family that you want, but nobody else better say anything". So Cindy, keep your big mouth shut and your opinions to yourself in the future. There are so many things to love about the Oxford Hall Celtic Shop. It's my favorite place to go with family and friends for tea. The menu always includes something fresh, seasonal and delicious! And I love that the eggs and meats are locally sourced. The owners, Cindy and Steve, and their wait staff take such good care of us every time we stop in. I've tried almost all of their breakfast items, including the full Irish breakfast, and the Irish bacon BLT and curried chicken salad sandwiches are awesome for lunch! There are so many tasty varieties of tea to choose from. And the baked goods are delicious! I cannot say enough about how much I love this place!
