We stay at Makani Sands every time we go to Maui. Our first stay was in 104, and we love that unit for sentimental reasons. We've also stayed in 101, which was very nice because it has a half-bath near the living area, and we have also enjoyed staying in 110, which has two bedrooms and 2 baths and mini-splits in the bedrooms and living area, which accommodated our group of 4 nicely. We stayed in 206, which was nice, but we prefer to stay on the first floor. Kitchens are well-appointed; we cook in the condo a lot, so having a fully stocked kitchen is wonderful. We barbecue a lot, so we enjoy using them, but last time, the BBQs on the north side of the resort weren't there, so we used the ones on the other end. Furniture and hide-a-beds are generally comfortable, and the beds are decent. I'd recommend that unit 110 put blankets in the closets for cooler nights, as I got chilled and had to use beach towels as blankets to keep me warm (I lived on Oahu and am a warm-weather girl). The scenery is amazing, especially when the clouds lift off of Molokai. When the beach is there (sand washes away during winter months but starts to return in spring), we enjoy walking straight out to swim and snorkel. If the beach is washed away, we carefully climb down, but I wouldn't recommend that if you have any mobility issues at all or for children. Snorkeling is great along the reef. Whale watching from your lanai is amazing during whale season (November through March, maybe April). However, you may want to stay in a 2nd or 3rd story unit to get an amazing view of the whales' breaching. One unit (210) even supplies a telescope. I love the quiet at Makani Sands. It's a mellow place to stay; we've only encountered one group who partied loudly in all the years we've been staying (thankfully, they were gone quickly), and the majority of people who stay there are mature and go to bed before 10:00pm, and we rarely see small children when we stay. There are a few year-round residents, so being mindful of their home and being quiet and respectful is important. Each unit has a washer and dryer, so I could travel with fewer things and am able to wash clothes as needed. Each unit we've stayed in has a dishwasher and televisions in the living room and master bedroom. Some condos have beach chairs and boogie boards for guests to use, and occasionally, there is snorkel gear, but we take our own. I love it when owners provide a conch shell, which we always sound at sunset. The location is great; ABC is within walking distance, so is Jackass Coffee, several shops, and a small farmer's market are also a short walk. There is a Times grocery store nearby, and it's fairly well-stocked. Snappy Cakes is great for breakfast, and Snorkel Bob's are in the same shopping center. If you want a larger grocery store, Safeway in Lahaina is a short drive at the Cannery Mall, along with Long's, HIC, and there is a brand new Denny's, too. Front Street is close, and so is Whaler's Village. The food trucks in Ka'anapali at Lower Honoapi'ilani and Honoapi'ilani Roads are fantastic! The sea wall out front, where the beach and lounge chairs are, is scheduled to be repaired from August 2022 to October 2022, and they will be closed during that time, which is the time of year we generally visit, but we'll have to look forward to going after repairs are completed. We love you, Makani Sands! Can't wait to see you again soon!

Unit 305 was immaculately clean and very comfortable. The view from the lanai is breathtaking and we watched sea turtles play in the surf every single day. The ocean directly in front was great for snorkeling (when the waves were calm) and the pool in back was nice and warm (and even has pool toys!). The kitchen is well equipped and had everything we needed. There's no AC, but keeping the sliding doors and windows open allowed the breeze to keep the unit comfortable. The unit had several beach chairs (a few of which could use replacing), but they served our purpose. My only recommendation would be to add a plastic cooler for picnicking! The location is stellar as there are several food options nearby. There's a farmers market on M/W/F from 7-11AM that has excellent breakfast options. The nearby park is great for families as the water is calm and there are picnic tables and a playground.

Highly recommend! Stayed 9/19/15-9/26/15 Get location! To Black Rock and Lahaina Condo has everything you need inside! Right on water! Ocean view!! BBQ to use and toys for kids! Has a pool but we didn't use cause we would just to the ocean! As soon as we got there walk the couple of feet to sand and there was a sea turtle on the sand chillaxing!!! It started our vacation on a high note! We stayed in 109, bottom floor! Love it cause every morning we would walk straight out to sand to check if the sea turtle was there. Next door where the rocks and the sea turtles would be there every day eating for hours! We would watch the sunrise and sunset every morning! Eat breakfast on the patio! Great place! Would totally go back and stay at these condos!

My review is mainly for Condo #205 which is the condo I stayed in from 8/12-8/18. First of all I want to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the condo after viewing pictures on the website. The pictures on the website do not do this place justice. It's so much prettier in person! First timer in Maui and I must say that #205 was perfect! It was nicely furnished, had everything you could possibly need, and was immaculate! Some of my family stayed in other condos on the property and I must say that #205 was the nicest one bedroom of all. An added bonus was the turtles that frequently come by and sometimes chill out on the sand right on the property. I loved my stay at Makani Sands, neighbors were really friendly, and I will definitely stay again in the future! Mahalo!

The accommodations were superb. Love the golf cart transportation. The property is airy, modern and causal. I loved the communication via text of how to prepare for the upcoming storm. The one detail for improvement is parking they have luau at nighttime. If you're coming back any time in the later evening parking will be farther from the property. The power went out due to the storm and communication pretty much stopped after that. Though the reception and main tower still had power. All in all, a Beautiful stay. The pros far outweighs the cons. Def would stay again if I was staying in Lahaina.

Disappointing Experience for a First Mother-Daughter Vacation…read more My daughter and I recently stayed at the Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows for our very first mother-daughter trip. This vacation was intended to be a special time for us to bond and enjoy a relaxing getaway together, but the condition of our accommodations nearly ruined the entire experience. When we checked into our first room, we were immediately met with an overwhelming smell of urine. It was so strong that we had to request a room change. However, once we got settled into the second room, a powerful odor of Raid chemical spray enveloped the space. The fumes were so severe that keeping the window closed gave my daughter headaches. As a result, we were forced to sleep with the balcony door open all night, exposing us directly to the outside elements--allowing moths, mosquitoes, and even birds to come straight into our room while we slept. To make matters worse, when we first arrived in the second room, the counters were covered in coffee stains. Thankfully, I always carry my own Clorox wipes to sanitize surfaces and clean the toilets myself, but guests should never have to do that at a resort. The housekeeping issues continued later in our stay: when maid service came to clean the room, they actually made the bed with my daughter's shirt accidentally tucked right inside the sheets. We also attended the resort's luau, which was underwhelming for the cost. To add to the disappointment, my daughter suffered from diarrhea after eating there, which only added to our discomfort during the trip. In fairness to the resort, the staff members themselves were pleasant, and Royal Scoops had very good coffee. Management also issued an $83 credit for the inconvenience. However, an $83 gesture does not nearly compensate for the severe discomfort, lack of cleanliness, and disruption to our rest caused by these conditions. Sadly, due to this experience, I will not be returning, and I cannot in good conscience recommend the Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows to others.

There's the popular outdoor mall, Whaler's Village about a 5 minute walk away with restaurants and shops, just follow the beach path. LUGGAGE STORAGE (1/5): We arrived a bit early and the staff held onto our luggage while we went out to get food. I didn't see where it was taken. I did not realize that they would store our luggage outside in the humidity!!! I thought they would store it inside the hotel in a closet in the back. I had temperature-sensitive medication in my luggage and when we came back to check-in, I was shocked to find our luggage stored outside. Had I known that, I would have asked them to store my meds in the fridge for me. Thankfully, my meds were okay in the end, but it did give me panic. PARKING (5/5): Since we booked through Costco, the parking was included with our stay. We had in/out privileges and no valet required. STAFF (5/5): I forgot her name, but she welcomed us very friendly and checked us in. Michelle I think was her name. We asked about local places to eat and she kindly wrote us a list. The housekeeping staff was also very nice and always greeted us in the halls. SHUTTLE/TROLLEY (5/5): There's a free green trolley that will take you to Whaler's Village and came around every 30min or so (check the schedule) and will also drop you off at nearby hotels along the beach, not just the Outrigger. Also, the hotel has it's own private shuttle that will follow the same route within the resort grounds if you don't want to wait for the trolley. Again, they don't exit the resort. One night we went to a nearby hotel (The Bungalos) for a music event but had just missed the trolley and the guys out front said they could drive us in the hotel van. And then gave us a number to call them when we were ready to go back to the hotel, so we called them but wanted to go to dinner at Whaler's Village after and they took us. So so convenient. really nice guy! It's complimentary but we tipped our driver and he was always so kind! We read in the handouts that they did a special going-away ceremony at the end of your stay but unfortunately we had to miss it to catch our early flight, so Michelle was kind enough to give us the necklace and do a mini version for us there at the check-out counter. POOL (1/5): We didn't even try the pool. It's quite small in size, and it was so hot, and no shade anywhere, so we didn't bother. They did provide towels though that you could swap out and stuff, so we used those and just went to the beach. RENTALS: There's a hut on-site where you get the towels, but also offers rental stuff for the water, beach chairs, etc. Note: the beach chairs + umbrella rentals are quite steep, I think was like 2 chairs + 1 umbrella almost $85 and had to return by 5pm. We ended up going to Costco and instead and bought 2 tommy bahama chairs and umbrella and used them the whole week while we were there, and even used our chairs at other places too. We saved some money that way and used that money instead to tip the staff and buy food in Maui b/c it ain't cheap! ACTIVITY SCHEDULE: We were given a print-out at check-in with activities throughout the week, however we showed up to one of them and there was nothing going on but there was a gentleman there. We were told that the print-out was outdated so we had missed the activity since it was earlier in the week. So don't go off the print-out. He had a different schedule available at his table. So..there's that. Overall, I would not mind staying here again but would be interested in staying at the other hotels along the Kanapali beach.

Communication throughout the process was poor, and we never felt that anyone took real ownership of the issue. The only compensation offered was a $50 resort credit, which did not reflect the inconvenience or the time we spent trying to resolve a problem that should never have existed. Beyond our room, both the villas and many of the common areas felt worn, dingy, and lacking the level of care we have come to expect from the Westin brand. The most disappointing aspect of our stay wasn't simply the condition of the property--it was the apparent lack of urgency and concern from management. We have always associated Westin with quality, service, and attention to detail. Unfortunately, this experience fell well below those expectations. We also loved the pool. Lots of pool seats available unlike other hotels. I guess it helps that it's at the end of the strip so you don't really have as much crowds coming through. We grabbed some snorkel gear to explore Black Rock and it was full of marine life. What a beautiful spot (I grew up on an island myself and will tell you it's a legit snorkeling experience).
