We waited three weeks for an open appointment. All the dogs we were interested in had already been adopted out. Great for those dogs!! When we arrived for our scheduled visit, we were not allowed to see a number dogs because "they don't get along with other dogs" even though we asked if we could bring our dog with for a meet and greet. We were only shown one dog, unfortunately, it was a three legged dog and we have many stairs. We were told we could make an an appointment with a dog being fostered. But they didn't tell us pre appointment. This all could have been communicated through email. What a disappointment. read more

South suburban humane society helped me a lot with the process of putting down my Roxy. Not only was it extremely affordable, but they also helped me get through the tremendous pain of losing a pet. The guy who put her down made sure that I took enough time with her & was very comforting. The whole staff was extremely kind through the whole process & never made me feel guilty for making the decision. I then bought my new puppy Duke from them & they helped me with everything to ensure that I left with him. This was very unlike the other shelters I went to because they want more than anything for every pet to get adopted. They had all his paperwork, microchip data, instructional tips, and even clipped his nails for me before we took him. Even though Duke has a couple fixable behavioral problems, he has become apart of our family. You can also tell they care for every animal in there. They knew all of the pets by name, and each pet had a huge space to themselves with a cot & occasional walks. All of the pets looked super healthy & I was glad to find a dog as great as Duke. South Suburban Humane Society has been there for me through my saddest moment to one of my happiest! I can never thank them enough for all that they have done for me. read more

Great experience in terms of knowledge, care and friendliness of staff. There are a lot of needy dogs and cats, so I am grateful to SSHS for providing a safe place for them to wait while their forever home is on the horizon. Okay so I applaud this place for the good they try to do for animals. I can say that about almost every shelter though. This actual place though? I'm truly dumbfounded and actually quite insulted by the way they treat their visitors! I went in recently with myself in the market looking to adopt a dog. A volunteer behind the front desk points to where the dogs are and I see myself to them. After looking at them all I find a Miniature Pinscher that I absolutely adored. I went back up to the front desk and asked if I could please see him. The volunteer asked me if I have ever had a min pin before. Though I have had several toy and terrier breeds throughout my life, a min pin had not been one. So I answered honestly and said "no, I have not." The volunteer then tells me that "he is not being shown or adopted out to anyone that has not owned a Miniature Pinscher before." ... WHAT?! ... WHAT LOGIC EVEN IS THAT?!!!! She then proceeds to say that he has some "typical min pin behavioral issues" and that they wanted "somebody who is already experienced with min pins" for him. Again - WHAT?!!! How does that even make sense?! You are going to deny a dog a forever loving home based off of somebody never owning his very specific breed before?!?!!!!! Truly baffling!!! This wasn't even a large, potentially "dangerous" dog breed, so I don't even feel safety was the issue here. Besides, any breed of dog can have any behavioral issue. The fact that I've had other breeds and other dogs before had no bearing whatsoever? I'm just an unknowing idiot apparently who doesn't even get to SEE said dog? Wow, cool. Maybe a more appropriate response to my inquiry would be to let me know that they have noticed some issues with his behavior, explain whatever those behaviors are to me, and then ask if I would be willing to work with the dog on this. I didn't even get that chance though. This place seriously wanted to get breed specific? Completely ridiculous. Wow. Again I appreciate what they do for animals. ...but their staff? Discriminating against owners prior breed ownership experience apparently! Holy moly. read more

IDK why it's taken me so long to review this place but I got my border terrier mix from them Dec 2013 & he's the love of my life. He was pretty sick when I adopted him, the staff was honest & said he might not survive when going over his meds with me but 5 + yrs later he's thriving! I would 100% recommend South Sub Humane bc they cared, followed up & did the best that they could with the lil resources they have. read more

This place may love animals but they care nothing about the time of the people who are coming to visit their facility. I drove AN HOUR AND 15 MINUTES in hopes of adopting a dog and I get up to the door and there's a sign saying that they CLOSED FOR THE DAY. Having adopted from here in the past, I know these animals are extremely well taken care of! You will get a dog or cat who has been attended to medically and usually fostered so that they are well socialized before they join your family. The variety and number of choices in breeds, size, weight, etc is very good. I dare you to leave without a new family member! read more

SSHS Spay/Neuter Clinic is a wonderful organization that truly serves the public. They offer spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats at an affordable rate without skimping on care. They have been around since the summer of 2008 and offer lower cost options with pit bulls and pit bull mixes, folks with lower income who have cats, and for feral cats. Their surgeries are wonderful, their staff compassionate, and my two dogs recovered quickly and easily. If you should have any post-op complications, the doctor will even see your pet again at no fee (other than meds, if needed) and you could not find a nicer vet or vet tech. Dr. Amen (formerly of Sibley) is kind, compassionate, and an animal lover. You can tell by the way she handles everyone's dogs and cats. Annette, the vet tech, has a special place in her heart for cats and is always willing to help owners with their concerns. The front desk answers calls as fast as they can in this super busy clinic, and they are very polite in going over details at the end of the day. They also ask you questions for your appointment to help you find the lowest cost possible. This organization is NOT in it for the $$$$ like some places. Every person there loves animals and is trying to help them. With tons of experience, an organized and compassionate staff, and a knowledgeable vet, this is the place to take your dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered! They don't do general vetting, but they will treat your pet with care and respect when you make the decision to have your pet fixed! read more

We got our Bradley from them 6yrs ago & had 2 have him put down just b4 x-mas. Couldnt handle not being a dog in the house. So we went back & got Charlie Brown. Bradley is very missed but Charlie helps alot 2 ease the pain. Both r great family members. Staff is great & the animals r even better. read more

I had a wonderful experience here. I adopted a senior dog yesterday. I originally just wanted to pet some puppies and be on my way but I fell in love! The staff was wonderful, the entire place was well maintained, the animals all looked healthy and well taken care of. They answered all my questions and were completely honest with me. As well as making sure I knew what I was getting myself into with a senior dog. Their adoption prices were reasonable and the adoption process was not overwhelming. Adoption can be frustrating but they made it easy and I couldn't be happier with my new fur baby. I'd recommend this place to anyone who's looking to add a new member to their family. read more

I rescued 2 dogs from here. The first was wonderful. I kept her 15 years. We just went back and got another doggie. We DID NOT go to SSHS. We went to their sister station in Homewood for the smaller dogs. Everything was wonderful but they sold us the wrong harness. I relied on them to provide me with the right size as this was my first time using this new harness. When the vet they recommended I utilize advised me the harness was not the right fit for my dog, I tried to take it back. I was advised I could purchase a new one, but they would not take it back even though it was their associate that recommended, picked it out and sold it to me. By all means, get your new family members from here, but you may not want to purchase your accessories as I made that mistake. read more

I just brought my puppy to their vaccination clinic in Olympia Plaza. The staff members are friendly and the prices for vaccinations are a lot more affordable than my vet. There were a lot of dogs ahead of me, but the staff are efficient. It is worthwhile to pay this clinic a visit if you're willing to wait. I will be returning in 4 weeks for my booster shot! I adopted one of my cats from SSHS. I visit the shelter often. This is the cleanest, most caring animal welfare organization I've ever been to, and I've been to lots of them all over Chicagoland and other cities I visit. SSHS offers low cost vaccinations and s/n services (at their nearby clinic) and low cost heartworm and flea and tick preventatives. They are truly an excellent resource for animal welfare and education. read more

Went in on Friday saw the dog we wanted and filled out the application. Was told it would be processed within 24 hours. Called next day and was told it should have been processed and would write a note. Called the next day, was told the women would be in the next day. Called the next day was told the same thing and that they would put it on the top of the applications. Called the next day the woman would be in the next morning. Nothing yet again. Called today the dog I wanted was adopted last night. Thanks to incompetence on their part I missed an opportunity. read more

Wonderful shelter filled with caring, dedicated people. They have been around for 40 years and do their absolute best for their animals. They are careful who they adopt pets too also. Very caring... I adopted a dog from there and they were great with helping me find the best pet for my family, processing and follow up questions. I sense they run on very limited resources but you never sense that they skimp on animal food or care. Seem to manage it well. They know their animals also. Wish there were shorter lines at the front desk though as everyone lingers there and ties up the desk. read more

So i have a cat that i needed to bring here and Ive heard such great things about this place but when i walked in the two girls at the counter saw me with my cat and rolled their eyes and said " here we go." I gave them a little history of the cat and they seemed to have not even cared and proceeded to tell us that if they have no room for him then they will put him to sleep.... that's a "no kill shelter"? then when we asked about possibly finding another shelter the girl then said (with an attitude) yea but if there's no room then they will put him to sleep there and most likely there are no other ones. wow.... i couldn't believe this after all the good things i heard about this place,and i ended up leaving in tears and all they did was laugh. read more

I would just like to let everyone know what south suburban put me through emotionally these last three days. I adopted a orange and white cat who is a 2 year old male. He was the most sweetest loving fun filled cat that I have ever met and it didn't take me much time to fall instantly in love with him. After spending two wonderful days with him I decided to take him to the vet for testing for the fip virus. i got the most heart breaking news that he was positive the very next day. Not only did I lose him but I now have to worry about my cat who I have had for 3 years that is clean. Praying to god she is not infected. Please be careful with this place they obviously don't care about prevention of diseases because they haven't even called me for proof of his result or to apologize for what they have done to me. I pray for these animals that they have and my heart goes out to you pongo and I hope you find a safe home with owners who have no other cats because you deserve the best home. I have adopted 2 dogs from SSHS, a year apart, and I think this shelter is the best. The adoption process is easy and not stressful. The two dogs I adopted are the best and I love them both dearly. Recently found a 6 week old puppy 3 weeks after I adopted the second dog. I will be taking her to the clinc to be spayed. They could use a little more help, but that is why they need more volunteers and funding. I will always get my pets from SSHS. read more

We attended the shelter's plant sale this past weekend and were invited to visit the shelter itself by the staff members (we had never visited this shelter before). We were very impressed. It seems that the staff and volunteers really care about the animals. When we entered, we were welcomed right away. A volunteer came up to me to ask me what type of dog I was looking for. The cages were clean and kept up with (a very difficult job to keep up with). Classical music is played in the rooms to calm the dogs and they told us that they're going to start an aromatherapy program for them to keep them calm in their cages. I was very impressed with how calm the doggies were in their cages. I would recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a dog, cat or bunny. read more
