I'm disappointed with my experience trying to adopt through PAWS. I first visited the shelter to meet Neptune, but he was being housed in the stray section rather than the adoptable area because there was no available space. I was told that if I wanted to meet him, I needed to submit an adoption application and schedule an appointment. I submitted my application on June 6 and did everything I was asked to do. Since then, I have called PAWS at least twice a week and sent multiple follow-up emails asking for an update on my application and whether I could schedule a visit with Neptune. I also reached out about two other cats but never received a response regarding them either. I completely understand that PAWS is short-staffed, and I truly appreciate the work they do for the animals. However, communication with prospective adopters is just as important. Even a quick email saying that my application was still being reviewed, that there was a waitlist, or that another adopter was ahead of me would have been appreciated. Instead, after nearly a month of waiting and repeatedly trying to get in touch, on July 2 I finally received a very short email simply stating that Neptune had been adopted. While I'm genuinely happy that he found a home, it was extremely disappointing to spend weeks trying to communicate with no meaningful updates, only to receive a one-line email at the end. Also, I dont understand not trying to maintain a good communication and just keep the adoptees in the loop, it is actually frustrating when there is nothing i could do rather than emailing and calling them, it just is not fair. ( I am saying this based on all the previous google/yelp) reviews i have had, it does seem like this is an recurring problem and there has been nothing done to solve this, just seems suspicious at last. I hope PAWS can improve its communication with prospective adopters. Many people are genuinely trying to provide loving homes for these animals, and applicants deserve timely updates, even if the answer is simply that a cat has already been adopted or that there is a waitlist. I'm highly qualified for an Aussie, already have one. It's been since May, now July. They ghosted me in emails because my cat wasn't vaccinated. He had a bad response to rabies vaccine in past BUT I did and uploaded, then was asked about the HOA which I sent as well and that was the last because they are reading the law incorrectly. Also, my Aussie is in current training as a"service dog" I never got the chance to approve this fact. Just was sent an email saying I was no longer considered. Such a screenful and high anxiety process to be left without the dog. I can't believe the process this place takes when an animal would go to a great home. I understand the breed and know the needs. Someone that gets this dog I hope they understand it's not a lap dog. Highly disappointed and I'd look else where to adopt. Save you sanity. read more

I'd give it 0 stars if I could. They judge you as soon as you go in. They discriminate on the basis of how old you look. They wouldn't answer any of my questions about some cats that were up for adoption, but ignored me because they already knew they wouldn't let me adopt. I went to a Humane Society Shelter and didn't judge me because I have grey hair. PAWS has a bad reputation for the way they treat people. My wife and I visited the shelter and found a dog we both liked. We were told we had to find out an application. That was fine. We were also told there was no guarantee the dog would still be there. We followed up and called every day and got no information. We were also lied to by the people handling the application. Bottom line is we were given the run around, lied to and then the dog was adopted by someone else. Spare yourself the frustration and heartache! Horrible. My mom and I have been searching for a puppy that was either a German shepherd, husky, or lab. We went to this facility before close at 4 and don't get my wrong the lady who came out to talk to us was amazing and shared great info on how to utilize their website to see what animals they had available! They had a beautiful puppy that was a lab/retriever mix. So my mom went through the process and applied to adopt this little fur baby. After two weeks, there had been no reply from the people who supposedly view these applications. So my mom had emailed for an update 3 times!!!! WITH NO RESPONSE. I don't know who is in charge of that but it's straight ignorance. I understand they want to find a good home for these animals but jeez at least communicate! We have been dog lovers are whole life. In this household we currently have a German shepherd who is 6 years old and had a German/ husky mix that had passed two Christmas' ago at the age of 12. With no email back, my mom and I went up to the facility to meet the pup in person. And the rules there are RIDICULOUS. You can not get to the level of the dog which is crouching to the floor. They don't allow the dog to lick you or come too close in contact with you. It's like how are you supposed to get to know the pup and see if it's a right fit for you? They don't allow 1:1 with the pup and it's crazy. After not hearing back for a month and a half, we ended up saving/adopting a pup from a humane society in Munster, Indiana. I was so dissatisfied and disappointed with this shelter. I inquired and submitted an application for a cat and then called as well to inquire as I have been looking to adopt and was very excited. When I first called, the volunteer was very nice and let me know that I could come meet the cat I was interested in and potentially take them home if all goes well. Well, the next morning I got an email back saying the cat was injured and could not be adopted and I asked how long will they need as I am very willing to wait for their recovery. All they said was it would be awhile.. so no worries, I then asked if I could still come visit the shelter and meet the other adoptable cats and they told me sure. They then asked about my address as they told me my name does not come up under my address... mind you I've lived in the same house for my entire life so I'm very concerned where they are getting this from as I explained this to them over email... no response. I end up just going to the shelter that day as I'm very excited and hopeful. I meet wonderful cats and find one I wanted to adopt. Of course I couldn't adopt that night, but made it very apparent that I was interested in said cat. I even sent an email afterwards summarizing my visit and interest. No response. I called that weekend- volunteers do not know statuses of applications or emails. That's fine. I waited until the following week and emailed AGAIN... they said the cat I was interested in was sick and again questioned my address and I responded promptly asking what they needed to prove my address! In my opinion the application process is a mess. I had to fill out an application, then send an email stating an application was on file with the names of my second/third choices, then I'm told the decision of who gets the animal is done remotely not by observing the animal interaction with the adoptee. I filled out an application, waited a week but never heard anything so I called and was told to send yet another email over to adoptions. They finally sent me an email with questions which I answered then they sent another email asking for my veterinarian contact which I provided. Shortly after that is when all communication stopped. They began "ghosting" me. I sent email after email asking about the dog I was interested in and no response. I email again asking that instead of ignorning my emails why don't they tell me what they need from me to complete the application process. Ghosted again. I call the office and "Fran" tells me the dog I wanted was adopted. A few days later I notice the dog still on the web site along with new pictures of him. I call the office again and a nice older man tells me he was never adopted. I email the president as listed on their website - ghosted again. I am working with another shelter now that has contacted my provided references and has received rave reviews regarding the care that I provided for my last dog. The new dog that I adopt will be loved unconditionally and have a great life as did my last dog. That could have been the dog that I wanted from P,A.W.S. of Tinley Park but instead that poor thing still sits in a kennel hoping to find his forever home. How sad. As someone who has volunteered for 4 different animal shelters, I have a pretty good idea how a shelter should be run. Recently we applied for a puppy and sent an additional email saying we were also interested in three other pups. We received a terse reply: On Saturday, April 15, 2023, Adoptions adoptions@pawstinleypark.org wrote: Everest was adopted. Thank you for your interest. They didn't acknowledge our interest in the other puppies. My next email said: Please let me know if we are qualified to adopt from your shelter and if the other three pups are still available! The reply: Our applications are reviewed for each individual animal as different dogs will have different needs. Sorry, that's not an answer. A better operating procedure is to keep an application on file for at least 6 months so adopters don't have to start from square one. Keeping applications on file would also cut down on the time PAWS of Tinley Park spends (not) answering email. Really all dogs in shelters have ONE basic need: to find a good loving home, for which my spouse and I are mega overqualified. Why would PAWS make it difficult for people with disposable income who own their own home with a huge fenced in yard to adopt from your shelter? What will happen is those of us who can afford to will become disgusted and disheartened and think about getting a pup from a breeder instead. All I know is I don't want to pay a shelter $400 for a pup neutered way before a healthy age. Do the research, folks. U.S. shelters neuter far too early simply because Americans can't be trusted to neuter later. Neutering before 5 months of age is unacceptable and can cause all sorts of medical problems. I'm done trying to convince shelters our household is acceptable. as much as i love the message behind p.a.w.s. and what they stand for. i'm quite disappointed with how they handle things for starters: we applied for a puppy and hadn't heard back for almost a week. i read reviews that mostly said they did this to a lot of interested people. we decided to email them and call them about our application status only to get an email back from them with the same questions we had already answered in the application. we did eventually get to adopt the puppy we were interested in but it was a pain in the neck second: paws was very quick to introduce the puppy to our dogs and take a photo to send us home. didn't even really give a chance to discuss previous vet treatments. this caused us to bring kennel cough into our home to our two other dogs. our two dogs now have kennel cough while the puppy we adopted shows no symptoms. while i understand kennel cough can be difficult to control in an animal shelter it would've been nice to know the puppy was exposed to a dog that had it before we brought her home to our dogs the only reason they are getting 2 stars instead of 1 is because i like how they push the animals who have been in their care the longest. for example, a dog named mackey had been there for going on 2 years and everytime you'd open their website his photo and description would pop up read more

We adopted two lab mixes (older puppies) from P.A.W.S. Tinley Park within the past 8 months. Our pups were both strays from the same small town and brought to P.A.W.S. by the same transport group-- consequently we suspect they may be related. We appreciate the consistent relationship they have with said transport group because it has allowed us to find a great matched pair for our Buddy. Sidenote: Petfinder originally brought us to P.A.W.S. which was really helpful as we may not have found the right pup(s) for us otherwise. Both of our dogs were happy and sociable when we met them at the shelter. Our first was at the shelter from 4 to 6 months old and it very was very apparent that volunteers had been working with him on training as he knew how to sit and was extremely (surprisingly) trainable from day 1. We were really impressed by this. Our second was not at the shelter for very long but looked like she was simply happy to be there. As we pulled up for our meet and greet, we spotted her smiling from ear to ear while enjoying outside time in the front lawn with friends (the smile got us before we even met!!) When Buddy arrived back at the shelter with us to meet her, we were so surprised and happy to see that he was so excited to be back-- this told us he really felt at home during his months at P.A.W.S. The meeting with our pups was facilitated well, with them meeting outside and parallel walking to ensure they got along. Each of our dogs were chipped, spayed/neutered, and given appropriate preventatives upon entering the shelter and appeared to be well fed. Also of note, when we adopted our second, I asked if there were any dogs displayed signs of respiratory illness and was told they have a separate area for any animals that may exhibit respiratory illness etc. One nice perk that I believe the rescue offers is a free new pet visit within 14 days of adoption with their associated veterinarian. I believe this also covers any respiratory illness costs (within 14 days) should any signs of illness pop up during that time. In terms of the adoption process, they have policies in place that require you to submit an application for the specific animal(s) you are interested in, regardless of whether you have adopted with them before. If approved, you can then schedule a meet and greet time and bring any animals you have at home to see if it is a good fit. If you show up without filling out an application or it hasn't been approved yet, you can look around at the animals but you will not be able to have a meet and greet at that time. In terms of application reviewing, they do state to be patient as they are volunteer based and they take time to review each application seriously. With out first dog, I did have a problem with filling out the application on my phone and needed to fill it out on my computer for some reason. This may have been a glitch on my end. We had no issues submitting the application for our second pup. Overall, our pups are now best friends and have ended up being a great fit for our family/each other. Also, because of their social media page we have been able to keep up with our first pup's sister (they came in together but she was adopted out first). We appreciate this aspect as well. We are thankful for P.A.W.S. Tinley Park and also their transport partner Quincy K-9 Connection for all they do. I adopted an awesome pup, who a day after bringing him home had a cough. After a week, contacted my vet VCA for an appt, who told me he would get over it on his own and not to bring him in. After having him home 13 days went to emergency and he was treated for pneumonia. Paws was so eager to snap our pix and clap when we left, never telling me anything regarding health visits, or anything about possible kennel cough. I went there to just look and learn the process. I lost my dog to old age just 15 days ago. They were very discouraging people at the front desk who seemed more eager to size me up and then immediately discourage me. I thought they wanted quality home for these animals. I was cut off, berated for coming on an off day. When they called me for the appointment. The facility was clean and well staffed: MOST of the volunteers were pleasant and kind but the two women running the front desk seemed dead set on belittling me, for considering adoption so soon. Condescending about my "qualification" even though THEY checked my references. (My vet) and called my groomer. When I asked about a home visit, I was told "we don't have the Funding for that. I only asked a question. No need to belittle me. I thought that was part of the process. They should seriously consider just being kind. That all. After expressing interest over the phone in adopting a dog, I drove 40 minutes with my 4 year old son to go see what dogs were available for rescue. We spent maybe less than an hour conversing with the volunteers and getting a tour of the facility and seeing the dogs in their cages. I was set on 2 different dogs I was interested in adopting, so I eagerly went home and completed the required application. On my application, I was honest and told them I had a dog before, but that he recently passed from cancer over the summer. So they requested all of his documentation to prove he was neutered and up to date on vaccines, which I provided promptly to them. They ghosted me for a week, so I followed up. They replied requesting the documents again, and I told them I had already sent them in over a week ago. So I AGAIN requested a status update on my application but yet again, they became completely unresponsive. . I felt judged upon walking in for having a small child, and I honestly feel that's what kept them from giving me a dog. And it's so unfortunate because I could have provided that dog with a home, large yard, and lots of love and care since I work from home and he would've never been left alone. But no, they'd rather keep their dogs in cages for the people who give them the first best impressions and probably have no previous history with dogs or have small children. Thankfully, I found another rescue and provided a forever home to a young lab who we have made part of our family just today from a rescue group from Palatine, IL. After reading the reviews online for P.A.W.S., we were very hesitant and waiting to experience some of the same negative feedback. Especially around customer service, the amount of time it takes to adopt a pet and if the pet was still adoptable once we got through the process. Well, we DIDN'T have ANY of the bad experiences others reported. The customer service upon entry from START to FINISH was OUTSTANDING. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the front desk with excellent customer service. The 'cat' coordinator who took us to the cat section was VERY knowledgeable about the cats and spent an incredible amount of time with us. We didn't feel rushed at all. P.A.W.S followed through with everything they said they would do. The whole process from seeing our little Whisper to picking her up and taking her to her new home was six days (and that's because two of the days we weren't available). The process went very smoothly. They answered our questions in person and returned our phone calls and emails timely. They are very concerned about their pets and the homes their animals are placed in. We feel really honored to house one of the pets from their facility. I have attempted to adopt 3 different times from PAWS Tinley Park. They have terrible communication and take forever to respond in timely manners. I submitted an adoption application and followed up 3 times and it took them 3 weeks to tell me that the dog was adopted by someone else. I was told when I visited the dog the first time that no one else had submitted inquiries at the time for that particular dog. Nonetheless, I was happy that the dog was adopted so I decided to continue to look for other dogs at the shelter. I recently went through a similar process and saw a dog that I loved. I emailed right away and called asking about how long it would take for approval so I could buy all supplies and toys in a timely manner. I also inquired if there was someone already approved for adoption so I didn't get my hopes up. The lady on the phone was extremely rude and told me "Just be patient" and didn't answer any of my questions. I decided to go in person to meet the dog and try to get more answers. All they told me was to just send another email. It took them 10 days to respond to my follow up email for them to tell me the dog was adopted. While I support PAWS as an organization, I will not be going to the Tinley Park location again. They need to improve their communication and adoption processes in order to make adopting a pet a positive experience with them. read more

PAWS of Tinley Park is not in the business of adopting out homeless animals. They are animal hoarders who prefer to keep animals locked up in small cages than allow them to be adopted by loving families. Because we allow our cat to sit on our back porch and stated on our application that we treat our cat with Advantage but our vet said we use Revolution, our adoption application was denied. So many loving families are refused adoptions based on more stringent rules than is required to adopt a child. Please go to Animal Welfare Society and adopt an animal that may be euthanized if not adopted. I will no longer donate to PAWS, as they prefer to hoard animals and should then finance their obsessions themselves. Please bring your donations to Animal Welfare Society. read more

It upsets me how accurate the reviews are for this location and potential the entire association. It took 2 weeks for them to deny my application after days in between emails asking the same questions that have already been answered. Everyday I was waiting for a response, hoping to give a kitten a forever home, i kept saying "just put me on a lie detector test" because they seemed to have trust issues. i get having trust issues and wanting kittens to go to good homes. i waited 2 weeks for them to tell me the kitten i wanted ended up being adopted. their process is rhetorical, time consuming and wasting and very inefficient and unsuccessful. the location itself has rude employees/volunteers and they cant give any information in application processes due to it being ONLY via email- again inconvenient and inefficient and a waste of time. I just want to scream and cry in their face because they wasted my time and got my hopes up. 2 WEEKS for nothing. i feel awful for these animals. read more

I don't think I would recommend this facility for adopting a cat. Possibly the dogs are easier but the adoption process for cats feels more like an interrogation process. It was strange and off putting. I've owned cats my entire life- I literally have no idea what they were grilling me about. After filling out the application I still received a follow up email asking "why do you want a cat?". Well, I obviously like cats? I'm not a dog person? I'm not sure how they expected me to answer that but it felt very much like a process to deny people under any circumstance. The lady that helped me out was nice, but the rest of the staff are very rude and act like you're bothering them upon entry. While I was there actively seeking to adopt a cat I saw several dogs get adopted out, but no cats. The facility itself isn't dirty, but it's not clean- it's very cluttered- like stuff EVERYWHERE. I am under the impression the cats are there to entice donations, not to actually find good homes for them. It was sad. I wouldn't return and I don't recommend you go here if you want a cat. My family and I have never adopted a dog before. PAWS made the process simple and painless. We went to PetSmart on Sunday to see the available puppies up for adoption and fell in love with one. After, we took a ride to the PAWS location just to look at the other puppies available. The place was clean and seemed to be organized well. We went home and my wife filled out the application to adopt. On Monday, the next day, my wife and PAWS were emailing back and forth and the next thing I know we had a meeting set up for that evening so they could meet our 2 dogs and the entire family. 45 minutes later we were walking out the door with our new puppy. To say this place is a cluster**** is an understatement. They've grown too big and have too many cooks in the kitchen-none of which knows what is going on. The communication amongst workers is pitiful. Clearly the idea of a no kill shelter run on donations is an awesome idea. Volunteerism is also absolutely fantastic. But you need someone in charge that is organized and efficient. The rank and file and volunteers are only as good as the person in charge. I fully understand that you need to be cautious about whom you may let adopt a pet. Do the due diligence of investigating when they fill an application. What you should not do is let droves of people fill out an application for 1 particular dog and then randomly decide whom is the best fit based on a feeling. Asking a couple probing questions while smoking a cigarette is not an interview. You can't possibly remember details of dozens of applicants when you don't have names in front of you. Take an application, investigate and decide. As soon as you get an application mark the pet application for adoption pending. Having no rhyme, reason or rationale as to whom is chosen is ridiculous. These people are great! I think they do the best they can to match animals with furever homes. I have adopted 3 dogs from them. Sometimes people don't understand why they have rules but this reduces the number of 'returns'; people who take an animal home and then return it can mess with the animal's psyche. I realize that sometimes it can't be avoided. Tinley Park PAWS does their best to keep this from happening. read more
