I was taken here when I was placed on a 51/50 , a 72 hour hold. When I was about to be released they served me with a 52/50 which is a Mandatory 14 day hold. I believe that this facility is committing Medical Insurance Fraud. Every single patient that was on a 51/50 was placed on a 52/50. I had to see a judge in order to be released or I would have missed my brother's funeral. They are doing this to keep their beds full. Full beds ensure that are always paid. If I didn't have good insurance, they would have cut me loose. read more

I have been dealing with this hospital for 5 days now. Since I received a call from the social worker today from there regarding my partner who is in the psych ward, it proves I am on the emergency contact list. Yet, I am in the dark and can't get a call back regarding his condition. The receptionist I just spoke to was extremely rude. Since I will be his caregiver, it's important I know the diagnosis. All I've gotten is the run around. I would've given them less than a 1 star. I wouldn't recommend this hospital to anyone and certainly not my spouse. read more

Admission of 2 hours is unacceptable with sick people sitting in hall restrained not being seen by anyone while in distress. Front desk receptionist very rude and not helpful. Visiting is only half hour with no privacy. Person sits there and listens to your conversations. Go somewhere else if you have a choice. read more

They blatantly disregard patient rights here. Seems more like a detainment facility than anything else, no groups or therapy besides coloring or board games. BHA's (psych techs) were mostly okay. They were also pretty responsive with my requests (and there were definitely a few). Yesterday 4-2-2025 my family was told that our family member would be discharged by Dr. Coskinas, per our request and concerns. Today the doctor says no they need to wait for the court hearing planned for today. However, SW Tiffany was and is a Godsend. She was the complete opposite of what we had been experiencing, including the patient. She was compassionate thorough, and professional; if she didn't have the answer she got the answer. Even with her sweet spirit our loved one was ready to get out of this ridiculous place and we were tired of dealing with their shenanigans. As a healthcare provider myself I am beyond disappointed at this facility. The workers need to be required to take additional classes on deescalation along with learning to have empathy. I posted the grievance form below that I submitted. Christina the blonde behavioral care worker needs to be terminated. How do you expect these patients to remain calm when you stand there and agitate them purposely. Horrible treatment - beware the staff, they will treat you as if you were a criminal. Every 15 minutes throughout the night, they will turn on the light to "check" on you, then slam the door. Patients are sleep deprived. Doctors are quacks. They don't even put quantities for your prescription(s). Also, be aware of an orderly name, Damian. He grabs patients and bullying them. Nurses are lazy, disorganized, and slow. They have horrible bedside manners and could careless about the patients. They refuse to allow patients to take shows or basic hygiene, e.g., brush teeth. Lastly, if you come in with private insurance, i.e., blue cross, be prepared for a longer stay. They will keep you there as long as possible to "milk" the insurance. Unfortunately, there is not one positive thing to say about my 5 day stay there!! read more

The things they do at this place and the treatment of patients and their families have to be reported to the agencies with oversight. Our loved one was placed here because no other beds were available. The "psychiatrist" did not even evaluate our loved one during their stay, but somehow diagnosed them with paranoid schizophrenia, which is about the furthest applicable diagnosis for their symptoms (they have been properly evaluated by psychiatrists before). It is clear based on our experience and what seems like the experience of many on this thread that they just slap this diagnosis on patients without proper evaluation. They proceeded to treat them for this sham diagnosis, prescribing antipsychotics and keeping them sedated for days. This is completely dangerous. Our loved one was also denied their right to have family at a 52:50 hearing, after being informed multiple times we were to be included and told that we would be - as is our loved one's RIGHT. It is so sad that patients and families in a time of crisis have their desperation exploited. I truly implore anyone whose family needs help to refuse placement here. I feel absolutely horrible for those patients that don't have family to advocate for them. read more

Stole my iphone and Apple earbuds. Called 6 months later and said they found them and would mail them to me but never did. Total disregard for patient's wellbeing and property. The care I received was more like a punishment than anything close to "care", being there absolutely made me and my mental health situation worse after a suicide attempt and 10 days in the ICU. This place should be categorized as a prison type of institution not a medical care facility, and I am very serious. No exaggeration. read more

Not one star because the staff, nurses and psychiatrists, seem to care, although it can be difficult to get a straight answer to questions or concerns. Low rating mostly for phone calls. It is the most difficult thing to get anyone to answer the phone, and when you actually do, the department you're trying to get in contact with isn't available. You can call throughout the day and the machine will still say "all staff is busy with other phone calls". Wish there was more reliability. read more

Uneducated, jaded, and dismissive staff who, if spoken to, will look right through you then walk on by. The nurses are ornery, and take things personally. Imagine taking things personally in a mental hospital! Although there is an abundance of staff, they can't seem to find time for meeting patients' needs due to staring at their phones, and standing around the board in the nurse's station making jokes, and ignoring their surroundings. These people shouldn't be allowed to treat patients, or be involved in mental healthcare in any way. The facility is downright filthy, and patient neglect is rampant. We're talking women with hair matted into single, massive dreadlocks from lack of care. Women who, supposedly, are unable to care for themselves are not being cared for by anyone else either. I roomed with a catatonic woman who also suffered from severe back pain. She was not offered any sort of physical rehabilitative services, nor was she ever rotated for the three days I cohabitated with her. I worry for her now. Food was sometimes "off"/rotten. I was denied my prescribed medications to treat my neurological disorder, and so needlessly suffered physical symptoms I should otherwise not have had to. Although one of those symptoms is severe insomnia, I wish I could chalk all of my complaints up to bring cranky. That is, infuriatingly, not the case. I was denied the use of my CPAP. I was offered a freaking nebulizer instead. I demanded this idiot nurse explain to me why she ever thought that was a good idea, and all she kept saying was "it's a breathing treatment that helps you breathe." I told her to explain herself again without saying "breathing treatment." Who can guess what she said? That's right, she said nothing. Imagine being a nurse, and not knowing the difference. The "psychiatrist" diagnosed me with schizophrenia after my "assessment" which consisted of them asking me how I was doing. Answer: I'm tired. That was the 100% full extent of our interaction. Nary a word more was spoken. Dear Reader, I was admitted of my own volition for DEPRESSION. But, apparently, now I'm schizophrenic! I had to win a hearing to be released from this penetentiary. The wards are separated by men and women versus by acuity level, so someone like me who needed peace, rest, and therapy, was forced to share space with stark, raving lunatics screaming throughout the halls. There was no counseling or anything else of therapeutic value. No way to distract yourself. No way to engage. Just a lot of nothingness to increase sadness and anxiety. The day I left was the happiest I've been in a long, long time, so if being a place that is so horrible that it makes patients appreciate life outside of its dank, dirty walls is the end game, then well played! And this is just the summary, my guys. Don't even get me started on the showers. I believe this place exists to defraud Medicaid by falsifying documents, and violating patients' civil rights. Have you read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest? Yeah, THAT. Avoid this facility at all costs! Your freedom or the freedom of your loved ones is at stake here. They don't care about mental health whatsoever. They literally do not care. All they want is to collect insurance payments. Edited to add that I am an upper limb amputee, and so faced a number of significant challenges due to a lack of accommodations. Most notable is the way this facility is set up makes it impossible to wash my own hand. There is no work around. It cannot be done. Having to chase down and hound some disgruntled and disinterested staff member to wash my hand for me at times that one would, hopefully, usually wash their hands was dehumanizing, and took much longer than it should if it happened at all. read more

Edit: thank you to all who have reached out asking if our brother has been found. Sadly after 9 days of searching for him after they let him go and a missing persons report filed, we got a call from the coroner that he had past in a parking lot the day before Thanksgiving. Our family is devastated and grieving the loss of the precious soul :( If I could give this place a zero star I would!! My experience in the last five weeks has been horrendous. We put my brother-in-law there to get off of alcohol. I called just about every day to speak to his nurse, social worker, anyone who could give me information. Nobody would answer the phone, nor return phone calls. Finally on one phone call when I was so irate they let me speak to my brother-in-law. He said please come pick me up this place is awful. He finally got his discharge papers and was supposed to be transported to Board And Care, and he never made it there. I called the Board And Care and verified that he arrive safely and they said he never showed up. I called Pacific Grove and they said they put him on an Uber at 5:20 PM but how do you put a mentally ill recovering from alcohol person in an Uber by themselves!!!!! I would have thought that being 81% oxygen level 100 pounds schizophrenic with many damages that they would at least make sure that he got to the Board And Care shame on them for not following up to verify and shame on them even more that he was not escorted there! I had to reach out to the sheriffs and local police to have file a missing persons report And the Riverside PD said this place is awful to deal with that they can't even get inside the doors! That scares the crap out of me wondering what kind of treatment my brother-in-law endured while he was there! I also wonder if he even was able to leave the facility or if something happened to him and they haven't told me. They said they fulfilled their commitment in giving him an Uber to the Board And Care and that they don't have responsibility after they put them in the car, but did they even really put him in the car nobody can give me clear information on that! Now I have a brother-in-law who is missing and not in good condition and I am furious! If you love your loved one do not under any circumstance put them at this facility! read more

I went in detoxing from alcohol and came out damaged!!! 72 hours became 7 days until my son visited and saw the awefulness I was experiencing and removed me "against medical advice". 7 days with no sleep due to fear I came out emotionally wounded. It's pretty obvious that the phones are tapped at this facility every time I'm trying to speak to a loved one here there's a echo, so there shouldn't be a damn echo because when I'm on the phone with somebody else, my phone is completely fine and the phone fault the phone calls just Dropped out of nowhere coincidentally which I find humorous, considering the fact that I know about phone calls and hacking and phones being tapped. I'm not stupid and I'm pretty sure it's fucking illegal to listen to a phone call that's not consensual for another person to listen to or have it recorded since we live in California but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong sounds like a huge legal issue to me. read more

It's been almost 10 months since my loved one was at Pacific Grove, following his psychotic episode, and it is only now that I have the strength to write a review about this place. It was a harrowing experience from start to finish, and I would never, never recommend going there or putting your loved one there. The night we checked our family member in after a long and traumatic day in the ER, we were going through the unfamiliar check in process, trying to find out what paperwork needed to be signed, how to get the ROI, etc.. The woman in charge lectured us on how we needed to "respect" our loved one and stop asking for an ROI and paperwork. Her rudeness made it clear she viewed us as the enemy, which was the final straw after the nightmare we had been through for the previous 18 hours or so. Those other reviews which say the staff treat you like a criminal are saying the truth. Not every worker there is that way, for sure, but those that are that way ruin everything for everyone else. We were given very little information about what we could bring for our loved one, and the staff let our loved one stay in nothing but a hospital gown through the next day. After we brought him clothes, they did not give them to him, which we found out later when we came for the 30 minute daily allowed visit and found him still shivering in the hospital gown he arrived in the day before. I had to advocate for him to get his belongings, yet there was a definite sense that I had better be careful, because it was clear you don't want to get on the wrong side of these people. They have all the power in that situation. They can keep your loved one there just as long as they please, and do whatever they please, and there is little you can do. You can't even have your loved one transferred to another facility if you are not happy with the care; I know because I tried. They would not release his medical record to him, even after he was released from the facility after a week staying there. He filled out all the paperwork to have the records sent, but they just responded by saying basically: "you don't need those records and we are not going to send them." I wonder if that is even legal. But by then, we were so traumatized that we just wanted to be free of them and wanted no more interaction with anyone there. If your loved one needs psychiatric care, do not take him to Pacific Grove. read more

The worst experience of my life. They claim to have 14 different activities for the patients each day and we did 2. They stick you in a room with a TV and the patients argue over which show to watch. Many of the patients are so drugged up that they sleep most of the day. There is absolutely zero mental health assistance and I only saw a doctor once. This is a very sad place and should be investigated asap. read more

I had an appointment to see Dr. Harvey Nurick, but it was canceled, 2 times in a row. In the 1st one, someone from the office called me saying that the doctor wanted to see me earlier than the appointment time. I said Yes, but Dr. Nurick had already left the office when I got there. My appointment was rescheduled for the following week, but when I got there it was canceled again, the 2nd time, after letting me wait for 45 min in the waiting area. Such a bullshit! How do I trust it won't happen again? No wonder, so many bad reviews here. read more

The most traumatizing experience I'd had to that point . I was experiencing a reaction to an antibiotic an antibiotic cepro !!! I was Floxed . the doctors didn't recognize what was going on so they proceeded to treat me with benzodiazepines and benzodiazepine and psych. Meds they gave me Akathisia in there . I have been completely disabled from their treatment now for 5 years this was the most horrible place I've ever been in. I do not recommend this place it's filthy. they treat you like an animal and like I said I am completely destroyed. AKATHISIA Benzodiazepine are extremely dangerous.. 1 MG equivalent to 20 MG of valume. Never stop any medication abruptly! read more

Avoid this place if you love your loved ones. They sent my mom to a homeless shelter that didn't even accept her upon arrival. My mother battles drug addiction and bipolar schizophrenia. I spent 7 days there. It was dirty, beds were uncomfortable, and I didn't shower the entire time because the showers looked like a science experiment gone wrong. It's not intended to be Club Med. I got my meds on time, the food was decent, and they had some therapy groups. It was a safe place for me to get my meds balanced. It would not be my first choice, but it definitely does not deserve the one star reviews. read more

I was recently in this hospital around November 16-18. Worst experience I've ever had, scary even. The staff was rude, not much towards me, but towards other patients. They would yell at some of the elderly for no reason, maybe out of annoyance. Very unprofessional. They almost gave me someone else's medications for seizures, which I do not have and I only caught it when I asked to look at what she was giving me only to read it was under someone else's name. The night staff was usually a lot nicer. They're stingy as hell when giving snacks. When my "discharge" day came up, I signed all paperwork and got my belongings getting ready to go home when the EMT arrived asking for me. The staff acted dumb as hell confused why they were picking me up. They told me I was going to Loma Linda VA hospital since I am a veteran and will be discharged there. That makes no sense at all. I didn't have a good feeling about it, but had no choice. They took me to Loma Linda and the nurse there told me I was voluntarily getting emitted. I was extremely upset and explained to them what I was told and what happened. The doctor came in and talked to me and was confused why they would even do that. They got a hold of one of the nurses, Brandy, from Pacific Grove and she told the doctor I was fully aware and agreed that I was being transferred when that was a complete lie. They told me multiple times verbally that I was being discharged, not transferred. It's like they tried to make me seem like I was fucking delusional and I didn't know what I was talking about. I ended up getting emitted for another night at Loma Linda since they were required to once someone walks in. They were very understanding of the situation and let me go home early. I don't understand how this hospital is even up and running. This place is traumatizing and literally hell. read more

Pacific Grove Hospital (Outpatient) is a great place to receive alcohol & drug after care service. Coming back from recovery, I didn't know where else to go for after care. Pacific Grove is the place to get PHP or IOP and continue after care for both mental & substance abuse. They have friendly dedicated & caring staff. Arleth & Ray are great therapist that will work with your needs to get mental stability. They will help you work on obtain the right coping skills in order for you to remain sober. The place is a pit. Chaotic, unorganized, understaffed, unhygienic. The temperature was kept at 64F & everyone including staff was always cold, even when bundled up. I did not witness direct abuse but saw neglect repeatedly. To be fair, some of the staff were really trying to do their jobs but others were clueless. One aide, who was supposed to be watching an elderly patient, left her in the middle of the night to chit chat at the nurses station. The patient fell getting out of bed & split her head to the point she needed sutures. A completely avoidable 'accident.' If you or a loved one needs psychiatric care, don't go to Pacific Grove Hospital. read more

Nobody from this facility has contacted me 2 full days after my wife transferred there, and when I call, they refuse to even acknowledge if she is a patient there, even though I was the one who had her transferred there from a Kaiser hospital. Kaiser nurses assured me prior to the transfer to this location that I would have full access and be able to advocate on my wife's behalf. Apparently, even though this is a Kaiser-contracted facility, they have their own rules and totally disregarded the information provided to them by our health insurance provider who contracts with them. I even dropped off clothes while my wife was still being admitted (the front desk took them and told me she'd get them when she was done admitting), and also they told me someone would call me that day (never happened). When you call this place, you better have the patient code or they will not even acknowledge the existence of the patient, but even with a code, there is a consent form they make you sign or nothing can be released, so if your loved one is catatonic or in a coma or other type of frame of mind that is not rational and is unable to sign the form, be ready to not hear from ANYBODY for an extended period of time. My wife has been there for 2 days and not one person from this facility (Doctor, nurse, case worker, etc) has contacted me to update me or speak about my wife's situation. Once I was given a code to receive information (and they actually acknowledged she was a patient), they transfer you to the nurses station and phone rings for hours before anybody picks up. When a nurse finally did, he told me the code is useless because the consent form isn't signed. I told him wife is catatonic and cannot sign anything, and then he hung up on me. My wife has sleep apnea and needs a CPAP machine nightly. The entire reason she was sent to this facility versus others, was because they are supposedly equipped to handle breathing emergencies. So the first night she was there, she was not provided her CPAP. When my wife finally called me early on the second evening, I told her to ask the nurse for her CPAP machine and it was given to her. Then the next morning my wife called me to tell me that all of the electrical outlets in all of the patient rooms weren't working, and the only room that had working outlets was the game room and they would put in there if she wanted. UNACCEPTABLE! They have one phone for the patients to call out on, but when my wife uses it to call me, patients routinely walk up to her and harass her and there is zero privacy for patients who want to speak to loved ones. Once it became clear that this hospital was not "CPAP Friendly" as they proclaimed they were to our health insurance provider (Kaiser), they could not get rid of my wife fast enough (it was great!). Rather than keeping her for a prolonged period of time while they "balanced her meds" or ensured she was safe and ready to return to her home (for those of you in similar situations, you know EXACTLY what I'm referring to), they discharged her without even having a doctor sign off on the discharge form (apparently it must have been done either after she left or remotely, because she was not seen by a doctor the day they discharged her, which is basically unheard of). In fact (and to date its now been two weeks since my wife was released and also since I began writing this review), we have never heard from one single medical professional at this facility. Not a doctor, nurse, or anybody else regarding my wife's hospitalization. The only person who was nice enough to reach out to me while she was still in their hospital, was a social worker who facilitated the quick release. The last thing I want to mention is that all of this went down during the current Coronavirus event. You would think that under those extreme circumstances without any visitation possible, that they would ensure the patients and their loved ones (ie I'm her husband who had her sent there!), would have as much access to the patient as possible (via phone, etc). This place wouldn't even acknowledge to me she was their patient for two full days while I stressed out and worried incessantly, and then I find out that she was without her CPAP for her entire stay. These people are damn lucky I don't sue their ass. (But I have filed a nice grievance with the major health plan that they contract with, so we'll see how that goes).... read more

I cannot get through to anyone there to speak with me about a patient there - I went there and they acted as if they couldn't speak to me. Told me to call and make an appt to speak with someone. I've left three messages. Not one call back. It's traumatic enough when your loved one has to be admitted to such a place, but it's even worse when no one will tell you what is going on with them either. I was told some of the staff was very nice. I understand it's probably difficult working in a place like this. But as I stated in a VM message, please put yourself in the shoes of someone who needs to know what's going on with their loved one. What if it was YOUR loved one and you weren't being communicated with about their status? Good Lord :-( read more

My Daughter was there for 8 days she had 1 great nurse , and 2 that were ok. Absolutely ZERO communication except your insurance information. You cannot get through for a status update or a return call about your loved one but they will FORSURE call you about being paid. She spoke of abuse and came home with several bruises and even more trauma. This place needs staff that ACTUALLY CARES, the administration staff was nice and informative but will give you an "I don't know" so fast! In all actuality no one knows anything, they will never answer the phone and SOME nurses are abusive. So mad right now. read more

My wife has been there now for a week. I have called to speak to a supervisor, a social worker, a patient advocate, a doctor that is looking after my wife. I have left messages almost daily last week. I have still yet to get a phone call back. The only phone call I have is to pay my wife's insurance bill, twice now in fact. I understand this place is busy, what place isn't? This place should understand that taking care of patients is great, but not letting the family know how they can help, or what is going on isn't. This place drops the ball way too much. I am not sure really what I can do any more but continually call. read more
