This lodge was a dream. I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else on the island…read more The location in Paia was perfect - tucked right beside a coffee shop and behind a strip of cute boutiques and shops. It's a short 15-minute drive from the airport and conveniently located in walking distance of the beaches and not far off Road to Hana. It was my first time traveling to Maui and a friend who has lived there for 5 years recommended Paia. It was very safe and secure. We adventured during most of the day, but we drove through later one afternoon and the area was hopping! Nalu Kai Lodge - it's not your typical place to stay. I went there with my boyfriend. It was quaint, romantic, safe, comfortable, and unbelievably clean. To put things into perspective on a cleanliness standpoint, I travel every other week for work and my routine is to check for bugs, Clorox wipe any surface I touch, and wear shower shoes (I am a germaphob and have stayed in 5-star hotels to your typical Marriott or Marriott Courtyard - you'd be shocked at just how disgusting hotels are no matter their rank). This is the first place I stayed where I haven't worn shower shoes in years. It was just that clean. The sheets were fresh and the bed was cozy. The temperature was ideal - we went during rainy season in January and the fan with the windows open made for the perfect temperature. It was almost magical the way the rain sounded on the roof. It was better than my sleep and meditation app - and it was au natural! The stone floor of the shower room felt amazing under my feet and the room came with fresh beach towels and a refrigerator. I read reviews about parking - they have enough spots for guests, there is plentiful street parking at night, and there is free beach parking a block away. Be aware - the bathroom is separated from the room by a curtain. If you are a private person and need added privacy to use the bathroom, I recommend sending your significant other/travel buddy outside to enjoy the lounge area, to the coffee shop adjoined to the lodge, or to go look at the shops. They also have an outdoor shower by the fountain outside, a hammock, picnic tables, a tiki bar, and many outlets for charging. If you run into the staff, they are extraordinary. I particularly enjoyed Suzy (Susan?)'s company. We talked one afternoon and she was a lovely person. My only regret about my stay is that I only stayed two nights. I spent the other nights in different parts of the island in Airbnb's, inns, etc. My boyfriend and I tried to book additional nights at Nalu Kai even though we had reservations elsewhere, but they were booked. We loved it that much. It was just that special. Spark Notes Recap - Cleanliness: 10/10 Location: 10/10 Safety: 10/10 Recs: Paia Coffee Shop (connected to hotel - great coffee, get a DREAM bar, food looked awesome), Kuau Store (drive down the road - great place to grab snacks, smoothies, poke), Hana Picnic Lunch Company (great ice cream), and Flatbread Pizza (get the pork and pineapple! Ask for pineapple vinaigrette).

Fridge was clean, bathroom was super clean and they even had the fans and lights going prior to my check in. I got to check in 5 hours EARLY which was fantastic!! My name was on the dry erase board prior to arrival and my room was super easy to find. The back area is SO CUTE I wish I could have stayed longer!!

The suite was clean and furnished nicely. The suite had been occupied up until the day of our arrival and it did seem that housekeeping had not had enough time to fully stock everything- we had only 1 roll of Toilet paper for 5 people, and no clean sheets for the beds. Also, the BBQ for the Hibiscus Suite is in the carport and so we did not use it, had we had a deck we would have enjoyed that. These are the only reasons we did not give 5 stars. We loved the town of Pa'ia and would stay here again on our next vacation. I loved the sunrise trips out the Hana Hwy for Banana Bread and fruit, and sunset watching the surfers at North Shore.

The short review: My wife and I recently spent 13 days at…read morethe Kaiholo Hale (Dec '12-Jan '13) and really enjoyed our stay. Overall, it is very clean and well kept, in a quiet residential area, about a mile outside of "downtown" Paia. There were a few things that kept this from being 5 stars, but it was still a great place that I'd be happy to recommend to friends and we'd be more than happy to stay there again. The long review: Location - Kaiholo Hale is located in a residential neighborhoood right on the edge of Paia, which is a very cool little town with some good restaurants and shops. About 2 min away in the opposite direction from the heart of town is Ho'okipa Beach Park, where you can watch some amazing surfing and windsurfing. There is a small beach (the one behind Mama's Fish House) a short walk from the house. The path to the beach is a cool little walk, but it's hard to find. The beach itself isn't a good swimming beach, but depending on the tide, you can swim there. Now for the first of the 'downsides' to staying here - the traffic getting through Paia town can be bad in both directions. The longest I sat in traffic waiting to get through Paia was about 20 min. However, it's not always like that; I'd say the average time I spent waiting was about 5 min. The house - The entire house can be rented or each of the 4 individual units can be rented separately. A nice feature is that if you rent the whole house, the units are interconnected, so you can travel between units without having to go outside. If you just rent an individual unit, they are separated from each other, so you don't have to worry about fellow house guests walking into your unit. We stayed in both of the downstairs units (Hibiscus and Gardenia suites) and enjoyed our stay in each of them. However, if we go again, I think I'd prefer to stay in one of the upstairs units (Orchid or Plumeria suites) - the layouts seemed to be a bit better. They were all very clean (I don't remember seeing any bugs inside the units) and comfortable and had plenty of room. For part of our trip, there were 4 adults and 2 kids in the 2 bedroom unit (Hibiscus) and I never felt cramped. All the linens were clean and soft. The kitchens were well stocked with newer appliances. I thought the beds were very comfortable - my wife and I slept very well. The living room and other furniture were comfortable, but not great. TV's worked well and had satellite (either Dish or DirectTV), so lots of channels if needed. All the bedrooms and most (if not all) of the living rooms have A/C and a ceiling fan. But if you open the windows, there's a great cross breeze and you may not even need to use the A/C much... but it's great to have! We only had a few minor problems - one of the buttons on our remote didn't work well, the WiFi was out for a few hours and the bathroom fan didn't work. Outside amenities - There are 2 washers and dryers outside the house available for the guests to use. This was something I looked for when renting a place to reduce the amount of clothes we had to bring. One set was a newer front load, full sized washer and dryer, the other an older set that was not working when we were there. Despite only 1 washer/dryer working, I never had any problems using them when we needed to. There is an outside shower and hose to wash off if needed. 1 parking spot for each unit, 3 are covered. Both upstairs units have nice lanais and I believe each has a BBQ on the lanai. The lanais for the downstairs units are not nearly as nice and the Gardenia doesn't have a BBQ. There was also plenty of beach gear available for use - beach towels, coolers, some chairs, etc. Management - We rented through MauiVacationProperties.com and they were very responsive and helpful. You can also rent directly through the property at NorthShoreMauiVacations.com. The property manager, Anne, was very helpful and quick to respond to questions or requests. We had a great time at Kaiholo Hale. The area was much quieter than Kihei or Lahaina, but still close enough to do whatever we wanted during the day. Paia is a really cool little town and the house itself was clean and well kept. We're looking forward to going back soon.

First, to echo some other reviews, it's really odd that the pictures on the site do not do the property justice. It's better in person and everything Claudia writes about the property is understated. It is hard to describe just how relaxing this house when the windows are open and the trades are flowing through the home. It is possible to hear neighbors and traffic, but you most likely will not. A few notes: the kitchen is well maintained. You will have everything you need to cook (or grill) and make dinner. We made most of our meals while there, and alternated between eating on the lanai or inside in the dining room. Claudia is very proud about her espresso/cappuccino set up and a great way to start your day. The kids spent hours in the pool. There is a chest of pool toys that were well used by all of us, and there are plenty of beach towels. Haiku, of course, is about as far away from the resorts at Kaanapali and Kapalua as one can get and still by on the same island. This location is for people that want to get out and do things, then come 'home' for the evening. It was perfect for us. On activities, Claudia referred us to Hawaiian Paddle Sports for a few of our outings. The owner, Tim, coaches outrigger teams and coached Claudia who is a steersman on a club team. We kayaked, paddled and surfed with Tim's company (Tim for outrigger paddling and Patrick for kayaking and surfing). These were excellent outings and thank you Claudia for pointing us in the right direction. We did go out for pizza in Haiku at Colleen's, which is a nice local spot and Paia is only a few minutes away. We ate at Mama's Fish House on our last day and ate at the Paia Fish Market and several other places for lunch. We did most of our food shopping at Costco, which is also fairly close in Kahului. The beaches at Hookipa and Paia are close and great beaches. To sum up, we couldn't have been happier with Hale Mauka Makai. It was better than expected (and we expected a lot) and Claudia made us welcome. We will be coming back.

The house is clean, airy and well maintained (weekly housekeeper). It comfortably accommodated our family of three, with each person having access to their own en-suite bathroom, a saving grace for us! It has a fully equipped kitchen with appliances which I found especially useful for morning smoothies and cooking my own spicy dishes from time to time. The owner very generously invited us to help ourselves to fruit and veggies from her charming garden which we did! The grounds are beautifully landscaped and sprawling. The pool is one of the best we've experienced at a VRBO-expansive-all of us together in it did not feel crowded; it is also comfortably deep enough at almost 8 feet. We got to experience several days of poolside lounging-what would a beach vacation be without this?! The pool swimming also helped us practice getting our strokes down for swimming in the ocean. The owner always made herself available to address any concerns we might have had, very pleasant and friendly. We also felt we had privacy both within and outside, neighbor homes, although relatively close, are still not able to peer in or overhead, a very desirable feature for us. There is not enough I can say about this beautiful home, if anything, we look forward to going back!

My husband found him after a friend of his (a real estate agent from the mainland) vetted many potential agents for us. Our friend told us he knew Pete was the perfect agent for us because he focused on details, made decisions based on data, and wasn't fixated on making the sale over finding the right property for the client. In a market like Maui, where options are limited and it can feel like compromise is a necessary evil, Pete's willingness to recommend against offers is crucial. Pete never encouraged us to overbid and was always honest about the negative qualities of properties we viewed. If anything, he may at times be too cautious, and is always under promising and over delivering. If you're looking for an honest, smart, and reliable agent, look no further! We have kept in touch and he has continued to provide valuable guidance after we closed on our home.

The process was…read moresmooth and relatively stress-free thanks to the skills of Billy and his brother Pete, two of the nicest and most sincere people we know. The transaction was handled professionally and calmly with attention to detail, and our house sold in a very short period of time in the current market, just over three months. We chose the Maui Real Estate Team because we had bought our house through Billy when we came to Maui in 2005, and we found him to be a good fit for us with his calmness, honesty, helpful attitude, and his knowledge of Maui. At that time, he listened carefully and showed us just the homes (only two) that he thought could work for us after carefully listening to our wants and asking lots of questions. Billy was able to guide us to the house (a two acre property in Huelo) that had exactly what we were looking for, with the quiet, the acreage and the feel that we sought. That transaction had some moments of trepidation when we and the owners could not agree on important details and we were afraid of the deal falling through, but Billy was steady and encouraging and we were able to come to a good agreement that suited both parties. When it came time for us to sell the house it was clear to us whom we wanted to represent us, and again Billy listened to our concerns, gave practical suggestions on pricing and marketing, indicated realistic expectations on how homes were selling in the slow housing market, and offered his understanding and empathy. He listened to our needs and he offered strategies based on these, then did all he could to assure that the house was noticed by buyers. As we said, our house sold in a timely fashion and we were able to move on to where we were going. The few points of contention in the deal were smoothed over by Billy's handling of phone calls and emails (always done promptly and professionally) with the buyer's realtor, the title company, a real estate lawyer, inspectors and more. We unhesitatingly recommend the Maui Real Estate Team when buying or selling a home on Maui. Sincerely, Anudeva (Roger) Stevens and Hanna Hammerli
