    Gi, JIU jitsu

I was looking for a JIU jitsu studio so can put my 6 y/o daughter in, so she can learn self defense, discipline and hard work. I found that in tatami fit and teacher Chelsea! Seeing all the kids come in and develop these life skills and discipline is great for our kids and our community! After seeing teacher Chelsea train my daughter and other kids, I got inspired to pursue the life long mastery of JIU-jitsu as well. Now my daughter and I have a bond and life skills we can share! It's also a Gracie school certified JIU-jitsu school! Another great feature is you get 25% off your dues after first family member join!

Their Jiu Jitsu program is not one you'll typically find at other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu only schools. It's taught by 3 people Erico - a Brazilian Black Belt, Brad - a traditional Small Circle Jiu Jitsu stylist, and his daughter Chelsea - a Brazilian purple belt. I sat in on an adult class and both Erico and Brad both wound up teaching half the class. It's unique in that half the class is dedicated to traditional standup Jiu Jitsu and then the later half is on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). It's an extremely non competitive environment and great for adults who are just starting out and have never had any martial arts training. Suffice to say the students here won't be winning any tournaments but nor would they want to. Typically students here don't roll/spar on a regular basis as Brazilian jiu-jitsu only studios do. They are REALLY good with small kids and IMHO this is where they shine. Classes are small and personalized and they teach with discipline while having fun. I've started bringing my daughter here and she loves it.

    Tatami kids, poised and ready.

Ask the Community - Gracie JiuJitsu Alameda

For the combative class is it warm up then technique's or just straight techniques for the hour long class? hope to hear from you soon!

You can arrive a bit early to warm up.. We review what we practiced last class for 10min and then we will be instructed through the movement of the day with breakdown of movement and practice of each.. it's a great inclusive, slower paced approach…

Headed by Mike Prudencio, One World Jiu Jitsu Academy had its humble beginnings and has grown significantly through the years and within that span has been home to quite a few experienced BJJ practitioners. Mike and his team do a fine job in cultivating a strong community through respect for each other and the gym - the annual friend and family social events always have a good showing! Whether you've had some experience in the sport and are looking for a new gym with great people to train, a completely newcomer to anything related martial arts, or perhaps a parent looking for an extracurricular for your child, One World will open their arms to you with something to offer. Although One World was not our first introduction to Brazilian jiu jitsu while we researched for gyms, it ranked highest on our list due to the location, flexibility of the scheduling, training space, and coaching staff. Just a couple blocks away from the highway and being quite central in Newark, the gym is easily accessible. There's plenty of parking since most of the other establishments here aren't well frequented or mainly warehouses/non-customer facing offices. Adult classes are offered multiple times a day (early morning at around 630, mid morning at 11, and evening at 6) almost everyday of the week. The kids classes are also offered multiple days of the week (weekday evenings around 5 and Saturday mornings around 10). There may be different days/times for gi and no gi but they have a convenient online calendar that is kept up to date. Each session typically consists of warmups, drills, techniques, and open rounds of rolling. They also have two mat areas. The main mat area is huge and can accommodate large classes (sometimes the kids classes can get upwards of 30-40) with still ample amount of space for training and drilling. The secondary mat area is primarily used for no gi training when the main mat area is being used for instruction. And finally the coaching staff consists of some really experienced instructors in addition to Coach Mike. Their attention to detail and ability to motivate the athletes adds tremendous value to each visit. In addition, the instructors for the kids classes are so patient while firm to enable each kid to grow and advance at their own pace. For those looking to advance their game, Mike and his team of coaches will enable you to hone the fundamentals in addition to expanding your toolkit of techniques. The group of folks coming to this gym check their ego at the door and are all very willing to share and learn from each other. There are quite a few competitors who will certainly push your limits and help you get to the next level. If you're a newbie, welcome to the club! We all started one way or another but what's important is that you start and keep coming back. Time on the mat will level up your game and with some patience and dedication, you'll continue to build confidence, get fit, and develop practical skills for self defense and competitions. And as a parent, you'll feel right at home with fellow parents who have also sought out an activity for their children to participate in to gain intangible skills (confidence, self discipline, conflict resolution, social belonging, mentorship to name a few) while learning some practical techniques for self defense. They start children as young as 7 years of age but it may also depend on their maturity. I personally came in with no formal martial arts experience and have to say, it was one of the best decisions. As a father, finding a new hobby to enjoy on my own as well as with my children and redefining myself as the kiddos grow up has made this journey a very rewarding experience. The community has been great to foster that personal growth and it's been fun to bring the new generation into the sport. Overall, One World Jiu Jitsu Academy is by far one of the greatest places for an in-depth introduction and continued education of Brazilian jiu jitsu. If you're interested, consider coming in for a trial class and see for yourself if the gym and sport is right for you!

This academy stands out because of its culture…read more The instruction is excellent, and also what really makes this place special is the people. The coaches teach the details behind each technique instead of just showing moves, so you learn not only what to do, but why it works. That approach has made a huge difference in my own understanding of jiu-jitsu. The atmosphere is welcoming and respectful. Whether you're brand new or have years of experience, everyone is treated like they're part of the team. The advanced belts are approachable, the training is challenging without feeling intimidating, and there is a genuine culture of helping each other improve. One thing I really appreciate is that standards are high. Progress and promotions feel earned, which creates an environment where people are motivated to keep learning and getting better. At the end of the day, a great academy isn't just measured by how good the instructors are--it's measured by the kind of community they build. This is a place where people enjoy training, support one another, and continue growing both on and off the mats. If you're looking for a jiu-jitsu academy with outstanding instruction, a winning competition team, a positive culture, and teammates who genuinely want to see you succeed, I highly recommend giving this place a try.

I really wanted to love this place because, to be fair, the quality of the Brazilian jiu jitsu…read moretraining here is excellent. The instructors clearly know what they're doing, and the kids' program is well-structured and engaging. However, as a parent, the overall experience leaves a lot to be desired. The biggest issue? No WiFi for parents. If you're going to have parents sitting around for an hour or more during classes, it's pretty unreasonable not to provide even basic internet access. Not everyone can just disconnect from work or responsibilities during that time. The waiting area is minimal, and without WiFi, you're essentially stuck doing nothing or burning through your mobile data. In this day and age, that feels like a pretty basic amenity that should be standard--especially for a place that otherwise operates at a high level. So yes, great training--but not a very parent-friendly environment. Until they address this, it's hard to fully recommend.
