February 12, 2023 - Yay I finally made it to Pahrump, yes I do enjoy Road Trips. It was a nice drive from Vegas, and we visited some Friends, went to Church, had lunch, stopped at a few other places. It was such a beautiful day! How do you end up at a Museum? Easily, when your in search of things to do that don't cost you money, and it's something you don't normally do, that's how you end up there. I am so glad I did stop and learned a thing or two. It's a Sunday and it looks like just a building. It's away from the main street but not that far in. All that matters is that we found it. I love Cactus, so that was the first thing that caught my eye. Some Statue Artwork of Kids at the park outside, that was pretty cool to see. We walked in and there is a replica of inside of a cabin, of course you just think that's the decor. Than you walk into the other door and bam so many interesting things to see and you just kind of stand there and take it all in. The Guide working that day just reminded me of home, like he was one of my Uncles, bursting with knowledge. He answered all my questions, walked with me and told me that all the items were Donated. Now that makes me more interested. I mean you can not find these things anywhere. While my family was on their own little tour, I was just enjoying everything I saw. Before I forget, that entrance, all that wood is from a home that is over 100 years old, they preserved what they could. So Beautiful and in Great Condition. I wasn't interested in several things. Historical stuff is what gets my attention. See my pictures, because I would be writing a book about everything. Growing up I did a lot of Ironing for my dad, so you know I had to take a picture of Irons throughout the years. Long story short so many fascinating things. I hope this is enough to make you stop on in and enjoy the History of Pahrump, Nevada. The Bigger Joy for me was seeing how interested my 26 & 19 year old were. I am so proud that they enjoyed their visit. I thought it would be boring for them, well they proved me wrong. They dragged their Aunty with them, lol they all ran away from me. For a great experience, head on out to Pahrump, stop on in for some great historical memorabilia, even if you have no company, go anyway, learn a thing or two and I guarantee you an amazing visit. Thank you Uncle for sharing your knowledge with me, I forgot to write your name down, but your face is in my memory!

My BF and decide to drive up to PAhrump and see what's there, we were pleasantly surprised that we found this awesome museum so full of history. They had the wild west extravaganza on the premises and we were able to see the play and the old buildings which were so cool. The museum is free and theres is so much to see, the art exhibition portion with all the nuclear testing sites information was very informational. I absolutely loved all the history and learning about this town. They have a train recreation going through the original towns before it was so populated, it's a must see. They had lots of food around like corn, indian fry bread, hotdogs and snacks. It was a great wild west type of fair. There isn't too much to do in the town but this was well worth it, the people were so friendly and the food vendors were great, I really enjoyed it.

Pahrump, Nevada. Pahrump... What does anyone know about this town? I didn't know anything until the world's famous pimp wrote a book called the "Art of the Pimp." He is famous for some HBO show about his whorehouses that I don't care to much for. Pahrump Valley Museum had nothing to say about this dead pimp & showed what the town was all about. This was a ranching town where they grew... Cotton... Yep, Cotton~! The exhibits ranged from locals, an exterior environment motif, structures from the wild west era, and huuuge section on Area 6 where the proposed nuclear waste dump would be. And some exhibits regarding the Manhattan Project. Access/Roads: A Streets are paved. Parking: A Big lot in a dirt lot. Distance: B Las Vegas, NV is 65 miles south @ 1 hour. Death Valley Junction is 30 miles west @ 30 minutes. Baker, CA is 85 miles southwest @ 1.5 hours. Costs: A Free. Local Museums like this can use all the donations possible. Don't be stingy. Nearby Attractions: -Death Valley NP including the Amargosa Opera House. -Whorehouses or whatever the "cathouse" hooker lounge is called. -Casinos. -Amargosa Valley & Area 51 Alien Center. -And a lot of dirt. Conclusion: A Fascinating local museum with friendly staff.

37/2016 Museums can be so interesting! It is crazy we never knew this was in Pahrump! We have been by the sign a ton of times never knew where it was located even going by it on the road just one of those things you don't pay attention to! Finally decided to check it out after seeing the sign again. We did not visit the indoors part of the museum as we spent more time outside checking out the buildings. We were really impressed at how well everything has been preserved. We love seeing the old stuff that they had displayed. Really interesting to read the paper of each place which you can pick up inside before walking around. The history of Pahrump is quite amazing, and to see the places that are being restored are really interesting!! The General store was really cute and it made you feel you were really back in that time period as well as the little red school house, walking in you feel like your back in elementary school again! As well as the other buildings that were restored. There is a couple not restored yet that are quite old looking. Not sure if they will restore it eventually or leave it the way they are. This is not a huge museum like some I have been to but it is worth stopping by and checking it out, there is a lot of things to see if you like seeing history as well as old antique items. Why not if your in Pahrump to stop by and take a look!

I driven by the "Museum" sign along SR 160 while driving through Pahrump on my way to Death Valley but never turned to see what it was. Today, 3 friends and I drove here for a talk by Tom Sutak, the author of a book entitled "Into the Jaws of Hell Jefferson Hunt: The Death Valley '49ers Wagon Train & His Adventures in California 1846-1857". Who knew that the Pahrump Valley had such a fine museum inside and out. Indoors, there are two rooms of exhibits and a large area set up for talks such as today's. Outside, there are historical buildings that are from Pahrump or the Pahrump Valley area. An old schoolhouse, the largest railroad tie house in the world, a replica of a mine tunnel, some wonderful desert landscaping with sculptures. In short, the Pahrump Valley Museum was much more than I expected. They have talks like this one Saturday each month and I'll be back in the future for more of them. It's a nice drive, there's a park near the museum where we had the lunches we brought, and we had a late afternoon drive back to Las Vegas. I am a fan!!

Had a great visit today. First time coming here drove up from Vegas and thought it was a good little museum. Lots of local finds and stories of local history. The museum director was knowledgeable and so kind and welcoming

Visited the Pahrump Museum and really enjoyed it. I was surprised at how big it was and the gal working there was very friendly and informative. There was lots to see inside and outside as well. There is no fee to get in they do have a donation box by the visitor log that you sign into. Well worth a donation and there is no pressure to donate. I would even go back again as there is so much to see.

The Amargosa Rover Canyon offers several trails in China Ranch and beyond. There are two ways to hike the canyon itself. The best way to enjoy most of the entire canyon is to spot cars. Leave one at China Ranch and drive the other to Tecopa, California and park where there's public parking behind the post office. From here, hike south following the trail. Mostly you'll hike on the railroad bed of the T&T Railroad (Tonopah and Tidewater) bed as it follows the Amargosa River through the canyon. At places, the trail leaves thew railroad bed and makes wide arcs on the east side of the trail. After 5 miles, you'll reach the turnoff for China Ranch and where the spur from the T&T was built to bring gypsum from the mines above the ranch from the Morrison Siding. Along the way through the canyon from Tecopa, you'll see areas with barbed wire. This is where horses and cattle were fenced in to keep them off the railroad tracks. You will see no track. The railroad stopped operating in 1940 and the rails were pulled up and used for World War II needs. About a mile and a half from the Ranch, there's a turnoff to the west (right) and this leads to a little waterfall on the river. Beyond this about 1/4 mile, there's another turnoff--again to the west--that leads to a slot canyon that is blocked by a huge chockstone. Both side trails have signs but they have faded a lot over the years. When you almost reach the 90º bend in the river, the trail goes up a hill and heads east (left) toward the ranch. Before going up the hill, take time to look at the wood left from when this was where the gypsum was loaded onto ore cars over 100 years ago. Follow the trail from here to China Ranch. On this last bit, you'll come to a building. My first photo of this building is from 2005. The building was called the Tuff Building and the sign that was there said it was first a bar and then an assay house. The building was supposed to have been repaired that years. 1w2 years later, another portion has fallen over including the concrete piece from the doorway with the 1903 construction date in the concrete. I'm sure when I hike here next year, the rest of the southerly wall will be down too! What a shame! There are several hikes. After this 6.5 mile hike, you'll want to have a date shake and perhaps some date cookies. You earned them. On another day(s), you can explore the other trails in China Ranch. After your shake, take the car you left at the ranch and ride back to Tecopa to get the one where you started your hike. This is the way to see almost the entire canyon.

The exhibits around the center are likewise very informative and interactive - the kids loved them! The shop is small but stocked well. The path is a boardwalk, and we saw a lot of birds, jackrabbits, and lizards. We also heard a snake at one point. Towards the farthest area of the walk, the water feeding the spring becomes visible, and there are some small fish! The spring itself is beautiful. The tour is only available to U.S. Citizens (I think), and gets booked up far in advance...so reserve a spot early (like, 6 months early! Not kidding -- you really have to plan in advance). This tour will take an entire day -- departing the Atomic History Museum just off the Strip at 7:30am, and returning around 4:30pm -- so you should bring a lunch and/or snacks. There is also the option to buy food at the commissary at the Test Site, which offers reasonably priced but greasy fare like burgers, etc. Most of the time is spent driving -- the NNSS is about 70 miles out of town, in the middle of the desert. I recommend sitting on the right-hand side of the bus, as you will have the best view of Creech Air Force Base on the way up, as well as the approach to the Test Site. This is a SLOWWW moving tour -- most people who take it are older, and it takes about 15 minutes for everyone to get off the bus at each site, and then another 15 for everyone to get back on. Additionally, we made no less than three stops at two different cafeterias, for everyone to use the restroom and get coffee/food....so I'd say fully half the tour is just getting on/off the bus to eat, drink and pee. The other half is spent driving around to various areas at the Test Site, some of which they let you get out and look around at. They let you out at a bomb crater, a tower that used to house an underground bomb, and an area where they detonated an above-ground bomb. They drive you through many other areas, including the fake houses they built to see the effects of a nuke blast on suburban homes, and the area where they store hazardous waste. This was the most interesting part of the tour for me -- it was astonishing to see how they stack up shipping containers full of hazardous waste, then bury them in an unlined pit covered in 8 feet of dirt. Overall, prepare to spend a lot of time sitting on the bus. They do show semi-informative videos on the way up, and the tour guide talks about the history of the place and points out interesting sights along the way....but it's still a long, slow day. So be prepared. No cameras or cell phones are allowed, but they do take a group photo at one of the craters, and everyone gets a free copy back at the museum. For a FREE tour this is an exceptional value, and although it's frustrating at times to keep to the slow, kindergarten-field-trip pace...it's your only option to get on this base, so it's totally worth it. Everything is FREE, but many guests did tip the bus driver and the tour guide at the end.
