Their Jiu Jitsu program is not one you'll typically find at other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu only schools. It's taught by 3 people Erico - a Brazilian Black Belt, Brad - a traditional Small Circle Jiu Jitsu stylist, and his daughter Chelsea - a Brazilian purple belt. I sat in on an adult class and both Erico and Brad both wound up teaching half the class. It's unique in that half the class is dedicated to traditional standup Jiu Jitsu and then the later half is on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). It's an extremely non competitive environment and great for adults who are just starting out and have never had any martial arts training. Suffice to say the students here won't be winning any tournaments but nor would they want to. Typically students here don't roll/spar on a regular basis as Brazilian jiu-jitsu only studios do. They are REALLY good with small kids and IMHO this is where they shine. Classes are small and personalized and they teach with discipline while having fun. I've done two Tatami 6 week FIT Camps so far with Karen and Chelsea. I went into the camp a little nervous, maybe a bit skeptical, but also determined to get back into shape. If you told me a year ago that I would be waking up every weekday morning early enough to be at class by 5am, I would have thought you were crazy- but here I am, 20 lbs lighter with tons more energy and stamina, less pain, a consciousness about my diet that I've never had. Chelsea and Karen know how to work with your ability, body type and know how and when to push you. On top of everything, they are both super supportive, always. The difference between Tatami and your standard gym is when you go to Tatami, you're joining a community of not only supportive coaches, but enthusiastic, supportive students as well. Ultimately of course, it's up to you and how much you put into it, but having trainers that care if you're there or not makes a huge difference. This is a great place if you want to introduce your kid to martial arts. The instructors are very friendly and knowledgeable. I was hesitant about putting my 4-year-old in the program, but it's a professional environment without that competitive vibe, and my kid loves it! It's what he looks forward to all week, and so do I. He becomes focused when class starts, and I could feel his self-esteem building up over time. The classes are slowly becoming more popular over time, so I definitely encourage other parents to give it a chance before spaces run out. I would absolutely recommend the 6 week Fit Camp. Coaches Chelesa and Karen are super cool and really motivate you during the workouts. I found this place after a friend recommended I seek out Mr. Burgo for Judo instruction due to his connection with GM Wally Jay. I'm only a beginner in Judo and BJJ, but I have some experience at two other Bay Area Judo schools and some informal BJJ style ground work for self-defense. Brad Burgo's Judo knowledge is very advanced! This isn't surprising when one considers his credentials, but reading words is very different that feeling the energy. I was actually convinced of his skill after only a few minutes of seeing his footwork. In the martial arts, movement doesn't lie! Chelsea and Erico are excellent BJJ instructors and the students in the classes are all kind. I haven't experienced any recklessness here. I have only been attending classes for about 1 month, but I plan to continue due to the quality of the instructors. I travel about 45-60 minutes from Downtown SF to get there and I still think its worth it. read more
