On the first week of December 2021, I enrolled little Paul into the sport. It was a leap of faith by enrolling a high functioning autistic 11-year-old and a bit of a social experiment. It wasn't just an experiment for little Paul but for everyone involved (instructors and teammates alike). Fast forward a year later, Paul has exhibited a physical transformation and a more positive attitude towards physical fitness. His autism seems to work in favor for his training because he is routine-oriented and hates to miss out on a scheduled event/task. And because of that, he has been going 3 times a week, only missing a handful of days. I would like to thank Rio Combat for accepting the goofy odd kid in the group and continuing so. This is my home gym and it's been an awesome community to be a part of. The instruction really is set up to hit all ages and skill levels. Austin and Zach are great with the little ones. Wence teaches the fundamentals class and he's made for it - super patient, super knowledgeable, and just lives to teach. Rio Combat is a great place to train in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's resides in the Bladium sports center and members can use the full accommodations of Bladium. Also note that there is plenty of parking spaces as the Bladium has a large parking lot, so driving to the school is convenient. The school is owned by Diogo Gomes, and is affiliated with Carlson Gracie. Diogo is very knowledgeable in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and always there to teach. He also has several black belts and good amount of high colored belts that help out with the lower belts. I've been training at Rio Combat for three years now. Before joining, I had never done any form of grappling or martial arts. I was intimidated to start, but Diogo and the entire Rio Combat crew was incredibly welcoming in a safe learning environment. I was already a Bladium member, and I love being able to use the weight lifting facilities, sauna and steam, and yoga classes to complement my BJJ training. This is a long overdue review of my experience at Rio Combat. To sum things up I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to learn martial arts, and in particular grappling/bjj. I have trained at 3-4 different schools and have experienced the gamut of what a BJJ academy can be. The absentee instructor, the gym thats too big for its own good, cliqueish training partners, weird smelly people, etc etc. First and foremost in my mind is that the mats are CLEAN. This is super important as it is a matter of safety. For those that don't know, in grappling arts the mats get sweaty and gross after people are training on them for hours, and this funk, left unchecked can breed ringworm, or staph, or other infections. Diogo and the other training partners make it a priority to ensure the mats are cleaned all the time, and I value this a lot. It goes beyond ensuring everyones health and makes a statement about caring for each others welfare in the gym. Secondly are the training partners. There is a wide array of experience and age here from white to black belt. All ages, men and women, children etc all train together. It is nice to have this variety. At some other academies you might only train with other white belts to begin with. I find I learn more when training with both a variety of people in terms of experience level, and in terms of shape and size. Working moves on all different people, seeing what does and doesnt work, is all part of the experience. I appreciate my training partners a lot also because there is a very genuine vibe in the gym and a good camaraderie amongst everyone. Everyone is super supportive and helpful that I have trained with. Third is Diogo (the instructor). Diogo himself teaches 99% of classes at the gym. Oftentimes instructors will delegate a lower belt to teach certain classes or do all the kids classes etc. Diogo instructs AND trains with everyone. This seems like common sense, but oftentimes instructors don't like to train with lower belts or with kids. They may show up to class and teach a move and that is the extent of their involvement. Diogo trains very frequently and is always around to answer a question about a position or move. He is a wealth of knowledge and you can tell he has a genuinely profound love for jiu jitsu. He sets the tone for the gym and this is super important. Finally, bladium (the gym that houses Rio Combat). When you enroll in Rio Combat, part of your membership also translates to gym usage. Bladium is an INSANE gym equipped with everything imaginable. Despite this, the cost for training is among the lowest I have paid at the 4 places I trained at previously. I find this to be a huge perk, as the gym is convenient and offers other classes such as yoga as well (included). TLDR; great gym, diogo is great, training partners are great, good atmosphere, VERY reasonable for BJJ (with added benefits of gym membership). read more

This is a superb place to learn Jiu-Jitsu- whether you are a serious fighter or just want to learn the art. I was reluctant to try it at first because of my age (I'm 56)... but I was welcomed with open arms. After five months I feel like I am progressing well. Diogo Gomes is a terrific instructor and everyone is very helpful with each other's training. This is a really good and cooperative place to train. The facilities at Bladium are very nice - there is even childcare available. Speaking of kids, both my son (12) and daughter (9) have trained with Diogo and LOVE him. I have trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at both teams in Alameda as well as when visiting Hawaii, Tennessee, and Vegas. Here at home in the Bay Area I choose to train at Rio Combat Team. Diogo is a highly skilled black belt with a very solid jiu jitsu game. Our team is respectful and you do not have to worry about getting yelled at because a higher belt or even your sensei is having an off day. Only friendly high quality training here. On top of those key points, you have the only Crossfit program in Alameda, full facilities including showers, steam room, and sauna. Have a drink at the bar and watch the game after training. Go rock climbing or play soccer in an indoor field. My wife is addicited to the work out classes up stairs. If you have kids we have day care. Love it. I knew Diogo from a few times our paths crossed training at Catch mma and when he refereed a local bjj tournament at catch mma and he seemed like a really cool dude and very knowledgeable. I decided to bring my kids the other day because I want them to cross train in Brazilain jiu jitsu and judo. Current 510 judo. Awesome spot too. The first practice was great. The kids played a game in the beginning to let off some steam and to get loose. My boys loved the game. Instruction was great. There were two other instructors assisting Diogo and where able to give more personal attention to the students to ensure they are learning the correct ways. He also teaches about being a good athlete and sportsmanship. Come train as an adult or have your kids come. You won't regret it. Another positive is the dojo is in the Baldium sports complex.
