Tight spaces, confusing entrances, a mysterious dead end, coin operated, broken EV charges and dark and gloomy is this underground garage. The parking spaces are very tight. Even if you drive a compact car you will have to have the body of an acrobat to get in and out of your car. I'm not sure who designed these spaces but it was likely a bean counter with a healthy salary. Confusing entrances. Apparently there are two. I was very confused when one was shut down for the day. I guess it doesn't take much to confuse me - but in my defense it was my first time to this fine establishment. A mysterious dead end plagues this garage. Drive down it and you will be stuck and bewildered as to your next move. A road that goes to nowhere. Now you've been warned to follow the signs in the garage. Coin operated parking garage. I've never seen that in my life. Usually you get a ticket and it gets printed out with the date and time you entered. I have no idea how that information gets assigned to your coin. 8th wonder of the world. Broken EV chargers. If you drive an EV you might count on this working here. Range anxiety is still a thing with EV drivers. Likely it has no blame on the garage itself and is probably more an issue with the provider of the chargers. The garage is underground. Its dark and gloomy and there is no sunlight anywhere. Somehow very disorienting. Furthermore when you go to the elevators a door shuts behind you and as your waiting for the elevators your in this area of very stuffy thick air. Once you get out of the elevators your in the main plaza right where you likely want to be - which is the big plus of parking here. read more

We've parked at this parking garage under Pacific Renaissance Plaza for many years. It's currently around $2 per 30 minutes (as of Feb 2025). The garage is covered, which is a huge plus when the weather isn't great - you can get in and out of your car comfortably without dealing with rain or harsh sun. Finding parking has also never been an issue for us, and we've never experienced any car break-ins here, but don't let your guard down and take your valuables with you They've installed hand sanitizer stations near the elevators, but one of them was empty on our last visit. Taking the elevators up is super convenient, and payment for parking is straightforward. You can either grab a yellow token upon entry (my preference since you can pay sooner and maybe save a little) or tap your credit card to get in. Once you've paid, you need to leave the garage within 15 minutes. The process to pay is quick and easy - pay at the machine or with the attendant at the counter near the elevators in the plaza. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to find street parking in Chinatown especially during the day. This parking garage is nicely located in the middle of Chinatown and should be walking distance to wherever you need to go in Chinatown. The parking spots in this garage are narrow and a lot of the spots near the elevators are usually taken. It might be worth parking a little bit farther where there's less cars and to make getting in and out of the parking spot easier. Be careful as some areas inside the garage are dead ends. Don't lose the yellow coin token. You will need it when you pay in person at the cashier booth or at the self pay stations near the elevators on the street level inside the Pacific Renaissance Plaza. Came by the other day to eat in Oakland Chinatown and parked here. There are 2 entrances on either side of the garage for easy entry and exit. Upon entering, pick up a yellow plastic coin and pay for parking before going back to the car! There is a 15 minute grace period from the time of payment to the time of departure. $1/half hour. I was only parked here for 1 hr 15min and it came out to $3.00 -- I thought I would get charged $2.50, but nope. I recommend you to keep track of what time you enter the structure! I also suggest you to stay for each of the full 30mins cause you get charged the full 30min even if you stayed less (if that made any sense). Most Chinatowns I have visited, as a matter of fact, all of the Chinatowns I have visted, have been in urban areas. The majority of the residents live locally, work locally, eat locally and hang-out, you guessed it, locally. So why isn't there more parking? It's because the place is darn popular with everyone from out of town that parking is impossible to find. And who really wants to score a spot on the street? Seriously? The delivery trucks double park, the folks dropping off their grandma and auntie double park, you may be ready to leave but be stuck in your spot. So for $2 per hour, I don't mind parking at the Public Parking Garage. It's pretty easy to get in and the price can't be beat. The only drawback for me is that the spots are alittle tight. And you know, you never wanna be in a tight spot. Well sometimes, but lets keep it G rated.. So if you don't want to make circles around and around the block, then head for the garage. read more

They recently redid the parking payment system from the tickets to this coins with a micro-chip in there. There's a couple good things about it: - They have kiosks to pay for parking which expands your ability to pay by credit card. They also have they kiosks on the second floor. That makes it a lot easier to pay for parking. - Now they charge by the half-an-hour, so it won't automatically just round up to the next hour, so during the day unless you find free parking it might be worth it to park in the garage. read more

First I want to comment on previous comments made about having to pay a full day's fee if you lose the coin they give you (vs a ticket). Every garage has this policy in place! If you lose your ticket (in this case, your coin), you're going to have to pay for the full day. How do they know if you stayed 30 minutes or 8 hours or overnight? Then anyone can park there for a full day and just say they lost their ticket or coin and only parked an hour. Come on! Use your head here guys. This parking garage is decent enough, nothing to complain and nothing to rave about. It is centrally located in Oakland downtown and Chinatown. Hey...this was my last resort. I was running late. Paying for parking is a No No in Chinatown. My mom was so upset at me the first time I confessed I parked in the garage. It was the look of deadly shame, the "I taught you better than that" look. But, if you're running late, in a hurry and don't mind paying for $2/hour be my guest. It is a pretty okay spot to park your car. It's on the edge of Chinatown, its relatively safe, and your car isn't going to get scratched, spit on, or have boxes of produce leaning on it. Secure underground parking in Oakland Chinatown. Enter on either Webster or Franklin Street. Pick up a parking token on the drive in. It's not cheap. Two levels of parking for guests. You'll notice that everyone likes to park in the sort of middle of the floor where the elevators are located. No stairs. Take your parking token with you. When you leave, you take your token and stick it into the parking machine on either floor near the elevators, or go to the booth on the first floor. New parking incentive: something like a dollar or two for parking Monday through Friday nights after 5pm. A really good deal. However, if you get there a minute before 5pm, you pay the regular price even if you park there for four hours after 5pm, so don't go in until 5pm on Mondays through Fridays. I wanted to park here on a Friday morning so I could eat with my grandma. Turns out the Webster street exit was closed for no good reason so everyone was stuck waiting at the Franklin entrance. I kid you not, traffic was so horrible that I was stuck at one light for at least 5 cycles (mostly due to greedy and incompetent drivers trying to cut into the line for the parking garage) when I finally get to the entrance, they said their parking was "full" and started turning away cars. MASSIVE WASTE OF TIME. Don't bother with this pathetic excuse of a parking garage, you might as well spend half an hour driving around looking for street parking. read more

Lights were flickering and it felt like zombies were ready to attack us any moment. We ended up walking up the vehicle entrance and exit ramps to and from the shopping center. The entrance that I entered in was 988 Franklin St. I went at night in Oakland for a meeting and left about 10:45 pm on a Wednesday. Problem was the door was locked when I went to try and pay. I could not find any payment kiosks in the garage so to be honest I still don't have a clue where to pay. in the City and Silicone valley the pay kiosks and in person payment booths are everywhere. It was weird. When you enter, instead of a ticket you get a coin with a micro chip in it. The problem is that you have to remember what time you came in which sucks. There really isnt' any record. It's a terrible system because they charge you by the half hour and you could easily overpay and you wouldn't know it. You can use your credit or debit card at the exit's. You put in your coin at the exit and then you put in your debit or credit card and pay your fee. The Gate will open and then you leave. Prices were really reasonable and if I was in Oakland often, this is where I'm parking. They are horrible mean terrible people here. I had a hard time getting my 94 year old father out of his wheelchair into our car, and ended up holding him up for 10 minutes by sheer will knowing that if I let him down, he would fall to the floor and there would be no way to pick him up my myself. I had already pushed the wheelchair aside and I couldn't move with him in my arms. It took me 10 minutes to convince him to use his legs to stand so he could sit into the car. When it was over, I was shaking and near tears. Needless to say, I took more than the 15 minutes they give you to get out of the garage. The coin wouldn't let me out. I called for help, took forever for someone to come and when I told him what happened, not only was he completely unsympathetic, he said "it doesn't matter, you still have to pay." I told him that I was not capable of putting my dad in his chair again going outside to pay at the ticket stand, and trying to put my dad back into the car. "You still have to pay." Astonished, I took out my wallet and gave him cash, and he rudely told me that's not how they do things here. I needed to find my credit card so I could pay (not that he made it easy to understand how they do things here). I told him that I thought they were horrible to treat people this way, and he started yelling at me. OK, I was already distressed and his attitude just stoked my agitation, so I called him a bad man and mean (that's all I could think of at the time). They would probably make an ambulance pay if there was an emergency. And they should put up a sign to let all people with disabilities know that they will need to pay more to get out of the garage because of their disability. They are bad bad mean people. read more

Very poor customer service by the attendant sitting in a cart right by the entrance. My family has regularly visited this shopping center and parked in this garage for the past 10+ years. Yesterday, as he was parking the car, my dad's parking token ( - by the way, the stupidest and most cost INeffective changes imaginable - there are so many complaints of incorrect readings because whatever sensor that is tasked with "wiping" the timestamps...doesn't actually wipe them) slipped off his dashboard and into one of the air vents in his car. There was no "lost token" posting around him explaining next steps or payment requirements. Concerned and wanting to ensure that he would be able to exit the facility, my parents approached a parking attendant that was sitting on a gator cart, watching the parking entrance. When asked about what to do about a lost token, the attendant responded with, "You get it out." And then he turned away. If we could get the token out of the vent, we would have done so and wouldn't have tried asking for help. My mother asked if he could maybe help more, since they were asking for help. The attendant then proceeded to yell at my 65-year-old parents saying that, "I'M JUST TRYING TO DO MY JOB." All the attendant had to say was, "Unfortunately, if you lose a token you must pay the daily maximum of $30." Who needs Chinese people protesting Jimmy Kimmel when apparently Chinese people hating on their own people (and elders at that) seems prevalent enough. read more

I never liked this parking garage much in the first place, but unfortunately in proximity to Oakland Chinatown and its businesses it is a convenient necessity and I have used this place once in a while for a number of years, but tonight's terrible experience tipped me over the edge to write about this so called " business". The experience one other reviewer (CD) wrote below is quite similar to what I had to deal with in trying to exit out of there. For one, this garage is not structured well and the spaces are very narrow ( to maximize profits , I suppose, which I find quite hilarious since it's always half empty anyway.) , and it is a virtual labyrinth to navigate since the signage in there is so vague and the lighting is so dim. Two, Their payment system utilizes a ridiculous plastic coin which their machines spits out and you must keep with you in order to pay to get out. I've never seen any other garage use this recipe for disaster system anywhere else, for if you lose this plastic coin, you're shit out of luck , because these assholes will make you pay a full day's parking price no matter what your reason maybe. Three, the staff and security here are in general very condescending and rude. To be fair, I suppose this being Oakland Chinatown and downtown, if you work long enough here and have to deal with the crazies on a daily basis, you would become jaded, but that's no excuse from not being able to tell the difference between the nutjobs and the regular customers like us, which they obviously can't figure out. So to continue, My 79 year old mother and I had just finished eating dinner at Shooting Star Cafe across the street, and since we were aware that the garage closes by 11pm like the sign said at the elevator area , we started making our way back at 10:35pm. When we reached the payment window, it was manned by a young Chinese man in his late 20s or early 30s, wearing a white long sleeve dress shirt and glasses. As soon I tried to give him the coin he immediately berates me by saying "Hurry up! We're closing here by eleven!" Taken aback, I replied, "Well , that's why we're here." The bill was $2.00 , but since I did not have any small bills , I gave him $20 bill. This guy throws his hands up and exclaims "I don't have enough change for that!" Really?? This punk working as cashier has no change for a lousy twenty at end of his shift? Getting exasperated by his attitude, I said, "How do you want me to pay then? By credit card?" He threw the coin and money back at me and said "Use the machine over there!", pointing at the automated machine by the elevators. By this time , I wanted to tell this jerk what I thought of his ass, but my mother was already tired from teaching at Laney College all day and needed to go home and rest, so I just ignored him and payed the fee due at the machine and made our way through the elevator to our car below. As I made our way to the exit gate, Io and behold, both sides of the exits are coned off! What the hell?! Not sure if there was another exit nearby (as I said , the signage is vague) I proceeded to move the cones out of the way so I could exit. I proceed to the gate and deposited the coin into the exit station. As the turnstile rose , I hear a shout coming from the elevator area. "Hey!! Why are you moving my cones??!!" It was the same jerk that had "served" us at the cashier window a few minutes earlier. "This gate is closed! You have to use the other exit!" By this time, I was had reached the end of my patience , and I shouted back at him " What other exit?! YOU never told us any thing! And by the way, it's still 10:50pm! We still have ten minutes!" , pointing at my watch. "I don't care! You don't move my cones! The exit is on the lower level! Turn the car around!" I was almost ready to give him a right hook. " I already put the coin in the machine! We just want to exit! It's that simple!" He retorted, " The street gate is already closed ! You can't get out this way!" Indeed, the gates were closed which he never indicated at the beginning to us either. "Come back in and use the new coin to get out!" By this time, my tired, elderly mother was becoming distressed, and asking "What's going on? Why is he upset at us?" As I U turned my way back into the garage, and headed to the other exit below, I told this SOB, "You know what dude, I'm not too familiar with this garage, and you could've told me that the other exit was open before!", "You should know already! We close by 10:45!", was his reply. I said " You know what? I can't read your mind, and you are rude! Give me your name!" With that, he glared back at me and walked off towards the elevators again. Take note, this incident occurred on Thursday night , May 12, 2016 at 10:50pm. I couldn't get this young punk's name since of course , he would not give it to me when I demanded so, so if anyone knows , please note his name here on Yelp. first of all my family and I park here all the time, there has never been any trouble. the price is the same as on the street and saves a lot of hassle in looking for parking and since this is Chinatown we're talking about. who knows what would happen to your car if you don't park it in a secure location and two dollars an hour for parking is an okay price despite what other people might say, but i am writing this review for a different reason. There might be a scam happening here in which when you pay for parking as you leave, the person you paid claims that you paid a dollar or two short of what you're suppose to. This happened to my girlfriend and I today when we were leaving. our ticket cost 4 dollars and we paid them 4, but 10 seconds later she knocks on the window and gets our attention and claims we paid only 3 and demanded another dollar.
