    Horses on Wild Horse Island

Had a blast on a private pontoon tour with Chris while on our family vacation to Glacier National Park! Spent the morning and afternoon taking a trip over to Wild Horse Island across Flathead Lake. The ride out was about an hour each way, where we enjoyed views of the mountains, water, and the lake houses along the side. Once on the island we went for a small 2.5 mile hike where we were able to see wild horses and a pack of big horn sheep. Chris offered to stop at the painted rocks on the way back and have anyone cliff jump that wanted to, but nobody in our group was interested. We were told to be there at 9:45 to start our tour, and they were there waiting for us on the dock with everything ready to go. The boat we were on was only a year old and more than comfortably accommodated the 11 of us. We got back just a little after 2pm. Chris was very friendly and also was great at queueing up a fun summer boating playlist for us to jam out to during our ride. The launch location is right next to a public boat launch, where we had no problem getting a parking spot. We were able to navigate directly to the launch without any issue by putting Paddle Board Outfitters into Google Maps. They rent paddle boards for $10 an hour which is an awesome price! But we unfortunately didn't have time for those this trip. Definitely recommended checking this place out if in the area.

We had a great experience here renting two kayaks for a few hours to explore the lake. The lake is HUGE and we loved the freedom to basically feel like we were exploring the ocean! The reservation process was easy as was the pick-up process. We loved it so much that we decided on a whim to come back a few days later. We called around 4:00 on the road and asked if rentals for kayaks or jet skis were still available for the day, and were told that was no problem and plenty of equipment was available. We arrived at 4:55 pm but were told that the minimum rental time was 2 hours, but that we needed to have arrived 15 minutes prior to our 2 hour slot in order to sign waivers, etc. and that since they closed at 7 pm, they could not let us rent although the equipment was available. We let the staff know we were willing to pay for the two hours even if we didn't get into the water until past 5 pm, but unfortunately were still not allowed to rent. I can understand their policies, and that we did come in as a walk-up, but they seem unnecessarily strict especially as when we called ahead we were not informed of this, so unfortunately this discolored our experience here. So, just FYI to arrive early and reserve if possible.

The cute and easy set up Chris has built to make it super convenient to access and get on board all the equipment

Their staff is so very kind and knowledgeable! We had a great time renting the paddleboards and we went back for the super speedy jet skis! That was such a great way to explore the lake! We will absolutely use this company every time we visit the lake!

Easy online reservation & prompt service at the launching point. Cutest little gal named Ramey helped us get started with our morning kayaking. Absolutely effortless start to finish & beautiful scenery!

We walked up, asked to rent, and had our kayaks in the water in less than 5 min. We've visted 3 times in 4 days to rent kayaks and SUP boards, and the experience has been perfect each time. Staff is friendly and likable. You can rent in advance online, but we haven't felt the need to bother. The kayaks and SUP boards are in good condition. The rental area is laid back, but safe. The price is extremely reasonable. I can't think of a single thing to complain about, except that I don't live in the area to be able to rent from them more often. Highly recommend.

Really disappointed with how we were treated here, especially after planning around this for weeks…read more This was our first time trying Basecamp Bigfork. We've rented kayaks from other places around the lake for years without issue, even in unpredictable weather, but this year we thought we'd try something new (don't). We had a reservation for the 4th and came fully prepared: rented a U-Haul to transport and store the kayaks, brought our own gear, safety lights, and had a secure location to store the boats overnight. We communicated clearly leading up to the reservation, repeatedly assuring them that we wouldn't go out unless the weather conditions improved. We were asking for the option to maybe go out if it cleared up. Instead, they cancelled the reservation last minute with no room for discussion. They kept bringing up that it was "getting too late," even though we were still within our scheduled time and in regular contact. It felt like they didn't trust us to make our own judgment call, and that was especially frustrating given how much planning we had done and how careful we were being. It completely derailed our holiday plans, and they showed no real effort to accommodate or even acknowledge that. No flexibility, just a blanket cancellation with a shrug. We've dealt with unpredictable Montana weather before and had a plan, but never with a company this rigid or dismissive.

Book Early - It's Amazing if you love nature and DOGS!…read more So, 3 years ago I called in early November to get a reservation for a half day dogsledding trip over Christmas week, and was told they were all booked up. So, when we decided over the summer to go to Whitefish for the holidays, I called and made a reservation (this was in August!). Seriously, it was at least 4 months in advance and I pretty much stalked them until I got confirmation that I had secured a reservation. Upon arriving in the Flathead Valley, I noticed how little snow there was and started to worry that the dogsledding would be canceled, but luckily, Mark texted that it was still on and he had a location that still had snow and we'd be fine. Thank goodness! Upon arrival, we were given a tour of the kennel, met the 6 dogs that were going to be our team, and loaded them up in the trailer. We got a bit of a lesson on how to manage the sled and then drove about 40 minutes south to an area that had a good amount of snow and got the dogs all harnessed up and off we went! There were two of us, so one of us was standing and driving the sled, and one of us was sitting as a passenger. We were able to switch out throughout the trip, so we both got to be the driver for a portion of the trip. When you are the passenger, you can take pictures and video, which is nice, but standing and driving the sled is the BEST part. We sledded down a road for quite a while, letting the dogs take breaks as needed. Mark, the owner of the company, managed the team by cross country skiing along side us the entire way to make sure the dogs behaved, gave us instruction and lead the way. It's quite amazing how much physical effort he puts in for you to have a great time - he basically exercises for two hour straight. The second half of the tour included heading into the back country, sledding through trees on a narrow trail. OMG - this was amazing! We stopped along the river and had hot chocolate, which was such a nice way to enjoy the scenery and let the dogs rest, take pictures and pet and kiss the dogs. If you are still debating if you should do this, I would say don't hesitate - DO IT. Especially if you are in good physical condition, enjoy outdoor activities and love dogs. It is such a unique and amazing day. Also, Mark is a fantastic guide, he makes it fun, light and he is so incredibly nice. The dogs are super sweet (although, they do get a bit rowdy and occasionally get into little tiffs with each other) and the scenery is outstanding. I seriously had a smile on my face the entire time, laughing continuously as we went through the trees. We had a blast and I'm so grateful we got to experience this day, it was the highlight of our trip. Last note, I wasn't sure what to wear. I would dress like you are going skiing. Since sometimes you are sitting, you get a bit more chilly, so dress in layers. I had on Sorel winter snow boots, ski pants, thermal underwear top and bottom, a fleece and a puffer jacket, along with warm ski socks, a warm hat and my ski gloves. If it is a really cold day, I'd get those hand warmers and foot warmer things that you can put in your boots and gloves.

Views views views!…read more Great change of pace after days of hiking. I rented a 1 seater kayak from glacier outfitters. It may look like a far walk but it isn't! Totally doable. The staff was very nice to explain everything to me. They showed me the lake map and where to go and not go, etc. Instructions were very clear. I rented 2 hours (they have you 15 mins for the round trip walk). The walk from the rental to the lake I thought was a bit of a walk but it was not bad to haul the kayak there, they are on wheels so it is not bad. You leave the wheels near the trees. Returning the kayak was fairly easy as well. There are lockers available that you can put your stuff if you don't want to take it with you. The minimum number of hours is 2 hours and it was 40 something. Overall it was a good experience! Everything was great. Would recommend and use service again.

We made reservations at Glacier Outfitters for kayaks for the day. (highly recommend reservations)…read more There is a small parking lot and some street parking but it was not a busy day and it was full. We had people waiting for our parking spot when we returned to the car. I'm not sure where people would park when it gets very busy. Perhaps there is another parking lot I didn't see. When you walk up to G.O. you sign waivers, pay the fee and are gathered in an area for instructions. The man who provided the instructions was very informative. Advised us of areas in Flathead Lake to avoid including a rough water area and a few bald eagle's nests as they recently laid eggs. After instructions, you are provided with the kayak, paddle, life jacket and a cart to roll the kayak down to the lake. Now, I'm pretty strong but the kayaks are heavy. I did think to myself, how would someone with less strength get this kayak down to the lake? Something to ask about if you are renting as it is several yards to walk with a heavy kayak. The carts were easy to remove and stash while we spent the day in the lake. When you finish kayaking, you simply load the kayak back on the cart and roll it back to G.O., drop off gear and you are done. We had a great experience with Glacier Outfitters and would use them again.
